Should the Government Bring Back Trust-Busting? - Room for Debate - NYTimes.com
A de-concentration of economic power would lift up the middle class. Antitrust law was formerly used to reduce inequality, fight corruption and create a politically stable social contract all at once. [...] “Monopoly constitutes the death of capitalism and the genesis of authoritarian government.”

Labour to oppose 'Henry VIII powers' being used to rewrite EU laws | Politics | The Guardian
[ no moderation, moderation is gone. Global Britain is here. 'indyref2 wil happen one way or another. no opposition and no say will infuriate Scots even more eventually ] It is expected that this will involve extensive use of “Henry VIII powers” – laws allowing ministers to change primary legislation (government bills) using secondary legislation (orders that go through parliament with little or no scrutiny). [...] Corbyn said Labour would oppose handing ministers such extensive powers when the House of Commons votes on the great repeal bill. The Great Unraveling Looms - Blame The 'Austrians'? | Zero Hedge
Well, well: who would have believed it. First the Bank for International Settlements comes out with a paper that links credit booms to the boom-bust business cycle, then Britain's Adam Smith Institute publishes a paper by Anthony Evans that recommends the Bank of England should ditch its powers over monetary policy and move towards free banking. [...] The BIS paper will be the more influential of the two in policy circles, and this is not the first time the BIS has questioned the macroeconomic assumptions behind the actions of the major central banks. [ Tories, nasty party at it again; spin and positioning - to use something to put someone or something in a bad light. distract. smoking gun and mirrors. avoid. change direction and tone of discussion or debate. ] Now questions are being raised about political interference, Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron calling it an attempt to “politicise the Paris terror attack” and the “lowest politics” he’d seen in years. Keogh and the Department of Health say that it was “entirely appropriate” that they communicate with each other and co-ordinate a response. Communication is generally a very good thing, co-ordination, in this case, not so much. Indeed, some might say that this is desperate stuff, an overt attempt to stir up public fear and animosity towards striking medics.

Warning: your festive meal could be more damaging than a long-haul flight | George Monbiot | Opinion | The Guardian
http://www.theguardian.com/environment/meat-industry - A kilogramme of beef protein reared on a British hill farm can generate the equivalent of 643kg of carbon dioxide. A kilogramme of lamb protein produced in the same place can generate 749kg. One kilo of protein from either source, in other words, causes more greenhouse gas emissions than a passenger flying from London to New York. //&! http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/jun/23/eat-less-red-meat-and-cycle-more-for-your-and-the-planets-health // [...] I’m not suggesting that you eat no meat or other animal products. 'Almost too late': fears of global superbug crisis in wake of antibiotic misuse | Society | The Guardian
Despite European Union regulations aiming to cut back on the unnecessary use of antibiotics, Dr Brown believes it will take more than just legislation to tackle the superbug crisis. Market forces will need to be compelled to cut usage, perhaps when prompted by a shift in public opinion, he said. “Those with a vested interest find ways around legislation. So, in addition to public policy we will need also the power of market forces,” he added. “When the public start demanding meat that has not seen antibiotics - because they understand that the meat may contain antibiotic resistant bacteria - only then will real progress be made. We need education about the threat.”

No mention of climate change in the TPP: Sierra Club report shows “dirty deal” means environmental disaster - Salon.com
The Trans-Pacific Partnership will "fuel the climate crisis" warns the environmental organization in a new report [...] Environmental and labor organizations have warned for years that the TPP, which has been characterized as “NAFTA on steroids,” will mean disaster for the climate and for the economy. “A Dirty Deal: How the Trans-Pacific Partnership Threatens Our Climate,” the Sierra Club’s new report, details just how disastrous it could be. [...] The Sierra Club’s report finds that the TPP will do the following: “Empower fossil fuel corporations to challenge climate policies in private tribunals” [...] he deal will give foreign corporations the ability to sue governments for implementing environmental policies that do not meet companies’ “expectations” or that could make their investments less profitable.

Part II: Is the Government fulfilling its role in the fight against cancer?
The scale of the challenge is apparent. I think we should be as bold and ambitious as possible: scientists, clinicians, patients, the general public and politicians all working together for a single goal: to eliminate cancer within a generation, and Britain at the forefront of this. [...] Patient experience has to be prioritised and this is difficult when NHS cancer services are under unprecedented pressure and the Government far too often provides contradictory messages. The Department of Health must provide the NHS with the resources and the long-term, holistic stability to allow Trusts to invest in state-of-the-art equipment. The NHS needs to emphasise prevention and early detection too, but the risk is that under greater financial and workforce pressure, cancer services will be forced to firefight.

UK's most expensive city facing 'catastrophe' - BBC News
shortage of supply = unaffordable = nobody can afford to live there, work there, study there. or have to commute from out of town for 1 hour or more. // this is not only a problem in Oxford. NHS Grampian has problems of recruiting because unaffordable house prices and rents pushed up by Oil Industry and the lack of new housing. Same for teaching jobs. // all the while building companies make pumper profits and even skirt around the edges to lower the ratio of social and affordable housing they have to provide with each new big project. its in their interest, if prices were to fell, they would make less money. so they build not enough to keep up with demand at all. and not enough so each new builds profit rises because of risen demand and people willing to pay more for the same house or flat from previous year or two or three despite no real improvement in the build technically/energy efficiency wise/or architecture wise - modern, wide open, big windows. //

Europe is becoming an undemocratic continent where force matters more than law | Comment is free | The Guardian
Only banks, global corporations and the superrich have any power against this faceless semi-superstate [...] In the past year, on two occasions when tested, European solidarity fell apart. [...] The real power, meanwhile, sits with large corporations, banks and elites. And here’s the strangest thing: for all the power concentrated at the top, the EU lacks the will to operate purposefully in the multipolar global power system. We know, roughly, what the US wants. Ditto for China and Russia. Ask what Europe wants – in Ukraine, Syria or the Arctic circle – and you’ll draw a blank. In a multipolar world, whose chaos zones are expanding, effective states with clear diplomatic aims and red lines matter.

Doctors, teachers, the police – public servants are demoralised | Will Hutton | Comment is free | The Guardian
To toil in the present-day NHS is thankless. [...] Whatever its merits, a workforce whose morale is already low sees it as yet more evidence that professionals’ views don’t count. Morale takes a further downward lurch. [...] Thus by 2020, the government will have imposed an unprecedented 10-year freeze in real pay across the public sector, shrunk its numbers by more than 1.5 million and offered as little upward career progression to public employees as it possibly can. A new industry of private contractors feeding off contracted-out public work will have been invented, offering even worse pay and conditions than the public sector itself. To raise taxes that might alleviate the crisis is ideologically prohibited. [...] Employees are voting with their feet. Between November 2013 and November 2014, 49,120 teachers quit – the highest rate on record. Nearly four in 10 newly qualified teachers leave after their first year. [...] [ Met warned less police officers on street ]

SNP conference: John Swinney to give Scottish councils business rate powers - BBC News
[ so who is actually going to pay tax? to repair roads, winder service, replace street lights, clean the city, police, NHS, ... to fund councils budgets that are already deep in the red and are cut further over the next 5 years. Public libraries, pools, social care, etc etc. dismantling britian. framing it as job creator. as if tax cuts create demand! lol. its a race to the bottom. ] Colin Borland, the Federation of Small Businesses' (FSB) head of external affairs in Scotland, said it was good news that cutting the cost of doing business was "at the heart of the deputy first minister's message". He said: "If used appropriately, these powers could give local economies a welcome boost and it will be interesting to see how many hard-pressed councils will be able to take advantage of them." UK Chancellor George Osborne has promised local authorities in England more flexibility over business rates by 2020.

Five research papers that revolutionised health - BBC News
Richard Doll was the British statistician working for the Medical Research Council who published a ground-breaking paper in the British Medical Journal in 1950 that concluded there was "a real association between carcinoma of the lung and smoking". He looked at the incidence of smoking and lung cancer in a large number of patients and compared their experience with people who had different cancers - what scientists call a control group. His findings led him to give up smoking. But despite many subsequent studies that have supported the connection, the tobacco industry has not accepted the research.

'Political courage' on drink pricing policy praised - BBC News
Although MSPs passed a law in 2012 imposing a minimum unit price to try to cut the harm it can cause, its implementation has been held up by a legal challenge from the Scotch Whisky Association. [...] "Importantly, we can pay tribute to the Scottish government for the political courage it has shown to implement appropriate policy in the face of stiff opposition by the drinks industry." [...] Research shows that exposure to alcohol marketing increases the likelihood that young people will start to drink, and to drink more if they are already drinking. Alcohol is the world's fifth leading risk factor for disease, injury and disability. In eastern Europe, most of Latin America and southern sub-Saharan Africa it is the leading cause.

Podcast Extra: After Oregon - On The Media
In 2011, Michael Luo of The New York Times was writing a series of articles about gun laws across the country. He requested data from Oregon officials about the state's gun license holders, but when pro-gun rights groups learned he was trying to get the information they lobbied the state legislature to shield the data. Within months a new law had passed: all of the records, formerly in the public domain, were now private. Bob talks with Luo about why the data is important and why shielding it can making searching for answers after a tragedy so difficult.  Bob also revisits his conversation with Tom Teves, whose son Alex was killed in the shooting rampage in Aurora, Colorado, about his efforts to keep the press from turning mass killers into media icons with his group, NoNotoriety.

One Map Shows Just How Expensive College Can Be for Students Making Minimum Wage
[S]ubstantial evidence that lack of information plays a critical role in shaping the financial decisions people make. Consider how a vast majority of people who are currently defaulting on their student loans in the U.S. would be able to halt their financial suffering if they knew they could enroll in an income-based repayment plan that would shrink or eliminate their monthly payments. This map goes some way toward explaining why low-income students are less likely to enroll in college. If the idea that college is a risky investment is something thats gaining traction in well-to-do circles, then surely people who hail from less fortunate backgrounds are even more inclined to think the potential price is too high. // could be seen as balance sheet recession: rising cost of education - & on other side - unable 2 pay w job u can get (asset value). Education is mispriced in UK/USA in a new world going forward! >> youtu.be/_EDGTzOXa_g?t=1h46m5s

being in office for the sake of being in office. // And remember, this government has already used up significant amounts of political capital promising to get immigration down, missing its own target again and again, but continuing to stick by it. Bloomberg EIC outlines editorial vision in wake of cuts | Poynter.
[In your clients interest.] After a day of layoffs that claimed dozens of journalists from the ranks of Bloomberg’s massive reporting and editing corps, Editor-in-Chief John Micklethwait [ex-The Economist] called the departures a painful necessity intended on making the company stronger. [...] “Our purpose is to be the definitive ‘chronicle of capitalism’ – to capture everything that matters in global business and finance,” Micklethwait wrote.[...] "So if you are not intrigued by how people make money, or are inclined to sneer at those who are good at it, or yearn to practice “gotcha journalism” on investment bankers simply because they’ve chosen to be bankers, Bloomberg is probably the wrong place for you..." [...] The layoffs, which come after months of tumultuous relations between Bloomberg’s D.C. bureau and its New York office, have been read as a sign of decreasing editorial ambitions in Washington.

UK seems to relax pressure on Caymans over company register | US news | The Guardian
The UK government appears to have relaxed its pressure on the Cayman Islands to create a register of company ownership, despite David Cameron’s plea last year for overseas territories to do so in the interests of tax transparency. The prime minister promised to introduce a public register of beneficial ownership in the UK and wrote to the overseas territories last year urging them to consider doing the same, arguing that public access to a central list is “vital to meeting the urgent challenges of illicit finance and tax evasion”. However, the Cayman Islands is one of several offshore territories – including the British Virgin Islands and Bermuda – that are refusing to implement the idea after consultation. // sanctions for the vulnerable, disabled, sick, deprived, in poverty going to the food bank without hot water or electricity. but no sanctions for Amazon, Starbucks, Vodafone, Boots, and Co. ... tending to those that donate and go out to vote.
