Cam Newton's sexism controversy is the perfect parable for our time | Sport | The Guardian
How is this story – a workplace matter that really should’ve been resolved privately – even a thing, you ask? Because conflict, in black and white, still makes the most compelling spectacle. Sports have promoted them so well over the years that, well, it was just a matter of time before the less entertaining areas of life got in the game. And so people like CNBC’s Jim Cramer further divided stocks and bonds into winners and losers. Politics are less about issues than optics, as much for the newsmakers as the networks vying to see how many pundits they can cram onto their pre- and post-game show desks. Outrage culture is all the rage, and so the news never rests. No story, however false the premise or equivalency, is too small. This story, suddenly the week’s biggest NFL headline, is proof.

UN report attacks austerity budgets for growing inequality | Business | The Guardian
Austerity budgets adopted by governments across the world since the 2008 financial crash are to blame for undermining the job security of millions of workers and threatening the progress made by women in the workplace, according to a UN report. [...] The report argued that giving women access to decent employment could only be achieved if governments maintained investment in affordable childcare facilities and care for the elderly. When they make steep cuts in early-years education and healthcare provision they are effectively asking women to pick up the slack, it said.

Google staffer's hostility to affirmative action sparks furious backlash | World news | The Guardian
The manifesto argues that the lack of women in tech and leadership is the result, at least in part, of innate differences between in men and women. “I’m simply stating that the distribution of preferences and abilities of men and women differ in part due to biological causes and that these differences may explain why we don’t see equal representation of women in tech and leadership,” the author writes.

After a number of female staff described their disgust at the document on social media, Google sent out a company-wide memo saying it did not represent the company’s views.

An Open Letter to Those Praising the New York Times “Tomboy” Piece
Trans youth are dying because society is telling them, telling us, that we are fake. Trans women and femmes of color are being murdered because the impulse is to believe that trans-ness is fraudulent, that our bodies are threats. A white young person being asked questions about her gender is not a new problem and it is not a problem that should be blamed on trans people or trans affirmative shifts in society or medicine.
Midway through the piece, the author offers the most incoherent part of her argument explaining of her child, “She is not gender nonconforming. She is gender role nonconforming.” What does this mean? What is the difference?

[ Art can't be divided by sexes ] Kaum ein Mann orientiert sich gerne nach unten. An etwas Unterlegenem.

Jenny Beavan’s Oscars outfit struck a blow for all women | Laura Bates | Opinion | The Guardian
This was not the first stand taken against the reduction of women in the industry to their clothes and jewellery. The past few years have seen Elisabeth Moss give the middle finger to the “mani-cam” at the Golden Globes, Cate Blanchett demand: “Do you do that to the guys?” as a camera panned up and down her body on the red carpet, and a series of women from Reese Witherspoon to Amy Poehler demand that reporters ask them more than questions about their frocks. We’ve also seen the actress and singer Zendaya speak out about racist responses to her dreadlocks at the Oscars, and Bridesmaids star Melissa McCarthy design her own dresses after designers refused to dress her, proving that Hollywood’s incredibly narrow definition of beauty is discriminatory on the basis of size and race. [...] find themselves pitted against each other in excruciating “best dressed” and “worst dressed” lists, the awards season will continue to provide a high-profile, glossy microcosm of wider prejudice.

Pando: Female founders, and when good intentions go bad
Last year, I got some well-meaning advice from someone who has generally been very supportive of me and Pando. He told me that I needed to soften my image and tone down my language if I wanted Pando to appeal to more readers in middle America. They don’t like to see an opinionated, mouthy woman swearing. He meant well. But the comment wasn’t too different than an email I got after a recent appearance on Fox News on a Sunday morning, which told me my points were incredibly smart, but this viewer simply couldn’t take any woman seriously unless she wore a string of pearls. Could I please wear pearls next time? Um, no...

Employers advertising for jobs using sex based descriptions could be prosecuted | Daily Mail Online
Businesses warned not to hire someone based on sex, age or nationality Asking for a Polish builder or a 'barmaid' could land employers in hot water Warning comes after latest guidelines were issued on the Equality Act Advertising for 'mature' candidate or 'recent graduate' could breach rules [...] It further warns that adverts that imply a particular age group, such as those that might call for someone who is 'mature' or a 'recent graduate', would breach the regulations. Other examples of adverts that may break the law would be those who call for particular strengths, such as being tall, as this could be discriminatory against women.

Film producer shares shocking intros for women in scripts - BBC Newsbeat
Jennifer Lawrence triggered a big debate on gender inequality and Hollywood sexism last October. She said she got mad at herself for failing to negotiate when she found out she was getting paid less than her male co-stars. The Hunger Games actress said there was "an element of wanting to be liked that influenced my decision to close the deal without a real fight". British actress Rachel Weisz told Newsbeat she thinks there's a difference between stories for male and female characters in cinema. "Women are actually not allowed to be difficult, interesting, complex, three-dimensional," she said. "Female characters have to be sweeter and more likeable than a male character would have to be." //&! bit.ly/1QfkFNB

Get the Davos look: what Sheryl Sandberg teaches us about power dressing | Fashion | The Guardian
There is a maddening can’t-win-either-way unfairness in criticising Sandberg for not wearing warmer clothes – I am pretty sure that if she’d worn salopettes and moon boots, that would have grabbed the headlines even more firmly. [...] Sandberg, like all the men around her, power-dressed. She chose clothes to project competence, seniority, excellence. [...] Sheryl Sandberg has a clear formula for what she wears: fitted dresses, medium-height heels, block colours in the blue-red-purple arc. Not yellow, not pink, no print. No jewellery apart from earrings. It is remarkably consistent. Interestingly, there is not a single sentence in her book, Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead, about what to wear. Her strategy is to neutralise this conversation with a consistent look which is easily recognisable as the uniform of the 21st century female in the public eye. It is a kind of bland, business-lounge glamour: the fitted dress, the court shoes, the colour palette, the clean lines and ...

A Point of View: Does cosmetic surgery really make people feel better about their bodies? - BBC News
In 2002-3, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons carried out 10,700 procedures. Ten years later, they carried out 50,000 procedures of which the most common was breast augmentation. [...] Why are people resorting to cosmetic surgery? There is increasing pressure to look young and beautiful, especially for women, who are still more likely to be judged on appearances, particularly in the workplace. The media is full of makeover programmes glamorising cosmetic surgery and celebrities who look ever more perky. Subliminally and not so subliminally, our culture is changing how humans feel they should look. People believe they will be happier and more successful if they conform more closely to these cultural norms. [...] Pornography is now ubiquitous and must be a big driver of people's dissatisfaction with their bodies. Let me give you an example. Ironically, while the UK has banned female genital mutilation, it is simultaneously having a booming trade in labiaplasty.

Gucci Casts First Transgender Model, Transparent Star Hari Nef
I think the most important part here is ... being stealth vs being out: IMG had met with transgender models in the past but passed on signing them when it became apparent that they were not interested in doing jobs that brought attention to their gender identities. They wanted to be seen as models, not transgender models. Nef did not share their feelings. "Give me all those jobs," she told Bart. "I want to work." And thus, the realisation that being trans still matters to the media and the public at large. Meaning it is still a big deal. A deal big enough that IMG doesn't sign trans models that want to stay stealth, because then they would compete with all the other women in the women's pool ... nothing special about that. // via https://redd.it/41vfr5

Why are women with brain tumours being dismissed as attention-seekers? | Society | The Guardian
Accepting this gender-uniform model of disease has repercussions. One study drew data from 35,875 cardiac patients, 41% of them women, across nearly 400 US hospitals. It found that women faced a higher risk of dying in hospital, subsequent heart attacks, heart failure, and stroke. They were less likely to have an ECG within 10 minutes and to receive crucial medications. And women younger than 65 years old are more than twice as likely to die from a heart attack than men of the same age. [...] There is more complexity to this than mere gender bias. Women tend to present to hospital later and with atypical symptoms. Being a smoker and having diabetes seems to confer more cardiac risk for women than men. [...] It’s not just cardiac issues that are underdiagnosed in women. For every girl diagnosed with autism, four boys are diagnosed with the same condition.

Taylor Swift an 'obnoxious Nazi Barbie', writes Camille Paglia | Music | The Guardian
Feminist writer says singer – with her ‘girl squad’ – perpetuates elitism and reminds her of ‘fascist blondes’ of her youth. Camille Paglia has written a scathing critique of Taylor Swift, referring to the singer as an “obnoxious Nazi Barbie” whose “twinkly persona is such a scary flashback to the fascist blondes who ruled the social scene during my youth”. Paglia, known for seminal feminist works such as Sexual Personae, criticised the singer for perpetuating elitism and undermining female empowerment by surrounding herself with a group of girls who were simply “performance props”. Swift is known as the ringleader of a sisterhood of actors, models and singers, such as Selena Gomez, Lena Dunham, Cara Delevingne and Karlie Kloss, who Swift often refers to as her “girl squad”. Many joined the singer on stage during her tour for her latest album, 1989. Paglia, 68, condemned this as “exhibitionist overkill” by the singer.

Scans prove there's no such thing as a 'male' or 'female' brain | New Scientist
Despite persisting stereotypes, girls are no worse than boys at science and maths subjects, either. “People get wedded to the idea that being male or female is highly predictive of having different aptitudes or career choices,” “This study fights against the idea that these outcomes are based on biological differences, as opposed to cultural expectations.” Other body systems are also often wrongly considered to be either male or female, [...] “There are differences between men and women when you look in large groups, and these are important for diagnosis and treatment,” she says. “But there are always more differences within genders. We always need to look at culture, environment, education and a person’s role in society,” [...] “It’s a shame that people’s experience alone isn’t enough for us to recognise as a society that non-binary gender is legitimate.”

Amber Rose interview: Even when I was a virgin, I was called a slut | World news | The Guardian
// “Women of color are often made to be hypersexual before any of our sexual behaviors or practices are even known”, she says. “That’s a long history that is embedded there,” she adds, referring in part to the United States’ history when black female slaves were seen as sexually available and routinely raped by white slave owners.

George Osborne vs John McDonnell - Treasury Questions - YouTube
"economic security for the country (& working people)" out of the mouth of Mr "Judgement Call" (that is what the tax credit cuts are, according to him, in front of select committee in house of commons hearing on the matter. // As if 12bn have no multiplier. 12bn for the corporate sharing it amongst their shareholders who have already bns, there is no multiplier at all. it just moves the digit after the comma. For the poop it is about paying for heating and new shoes. stupid. could afford welfare bill if corporates were to pay their fair share of taxes and not avoid and evade and no corporate welfare like for the steel industry (picking winners). = Show of Career Politician with some ideoligy and dogma and no principles. HE IS A MERCENARY. NOT A VISIONARY. A Career Politician. Calculated. Opportunistic. No long-term view. // IFS did say, in case of austerity, private sector has to pick up the slack. And it did since 2010. And new figures in household debt/credit card debt shows that.

Trans activist Paris Lees walks out of BBC Newsnight recording - Gay Star News
I’m not prepared to enter into a fabricated debate about trans people’s right to exist/express themselves. ‘There is no “debate”. Some people are trans – I’d have been very happy to go on & talk about the simple issue of human rights for trans people.’ [...] The community was already concerned after anti-trans academic Sheila Jeffreys was asked to appear on BBC Radio 4 show Woman’s Hour on 7 August to discuss her new book. In the segment, she explained without challenge how trans people ‘hurt people and society’. //&! on.fb.me/1N0IVex - Germaine Greer //&! bit.ly/1MnwKb6 - nobody needs a gender theory degree title to decide to wear make-up and dresses. //&! Tax credit cuts - will the House of Lords stop them? - YouTube
what constitutional crisis? democracy. separation of power. checks and balances. getting the voice of the minority heard who have no voice, nobody, no lobby in Westminster to speak and represent them. // 1:44:00 David Cameron and Osborne lied to win a small majority in the general election, withholding the details of further (12bn) welfare cuts in the next parliament if they were (re-)elected. The British public is fed up. Same with LibDems budging on Student Fees post-election and students went on the street in London and elsewhere. & 1:58-59:00 because of that fact, what the gov is asking us to do to waive this through, is unacceptable. & 2:00:00 no taxation without representation & 2:34:00 Poor have to make even more hard choices that Toff can't even imagine to make. & If you don't create middle-class jobs (job creation/industrial policy), you have to top up pay with tax credit for low income. Period. & 2:47:00 proposed amendments were just soft paced cut style. no principles!

Working-class Americans feel screwed. I heard it across the entire country | US news | The Guardian
Donald Trump has exposed the opportunity gulf between those who make policy and those who live it – turning immigrants into scapegoats in the process [...] The disappointment, although often wrapped in anger over immigration, is at its core about diminished opportunity. It is consistent with the economic reality that has persisted over the last three decades: except for the very rich, Americans haven’t seen their wealth increase. The people I talked to are not entirely wrong; their particular job prospects and their particular wealth have been harmed. [...] The angry are mostly people who work with their hands, who feel stuck in a vise tightening from two sides: there is a greater number of people looking for the same jobs and there are fewer jobs available, since many of these jobs having moved overseas.
