Episode 30: Felix Salmon by Product Hunt
Everyone should be doing something lefty. The internet was abt that. Now its everyone wants 2 be big. Optimised. Cool things come out of waste, wasting times, free time, ... eureka effect. Lefty things are not optimised. // "We build a fucking great bridge." Nobody did back then seismic modeling. They just build a fucking great bridge that actually can carry twice the lanes/traffic, you can just put a 2nd deck on it with another 6 lanes. << build 4 prosperity. not optimised. THUS lesson, build ur business that way, 4 prosperity, pay money if u want 2 used it. Dont optimise 4 anything specifically. // Oldest Companies are still family owned. Not pressures by Wall Street 4 growth & profit. "No one is happy being profitable." "You wind up taking risks, eventually falling on your face." #growth-fetish // Venture Capital wants an exit. U put urself in that corner & have fiduciary responsibility. // If u own category/vertical u can sort of set price! & 46 oh hi there world, own platform!!!

Google and blogs: “Shit.” – Marco.org
Landscaped changed dramatically ~2009/10 forward for blogs/content creators. >> blogs have to be now niche, focused, regular content w engagement (due to algos/ranking), ... // "If you want traffic, Google’s arc makes clear to publishers, you’re going to have to pay for it." Include Facebook. Include Twitter (Promoted Tweets). Include Snapchat (Discover, Linkedin (Pulse). >> All gained sized, thus noise, people gaming the system, ... thus owner changes rules and system for his/her advantage and gain (profit maximization). // // even content curators (by hand) can be 1/2 noise. And the summaries are just shorter bouts of noise to scan through (medium.com, Mahalo) - its like joining the dark force. // Things come and go in waves/trends; thus the next wave/trend could be self-published long-form niche content partially free (The Information, ebooks, Pando) which are remarkable (Seth Godin) // snacking is SO western lifestyle, even for information/news - is lowering productivity/focus

Listen up, America: It’s time to start making mass transit free! - Salon.com
But where do the benefits of free ridership accrue, if not to riders themselves? To drivers, who enjoy less congested roads and free parking spaces? To local businesses, who reap the benefits of increased mobility and local spending power? To everyone, in the form of clean air? It’s not an abstract question when the bill comes due, and answering it has proven a formidable obstacle to cities, like San Francisco and Portland, that have studied the possibility of making transit free.

Travis Kalanick of Uber - TWiST #180 - YouTube
MVP - minimal viable product, test of thesis; they rented a handful of cars with drivers in SF & build little app, the rest is history. make move to not have drivers but enable people to be drivers with income. Uber - elegance, design, ... this is now a brand, a status symbol. +++ on demand lifestyle, making magic happen via technology - employing STEM people. +++ could, because of supply liquidity, deliver, at premium, food to your door. +++ because of their technology, their platform, they either could licence out their problem solving platform (ie demand prediction - people just opening up the app - math is an operational cornerstone) to air transportation and or goods transportation. +++ Travis Kalanick at Startup School 2012 - http://youtu.be/rQ6GoY2_Ujw >> multi-product company - for different budgets. Operations, Scaling - one problem that needed solving, a Playbook for expanding from one city to the next. Changing how u live, over months. not decades, today's age.
