Nostalgia
“I mean, Trump’s all about ‘make America great again’. It’s this idea that this American exceptionalism will never die. And it has to die,” he says. He looks out of his window once more, over a neighbourhood partly buried under the glass, steel and concrete of the gentrifiers.

“It has to die because it’s killing us.”

Saudi Arabia has 'clear link' to UK extremism, report says - BBC News
The Henry Jackson Society said there was a "clear and growing link" between Islamist organisations in receipt of overseas funds, hate preachers and Jihadist groups promoting violence.
The foreign affairs think tank called for a public inquiry into the role of Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations.
The UK's Saudi Arabian embassy says the claims are "categorically false".
Ministers are under pressure to publish a report on UK-based Islamist groups.
The Home Office report into the existence and influence of Jihadist organisations, commissioned by former Prime Minister David Cameron in 2015, has reportedly yet to be completed amid questions as to whether it will ever be published. &! http://henryjacksonsociety.org/2017/03/05/islamist-terrorism-analysis-of-offences-and-attacks-in-the-uk-1998-2015/

London attack: Theresa May says enough is enough after seven die - BBC News
https://twitter.com/iyad_elbaghdadi/status/871490728396038145 & https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/jun/04/theresa-may-british-values-muslims-terror-threat - Speaking in Downing Street after a meeting of the government's emergency Cobra committee, the prime minister said the country "cannot and must not pretend that things can continue as they are".
"We believe we are experiencing a new trend in the threat we face as terrorism breeds terrorism," she said.
Mrs May said the UK's counter-terrorism strategy would be reviewed, as she promised to step up efforts to combat Islamist ideology and work with other countries to prevent the internet being a "safe space" for terrorists.
She said there was "too much tolerance of extremism in our country" and while it would involve "some difficult and embarrassing conversations", that must change. [...] Some analysts see this as a last desperate bid by IS to its supporters, following multiple setbacks in the Middle East where its self-proclaimed caliphate is shrinking fast. However, the ideology of IS is likely to survive those defeats and will continue to fuel terrorist attacks around the world. [...] With three attacks in close proximity, terrorism against soft targets is beginning to feel, to some people, like the new normal.
The brutal reality is that this kind of threat is absolutely typical of what jihadists sought to achieve in all their attacks across Europe.

Torture victims in high court challenge to Home Office over detentions | Law | The Guardian
Seven victims of torture who have been locked up in immigration detention are at the high court, challenging as unlawful a government policy that allows some torture survivors to be imprisoned.

The seven, who include victims of trafficking, a man kidnapped by the Taliban, and two men tortured because of their sexuality, say the government should no longer be able to routinely incarcerate people who have experienced persecution. The charity Medical Justice, which works to improve the health of immigration detainees, is also part of the judicial review challenge.

IS in Europe: The race to the death
The BBC's Panorama programme has seen the transcripts of some important interrogations carried out by France's equivalent of MI5, the DGSI. They reveal valuable details about the tactics used by Abaaoud to train and equip IS fighters in Europe. [...] Nicolas Moreau was one them. He was arrested in 2015 having left Nantes to fight jihad in Syria in 2014.
He, like many IS recruits, was a former petty criminal who had converted to Islam in prison and become disillusioned with life in France.
He told his interrogators he couldn't stand the "injustice" and "couldn't see any future in this country".
He went on to provide valuable information about IS's external operations department known as Amni, meaning "security", that sends hand-picked trained fighters back to Europe to inflict death and destruction on their homelands.
"Each gets 50,000 euros (£40,000) to mount an attack," Moreau said.

Syria conflict: Russia air strikes 'killed 200 civilians' - BBC News
At least 200 civilians have been killed in Russian air strikes in Syria, an Amnesty International report says, quoting witnesses and activists. It says it "researched remotely" more than 25 Russian attacks in five areas between 30 September and 29 November. The findings indicate "serious failures [by Russia] to respect international humanitarian law", Amnesty says. Moscow has repeatedly denied causing civilian deaths, describing such claims as part of "information warfare". Russia began air strikes targeting Islamic State militants (IS) and other groups on 30 September, saying it was acting at the request of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Moscow has also been accused of bombing rebel groups opposed to Mr Assad but backed by the West.

Apple raises concerns over UK's draft surveillance bill - BBC News
The US-based firm has passed on its thoughts to a parliamentary committee scrutinising the legislation. It focuses on three issues: encryption, the possibility of having to hack its own products, and the precedent it would set by agreeing to comply with UK-issued warrants. The Home Secretary Theresa May said last month that the proposed powers were needed to fight crime and terror. [...] But Apple appears to be concerned that the bill's language could still be interpreted more expansively and force the creation of a so-called "backdoor" to provide the authorities with access. Apple argues that the existence of such a backdoor would risk creating a weakness that others then might exploit, making users' data less secure. [...] Overseas warrants A second area of concern relates to the issue of "extra-territoriality". Existing British legislation - and the bill - maintain that companies need to comply with warrants for information wherever they are based and wherever the data resides.

We should do God, says report into religion in public life - BBC News
"We don't do God," as Tony Blair's spin doctor Alastair Campbell famously told an interviewer wishing to inquire further about the then prime minister's Christian faith. But according to a report published today, we urgently need to do God - or rather, as a nation, we need to understand religion and belief much better as a driving force within societies across the world, in order to deal with its impact at home. Here, the decrease in mainstream Christianity and the growth of minority religions are raising questions about national identity (what does it mean to be British today?) and how we can live together and accommodate difference peacefully and cohesively, balancing each other's freedoms and rights. Yemen conflict: Governor of Aden killed in Islamic State attack - BBC News
Islamic State militants say they are responsible for a blast that killed the governor of Yemen's port city of Aden. Jaafar Mohammed Saad and several aides died when their convoy was hit. IS says it detonated a car laden with explosives as he drove by. The group has established a presence in Yemen since its civil war broke out. It is opposed to the government and Iranian-backed Houthi rebels who have seized much of the country, including the capital Sanaa. Earlier this year, Aden was recaptured by government troops backed by a Saudi-led coalition.

Überwachung in Großbritannien: Neues Gesetz vorgestellt - SPIEGEL ONLINE
[...] Theresa May betonte im Parlament, dass es nicht darum gehe, den gesamten Browserverlauf zu speichern, sondern nachvollziehen zu können, mit wem Verdächtige kommunizieren. individualism tends to capitalism (each their own coloured widget) vs individuality of the individual. don't mistake the one for the other and you can't achieve the same happiness and well-being with just individualism because it is also based on constant consumption. // what people leave out of socialism and the pundits decry over it. is democracy. democratic socialism. // Plutocracy is undercutting its ability to survive! Problem, the system will take us down with it. // We got ecological catastrophe on our doorstep. Nuclear catastrophe. And Capitalisms catastrophe. //&! Afghan air strike: Kunduz MSF clinic workers killed - BBC News
western world (politicians and vast majority of public) is not comfortable with boots on the ground (since WMD's/Iraq War catastrophe). so it is in the name of war on terror, the drone strikes, with minimal intelligence, making it a hit and miss. = collateral damage. no wonder why uneducated illiterate people join radicalist and extremist movement (funded and stocked w weapons by Arab League through the backdoors) against the west and other religious minorities in the middle east and other governments that hold local power ... when the west drone strike/bombs their village and family to smithereens ... the west wth no accountability. no transparency. bordering war crime. bordering carpet bombing. // US military apologises for bombing - Afghan President's Office - bit.ly/1VufFa8 &! bit.ly/1VuIC5E &! VIDEO: ‘Days of Revolt’ With Chris Hedges: ISIS, the New Israel - Truthdig
https://youtu.be/Go5vYcrwlOM // Hedges begins by pointing out how the Sykes-Picot agreement of 1916, responsible for “carving up the Middle East and turning countries into protectorates,” has been changed only twice—once with the Israeli independence and now with Islamic State. As Hedges put it, the tactics used to redraw the map in the Middle East are both effective and familiar, including the “use of foreign money, use of foreign fighters, tactics of ethnic cleansing and terrorism and this mythical vision—in the case of Israel, the recreation of Judea and Sumeria from the Bible, and in the case of ISIS, the recreation of the seventh-century caliphate.” Alnasseri agrees, opening his response with the observation that “to understand the pheonomenon of ISIS, we need to contextualize it within the setbacks and counter-revolution against the Arab revolutions.“ [...] 'Iraq can not be re-united.'
