Archaeologists find earliest evidence of bread | Science | The Guardian
Using radiocarbon-dating of charred plant materials found within the hearths, the team found the fireplaces were used just over 14,000 years ago.

“Bread has been seen as a product of agriculturist, settled societies, but our evidence from Jordan now basically predates the onset of plant cultivation … by at least 3,000 years,” said Dr Tobias Richter, co-author of the study from the University of Copenhagen, noting that fully-fledged agriculture in the Levant is believed to have emerged around 8,000 BC.

“So bread was being made by hunter-gatherers before they started to cultivate any plants,” he said.

The Guardian view on medical dangers: evolution in action | Editorial | Opinion | The Guardian
This is not as frightening and widespread a threat as the rise of antibiotic resistance, but it remains a chilling example of the complex unpredictability of our interactions with the natural world. The law of unintended consequences is powerful. No one could have imagined that a more efficient way to produce ice-cream might lead to the growth of hospital infections. The real difficulty in both cases is that the costs of industrial food production are not paid by the food processors and farmers who profit most from it. Only coordinated international action can ever fix that – and time is running out.

Amazon fish challenges mutation idea - BBC News
Evolutionary theory suggests that species favouring asexual reproduction will rapidly become extinct, as their genomes accumulate deadly mutations over time.

But a study on an Amazon fish has cast doubt on the rapidity of this decline.

Despite thousands of years of asexual reproduction, the genomes of the Amazon molly fish are remarkably stable and the species has survived.

Details of the work have been published in Nature Ecology and Evolution.

The more you pursue happiness, the faster it runs from you | Zach Stafford | Comment is free | The Guardian
Psychologist Iris Mauss at the University of California, Berkley found that the pursuit of happiness might just leave you worse off. “Wanting to be happy can make you less happy,” said Mauss in an interview with “If you explicitly and purposely focus on happiness, that appears to have a self-defeating quality.” [...] In her studies, participants who were not happy would begin blaming themselves for feeling sad. They thought it was an immediate flag for their failure, making these negative feelings even more counter-productive. The people who accepted these negative feelings as normal, however, were much happier in the long run. So, accepting your sadness could actually make you feel good. [...] For Darwin, emotions were very much tied to surviving, which requires more than just happiness. [...] Be open about how you’re feeling, don’t try to hide behind it or conceal it. // &! keeping a diary talking to and about yourself compassionately.

So race is strictly a social construction? Yes, but that doesn’t make it any less real. When people identify as belonging to a certain group, the biological or philosophical status of the race doesn’t really matter. So race is a very durable construct and people have strong racial identities that are often tied up with physical appearance, but also include a lot of cultural aspects. [...] It’s very important that you create slaves as an inferior class as people. You dehumanize them by saying they are inherently immoral, inherently incapable of developing true human qualities. They are sub-human. This makes the whole slave trade much more palatable.

Fairness: Warum der Mensch Gerechtigkeit will - SPIEGEL ONLINE

How the global banana industry is killing the world’s favorite fruit - Quartz
Tropical Race 4 - The deadliest disease the banana world’s ever seen :: Nearly nine-tenths of the world’s bananas are eaten in poor countries, where at least 400 million people rely on them for 15-27% of their daily calories. And that’s the really scary part. Since the first Panama disease outbreak, bananas have evolved from snacks into vital sustenance. And this time there’s no back-up banana variety to feed the world with instead. [...] In the same way that the Cavendish gets all the fame, brand names like Chiquita and Dole dominate the popular conception of the banana market. But exports make up only 15% of global output; the rest is consumed by banana-producing nations or sold unofficially in regional markets. In fact, the top two banana and plantain producers—India and China—don’t export at all, though they produce a combined 35% of the global yield. [...] [T]he developing-world economy [is] reliant on a very vulnerable crop.

An Unstoppable Killer: New Research Suggests Cancer Can't Be Eradicated : NPR
The sensationalist assertions made in this article (particularly in the headline) don't follow from the results that the article describes. Part of the blame for this sensationalism seems to fall at the feet of the original scientist himself (Bosch). He makes an unfounded leap from the biological result that cancer seems to be an intrinsic property of genetic processes in cells (and the statements "You have to interfere with fundamental pathways", "It's a web of interactions" and "It's very difficult to do") to the assertion "will probably never be completely eradicated". Stanford biologist warns of early stages of Earth's 6th mass extinction event
In a new review of scientific literature and analysis of data published in Science, an international team of scientists cautions that the loss and decline of animals is contributing to what appears to be the early days of the planet's sixth mass biological extinction event. [...] And while previous extinctions have been driven by natural planetary transformations or catastrophic asteroid strikes, the current die-off can be associated to human activity, a situation that the lead author Rodolfo Dirzo, a professor of biology at Stanford, designates an era of "Anthropocene defaunation." // Book "our own downfall at our own hands. BBC iPlayer - Horizon: 2012-2013: Defeating the Superbugs
Documentary about scientists who are tracking the emergence of 'superbugs' - dangerous bacteria resistant to antibiotics - around the world.

- MRSA and other antibiotic resistant infections and diseases (some recent new cases of Tuberculosis in South East Asia) pose a major public health risk.

History doesn't repeat, but it rhymes. Another similar case of Black Death which will decimate significant percentage of world population will occur again one way or the other.

Finding new antibiotics is of critical concern. But Drug companies incentives to research isn't matched by a 'possible threat'.

Prevalent use for negligible illnesses (using a cannonball to shoot a bird) and abuse of antibiotics in meat and poultry industry makes current antibiotics useless against new superbug strains.

- Rise in UK drug-resistant tuberculosis cases
The [Health Protection Agency (HPA)] agency said it was disappointed by the increase which "remains a concern".

Why Fathers Really Matter -
Doctors have been telling men for years that smoking, drinking and recreational drugs can lower the quality of their sperm. What doctors should probably add is that the health of unborn children can be affected by what and how much men eat; the toxins they absorb; the traumas they endure; their poverty or powerlessness; and their age at the time of conception. In other words, what a man needs to know is that his life experience leaves biological traces on his children. Even more astonishingly, those children may pass those traces along to their children.

[...] Genes matter, and culture matters, and how fathers behave matters, too.

**A certain lifestyle and environment switches on/off certain genes and functions - point in time information - that gets carried on to the baby.**

[...] Our genes can be switched on or off by three environmental factors, among other things: what we ingest (food, drink, air, toxins); what we experience (stress, trauma); and how long we live.

IVF: It brings joy to countless families, but as another disturbing study emerges, what is the truth about IVF and birth defects? | Mail Online

Some scientists suggest this is because ICSI subverts natural selection, in which only the best, strongest sperm wins the race to fertilise the egg.
This, they fear, could raise the embryo’s risk of congenital defects.

It should be pointed out that the vast majority of babies born via ICSI or conventional IVF are perfectly healthy. However, there are growing concerns about the possible risks associated with fertility treatment.
A recent study made shock headlines when it reported that ICSI babies are twice as likely as those conceived naturally or by conventional IVF to suffer birth defects such as cleft palate, heart and lung conditions, cerebral palsy and blood disorders.
Professor Michael Davies, author of the study into 6,100 children born from fertility treatment in South Australia over 16 years, described the ICSI risk as ‘sky high’.

Concerns over other forms of assisted conception have also been raised.

The Benefits of Weight Training for Kids -
And that fact, from both a physiological and philosophical standpoint, is perhaps why strength training for children is so important, a growing chorus of experts says. “We are urban dwellers stuck in hunter-gatherer bodies,” said Lyle Micheli, M.D., “That’s true for children as well as adults. There was a time when children ‘weight trained’ by carrying milk pails and helping around the farm. Now few children, even young athletes, get sufficient activity” to fully strengthen their muscles, tendons and other tissues. “If a kid sits in class or in front of a screen for hours and then you throw them out onto the soccer field or basketball court, they don’t have the tissue strength to withstand the forces involved in their sports. That can contribute to injury.”
