Employers advertising for jobs using sex based descriptions could be prosecuted | Daily Mail Online
Businesses warned not to hire someone based on sex, age or nationality Asking for a Polish builder or a 'barmaid' could land employers in hot water Warning comes after latest guidelines were issued on the Equality Act Advertising for 'mature' candidate or 'recent graduate' could breach rules [...] It further warns that adverts that imply a particular age group, such as those that might call for someone who is 'mature' or a 'recent graduate', would breach the regulations. Other examples of adverts that may break the law would be those who call for particular strengths, such as being tall, as this could be discriminatory against women. The EHRC is a public body was set up following the establishment of the Equality Act in 2006, and is responsible for the promotion and enforcement of non-discrimination in England, Scotland and Wales.

Pando: Does a VC’s unconscious hesitation to fund women start at home?
It’s widely acknowledged (by most of us anyway) that there is a culture problem within startups that makes women want to go elsewhere and that there’s some serious unconscious bias going on. But untangling that knot of unconscious bias-- even talking about it the wrong way-- is like defusing a gender bomb

Film producer shares shocking intros for women in scripts - BBC Newsbeat
Jennifer Lawrence triggered a big debate on gender inequality and Hollywood sexism last October. She said she got mad at herself for failing to negotiate when she found out she was getting paid less than her male co-stars. The Hunger Games actress said there was "an element of wanting to be liked that influenced my decision to close the deal without a real fight". British actress Rachel Weisz told Newsbeat she thinks there's a difference between stories for male and female characters in cinema. "Women are actually not allowed to be difficult, interesting, complex, three-dimensional," she said. "Female characters have to be sweeter and more likeable than a male character would have to be." //&! bit.ly/1QfkFNB

A Point of View: Does cosmetic surgery really make people feel better about their bodies? - BBC News
In 2002-3, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons carried out 10,700 procedures. Ten years later, they carried out 50,000 procedures of which the most common was breast augmentation. [...] Why are people resorting to cosmetic surgery? There is increasing pressure to look young and beautiful, especially for women, who are still more likely to be judged on appearances, particularly in the workplace. The media is full of makeover programmes glamorising cosmetic surgery and celebrities who look ever more perky. Subliminally and not so subliminally, our culture is changing how humans feel they should look. People believe they will be happier and more successful if they conform more closely to these cultural norms. [...] Pornography is now ubiquitous and must be a big driver of people's dissatisfaction with their bodies. Let me give you an example. Ironically, while the UK has banned female genital mutilation, it is simultaneously having a booming trade in labiaplasty.

The groundbreaking gender theorist Dr Michael Kimmel of Stony Brook University -- who has written the most important books about masculinity in our current national and global discussion, including his recent bestseller Guyland -- shares his not-to-be-missed TED talk about why gender equality helps us all, male and female. Ellen Pao: ‘I Have Decided to End My Lawsuit Against Kleiner Perkins’ | Re/code
Still, Pao underscored that the deck was stacked against her in terms of resources. “I think it is wrong that employees have to pay in this situation, but I simply cannot afford the risks of more costs to fight a firm with massive PR and legal resources,” she said. “The court system is not set up to create an even playing field.” [...] To be clear, Kleiner and I have not reached any agreement to settle this matter. Settlement might have provided me with financial benefits, but only at the great cost of silence." I've been viciously attacked for daring to start a women's tech site | Media Network | The Guardian
So yes, my site has ‘feminine’ branding. Yes, we cover fashion and beauty as well as phones and drones. And that is entirely deliberate. It’s okay to be a woman who likes tech. It’s also OK to not like clothes and makeup. But many people seem to believe that to achieve equality, we all have to pretend we’re genderless, faceless ‘users’, and that doesn’t help anyone. Acceptance isn’t about ditching who you are to fit in with the crowd. It’s about the crowd recognising that you have differences and welcoming them.

New Statesman cover on childless female politicians provokes heated online debate | Politics | The National
The article won praise too though for highlighting the discrepancy between the proportions of male and female MPs who are parents, [...] 45 per cent of female MPs were childless, compared with 28 per cent of men. Helen Lewis, deputy editor of the New Statesman, who wrote the piece, urged people to read it before criticising, while pointing out that it analysed why both motherhood and childlessness caused problems for women in politics. [...] The analysis was published the week after a row erupted when the Labour MP Helen Goodman wrote in a blog that she was backing Yvette Cooper for leader because she was a mother. // [ Cheap shots. Former Reddit CEO alleges co-founder Alexis Ohanian fired Victoria Taylor, not Pao
via redd.it/3d6asv // nyti.ms/1gz0Iks // yishan - former CEO :: Alexis wasn’t some employee reporting to Pao, he was the Executive Chairman of the Board, i.e. Pao’s boss. He had different ideas for AMAs, he didn’t like Victoria’s role, and decided to fire her. Pao wasn’t able to do anything about it. In this case it shouldn’t have traveled upstream to her, it came from above her. Then when the hate-train started up against Pao, Alexis should have been out front and center saying very clearly “Ellen Pao did not make this decision, I did.” Instead, he just sat back and let her take the heat. That’s a stunning lack of leadership and an incredibly shitty thing to do. I actually asked that he be on the board when I joined; I used to respect Alexis Ohanian. Sure, back then paedophiles, rapists and abusers of any kind often got away with it more or less because of the stigma as victim (you brought this on you) and the lack (non existent) of prosecution and support. Ellen Pao Says Gender Issues Won’t ‘Go Away’ After Kleiner Trial - WSJ
“You have this needle that you have to thread, and sometimes it feels like there’s no hole in the needle. From what I’ve heard from women, they do feel like there’s no way to win. They can’t be aggressive and get this opportunity without being treated like they’ve done something wrong.” [...] Ms. Pao, who was accused in her trial of being both too timid and too aggressive, said “women get criticized on both ends” of the spectrum when it comes to office demeanor. [...] she has removed salary negotiations from the hiring process because studies show women don’t fare as well as men. [ >>> Buffer and their transparency about salary/compensation <<< ]. For Stanford Class of ’94, a Gender Gap More Powerful Than the Internet - NYTimes.com
“If a woman says no, she means yes!” “You’re all [expletive] slaves.” [Sacks] made it clear that he found the graffiti itself deplorable, calling it “sexist and violent,” in his first essay for The Stanford Review, a conservative-libertarian campus newspaper. But he also argued that an earlier round of graffiti — including a crude statement about President George Bush — had been just as offensive. [...] Keith Rabois, another former editor, said in an interview. But there was an ugly side as well; Mr. Rabois left campus in 1992 after yelling “Can’t wait until you die,” punctuating it with a homophobic slur. He said afterward that he had been protesting campus speech codes. Mr. Sacks was almost as abrasive, joking in print about an imaginary course called “Bathroom Self Defense for Heterosexuals.” [...] it was not clear that they recognized the basic concerns of many female and minority students — that they would not have the same opportunities as their white male peers. bit.ly/1Ev1UgU

No skin thick enough: The daily harassment of women in the game industry | Polygon
the internet brings out the worst in people and society - because it is frictionless. wait 10 year and we hope we died 10 years ago. // ""You don’t really recover from this kind of abuse. You just change." She’s right. Often, I’ll see people lashing out at women they perceive as too bitchy or too confrontational. They don’t understand that we are the sum of our experiences. The toxic environment causes us to change. If people attack you online, you’re going to get defensive quickly. If people sexually harass you, you’re going to grow more inward, and more protective. It’s a very human reaction, and there is no way to face this daily reality without it changing who you are."

Venture capital and the great big Silicon Valley asshole game | PandoDaily
(( via pando.com/2015/02/12/how-silicon-valleys-counterculture-went-corporate-and-ruined-everything/ )) --- This is a complex topic with no real “right” or “wrong.” You have to consider what the job of a VC is. It’s not to give inner city kids a helping hand; it’s not to make mom-and-pop dreams a reality; it’s not to help nice guys. It’s to maximize returns and fund companies that have an outsized chance of creating billion-dollar plus outcomes in a decade or less. There is a certain personality type that frequently builds these companies—a mix of outsized arrogance, steel-eyed determination, and even some element of delusion. Rational thinkers don’t usually think they can upend whole industries. People who get impacted by social pressure will be talked out of an idea long before it comes to fruition.

How Silicon Valley’s counterculture went corporate and ruined everything | PandoDaily
Politicians, entrepreneurs, artists, activists, hippies, and corporations all working together to make the world a better place? In 2015, that arrangement seems unthinkable. So where did the dream of tech-powered togetherness go wrong? [...] [...] // As of last November, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in San Francisco was $3,350 [£2200]. [...] So contrary to Gosney’s and Archer’s dream of a techno-utopia that benefits every slice of San Francisco’s population, the tech boom — along with various city statutes that limit residential housing — have made it harder than ever for artists and other members of the counterculture to live in the city. These are the very people, mind you, who helped spark the region’s technological revolution. And that’s saying nothing of the struggles felt by teachers, social workers and other non-tech workers struggling to stay afloat as housing prices skyrocket. [...] [C]ity officials and outdated statutes are as much to blame as tech companies

What Silicon Valley Thinks of Women
Despite that discouraging fact, the two women spent their 20s deep inside the valley’s bro community—a culture that has been described as savagely misogynistic. In inverse ratio to the forward-looking technology the community produces, it is stunningly backward when it comes to gender relations. Google “Silicon Valley” and “frat boy culture” and you’ll find dozens of pages of articles and links to mainstream news articles, blogs, screeds, letters, videos and tweets about threats of violence, sexist jokes and casual misogyny, plus reports of gender-based hiring and firing, major-league sexual harassment lawsuits and a financing system that rewards young men and shortchanges women. &! &! http://www.ravishly.com/2015/01/29/glassbreakers-silicon-valley-women-newsweek &! http://techcrunch.com/video/apple-earnings-snapchat-discover-woman-in-tech/518628679/

My first and last time at the Crunchies — TheLi.st @ Medium — Medium
At the Crunchies, comedian T.J. Miller, a star of the show “Silicon Valley” (which I watch and love), threw out a bunch of playful zingers in his opening act. But then at one point, he engaged with a woman (Gabi Holzwarth) a few rows in front of me by calling her a “bitch”. She responded increduously, “Did you just call me a bitch?” He then said, “Bitch, Asians aren’t supposed to be this entitled in the U.S. … Is this bitch from Palo Alto?” The audience laughed nervously. I was so uncomfortable I wanted to leave, but of course I couldn’t given that our award was coming up. [...] At Crunchies I saw a woman get called a "bitch" onstage, then I did AOL TV & the host mocked me for being pale and made fun of my purse. [...] [ << Show of insecurity by taking the cheap road. Sexism is making women sick | Jessica Valenti | Comment is free | The Guardian
A study published this month in the journal Sex Roles reveals that some of the sexism women face – from catcalling and sexual harassment to sexual objectification and violence – makes women generally more fearful and anxious. The researchers from the University of Missouri-Kansas and Georgia State University found a substantive “link between physical safety concerns and psychological distress”. We already know that violence causes trauma, and that people who are bullied and harassed are more likely to be depressed throughout their lives. Research shows that children who live in violent neighborhoods are more prone to developing PTSD, and that the daily fear they experience changes their psychological make-up so drastically that nightmares, flashbacks and disassociation are common. [...] “It’s normalized, but it has such an effect on your life – women constrain their behaviors every day.”

There's a New Prudery in Feminism and I Hate It | VICE | United Kingdom
I want no part in any feminism that takes, 'We know what's best for you,' as its starting point. [...] Sexism and misogyny are always finding new modes of expression, and I don't wish to ignore the very real pressures women face to look a certain way – pressures I feel, too. I shave my legs. But while patriarchy might mean you'd get shamed if you rocked up at the club with hairy armpits, I doubt anyone's going to laugh at you just because you don't have a slutty social media presence. Sometimes people post sexy pictures just because they like it.

The Supreme Court is about to tackle online threats for the first time | The Verge
The issue before the Supreme Court is whether "a true threat" requires finding that the threatener subjectively intended to be threatening. Elonis is arguing for a subjective intent requirement, claiming that his posts were meant as rap lyrics and not as threats, while the prosecutors are arguing for an "objective" standard—a threat counts as a threat if a "reasonable person" would think the statement is a threat. The government is arguing that it’s enough to use an objective standard, with an exception for "idle or careless talk, exaggeration, something said in a joking manner or an outburst of transitory anger." However, when it comes to the Internet, where context or tone may be more difficult to perceive, this objective standard has obvious drawbacks [...] [UK has] law that forbids electronic messages that are "grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene, or menacing character," [...] "with the intent to intimidate." [...] "[...] most likely to inspire fear of bodily harm."

“I have this really bad habit of thinking that because I am a ‘professional woman,’ I need all of this stuff to make me really BE that woman. Like, I will justify the constant purchase of expensive haircuts, manicures, leather laptop cases, blazers, and conservative heels with ‘this is basically a business expense.’ Except that I cannot write those expenses off, and now I have like ten more ‘work purses’ than I would ever need.” —Sarah, 28 [...] “First, I got into waxing for a while and maintaining that shit really adds up. Iggy Azalea criticises Eminem rape lyrics (aimed at her) - BBC Newsbeat
"The new Eminem rap song is yet another example of a stream of music videos that glamorises and normalises rape, rape culture and violence against women," Betiel Barakia, a spokesperson for Object, which tackles issues around women and girls in the media, told Newsbeat. "It normalises and legitimises forms of behaviour that should be condemned, not celebrated or tolerated. “Beyond structural gender disparities, many respondents complained of a ‘macho, misogynist culture’, with bosses organizing events at strip clubs, and frequent commentary on women’s bodies the norm. That culture was reinforced elsewhere, with female staff told to smarten up, wear lipstick, and some required to attend trade shows where ‘booth babes’ – scantily-clad models promoting products – were commonplace.”

Alexis Ohanian, Reddit Co-Founder, To His 'Fellow Geeks': Stop Being Sexist
The comments (and support for them) I’ve seen over the past few days have really disappointed me and I really hope this is a chance for us to reflect on how we use these tools to foster the tech community. This isn't "political correctness," this is you having the courage to use your words to create an environment that promotes an open exchange of ideas -- not alienate people and certainly not terrorize them. [...] Ohanian points out that the majority of the Reddit community is made up not only of "not-poor straight white men," who should open up and be kind to those who are different from them. BBC Radio 4 - A History of Ideas, Historian Simon Schaffer on Beauty and Evolution, Feminine Beauty: A social construct?
Feminine Beauty: A social construct? // The French existentialist writer Simone de Beauvoir famously declares in her book The Second Sex that a woman isn’t born a woman, rather she becomes one. She means by this that there is no way women have to be, no given femininity, no ideal to which all women should conform.
