Antisemites use the language of anti-Zionism. The two are distinct | Kenan Malik | Opinion | The Guardian
Israel itself combines aspects of civic and ethnic nationalism. As the late historian Tony Judt put it in an essay for the New York Review of Books, Israel is both a democracy in which non-Jews can be citizens and “a state in which Jews and the Jewish religion have exclusive privileges from which non-Jewish citizens are forever excluded” and from which Palestinians grievously suffer. Judt faced great opprobrium for that essay, with many reviling him as “antisemitic” or a “self-hating Jew”. To oppose Zionism but not other forms of ethnic nationalism would indeed be antisemitic. But to oppose Zionism because one opposes ethnic nationalism is a legitimate view.
Judt, who in early life was a Zionist, came eventually to accept that the only lasting solution would be a single, secular state in which both Jews and Palestinians were treated equally. For anti-Zionists like Judt, “self-determination” in that piece of contested land that is Israel/Palestine should adhere to principles of civic, not ethnic, nationalism; that is, be the self-determination of the people, and only the people, who live there, whether Jews or Palestinians.

US-Eltern meiden Adoption afroamerikanischer Kinder - SPIEGEL ONLINE

Employers advertising for jobs using sex based descriptions could be prosecuted | Daily Mail Online
Businesses warned not to hire someone based on sex, age or nationality Asking for a Polish builder or a 'barmaid' could land employers in hot water Warning comes after latest guidelines were issued on the Equality Act Advertising for 'mature' candidate or 'recent graduate' could breach rules [...] It further warns that adverts that imply a particular age group, such as those that might call for someone who is 'mature' or a 'recent graduate', would breach the regulations. Other examples of adverts that may break the law would be those who call for particular strengths, such as being tall, as this could be discriminatory against women. The EHRC is a public body was set up following the establishment of the Equality Act in 2006, and is responsible for the promotion and enforcement of non-discrimination in England, Scotland and Wales.

Becoming radicalised – and keeping a secret - BBC News
Some of these individuals identified with an organisation such as IS or al-Qaeda while others followed their own extremist beliefs and underwent a more personal form of radicalisation. [...] Still in many cases individuals are drawn to IS or other extremist groups because they're unhappy in their own lives and are looking for a cause that's bigger than themselves. "The radicalisation process has been triggered by a personal crisis - the loss of a loved one, the loss of a job," says Indiana State University's Mark Hamm, the author of The Spectacular Few, a book about extremism. The Trans Movement Needs a New, Science Based Strategy | Brynn Tannehill
Tuesday's defeat of HERO highlights several conclusions that the LGBT movement needs to take to heart for the next decade or so. Foremost is that we will not win transgender issues directly at the ballot box, or in the gerrymandered republican legislatures which dominate the political landscape. [...] When opponents frame legal protections for transgender people as a choice between a group strangers (who are suspected of being perverts anyway) and the safety your wives and daughters, transgender people will lose every time. So far, anti-LGBT forces have been far more successful at pushing their narrative. I don't foresee this changing anytime soon. [...] Convincing large numbers of people driven by fear and religious beliefs simply will not happen. &! bit.ly/1MgrDKK &! https://redd.it/3rxwmd &! slate.me/1Op7eck

Tech’s Privilege Barrier — The Information
Behind the articles we write about hot startups and funding rounds is a truth that needs a headline of its own: The technology industry is not as meritocratic as it may seem. For this column, I am focusing specifically on entrepreneurs, the people who found companies and beat the odds to turn them into something big. By many measures, the industry is incredibly fair with relatively few barriers to entry. You could, in theory, build the next Snapchat or WhatsApp with a good idea, a laptop and barely any capital. The reality is a little different. Rags to riches tales (like Steve Jobs or WhatsApp’s Jan Koum) get a lot of attention and certainly exist. But the “anyone can make something of himself” narrative ignores the fact that to go from idea to successful company you need a lot of other ingredients, ingredients where privilege helps a lot.

About Your Skin: What Nina Jablonski thinks you should know about your body’s biggest organ.
[ race is not biological, race and ethnicity is a social construct. baby/kids are not born innate racists. homophobes. transphobic. xenophobic nor antisemitic. ] [...] To most humans, races are creations of the mind that have social reality and that often have physical traits associated with them. So race is strictly a social construction? Yes, but that doesn’t make it any less real. When people identify as belonging to a certain group, the biological or philosophical status of the race doesn’t really matter. So race is a very durable construct and people have strong racial identities that are often tied up with physical appearance, but also include a lot of cultural aspects. [...] It’s very important that you create slaves as an inferior class as people. You dehumanize them by saying they are inherently immoral, inherently incapable of developing true human qualities. They are sub-human. This makes the whole slave trade much more palatable.

Number displaced worldwide hits record high - UN report - BBC News
The document by the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, says the number of people forced to flee their homes rose by 8.3 million from the previous year. The continuing conflict in Syria is seen as a major factor behind the record numbers. UNHCR head Antonio Guterres told the BBC the "world is a mess". "The drama is that if people think that humanitarians can clean up the mess. It's no longer possible. We have no capacities to pick up the pieces. "More and more people are suffering, and unfortunately for many of them there is no chance to support them." Mr Guterres said that the number of displaced people had increased to 42,500 per day in 2014, from 32,000 the year before. [...] The report says that at least 15 conflicts have erupted or reignited in the past five years, including eight in Africa and three in the Middle East. This led to 59.5 million displaced people by the end of 2014, of whom 38.2 million were displaced in their own country, by internal conflict.

Pao also took issue with the “pipeline issue” excuse for not hiring diversely. “I hate the pipeline issue,” Pao said. “It allows people to say, ‘I’m doing my best, it’s out of my hands. Don't Be Awful: Richard Bottoms on fixing Silicon Valley's race problem - YouTube
bit.ly/17fxm5p - "In the spirit of our event, Bottoms did more than simply bemoan the lack of diversity at major tech firms — he provided some real solutions. He praised the efforts of organizations like Black Girls Code, which has become highly visible and influential since its founding in 2011. But he cited a host of older institutions like One Hundred Black Men designed to facilitate professional connections and further the careers of young black Americans — and yet they don’t seem to be on the tech industry’s radar. Historically Black Colleges and the military, he argues, are also fertile recruiting grounds that should receive more attention from Big Tech. He admits, however, that these older organizations share some of the blame and could do more to encourage their members to get involved with the tech industry.

My first and last time at the Crunchies — TheLi.st @ Medium — Medium
At the Crunchies, comedian T.J. Miller, a star of the show “Silicon Valley” (which I watch and love), threw out a bunch of playful zingers in his opening act. But then at one point, he engaged with a woman (Gabi Holzwarth) a few rows in front of me by calling her a “bitch”. Sexism is making women sick | Jessica Valenti | Comment is free | The Guardian
A study published this month in the journal Sex Roles reveals that some of the sexism women face – from catcalling and sexual harassment to sexual objectification and violence – makes women generally more fearful and anxious. The researchers from the University of Missouri-Kansas and Georgia State University found a substantive “link between physical safety concerns and psychological distress”. We already know that violence causes trauma, and that people who are bullied and harassed are more likely to be depressed throughout their lives. Research shows that children who live in violent neighborhoods are more prone to developing PTSD, and that the daily fear they experience changes their psychological make-up so drastically that nightmares, flashbacks and disassociation are common. [...] “It’s normalized, but it has such an effect on your life – women constrain their behaviors every day.”

Was treibt die Menschen zu Pegida? | rbb Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg

A Black Female Journalist Quits Media, Decries Newsroom Racism | New Republic
Among the challenges that make racism so difficult to fix, and so odiously constant, is that white people often don’t even recognize when they’re saying or doing something that cuts their black colleagues to the bone. Or worse, they do recognize when they’re being racially insensitive, but then demonstrate some semblance of regret and move on unscathed. If we can't say anything about this kind of behavior—or don’t—then who will? What’s more, if we do speak up, particularly if we are among the chosen few who are granted a voice in mainstream media, at what cost?

This Labor Day, Reflect On Diversity And The Future | TechCrunch
Our increased awareness has meant that more and more news stories have come out about the bad behavior of members of our community. The list is long, from startup CEOs and their fraternity-era emails, to venture capitalists who attempt to turn pitch sessions into romantic evenings. Yet despite such discussions, there remains a virulent group opposed to efforts to make our culture more inclusive, opposition that I honestly have never quite understood. Thankfully, women are starting to get the infrastructure to support their technology careers that they should have had years ago. While shaming is a useful and important tactic, ultimately it is our ability to foster the next generation of female engineers and entrepreneurs that will change our culture for the better.

European Investor Admits He Pestered Female Entrepreneur For Sex In “Deal” Email | TechCrunch
But the way tech investing works is that people tend to invest in people like themselves. The horrible laws of homophily, the tendency of individuals to associate and bond with similar others, mean that they inevitably prefer to invest in people like them, and the cycle continues. The Civil Rights Movement Is Going in Reverse in Alabama | New Republic
But in other, less obvious ways, black people in Alabama and across the South are as politically vulnerable as they’ve been since the emergence of the civil rights movement. “It’s a total disempowering of African Americans,” Sanders said. “We are going back to the past very fast.” [...] From that perch, he struck a deal in 2006 with Republican Governor Bob Riley that raised the threshold at which an Alabama family of four starts paying state income tax, from $4,600 annually to $12,500. Knight would have preferred to raise the threshold to the poverty line, but he felt that he had to focus on what was politically feasible. It was an approach indicative of Knight’s overall legislative philosophy. “ [...] Sanders and Knight were criticized by some black politicians, as well as by liberal white ones, for being too timid, too incremental. But the two argued that they were playing a long game and that, eventually, they’d achieve their larger goals.
