Don’t Expect Facebook’s WhatsApp to Make Any Real Money for Years | Re/code
“By being a part of Facebook, it makes it so that [WhatsApp] can focus for the next five years or so purely on connecting more people,” Zuckerberg said. Were Facebook not to have acquired WhatsApp, he continued, the pressure would have increased on WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum to eventually “focus more on revenue models” and monetization over the near term, rather than on the company’s continued growth. [...] “I think by itself, WhatsApp is worth more than $19 billion. It’s hard to make that case today because they have so little revenue, but look at the messaging apps already out there,” Zuckerberg said, pointing to existing competitors like KakaoTalk, WeChat and Line, which are already monetizing (in some cases, quite successfully). [...] 70 percent of those returning to the app on a daily basis. Those levels of engagement are unheard of in Internet circles, and it’s why Zuckerberg and company were so taken by the fast-growing mobile app.

Justin.tv Crew at MLG Dallas - YouTube
Justin.tv (entrepreneurs behind it) pivoted several times ...
from reality tv via web
to let others stream on justin.tv - making it a platform
to focusing on a growing vertical; Gaming. launching twitch.tv specifically

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TwitchTV
"After Justin.tv launched in 2007, the site quickly began building subject-specific content categories like Social, Tech, Sports, Entertainment, News & Events, Gaming and others. Gaming, in particular, grew very fast and became the most popular content on the site.[3]
The company then decided to spin off the gaming content under a separate brand at a separate site. They named it TwitchTV, inspired by the term twitch gameplay. It launched officially in public beta on June 6, 2011.[4]"

A Sign Of The Hiring-pocalypse | TechCrunch
An entrepreneur-turned-venture investor told me over the weekend: Booms are the worst time to build a company.

Only capital is cheap. Everything else is expensive — talent most of all.

---

Fed's ZIRP and QE (and Bailout bonanza, moralhazard) - did fuel VC/Seedfund pockets - overthrowing capped supply (investments in companies).
ZIRP and QE do increase the demand for alternative investments. And skews investors risk sentiment. They take on more risk in hope for the next big thing that brings them that more ROI that the market can not produce due to World Wide QE, ZIRP, currency debasement, Sovereign Debt Crisis.

Get Rich or Die Trying | TechCrunch
“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”
President Calvin Coolidge

Determination is critical to success as overnight successes actually take years to build; indeed, “overnight successes” are a myth.

Everything I need to know about startups, I learned from a crime boss — Tech News and Analysis
1. Don’t sell rocks when you can sell mountains
2. Cut out the middleman
3. Don’t shit where you eat

“When someone’s doing something for the money, people can sense it, like a desperate lover. It’s a turnoff.” – Derek Sivers, Anything You Want

4. If it don’t make dollars, it don’t make sense

“A business without a path to profit isn’t a business, it’s a hobby.” – Jason Fried, Rework

5. Closed mouths don’t get fed

6. Be a badass

“There’s only one thing that will make them stop hating you. And that’s being so good at what you do that they can’t ignore you.” – Orson Scott Card, Ender’s Game

The one thing these badasses shared was the source of their power: influence rather than authority. This lesson is the most important and also the most difficult to implement. There’s no pill, book, or retreat that will turn us into badasses. But if we want to captain a pirate ship, we must become the most badass version of ourselves. Kobayashi taught that we lead only with the influence we earn.

Italy - Frustrated Entrepreneurs | Made in Germany - YouTube
The eurozone crisis shows no sign of ending. While Italy's interest rates for government bonds are rising, and prime minister Silvio Berlusconi has announced he'll step down, the country's entrepreneurs are frustrated. They feel betrayed by Italy's politicians, and they've started to protest. We meet business owner Enrico Frare, who has started a provocative newspaper ad campaign in which he is posing nude. His message is that Italy's entrepreneurs are in danger of losing the shirts off their backs -- and he's blaming what he says is Berlusconi's lack of any economic policy.
