Music school grants for poor students going to ‘comfortable middle class’ | Education | The Guardian
The money should be supporting music in state schools, says Robert Verkaik, the author of Posh Boys, How the English Public Schools Ruin Britain. “Taxpayers have the right to know why so much is being given to well-off families to pay the fees for their children to attend high-profile private schools like these. Is it any wonder that the world of dance and music is over-represented by performers who come from wealthy backgrounds?” he says.

Ken Clarke: Tories had deal with Rupert Murdoch for 2010 election | Politics | The Guardian
David Cameron may have done “some sort of a deal” with Rupert Murdoch to win the Sun’s support for the Conservatives in the 2010 general election, Ken Clarke, the former justice secretary, has claimed.

“Quite how David Cameron got the Sun out of the hands of Gordon Brown I shall never know,” Clarke said. “Rupert would never let Tony [Blair – Brown’s predecessor] down because Tony had backed the Iraq war. Maybe it was some sort of a deal. David would not tell me what it was. Suddenly we got the Murdoch empire on our side.”

More than politics, Theresa May’s true strength is her grasp of British culture | Rafael Behr | Opinion | The Guardian
While John Major and Tony Blair struggle with their Brexit defeat, the prime minister has read the national mood and is successfully navigating it // SHE IS NAVIGATING IT? OTHERS WOULD SAY like Blair SHE SITS THERE AS PASSENGER. // Culture and identity tend to be treated as peripheral expressions of whatever is happening in the economy, which is sometimes true but not always. May understands that. She is a more astute culture warrior than economist, and for now that is serving her well. // HAPPY TO DO HARD BREXIT EVEN IF IT HURTS THE ECONOMY "make the best of it" // To win power from New Labour, Cameron adapted to Blairish mode: self-consciously modern, socially liberal, metropolitan and relaxed about Europe. [...] There was always something absurd about “anti-establishment” language in the plummy tones of Boris Johnson or Nigel Farage. But their campaign did capture a rebellious spirit. Partly it was generalised frustration at the state of everything; partly it was counter-revolution – the backlash by people who sensed that their lives, interests and anxieties were the punchline to a joke at a fancy London dinner party. [...] liberals haven’t grasped the scale of their defeat. That is good for May, who navigates through the middle.

Making Britain Great Again by Niall Ferguson - YouTube
Brexit is a misnomer. it is not about British, Brexit is about the English! And Scotland failed to amend the outcome. What matters is age in turnout. The problem of granny voting out. GENERATIONAL CONFLICT in 21st century. And general inequality. Sovereignty was smth for alt-right people (authoritarian liking correlation). [...] and most importantly, IT IS NOT THE ECONOMY ANY MORE, STUPID (identity over pay day). At least for half of it. See also Donald Trump. LIES IN POLITICS HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE POWERFULL THAN 2016 - Brexit and Trump. DailyMail about EEA's. Immigrants take no jobs from "English." Immigration has contributed to growth (GDP). + WILL BE LONGEST DIVORCE. = HIT TO ECON WILL BE AS HARSH AS PREDICTED! HARD BREXIT MIGHT EVEN BE UNDERESTIMATED. [...] Populism (multiculturalism, social liberalism, immigration, environmentalism, feminism, globalisation, capitalism/corporatism) vs Cosmopolitism & Econ Left vs Econ Right [...] Brexit campaign was succesulf as in that leave voters dont think didnt think economically, it would make much of a difference. The more you were for Brexit, the less economics mattered. THIS DIVORCE WIL COST WAY MORE THAN ANYONE COULD HAVE THOUGHT ... and longer. Not 2 years. [...] When populist leaders seek to exploit (populism) policy for their own end (&personal career/gain), the sceptical voter should be ver ver very suspicious.

Jürgen Klopp is a modernising force in the mould of Arsène Wenger | Barney Ronay | Football | The Guardian
Welcome, Jürgen! Just don’t bother talking to the natives. Because the fact is for all its commercial triumphs the Premier League remains robustly anti-intellectual, a product with plenty of sound and fury but little in the way of innovation. No significant tactical model has ever emerged here, no way of playing beyond the successfully reeled-in power football of the years 2005-2011. Not that Klopp comes across as a notable pointy-head. An article by James Corbett in the Blizzard magazine recently identified him as part of a group of coaches from the south-west of Germany with “a highly innovative philosophy” based on the ideas of one Helmut Gross, a man who once spent so long holed up with Ralf Rangnick watching Sacchi videos the VCR machine wore out. Alberto Salazar's response: What questions remain? - BBC News
Salazar has demanded the BBC retracts its allegations. The BBC says it stands by the journalism in the programme. Within two hours of his open letter going online, it was reported that the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) had been investigating allegations that Salazar had skirted anti-doping rules. The reports suggested USADA had taken statements from more than 12 witnesses. The BBC now understands that at least six former Oregon Project members have been contacted by USADA in the past month, and that an inquiry into Salazar is being led by chief USADA investigator Bill Bock. USADA does not confirm investigations. [...] The BBC understands USADA is also investigating allegations that Salazar skirted anti-doping.

How I became a drug cheat athlete to test the system - BBC News
Despite taking EPO for seven weeks, seeing steady rises in my haemoglobin & haematocrit counts & gaining a significant performance benefit, I was clean. He said he could see "traces" of what I had done but "not of a sufficient magnitude to elicit an adverse analytical finding" in the passport. "There is no evidence that you have injected yourself with EPO," said Lundby. "If you were an athlete, you would have gotten away with it." This confirmed my fears that the passport had put a stop to the worst excesses of the Lance Armstrong era but was not sensitive enough to pick up a careful programme of micro-dosing. [...] EPO having such a short detection time the testers have to get pretty lucky to get a positive from a urine sample. I thought the passport was supposed to be the answer but, like Howman told me, it is not a cure for all sport's ills. [...] athletes who choose to compete clean deserve our utmost respect and admiration.

BBC Sport - Rory McIlroy: Masters meltdown 'most important day of career'
The 25-year-old Northern Irishman led by four shots going into the last day at Augusta but dropped six in three holes and ended up carding an 80. "I learned so much about myself and what I needed to do the next time I got into that position," he said. [...] And he believes that experience four years ago makes him better equipped to handle the pressure. "If I had not had the whole unravelling, if I had just made a couple of bogeys coming down the stretch and lost by one, I would not have learned as much," added McIlroy in an interview with BBC Sport . "Luckily, it did not take me long to get into a position like that again when I was leading a major and I was able to get over the line quite comfortably. "It was a huge learning curve for me and I needed it, and thankfully I have been able to move on to bigger and better things. BBC News - Child poverty set to rise, says social mobility commission
The UK risks becoming a "permanently divided" society unless "radical new approaches" are taken by the next government, a report suggests. [...] Housing costs and youth unemployment needed to be tackled. [...] 'Relative poverty' The existing targets were put in place in 2010 by the last Labour government. Currently, a child is classed as being in relative poverty if his or her family income is less than 60% of median earnings. (Here's an explanation of how the median is worked out.) [...] The House of Commons Scottish Affairs Committee defined absolute poverty as "the lack of sufficient resources with which to keep body and soul together". "[A]bsolute child poverty increased by 300,000 between 2010-11 and 2012-13" and "independent experts expect child poverty to increase significantly over the next few years". It also says that "working poverty after housing costs is rising". 20% of Scottish children and 24% of Welsh children live in absolute poverty.

BBC News - More student loans won't be repaid, government believes
Ministers estimated that 28% of loans would never be paid back in full when factoring their calculations. But now repayment levels are projected to drop so low that the government is close to getting back less money than it would have by keeping the old system. Responding to a parliamentary question, universities minister David Willetts said the government had been reviewing its modelling on student loans and now estimated that about 45% would be written off - an increase from 40% six months ago. Economics consultancy London Economics said the "tipping point" at which the costs of the new system will exceed those of the old one would be reached if 48.6% of all student loans were not repaid.

BBC News - Scotland's deputy first minister says Scottish independence is unstoppable
Scottish independence is a matter of "when, not if", according to Scotland's deputy first minister Nicola Sturgeon. She said more devolved powers promised by pro-UK parties would convince Scots they were able to govern themselves. Writing in the Scottish Left Review, she said she would use the powers to build a "fairer country and more economic opportunity for all". The Scottish Secretary Alistair Carmichael has urged Ms Sturgeon to rule out another referendum. Ms Sturgeon, who is almost certain to be crowned Alex Salmond's successor as first minister when he steps down in November, said the referendum had changed the political landscape. She said: "There is no going back - and much as they might have wanted to, Whitehall politicians and mandarins cannot put us back in a devolved box.

Alex Salmond accuses UK party leaders of tricking Scotland into No vote | Politics | theguardian.com
"They're at loggerheads," Salmond told BBC1's Sunday Politics programme. "I think that their vow was cooked up in desperation from the last days of the campaign. I think everyone in Scotland now realises that. "Incidentally, [the] Yes campaign isn't surprised by this development. It's the people who were persuaded to vote no who were misled, who were gulled, who were tricked, effectively. They are the ones who are really angry." He said: "I spoke to the Prime Minister today and, although he reiterated his intention to proceed as he has outlined, he would not commit to a second reading vote by 27th March on a Scotland Bill. That was a clear promise laid out by Gordon Brown during the campaign. "The Prime Minister says such a vote would be meaningless. I suspect he cannot guarantee the support of his party." [...] The refusal to commit to new powers for Scotland prior to the next UK general election is in breach of the 'vow' made to the Scottish people days before the independence referendum. [...] Gordon Brown was said to have 'brokered a deal' with all three London parties."
