Ken Clarke: Tories had deal with Rupert Murdoch for 2010 election | Politics | The Guardian
David Cameron may have done “some sort of a deal” with Rupert Murdoch to win the Sun’s support for the Conservatives in the 2010 general election, Ken Clarke, the former justice secretary, has claimed.

“Quite how David Cameron got the Sun out of the hands of Gordon Brown I shall never know,” Clarke said. “Rupert would never let Tony [Blair – Brown’s predecessor] down because Tony had backed the Iraq war. Maybe it was some sort of a deal. David would not tell me what it was. Suddenly we got the Murdoch empire on our side.”

Jeremy Corbyn has attracted "socialism fans", not Labour voters
centrist left was infiltrated my outright socialists - Although Corbyn was originally elected with broad support from existing members of the party, his power base within it now primarily consists of people who joined it in order to re-shape it in his image and their own. These people might best be thought of as "socialism fans", and are quite different from traditional Labour Party members and voters. They are people who joined the party not because they agreed with its goals and wanted to help it achieve them, but because they identified with the culture of Leftism and sought an active form of cultural participation — much as theatre buffs might join an amateur dramatics club, or history enthusiasts might join a medieval re-enactment society.

IFS: Growth in UK living standards worst in 60 years | Business | The Guardian
The Institute for Financial Studies is predicting that households will be almost 20% worse off by 2021 - IFS calculations show that average household incomes will be 18% lower in 2021-22 than could have been reasonably expected before the financial crisis in 2007-08 - “One of the biggest drivers of the rise in child poverty is policy choices, which is why it is essential that the prime minister and chancellor use the upcoming budget to put in place measures to stop this happening. An excellent start would be to ensure families can keep more of their earnings under the universal credit.”

The Trans Movement Needs a New, Science Based Strategy | Brynn Tannehill
Tuesday's defeat of HERO highlights several conclusions that the LGBT movement needs to take to heart for the next decade or so. Foremost is that we will not win transgender issues directly at the ballot box, or in the gerrymandered republican legislatures which dominate the political landscape. [...] When opponents frame legal protections for transgender people as a choice between a group strangers (who are suspected of being perverts anyway) and the safety your wives and daughters, transgender people will lose every time. So far, anti-LGBT forces have been far more successful at pushing their narrative. I don't foresee this changing anytime soon. [...] Convincing large numbers of people driven by fear and religious beliefs simply will not happen. &! bit.ly/1MgrDKK &! https://redd.it/3rxwmd &! slate.me/1Op7eck

David Cameron risks ‘double betrayal’ of Scotland, says Gordon Brown | UK news | The Guardian
David Cameron is risking a “double betrayal” of Scotland if his government fails to make urgent changes to the Scotland bill, Gordon Brown has warned. The former Labour prime minister said the package of new powers for Holyrood must be amended to give MSPs unconditional authority to top up welfare payments, without any risk of such decisions being vetoed by the UK government. He said such changes were necessary to fulfil the pledge of more powers made by Westminster before last year’s independence referendum and to deliver in full on the recommendations of the Smith commission, which the prime minister set up to carry out a review of devolution. [...] Brown saying: “In other words, if a decision was made by the UK government on tax credits, about child benefit or benefits for the unemployed, and the Scottish parliament did not like that decision, it would have the power if it so wished, and if it was prepared to pay for it, to top up these benefits.”

Talk-Show: Maischberger-Talk empört Schwule und Lesben - DIE WELT
Fighting HIV where no-one admits it's a problem - BBC News
The trouble is that his diagnosis goes smack against the current ideology of the state and the increasingly powerful Russian Orthodox Church. In an interview this month with Agence France-Presse he was even blunter, saying the Kremlin's policy of promoting traditional family values had failed to halt the spread of the virus. "The last five years of the conservative approach have led to the doubling of the number of HIV-infected people," he said. When Pokrovsky argued for the introduction of sex education in schools - a step resolutely opposed by presidential children's rights commissioner Pavel Astakhov - the head of Moscow City Council's health committee, Lyudmila Stebenkova, called him a "typical agent working against the national interests of Russia". Pokrovsky's approach, she told the Russian newspaper Kommersant, would only increase children's interest in sex and lead to a surge of HIV and other diseases. [...] "There are 80-100 cases of HIV infection among women a day."

Owen Jones: if the Tories get more seats than Labour, get ready for a Very British Coup
A commitment to raise the top rate of income tax to the same level as Japan’s, to levy a tax on the top 0.5 per cent of homeowners and to cut public expenditure every year is not exactly parliamentary socialism in our time. But long ago, most of the media & other powerful forces in British society decided that the prospect of Miliband as prime minister was simply unacceptable. His leadership represents a modest departure from three decades of consensus established by Thatcher governments, but any departure is deemed intolerable. The highly personalised “Get Ed” campaign has taken a sinister turn. The Tories & their media allies are now declaring that a government led by Miliband would be illegitimate. A very British coup of our own. /(1) Political Cross Dressing of both parties. (2) Cameron/Tories played fear card. That England (they) will be governed by Labour&SNP. &SNP will hold the whip. He doesnt know what he bargained for long-term. For this victory. Irrecoverable damage.

Robert Peston, economics editor: "Sterling is up (the most for seven years against the euro), share prices are up (especially bank shares like Lloyds and RBS, and energy shares such as Centrica), government bond prices are up. "To state the obvious, investors love the Tories' general election victory. "There are a few reasons." [....] The first thing to note is that England and Scotland have voted for diametrically opposed economic policies. [...] Which means that if the integrity of the United Kingdom is to be sustained, somehow a way has to be found - and presumably fairly fast - to reconcile the English vote for more austerity and the Scottish vote for an end to austerity. [...] Which takes us to the second important uncertainty of this apparently certain result - which is whether Tory MPs will be more or less united than in the current parliament. - bbc.in/1Ip7TFD &! bbc.in/1Kr0Gnl &! bbc.in/1QtJxxf Ed Resigning as leaders &! bbc.in/1H5Z8la &! bbc.in/1FanvxL &! bbc.in/1H3uCFy

SNP conference: Minority Labour government 'would have to talk to SNP' - BBC News
Ed Miliband not even agreeing on a policy by policy coalition, is an affront to Scottish voters, democracy & representation. Westminsters handling of the scottish referendum & the last minute vow without consulting english mps & the consequences, is a symptom of how westminster sees scotland & its people, democracy, representation & their attitude towards them. ed miliband could have said 'everything is up in the air' & conservatives putting him&salmon on their election poster, was to concede the probable election outcome. vs saying what he said - a vague no, preserving what is to preserve & paddle back after the election results come in & hope his party will not lose 1 vote bc of this incident, bc the english constituency is on no good terms with the Scottish // its not the english constituency, its westminster. stupid // vs. bbc.in/1G2piCT - Sturgeon offers 'friendship message' to UK, 'vote SNP & Labour &we will move Labour further to the left in a coalition.' & bbc.in/1EgCXqY

BBC News - Primary pupils need sex-and-relationships education, say MPs
All state primary and secondary schools in England should have to teach sex-and-relationships education (SRE), MPs have said in a report. The Commons Education Committee's inquiry was launched after Ofsted found more than a third of schools were failing to provide age-appropriate SRE. Committee chairman Graham Stuart MP said "young people have a right to information that will keep them safe". The government said it would consider the findings carefully.

BBC News - Obese could lose benefits if they refuse treatment - PM
[ we are all in this together ] David Cameron sees the wide-ranging welfare reforms introduced in this Parliament as part of a "moral mission". He has said they give new hope to people who have been written off by helping them back to work. He also knows taxpayers who fund the welfare state like policies which ensure benefits only go to those who need them. So despite criticism of what some see as an increasingly punitive benefits regime, the Conservatives are floating a new suggestion - possible sanctions for those claimants who refuse help to overcome treatable conditions. On the same day, during a speech in Wales, Labour's leader will pledge to continue his attack on tax avoidance. So David Cameron runs the risk of being seen as someone wanting to crack down on some of society's most vulnerable, while Ed Miliband targets the wealthiest. The truth is both party leaders are trying to persuade "hard-working families" that they're on their side.

When no gender fits: A quest to be seen as just a person - The Washington Post
“I don’t want to be a girl wearing boy’s clothes, nor do I want to be a girl who presents as a boy,” Kelsey wrote. “I just want to be a person who is recognized as a person. That’s how I’m most comfortable. I’m just a person wearing people clothes, who likes to look like myself and have others see me how I see me.” In Kelsey’s mind, the body that would feel right wasn’t the body Kelsey had now. Kelsey wanted a redistribution of muscle, less on the hips and more in the upper body. A lower voice, though not too much — not to where it would sound like a man’s. Neutral.

Sex-Aufklärung: Forscherin Tuider über Streit um sexuelle Vielfalt - SPIEGEL ONLINE
Elisabeth Tuider [...] Fachgebiet Soziologie der Diversität leitet. Ihre Schwerpunkte sind Genderforschung, Sexualpädagogik und Prävention von sexueller Gewalt. [...] << [...] Die Prävention von Gewalt ist Bestandteil von Sexualpädagogik. &! >> ARD Kontraste beitrag vom 06.02.2014 - bit.ly/1AdE0WB &! bit.ly/1AdGl3W
