Lack of legal aid puts asylum seekers' lives at risk, charity warns | Law | The Guardian
As a result, “legal aid deserts” have emerged in different parts of the country due to a 56% drop in the number of providers offering legal aid representation for immigration and asylum cases since 2005, the charity found.

There was an even greater reduction in the number of not-for-profit providers, with only 36% remaining in 2018 compared with the number in 2005.// &! https://www.theguardian.com/law/2018/jul/19/i-feel-safe-now-how-legal-aid-protected-asylum-seeker - 'I feel safe now': how legal aid saved a gay man from deportation ‘Naveed’ fled persecution in Pakistan but his plea for UK asylum was initially rejected

Underfunded justice system 'crumbling', top criminal barrister says | Law | The Guardian
[pure rational rationing (workload) decisions out of necessity - by individuals, forced upon them by Austerity decisions] Failures to disclose evidence in rape prosecutions are a sign of the “dystopian disaster” engulfing the criminal justice system that has been caused by chronic government underfunding, the head of the criminal bar has warned. Angela Rafferty QC, who represents criminal barristers in England and Wales, criticised ministers for trying to promote the justice system as “a national asset” at the time of Brexit when in reality “the fabric of the court estate [is] crumbling”. [...] The Law Society, which represents solicitors across England and Wales, has launched legal action against the Ministry of Justice for cutting fees for defence lawyers, who have to examine increasingly large volumes of material recovered from mobile phones and laptops.

End austerity – and kickstart Martin Luther King’s revolution of values | Richard Kozul-Wright | Opinion | The Guardian
Hyperglobalisation has concentrated massive wealth in a few hands, boosting the cult of materialism that the great civil rights campaigner warned us about // Byung-Chul Han // The real threat now is to the underlying trust, cohesion and sense of fairness that markets depend upon in order to function effectively. Against this, insisting that “there is no alternative” is yesterday’s political slogan. People everywhere desire much the same thing: a decent job, a secure home, a safe environment, a better future for their children and a government that listens and responds to their concerns. They want a different deal from that offered by hyperglobalisation. Prosperity for all cannot be delivered by austerity-minded politicians, rent-seeking corporations and speculative bankers. What is urgently needed now is a global new deal. Three elements – recovery, regulation and redistribution – remain at the heart of any such deal. Book Richard Kozul-Wright is director of the globalisation and development strategies division in the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. Its annual report, Beyond Austerity: Towards a Global New Deal, is published today

Hillary Clinton's book has a clear message: don't blame me | Thomas Frank | Opinion | The Guardian
She seems to have been almost totally unprepared for the outburst of populist anger that characterized 2016, an outburst that came under half a dozen different guises: trade, outsourcing, immigration, opiates, deindustrialization, and the recent spectacle of Wall Street criminals getting bailed out. It wasn’t the issues that mattered so much as the outrage, and Donald Trump put himself in front of it. Clinton couldn’t. [...] But by and large, Clinton’s efforts to understand populism always get short-circuited, probably because taking it seriously might lead one to conclude that working people have a legitimate beef with her and the Democratic party. &! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-41244474 &! https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/sep/12/hillary-clinton-supporters-memoir-book

Why Hillary Clinton’s ‘super-predator’ concession is such a big moment for political protest - The Washington Post
Clinton’s 1996 speech included some language about these so-called super-predators implying that they were a generation of guilt- and compassion-free sociopaths who, in the interest of society, simply had to be contained. [...] Clinton seemed audibly and visibly irritated, saying she would answer if allowed to speak and then, even more notably, “that no one had ever asked her that before.” Then, Clinton essentially moved on with her regularly scheduled fundraising program. There was no accounting, partial or full, for her 1996 position nor how she arrived at her 2016 stance on criminal justice reform. Moving on. [...] Clinton decided to offer an apology for using that “super-predator” and “brought to heel” language. In the 1990s both were part of a relatively popular but now largely discredited theory about rising youth crime. [ tough on crime was] effective tactic with white voters, because in the [US] there are a whole host of persistent stereotypes abt race & criminality.

DWP post for Amazon boss is 'disgusting', says Margaret Hodge | Business | The Guardian
The Labour MP and tax campaigner Margaret Hodge has described as “disgusting” a plan to give an executive of online retailer Amazon, one of the companies at the centre of an intensifying row over taxes, a directorship at the Department for Work and Pensions. Hodge was responding to the news, first revealed by Sky News, that Amazon’s head of Chinese operations, Doug Gurr, is to become a non-executive director of the DWP. The DWP said it would issue a statement, which was not available at the time of publication. Amazon declined to comment. MPs launch tax inquiry after criticism of £130m Google-HMRC deal | Business | The Guardian
MPs have launched an inquiry into the UK’s tax system after the government was accused of allowing Google to pay too little in a £130m deal. The House of Commons Treasury committee announced that it would examine whether a radical shakeup of corporation tax was needed, amid concern that Google has been allowed to get away with an effective rate of 3%. The inquiry is not directed at Google, but will investigate the UK’s shrinking corporate tax base more widely and whether HMRC is doing enough to tackle avoidance. It will ask whether there needs to be a radical shakeup of the system, and whether business taxation could be based on turnover rather than profits. Andrew Tyrie, chairman of the committee, said the UK’s tax law had become too elastic, allowing companies to get away legally with paying too little. Google agrees £130m UK tax deal with HMRC - BBC News
Google has agreed to pay £130m in back taxes after an "open audit" of its accounts by the UK tax authorities. France to overhaul secularism teaching to help stop radicalisation | World news | The Guardian
The French principle of secularism has been twisted by politicians and so often wrongly used to attack Islam that schoolchildren have been left baffled, the French education minister has warned. Najat Vallaud-Belkacem told the Guardian that after last year’s devastating jihadi attacks in Paris, France was overhauling the teaching of secularism and civic values as part of the country’s drive against terrorism and radicalisation. “We have to reappropriate the concept of laïcité [secularism] so we can explain to our young pupils that whatever their faith, they belong to this idea and they’re not excluded. Secularism is not something against them; it protects them,” she said.

[...] Still in many cases individuals are drawn to IS or other extremist groups because they're unhappy in their own lives and are looking for a cause that's bigger than themselves. "The radicalisation process has been triggered by a personal crisis - the loss of a loved one, the loss of a job," says Indiana State University's Mark Hamm, the author of The Spectacular Few, a book about extremism. "Typically there's somebody in cyberspace who shows them a way - walks them from the brink of a cliff." // brutality of society at large. enabled by forces and pillars capitalism. ie your worth as a person is defined by your net work and credit score. what education you have (thus family). //&! bit.ly/1N9qQfa

No mention of climate change in the TPP: Sierra Club report shows “dirty deal” means environmental disaster - Salon.com
The Trans-Pacific Partnership will "fuel the climate crisis" warns the environmental organization in a new report [...] Environmental and labor organizations have warned for years that the TPP, which has been characterized as “NAFTA on steroids,” will mean disaster for the climate and for the economy. “A Dirty Deal: How the Trans-Pacific Partnership Threatens Our Climate,” the Sierra Club’s new report, details just how disastrous it could be. [...] The Sierra Club’s report finds that the TPP will do the following: “Empower fossil fuel corporations to challenge climate policies in private tribunals” [...] he deal will give foreign corporations the ability to sue governments for implementing environmental policies that do not meet companies’ “expectations” or that could make their investments less profitable.

UK seems to relax pressure on Caymans over company register | US news | The Guardian
The UK government appears to have relaxed its pressure on the Cayman Islands to create a register of company ownership, despite David Cameron’s plea last year for overseas territories to do so in the interests of tax transparency. The prime minister promised to introduce a public register of beneficial ownership in the UK and wrote to the overseas territories last year urging them to consider doing the same, arguing that public access to a central list is “vital to meeting the urgent challenges of illicit finance and tax evasion”. However, the Cayman Islands is one of several offshore territories – including the British Virgin Islands and Bermuda – that are refusing to implement the idea after consultation. // sanctions for the vulnerable, disabled, sick, deprived, in poverty going to the food bank without hot water or electricity. but no sanctions for Amazon, Starbucks, Vodafone, Boots, and Co. ... tending to those that donate and go out to vote.

A nanny state for those that cost the state (directly, and now), because it fits their message 'only work pays'! what a double standard. what a intellectual dishonesty and cynicism. And again putting it like it is a 'lifestyle choice' being addicted and or obese. That one chose consciously, in order not to 'work.' // if people work, and are overweight, have diabetes, obese, high blood pressure, take statins, runing their liver long-term with alcohol abuse (functioning alcoholic, drug user) etc etc - costing the NHS especially long-term (sick population) - it is ok, but if they don't work. it's not ok. // after all, substance abuse, in majority of cases has a mental health (history) & social environment (nurture) component to it. As Tim Cook criticizes Indiana, Apple imposes labor discrimination in its own backyard | PandoDaily
Using background checks on construction workers to discriminate against those charged with or convicted of felonies is reportedly very rare in the construction industry, one of the industries that provide opportunities for ex-convicts to get back on their feet in life. Discrimination against ex-offenders is a major ongoing problem that exacerbates poverty, inequality and racism; in an incarceration-mad state like California, Apple’s policy imposed on construction companies it hires means worsening inequality and cycles of poverty for a problem that disproportionately affects people of color. In 2012, the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced a new crackdown on illegal employment discrimination against people with criminal records, which are only permitted depending on the nature of the job. 21 Women on the Dumbest Things They’ve Bought -- The Cut
“I have this really bad habit of thinking that because I am a ‘professional woman,’ I need all of this stuff to make me really BE that woman. Like, I will justify the constant purchase of expensive haircuts, manicures, leather laptop cases, blazers, and conservative heels with ‘this is basically a business expense.’ Except that I cannot write those expenses off, and now I have like ten more ‘work purses’ than I would ever need.” —Sarah, 28 [...] “First, I got into waxing for a while and maintaining that shit really adds up. [...] “Trendy clothes. [...] When I moved to New York, I had this really fucking dumb Carrie Bradshaw ideal of how I should dress and act. I thought that it was normal to spend a bunch of money on trendy shoes, [...] My brain can’t accept that it will never own Manolos if I also want to own a home someday.” [...] I spend money on makeup, blowouts, and nail art, in huge part for the Instagram likes. It is probably the saddest thing about myself.

Snapchat and Spiegel’s Interesting Call on the Hong Kong Demonstrations | TechCrunch
@EvanSpiegel on why @Snapchat chose not to make an 'Our Story' for the Hong Kong protests: 'One of my pet peeves over time is how the technology industry has tried to sell counterculture. It’s tried to sell the revolution. We’ve been really resistant to doing this' || WRONG. Hypocrisy. Selling a pro-democracy movement as counterculture is wrong. it's deceitful. Snapchat and it's investors only hold open the door for China. As long as they don't upset the Chinese regime, they can operate in the future in China. Apps that went "against the China's regiem politics" were shut out of this country, +1bn potential users. It wouldn't be in line with the fiduciary responsibility (to its investors) that Evan Spiegel/Snapchat has to operate along.

NSA: Snowden-Dokumente bei The Intercept, TAREX-Basis in Deutschland - SPIEGEL ONLINE

Lena Dunham and Aziz Ansari’s Big Book Deals – Flavorwire
But out of the two, which deal was the source of 1,000 thinkpieces and vague concern trolling about whether-or-not a big deal like this was “right?” You guessed it, Dunham’s. Was there a similar level of outrage for Ansari’s book deal? No — and perhaps speaking to his smaller footprint, culturally, it basically was reduced to a side note. The difference here speaks to a couple of things. Is gender playing a big role? Certainly! Also the difference in Dunham selling a book of essays “about her life” versus Ansari’s take on “modern love” where he was inspired “after reading Malcolm Gladwell.” Ansari’s book will be about his life, to be sure, but it’s not sold to the public as memoir in the same way. It is also probably the result of “Lena Dunham” being a loaded gun in the media representing a lot of ideas regarding young women and power, whereas Ansari, on the other hand, doesn’t represent every young man ever — or every young man of Indian-American heritage, either.
