Ken Clarke: Tories had deal with Rupert Murdoch for 2010 election | Politics | The Guardian
David Cameron may have done “some sort of a deal” with Rupert Murdoch to win the Sun’s support for the Conservatives in the 2010 general election, Ken Clarke, the former justice secretary, has claimed.

“Quite how David Cameron got the Sun out of the hands of Gordon Brown I shall never know,” Clarke said. “Rupert would never let Tony [Blair – Brown’s predecessor] down because Tony had backed the Iraq war. Maybe it was some sort of a deal. David would not tell me what it was. Suddenly we got the Murdoch empire on our side.”

Plastic kills – let's stop treating it like a normal part of modern life
The oceans are now so full of man-made detritus that our health is being put at risk too. About a third of fish caught off the coast of the UK now contain traces of plastic. Some plastics contain diethylhexyl phthalate, which is toxic and thought to be carcinogenic. When you bear in mind that British seafood eaters may ingest more than 10,000 pieces of plastic each year, it’s obvious that plastic has been a complete disaster for health.

Google staffer's hostility to affirmative action sparks furious backlash | World news | The Guardian
The manifesto argues that the lack of women in tech and leadership is the result, at least in part, of innate differences between in men and women. “I’m simply stating that the distribution of preferences and abilities of men and women differ in part due to biological causes and that these differences may explain why we don’t see equal representation of women in tech and leadership,” the author writes.

After a number of female staff described their disgust at the document on social media, Google sent out a company-wide memo saying it did not represent the company’s views.

No one would listen to Stephen Fry if he was poor
Now he expects us to join him in condemning people who have been affected by events they could not possibly control.

And there are many of them. A recent study found that up to 80% of abused people had at least one psychiatric disorder by their 21st birthday: depression, anxiety, thoughts of suicide. Schoolyard bullying can be just as destructive, with one study arguing that bullying carried out by other children is five times more likely than neglect or abuse at home to cause anxiety.

Just as the body’s immune system is still forming in childhood, so too is the brain’s stress response. The effects of childhood trauma cannot be overstated: abuse, sexual abuse in particular, is devastating. Children need love, and they need to feel safe. JJ Abrams' Bad Robot introduces diversity quota | Film | The Guardian
“We’ve been working to improve our internal hiring practices for a while, but the Oscars controversy was a wake-up call to examine our role in expanding opportunities internally at Bad Robot and externally with our content and partners,” said Abrams. “We’re working to find a rich pool of representative, kick-ass talent and give them the opportunity they deserve and we can all benefit from. It’s good for audiences and it’s good for the bottom line.” Bad Robot will reportedly work with its agency partner CAA and studios Warner Bros and Paramount to ensure women and minorities are submitted for writing, directing and acting jobs for the company in direct proportion to their representation among the US population.

Black MP Dawn Butler reveals she's witnessed 'many' incidents of racism in Parliament | Daily Mail Online
Days later she claimed that black Tory MP Kwasi Kwarteng had been selected for the Tory party in his safe Surrey seat for 'window dressing' and caused outrage by claiming he preferred the company of white people.   Explaining her latest experience of racism, Ms Butler told BBC 5 Live today: 'There was a time when I was in the lift. It was a Members' lift that Members of Parliament use specially in cases [where] we have get to places quickly.  'I was in the lift and some other MP said, 'This lift really isn't for cleaners'.' Ms Butler refused to name the MPs involved, but repeated a similar encounter she had with the former Tory minister David Heatcote-Amory in an MPs only bar.  She wrote in 2008 how she was confronted Mr Heathcoate-Amory in a MPs-only bar. 'He actually said to me, 'What are you doing here? This is for Members only',' she wrote. [...] 'He then proceeded to ask me, 'Are you a member?' And I said, 'Yes I am, are you?' And he turned around and said to his colleague,

Meet the conservationists who believe that burning is good for wildlife | George Monbiot | Environment | The Guardian
Why is it that practices we recognise as destructive when we see them elsewhere in the world are judged “environmentally friendly” here? When we see land being burnt in Indonesia or Brazil, do we call it conservation, or do we call it destruction? Because it damages soil and hydrology, incinerates wildlife and simplifies ecosystems, destruction is the correct term. Burning on Dartmoor has the same impacts. It’s about as environmentally friendly as tipping bleach into a river. [...] I happen to believe that too much weight is given to sheep farming, and too little to wildlife. But where there are no tenants and no grazing, instead of using this as an opportunity for ecological restoration, the Exmoor authority is bringing in its own sheep to ensure that seedlings can’t grow and wildlife can’t recover. It’s utter madness.

The roof is being fixed but beware the house crashing beneath it | Business | The Guardian
Consumer spending is driving economic growth but household debt and the house price-income ratio is at a record high. Be afraid [...] It is worth recalling that when Osborne became chancellor five and a half years ago that he had two big objectives. The first was to repair the hole in the public finances, which is still very much a work in progress. The other was to shift the centre of gravity of the economy back towards making things for export. This remains a pipedream. [...] Despite the welcome pickup in business investment, the main driver of growth has been consumer spending, which has been boosted by low interest rates, the fall in inflation caused by lower oil prices, and a modest acceleration in earnings. [...] “not the ideal shape for the recovery” and it can say that again. The current recovery looks like all the previous recoveries. Scans prove there's no such thing as a 'male' or 'female' brain | New Scientist
Despite persisting stereotypes, girls are no worse than boys at science and maths subjects, either. “People get wedded to the idea that being male or female is highly predictive of having different aptitudes or career choices,” “This study fights against the idea that these outcomes are based on biological differences, as opposed to cultural expectations.” Other body systems are also often wrongly considered to be either male or female, [...] “There are differences between men and women when you look in large groups, and these are important for diagnosis and treatment,” she says. “But there are always more differences within genders. We always need to look at culture, environment, education and a person’s role in society,” [...] “It’s a shame that people’s experience alone isn’t enough for us to recognise as a society that non-binary gender is legitimate.”

Pando: “Is this thing on, bro?”
Earlier this week, The Information published the results of a three-month research project on diversity in venture capital. The results were exactly as you’d expect: There isn’t any. Diversity in venture capital is far worse than the tech industry as a whole. In an op-ed on the site, Social Capital’s Chamath Palihapitiya wrote something that was surprising: He aggressively called out the industry. Not off the record. Not in whispers with journalists. Not saying “some VCs.” He went full barrels on the industry writ-large

Firm 'hides' university when recruits apply - BBC News
There will be a "university-blind" approach to selection, so that the name of the university attended will not be known. The aim is to find students with "potential" and to prevent the recruitment process producing an intake from a narrow range of universities and social backgrounds. "Improving social mobility is one of the UK's biggest challenges," said David Sproul, senior partner and chief executive of Deloitte UK. But Mr Sproul said there was also a "business imperative", as firms needed "to hire people who think and innovate differently, come from a variety of backgrounds and bring a range of perspectives". The move by Deloitte is the latest in a wave of changes by graduate recruiters wanting to look beyond academic results.

[nasty party. no representation 4 sick, vulnerable *disabled. minority of society. dont cut @ur constituency; babyboomers, middle class, pensioners, Establishment, Privileged, corp, tax avoiders, oligarchs, ... ] IDS can talk of supporting people in their returns to employment, but the system his department has created is anything but supportive. It is frightening, punitive and messy. If we really want to support people to get better both through work and in order to work, ESA should be in the care of the Department of Health, not Work and Pensions. Illness and disability are not matters of employment, but of health. Accountancy firm scraps education 'barrier' - BBC News
[ + education path bias ] In a bid to boost workplace diversity, Ernst and Young (EY) will choose which applicants to interview based on their performance in online tests. School-leavers have until now needed the equivalent of three Bs at A-level and graduate applicants a 2:1 degree. Qualifications "will no longer act as a barrier to getting a foot in the door," said Maggie Stilwell of EY. In May another major accountancy firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers, announced it would no longer use A-level grades as a way of selecting graduate recruits. EY has gone one step further by removing the requirement for a minimum degree classification for graduates and hiding all details of schools and universities from the recruiters until the very end of the process so that interviews are carried out "blind". [...] "screening students based on academic performance alone was too blunt an approach to recruitment". [...] no evidence of correlation between academic success and future [professional] success

Intel Capital’s Lisa Lambert on the firm’s new $125 million Diversity Fund | PandoDaily
The plan is to invest in what we think is representative of the global society. All the data points to more diversity in our country and across the globe. As these communites have more influence and more purchasing power, they should be involved in the development of products that are going to serve the market they represent. We think it is good business. Designing products and investing in companies that Intel can partner with that serve these communities. [...] But also, from a practical standpoint, if you look at the venture capital community as a whole, it is pretty homogenous in terms of demographic breakdown. I think a lot of them aren’t sourcing these diverse deals because they don’t have access to those networks and have those communities. [...] I think the perception that there wouldn’t be deal flow, and what we found is that that is most definitely not true. Pao said she did not think Silicon Valley, a place where it’s possible to have all white male meetings all day every day, was a meritocracy. “I think SV aspires to be a true meritocracy … but there is not an even track to success. No. With 6% women in VC, level of funding for women-led startups, it just doesn’t seem that that could possibly be the case.” // bit.ly/1HV44Hg Williams leads unconscious bias workshops that aim to educate employees on the science behind decision-making and encourage a "culture where employees are comfortable with -- & held accountable for -- calling out prejudice, both blatant and subtle.

Silicon Valley is Lying to You (by GQ)
We're forever thankful to Silicon Valley for giving us the iPhone, omnipotent search engines, and swipe-simple hookups. But now that America's most vaunted industry has also become its most self-satisfied, Silicon Valley is veering toward fall-of-Rome territory. Which is why it needs to blow up these seven myths about itself before it's too late // Myth #1: Silicon Valley Is the Universe's Only True Meritocracy. Myth #2: Silicon Valley Is Bringing Us Closer Together. What new human contact these start-ups actually do foster is barely human contact at all—everything is mediated through an algorithm, a button, a swipe, or a GPS beacon. Myth #3: Younger Is Smarter, Safer, and Inarguably Better. Myth #4: School Is for Suckers, Just Drop Out [ Income disparaty between high school degree and college degree will widen further during the Industrial Revolution 2.0. Not everybody can be lucky, creating a unicorn while driving Uber +3 days a week ].

Einkommensverteilung), Innovation (u.a. Bildungsqualität und Start-up-Quote), Diversität (Integrationsindex, Bildungsmobiliät), Internetzugang, Nachhaltigkeit (Gesundheits- und Vorsorgequalität, Ressourcenproduktivität). // Economic Indicators are about the past! [...] It was a diverse crowd, by some metrics: [...] But, in a crowd of over a hundred minglers, I counted no more than 10 women. [...] As Marc Benioff told Kara Swisher during a very different fireside chat at the Lesbians Who Tech Summit [...], the responsibility for improving Silicon Valley’s gender ratio lies most heavily with early stage startups, whose formative hiring decisions will cement the culture as the company grows. Don't Be Awful: Richard Bottoms on fixing Silicon Valley's race problem - YouTube
bit.ly/17fxm5p - "In the spirit of our event, Bottoms did more than simply bemoan the lack of diversity at major tech firms — he provided some real solutions. He praised the efforts of organizations like Black Girls Code, which has become highly visible and influential since its founding in 2011. But he cited a host of older institutions like One Hundred Black Men designed to facilitate professional connections and further the careers of young black Americans — and yet they don’t seem to be on the tech industry’s radar. Historically Black Colleges and the military, he argues, are also fertile recruiting grounds that should receive more attention from Big Tech. He admits, however, that these older organizations share some of the blame and could do more to encourage their members to get involved with the tech industry.

My first and last time at the Crunchies — TheLi.st @ Medium — Medium
At the Crunchies, comedian T.J. Miller, a star of the show “Silicon Valley” (which I watch and love), threw out a bunch of playful zingers in his opening act. But then at one point, he engaged with a woman (Gabi Holzwarth) a few rows in front of me by calling her a “bitch”. She responded increduously, “Did you just call me a bitch?” He then said, “Bitch, Asians aren’t supposed to be this entitled in the U.S. … Is this bitch from Palo Alto?” The audience laughed nervously. I was so uncomfortable I wanted to leave, but of course I couldn’t given that our award was coming up. [...] At Crunchies I saw a woman get called a "bitch" onstage, then I did AOL TV & the host mocked me for being pale and made fun of my purse. [...] [ << Show of insecurity by taking the cheap road. “Beyond structural gender disparities, many respondents complained of a ‘macho, misogynist culture’, with bosses organizing events at strip clubs, and frequent commentary on women’s bodies the norm. That culture was reinforced elsewhere, with female staff told to smarten up, wear lipstick, and some required to attend trade shows where ‘booth babes’ – scantily-clad models promoting products – were commonplace.”

In case you needed another reason to promote diversity in tech… | PandoDaily
The survey found that 67 percent of respondents say diversity is “an important factor when evaluating companies and job offers.” So by valuing diversity, companies will not only find talent across all demographics — they will also increase their chances of attracting more talent simply by virtue of being diverse. It’s a gift that keeps on giving. Unsurprisingly, women and minority groups value diversity most, with 72 percent of women, 89 percent of African Americans, 80 percent of Asians, and 70 percent of Latinos calling it an important factor. Interestingly, military veterans were also among those most likely to value diversity at 65 percent. Amazon's Monopoly Must Be Broken Up: A Radical Plan for the Tech Giant | New Republic
n Thiel’s phrasing: “Creative monopolies aren’t just good for the rest of society; they’re powerful engines for making it better.” Thiel makes an important point: The Internet-age monopolies are a different species; they flummox our conventional ways of thinking about corporate concentration and have proved especially elusive to those who ponder questions of antitrust, the discipline of law that aims to curb threats to the competitive marketplace. Part of the issue is the laws themselves, which were conceived to manage an industrial economy—and have, over time, evolved to focus on a specific set of narrow questions that have little to do with the core problem at hand. Sexualkunde-Reform in Niedersachsen: Schüler wettern gegen Abgeordnete - SPIEGEL ONLINE
[...] Vermittlung von Toleranz im Bildungsplan verankern. This Labor Day, Reflect On Diversity And The Future | TechCrunch
Our increased awareness has meant that more and more news stories have come out about the bad behavior of members of our community. The list is long, from startup CEOs and their fraternity-era emails, to venture capitalists who attempt to turn pitch sessions into romantic evenings. Yet despite such discussions, there remains a virulent group opposed to efforts to make our culture more inclusive, opposition that I honestly have never quite understood. Thankfully, women are starting to get the infrastructure to support their technology careers that they should have had years ago. While shaming is a useful and important tactic, ultimately it is our ability to foster the next generation of female engineers and entrepreneurs that will change our culture for the better.

BBC News - 'Deeply elitist UK locks out diversity at top'
http://bit.ly/1lubeuO - The interests of those who dominate British society are disparate; indeed, they often conflict with one another. The establishment includes politicians who make laws; media barons who set the terms of debate; businesses and financiers who run the economy; police forces that enforce a law that is rigged in favour of the powerful. The establishment is where these interests and worlds intersect, either consciously or unconsciously. It is unified by a common mentality, which holds that those at the top deserve their power and their ever-growing fortunes, and which might be summed up by the advertising slogan "Because I'm worth it". This is the mentality that has driven politicians to pilfer expenses, businesses to avoid tax, and City bankers to demand ever greater bonuses while plunging the world into economic disaster. All of these things are facilitated – even encouraged – by laws that are geared to cracking down on the smallest of misdemeanours committed ...

Between ages 25 and 30, 41% of the young talent with credentials in those subject matters are female … [but] 52% of this talent drops out … The most important antigen is the machismo that continues to permeate these work environments … 63% of women in science, engineering and technology have experienced sexual harassment. European Investor Admits He Pestered Female Entrepreneur For Sex In “Deal” Email | TechCrunch
But the way tech investing works is that people tend to invest in people like themselves. The horrible laws of homophily, the tendency of individuals to associate and bond with similar others, mean that they inevitably prefer to invest in people like them, and the cycle continues. Men tend to invest in men. Yet tech is forming the world as we know it today. It pervades every part of our world and will do for rest of human history. And this is a world that women occupy. Women who have their own capacities and ambitions to succeed and to make their impact in their own way. [...] We have to work out what it means for men and women to work equally in this industry — since we have so few examples of women rising to the top. || 2nd girl @luciemontel / @geschehaas facebook.com/geschehaas linkedin.com/pub/gesche-haas/4/773/b59 || http://bit.ly/VHbD0c http://bit.ly/1tnKPPf http://bit.ly/1obLldz http://tnw.co/1AxSAW1 http://dailym.ai/1qqqmFj http://bit.ly/1tjEy80 +YC http://on.recode.net/YFCETT
