Hunt 'misrepresented' data on 7-day NHS - BBC News
The Labour leader attacked Jeremy Hunt after the BBC revealed the health secretary used academically unverified and unpublished data to back his plans. Last July, in the pay row with junior doctors, Mr Hunt said there were about 6,000 deaths a year because of the lack of "a proper seven-day service". But this assertion was later questioned by academics. Emails show one of the author's of the unpublished paper, which Mr Hunt was using to justify the 6,000 figure, was unhappy with how his study was being used. [...] This figure was then used regularly by the government in its argument for changes to doctors' contracts. [ they needed it to justify back-door cutbacks to NHS budget. Same w bursaries! ] &! bbc.in/1hVMGcz

The Deflation Monster Has Arrived | Zero Hedge
the world’s grand experiment with debt has come to an end. And it’s now unraveling. [...] The next thing is to give money to Main Street. [...] Either way, money will be printed out of thin air and given to you. That’s what’s coming next. Possibly after a failed attempt at demanding negative interest rates from the banks. But coming it is. [...] Once people lose faith in their currency all bets are off. The smart people will be those who take their fresh central bank money and spend it before the next guy.

VW: Das Auto?
Volkswagen: The scandal explained - BBC News
&! The city of Wolfsburg in Lower Saxony is not merely the hometown of Volkswagen. Wolfsburg is Volkswagen, Germany's answer to Detroit - but rather more prosperous. [...] Financially the consequences are unlikely to be very pretty. VW has already set aside €6.5bn (£4.7bn) to cover the costs of recalls, and pay for efforts to rebuild the brand. For a company which made a net profit of €10.8bn last year, that is not an insurmountable figure. However, the real total may end up being considerably higher. Even so, the biggest cost may be to Volkswagen's reputation. The company has been caught deceiving not only regulators, but consumers as well. The "clean diesels" it sold in the US have been publicly exposed as nothing of the sort. So its reputation will have to be rebuilt.- bbc.in/1LACT8f &! bit.ly/1Fx5YjQ - nationale haeme &! bit.ly/1OW4cLp - Made in Germany not in danger! //&! new lobby details in Brussels - bit.ly/1MLPyGX

Don’t Be Apple | TechCrunch
[ pendulums swing ] Put another way, Apple may be more benevolent than Amazon, Facebook, Google, or Microsoft — but it is also more dictatorial than any of those. Benevolent dictators are wonderful until suddenly they aren’t. You may trust Apple not to abuse the power it wields (and if you think that power is trivial or meaningless, consider just how much of our lives are orchestrated by and through our pocket supercomputers nowadays, and how they could be used against us.) Heck, despite my criticisms, I trust today’s Apple not to abuse that power. But I would vastly prefer that they didn’t have it at all — or that they at least gave users the option to sever the tether to Cupertino. “Trust, but verify,” as Ronald Reagan once said. [...] It may seem silly to criticize a fantastic company that makes superb products and delights its users on the basis of an abstract philosophical dispute. ...

Solving the productivity puzzle - BBC News
UK productivity growth (as measured by output per hour worked) has been exceptionally weak since 2008. Productivity growth has actually been weak across the developed economies since the Great Recession but especially so in the UK. Beyond those facts though, there is little agreement. The talk is instead of a "productivity puzzle": solving that puzzle is the key to both a lower government deficit and to higher living standards. [...] [I]t could be that the nature of Britain's recovery explains the low productivity growth. Rather than lower productivity leading to lower real wages (as companies cannot afford to increase pay), it may be that lower real wages have encouraged firms to hire workers rather than investing in new equipment. This could have lowered productivity. [...] Much of it feels more traditionally "sociological" than "economic". // 2nd Industrial Revolution - Software is Eating the World, Self-Employment, contractors, Zero Hour Contracts, etc. &! bit.ly/1aRi7Bw

Here’s how reporters are reacting to Snowden’s revelations | PandoDaily
The global surveillance programs revealed by Edward Snowden have caused journalists to change how they operate, question what the government knows about them, and consider abandoning investigative reporting, according to a survey from the Pew Research Center. A significant number of the journalists surveyed said they had changed their behavior, whether it’s how they store sensitive files (49 percent), how they communicate with other journalists (29 percent), whether they’ve reached out to a source (13 percent), or pursued a specific story (2 percent). Many are also convinced the government is gathering information about them. Some 64 percent of journalists believed intelligence agencies had “probably collected data” about them. (The other 36 percent, as “InfoSec Taylor Swift” joked, must not read the news.)

IMF study finds inequality is damaging to economic growth | Business | The Guardian
International Monetary Fund paper dismisses rightwing argument that redistributing incomes is self-defeating. [...] It is 18 months since the IMF published its controversial view that government cuts to public-sector spending were having a larger detrimental effect than previously thought. The paper, written by its chief economist, Olivier Blanchard, was incendiary and sparked denials in London and Brussels where calls for austerity were strongest. [...] In an interview later Ostry said it was his belief that the inclusion of higher welfare payments would only support the argument in favour of redistribution.
