UK productivity lags behind rest of G7 - BBC News
"Since the economic downturn, productivity growth has slowed in most developed economies, but by more in the UK than the average." The Chancellor, George Osborne, pledged in July to take steps to encourage more long-term investment in infrastructure and by businesses to boost productivity. Howard Archer, chief UK economist at IHS Global Insight, said British productivity had been held back since the financial crisis by the creation of lots of low-skilled, low-paid jobs where productivity is limited. However, Institute of Directors chief economist James Sproule said that UK firms should focus on "agility" rather than productivity. "The economy of the future looks set to be dominated not by big companies, but by fast, agile, quick-moving and reactive ones," he said. "The firms that can respond to consumer demands most effectively and bring new products and services to market will reap the rewards."

[...] The changes in young adults' consumption habits have clearly been influenced by economic forces. But economic forces shape societal attitudes, too. I also don't see much sign that these economic forces are about to reverse. Both these things can be true: The median 25-to-34-year-old has less to spend, and is less interested in spending it on a car.

People are underestimating Snapchat just like they underestimated Facebook - Vox
In fact, almost every one of today's big internet companies — Yahoo, Google, Facebook, and Twitter — faced similar skepticism in their early years. Back in 2007, Kara Swisher (who now runs Re/code which, like Vox.com, is part of Vox Media) expressed astonishment that Facebook could be worth $15 billion. A year before that, a Slate headline read "$1 Billion for Facebook? LOL!" (Facebook is now worth $260 billion.) [....] A company's early ad revenue just doesn't tell us anything interesting about its long-term earnings potential. It takes a while for a company to hire a sales team, settle on an effective advertising format, and build awareness among potential customers. “The data is showing that unless there is a brand pull (and only Apple is in this category), the device game has become a price game,” said wireless industry consultant Chetan Sharma. “This is especially true on the high end. Given that some good devices are available at half the price makes it hard for Samsung, LG, Sony and similar players to be successful with a device on the high end.” One need only look at recent financials from Samsung, HTC and Sony to see the impact that this is already having on both sales and profits. There is another big trend hurting Samsung and others trying to sell premium devices. Until very recently, consumers have been able to snap up even the priciest phones for as little as $200 with a two-year contract. But in a trend started by T-Mobile and increasingly true across the U.S. wireless industry, carriers are no longer subsidizing these devices.

Apple does not fight on Windows nor Google (Android) turf. It created (fact) a new category. Redefined the category of the Gadget, of the Phone. Of the Laptop. Of the Workstation. This (newest phone/better technology) is not just for the Geeks or Nerds. This is a status symbol you are seen with every day (Apple Watch, iPhone, MacBook (2015 version) at the Coffee shop and elsewhere). That person made a deliberate concious or not decision to buy the Apple product at that price. -vs- GNU/Linux or Windows or Android whatever for the same basic utility at a much affordable price. Who ever came up with that should be highlighted in the next Apple Book about Apples chapter post-Jobs.

CBI head calls for GCSEs to be scrapped - BBC News
John Cridland, director general of the employers' group, says England's exam system is narrow and out of date. He proposes a system in which the most important exams would be A-levels, including both academic and vocational subjects, taken at the age of 18. Ministers are pushing for all pupils to take a core group of academic GCSEs. [...] He says that for too long "we've just pretended" to have an exam system that values vocational education, when in practice, exams have operated as stepping stones towards a university degree. [...] "GCSEs are past their sell-by date and should be retired." He says that the only purpose they serve now is to allow measurement of schools through league tables. The proposal to scrap GCSEs comes as ministers are pushing for an even greater emphasis on academic GCSEs, with plans for all pupils to have to take core academic subjects. This announcement "misses the point that we need curriculum reform, not just exam reform", says the CBI chief.

Bei einem Umsatz von 1,3 Milliarden Dollar machte Spotify im vergangenen Jahr 197 Millionen Euro Verlust. Mit dem Geldverdienen klappt es also nicht einmal beim Marktführer so richtig. Und trotzdem wird das schwedische Unternehmen mit acht Milliarden Dollar bewertet. Für Apple aber ist es viel einfacher: Der kalifornische Konzern muss mit seinem Angebot gar kein Geld verdienen. Der iTunes Store und der App Store dienen in erster Linie dazu, Kunden an Apples Plattformen zu binden und damit den Verkauf der viel profitableren Apple-Hardware anzukurbeln. Research from the Institute for Policy Studies found that in 2014, bonuses paid to Wall Street employees had been double the total annual pay earned by all Americans who worked full-time at the federal minimum wage. I crunched the numbers and it turned out that the same was true for the UK. [...] The Office for National Statistics (ONS) had figures out on Wednesday based on the definition that people were in poverty if their income was below 60% of the median level (to find the median income, line up all the people in the country in order of income and take the middle one). It found that almost a third of the UK population had experienced poverty in at least one of the years between 2010 and 2013, which is very high by European standards. The OECD sets out a summary of what has happened to examples of all three of these measures. Across its 34 member countries, the Gini Coefficient rose gradually from 1996, fell slightly for the financial crisis and then resumed its upward path.

I talked to maybe 20 randomly hailed UberX and Lyft drivers between November and March. All but one were male immigrants, primarily from Africa, South Asia and the Middle East, and most spoke heavily accented English. It's a completely different group from the drivers I'm able to get in touch with through Uberpeople.net, the demographics of which I'd call "Reddit-ish." All the immigrant drivers who spoke to me took a lot of pride in providing excellent service. Few had been Uber drivers for more than a month or two. Many were helping support multiple family members, most had at least one other job and all worked hours that would reduce me to a weeping wreck in a month. [F]or now it seems to have renewed its focus on its set-top box, which will reportedly receive a pretty substantial upgrade at Apple’s WWDC in June. It makes more sense for Apple to create something that plugs into consumers’ existing television sets than it does for the company to release a television set that will have to compete with “good enough” and premium products alike. Apple doesn’t enter commoditized markets. It allows other companies to fumble with new product categories — smartphones, tablets, smartwatches — and then releases a product of its own when it believes the timing is right. Are those categories eventually commoditized? Yep. There are good phones that cost less than $300 without a contract. Tablets are getting cheaper and cheaper. So too does venture capital itself, a meta-tournament of picking winners, in which enough money is (hopefully) made from the few big hits to outweigh the inevitable failures– –and so too will we all, soon enough. I’ve argued before that, because software is eating the world, “technology is slowly dragging us all, economically, away from Mediocristan and into Extremistan.” The power of software is such that it gives ever-smaller numbers of people ever-greater leverage. Meanwhile, much of yesterday’s rote Mediocristan work can and will be automated tomorrow. As a result, our economies are moving (slowly, in fits and starts) to a power-law Extremistan future. Others consider it a potential disaster, knitting together two companies saddled with backward-looking assets and a questionable recipe for future growth. That is, outside of acquisitions, which Mayer has employed heavily in the past two years of her leadership, frantically buying up a range of small mobile-focused startups to try to inject more innovation, talent and product savvy into the long-moribund Yahoo. While the effort is laudable in principle, investors seem unimpressed with her purchases, and, at this point at least, they have yielded no concrete bottom-line improvements to Yahoo’s much-flagging core business.
