Food Standards Scotland chief says NHS at 'tipping point' amid obesity crisis | HeraldScotland
However, the head of Scotland's food watchdog said he believed there was a growing consensus in public and political opinion that a "tipping point" was being reached in the battle against obesity, and that a failure to reverse the crisis would eventually "cripple the NHS". The number of people living in Scotland with Type 2 diabetes has increased by 29 per cent since 2010, to more than 289,000, according to figures published today.

In search of surrogates, foreign couples descend on Ukraine - BBC News
Foreign couples have been coming to this corner of Europe in droves since 2015, when surrogacy hotspots in Asia began closing their industries one-by-one, amid reports of exploitation. Barred from India, Nepal and Thailand, they turned to Ukraine, one of the few places left where surrogacy can still be arranged at a fraction of what it costs in the US.

"We have so many childless couples coming to our country - it's like a conveyor belt," says Ana, who asked for her identity to be protected.

When she was 21, and after some years of hotel work, Ana finally decided to become a surrogate. By then she had a daughter and realised she was eligible. Under Ukrainian law, a surrogate must have a child of their own before carrying someone else's. If you have your own child, you are less likely to become attached to the one you must give away, those who recruit the women say. [...] Europe's capital of surrogacy
Demand for surrogacy in Ukraine "has increased probably 1000% in the last two years alone," says Sam Everingham of Families Through Surrogacy, a Sydney-based charity that advises would-be parents.

The country, he adds, "has found itself almost accidentally as one of the handful of nation states" which allow surrogacy tourism.

Prostate cancer deaths overtake those from breast cancer - BBC News
The number of men dying from prostate cancer has overtaken female deaths from breast cancer for the first time in the UK, figures show. An ageing population means more men are developing and dying from the disease. Funding the NHS: Is it finally time for a new approach? - BBC News
A ring-fenced tax for health and social care has been resisted in the past by the Treasury. Such a policy is known by economists as hypothecation. Opponents, including Treasury mandarins, believe it ties the hands of chancellors.

But, intriguingly, a former top civil servant at the Treasury, Sir Nick Macpherson, has come out in favour of a ring-fenced tax which is renewed every five years.

Finance trumps patients at every level – UK healthcare needs an inquiry | Aseem Malhotra | Healthcare Professionals Network | The Guardian
tl;dr Diet & Lifestyle changes of the nation in the short-, medium- and long-term term can help (substantially) save the NHS. // A full public inquiry on the scale of Chilcot into the Iraq war may ultimately be required to overhaul a system where at every level financial interest continues to trump what’s best for patients – not only to improve the quality of care, but to restore trust in medical research. Until then, NHS England, the BMA and the Department of Health must make it a national priority to emphasise to patients that less medicine and healthier lifestyles are the most important solutions to sustaining the NHS. // statistics use in medical research and patient selection and reporting issue. absolute risk v % of all patients. // Such statistical and health illiteracy, far from being the exception, is actually the norm. The majority of healthcare professionals seem unable to understand medical literature. Global cost of obesity-related illness to hit $1.2tn a year from 2025 | Society | The Guardian
The cost of treating ill health caused by obesity around the world will top $1.2tn every year from 2025 unless more is done to check the rapidly worsening epidemic, according to new expert estimates. At last, we seem to be awakening from the bad dream of “tick-box medicine”
Doctors allowed themselves to be reduced to automatons. [...] NICE has recently changed the rubric that prefaces its guidelines, stressing that they are not mandatory and that they must be tailored to each individual patient. This would once simply have been good practice. That it has become necessary for NICE to spell it out shows just how far the profession has been degraded by the tick-box culture. [...] reduced to automatons, and their patients to pill-swallowing machines.

Chronic ill health among working age population poses 'unsustainable drain' on NHS | HeraldScotland
Currently 39 per cent of the working age population in Scotland has at least one long-term condition, but that is forecast to surge as the population ages and Scotland grapples with the fallout of an obesity epidemic.

Prof MacDonald said a failure to prevent and manage long-term conditions properly would be catastrophic as pension age increases to 68 or more.

Get up, stand up: including exercise in everyday life healthier than gym, says study | Society | The Guardian

Snacks, fags and booze: Scotland's triple health challenge | Holyrood Magazine
Obesity is linked to 13 types of cancer, as well as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and strokes, with obesity-related illnesses costing Scotland approximately £4.6bn. The annual cost of type 2 diabetes alone to NHS Scotland is £800m.

Obesity is now the second biggest risk factor for cancer after smoking and Cancer Research UK has warned that Scotland is in the grip of an obesity epidemic, with Scots consuming 110 tonnes of sugar a day, fuelled by promotions on unhealthy foods. [...] experts have concluded that only a change in diet can tackle Scotland’s weight problems. Analysis: a year in health - supply and demand | Holyrood Magazine
stop increasing general taxation. increase tax on causes. Verursacherprinzip. // Calls for a similarly tough approach on obesity have not yet been rewarded with a strategy, despite one being due last year and Scotland’s obesity rates amongst the highest in the world, even higher than in the rest of the UK.

Could the protracted legal wrangling with the drinks industry have tempered the Scottish Government’s appetite for imposing tough restrictions on food manufacturers and supermarkets? It will be clearer when the obesity and diet strategy emerges in the winter. [...] One long-awaited strategy which did see the light of day was the new mental health strategy, launched by Maureen Watt in March, but the minister may well have been disappointed in the response.

The document “lacks the ambition and investment that Scotland deserves” said the Scottish Association for Mental Health’s chief executive, Billy Watson.

The question, as with the rest of NHS Scotland’s challenges, is how would it be paid for?

NHS waiting times 'driving people to turn to private treatment' | Society | The Guardian
Growing numbers of patients are paying for private treatment to beat rationing and delays for treatment imposed by the cash-strapped NHS.

People who do not have health insurance are increasingly paying up to £14,880 for operations such as a hip or knee replacement or cataract removal, a report reveals.

Profit-driven hospital firms are experiencing 15 to 25% year-on-year rises in the number of uninsured “self-payers”, with the increase mainly driven by long waiting times to undergo non-urgent surgery in NHS hospitals. Patients are using their savings or taking out loans to pay for their treatment. [...] There has also been a rise in those paying for private cancer care in the wake of NHS England cutting the number of drugs it pays for under the Cancer Drugs Fund. “Widely publicised restrictions on NHS funding for cancer drugs is fuelling the growth in self-pay oncology,” notes the report, titled The Private Healthcare UK Self-Pay Market 2017. & https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/sep/11/the-guardian-view-on-the-nhs-crisis-private-treatment-is-not-the-answer

Free IVF no longer offered in county where it all began - BBC News
The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough area has become the third place in the UK to withdraw free IVF treatment.
Government guidelines recommend that women under 40 should be offered three free cycles if they have been trying to conceive for three years.
The local clinical commissioning group (CCG) said the decision would save the county £700,000 a year.
It comes after a 20-week public consultation - and will stop with immediate effect. The decision will be reviewed next in April 2019.

Type 2 diabetes rise in children 'disturbing' - BBC News
More than 600 children and teenagers are being treated for type 2 diabetes in England and Wales, and the rise in cases is a "hugely disturbing trend", local councils are warning.
The figures come from a report by child health experts which found 110 more cases among under-19s in 2015-16 than two years previously.
The youngest children affected are aged between five and nine.
Council leaders said urgent action on childhood obesity was needed.
The Local Government Association, which represents councils in England and Wales, added that government cuts to public health budgets had affected their ability to tackle the issue.

Britain’s young suffer as austerity continues to take its toll | Letters | Business | The Guardian
It is governmental negligence when the poorest young citizens do not have enough money to heat a home or buy a healthy balanced diet. Universities report time and time again that cold homes increase rates of respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease, excess winter deaths and mental illness. Inadequate diets increase the risk of malnutrition, obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Debt with insufficient income impacts on health indirectly through increased stress, depression and anxiety, and suboptimal coping behaviours – such as increased rates of smoking and drinking.

After the crash in 2008, the Queen asked: “Why did no one see it coming?” Ten years later, she might well ask the same question about the rise of early deaths among young people.
