New leadership, same old problems - BBC News
new money won't be seen till next year, new winter crisis is coming for sure, and the wait lists will get even longer. - Health think tanks argue that the 3.4% is really only enough to cope with rising demand, never mind improving care.

Hospital sources point out that the new money won't come to the NHS until next year.

Nothing extra so far has been allocated for this winter and the intense pressure seen in the first months of this year is likely to be repeated.

There is every chance that waiting lists for routine surgery will get longer and accident and emergency performance won't get better.

Even with the £6bn cash boost next year, there are warnings that there won't be any rapid improvement. His instincts will be to tell the service to get on with job with the money it has. But that conviction will be tested in the depths of winter if hospitals are struggling to cope. Theresa May faces dilemma over NHS cash boost, says IFS | Business | The Guardian
PM will have to either raise taxes, slash public spending or break her own spending rules - “The government is in a bind,” the IFS said. “It is extremely doubtful that large additional cuts to spending on other public services are either feasible politically or consistent with maintaining quality.

“So unless it is able and willing to implement tax rises or further cuts to the social security budget over the rest of this parliament it is hard to see how a significant injection of additional cash into the NHS would be consistent with the government’s stated fiscal objective.”

Bev Humphrey: ‘The underfunding of the NHS is almost conspiratorial’ | Society | The Guardian
Humphrey believes the health service is now close to breaking point and that government policy is to blame. “The chronic underfunding of the NHS is almost conspiratorial,” she says. “The way it has been starved of money for the last seven years is scandalous. We haven’t got to this decade to find everyone is suddenly iller. I fear the government will turn around in a few years and say, ‘Look, we have given you money and it hasn’t worked – we need a new system.’ I am concerned this would lead to a compulsory insurance model.” It would create a two-tier system, she feels. “The NHS is not only a very efficient service, it’s also clinically excellent. If we move away from that [a service that is free at the point of need] there’s no going back. What you would end up with is very poor quality services for the poorest and those who need it most.”

Charities call for action over cancer waiting times - BBC News
Cancer charities have called for urgent action to reduce the length of time patients are having to wait for key diagnostic tests.

Nearly 16,000 people were waiting longer than the target six weeks for procedures such as CT scans, MRI scans and ultrasounds in December.

The Daily Mail says strict rationing rules being used by three quarters of NHS hospitals means patients in need of a replacement knee or hip must have to use a walking stick or wheelchair before they will be considered for surgery.

The paper says patients can be rejected for surgery unless they are judged to be in distress for most of the day, unable to sleep, or continually taking painkillers.

It adds that patients who are told they can't have an operation are advised to install hand rails at home, perform stretches or buy special shoes.

As shown by the paradise papers, many PFI contracts are held in offshore trusts. So we are all being doubly ripped off, tied into open-ended blank chequebooks, with extortionate amounts being paid by near-bankrupt health authorities to companies that pay no UK tax. The health authorities are unable to employ locum staff to support the unfortunates working on the wards, meaning everyone is overstretched. No wonder austerity has likely resulted in 45,000 extra deaths in the NHS since austerity was introduced in 2010, as the BMJ Open study estimates.

Finance trumps patients at every level – UK healthcare needs an inquiry | Aseem Malhotra | Healthcare Professionals Network | The Guardian
tl;dr Diet & Lifestyle changes of the nation in the short-, medium- and long-term term can help (substantially) save the NHS. // A full public inquiry on the scale of Chilcot into the Iraq war may ultimately be required to overhaul a system where at every level financial interest continues to trump what’s best for patients – not only to improve the quality of care, but to restore trust in medical research. Until then, NHS England, the BMA and the Department of Health must make it a national priority to emphasise to patients that less medicine and healthier lifestyles are the most important solutions to sustaining the NHS. // statistics use in medical research and patient selection and reporting issue. absolute risk v % of all patients. // Such statistical and health illiteracy, far from being the exception, is actually the norm. The majority of healthcare professionals seem unable to understand medical literature. One study revealed 70% of those on a training programme failed a simple test on their understanding of evidence-based medicine.

NHS faces even worse winter crisis than last year, watchdog warns | Society | The Guardian
In an update on how the NHS in England performed between July and September, NHSI said hospitals did not succeed in freeing up the target of 2,000-3,000 beds by September, which would have helped them cope with the extra winter demand.

NHS leaders and the health secretary, Jeremy Hunt, told hospitals in the spring that they needed to reduce the number of beds occupied due to “delayed transfers of care” – patients who are fit to leave but cannot safely be discharged – to 3.5% of their total number by September. But 5% of beds are still occupied with such cases, NHSI said.

'Bed-blocking' in Scottish hospitals falls by 9.6% - BBC News
About 400 people were left in hospital because the social care support they needed in order to live in their own home was not available, while more than 200 had to wait for a place in a nursing home.
Of those who could not leave hospital in September 2017, 1,140 had to wait for for more than three days.
A third of delayed patients had to wait in hospital for more than six weeks - a 2% increase from last year, despite the fall in the figures overall.

NHS staff 'working on edge of safety' - BBC News
NHS staff in England are working on the "edge of safety" as rising demand is outstripping the increasing numbers being employed, health bosses say.
There are now 6% more staff than there were three years ago, but demand for services has risen by three times as much in some areas.
NHS Providers, which represents health chiefs, said staff shortages was now the number one concern in the NHS.

NHS Scotland plots urgent measures to support practices at 'tipping point' | News Article | Pulse Today
Dr McDevitt had earlier told delegates that ‘you’re not going to vote for this contract because it becomes with a pay rise’.

Among the detail announced so far includes a wider healthcare team taking over some jobs traditionally done by the GP, including some chronic disease management, routine checks, and drug monitoring.

GPs will have access to NHS-run services including prescribing and treatment room services to reduce their workload.

'Radical changes' needed to £1bn stroke care - BBC News
[ 50% of disability in over 50 from Stroke ] Caring for people who have suffered from stroke is costing Wales £1bn annually, according to a leading charity.
The Stroke Association has also warned the figure could almost triple to £2.8bn by 2035 if immediate action is not taken.
The charity said the "vast majority" of the financial burden is placed on families and carers.
Strokes cost the UK as a whole £25.6bn per year.

Patients are suffering while the SNP shamefully dithers | Kevin McKenna | Opinion | The Guardian
One senior health professional told me last week: “Yes, there is a backlog for operations, but the issue is the front and back door – not the bit in the middle. They are trying to solve the wrong problem and bringing on these new centres will only add to the problem. In addition, there is a huge problem with a lack of doctors across parts of the system. If they are moving planned care into these new elective centres, how are they going to staff them?”

NHS failing to tackle 'significant safety risks', warns its medical chief
Patients were being left at risk of suffering needless harm – including amputations, devastating maternity complications and deaths – because of the lack of action to protect them, the former heart surgeon said.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Sir Bruce said there were too many organisations vying for attention and instead, one simple system was needed to issue safety directives.

He also said too many hospitals were putting cost-cutting ahead of patient safety.

Thanks but no thanks, CareRooms. In the NHS we need staff, not beds | Rachel Clarke | Opinion | The Guardian
Trained staff – carers – are what the sector lacks, not physical spaces in buildings. Urgent investment in trained, regulated carers is the only safe way to address this, not outsourcing the problem to random homeowners with no clearly defined standards for safeguarding, clinical governance and infection control, not to mention other risks to patients who are at their most vulnerable.
