Legal highs 'may be linked' to rise in HIV in Glasgow area
For the first time in almost 30 years, new diagnoses of HIV related to drug injecting was at a comparable level among gay and heterosexual men.
Investigations into the outbreak highlighted that some drug users were sharing needles, syringes, spoons and water when preparing and injecting their drugs.
It has also highlighted that there is low awareness of the risks of HIV from doing so. [...] Dr Catriona Milosevic, consultant in public health medicine at NHSGGC, said it was "vitally important" that people who inject drugs do not share or reuse equipment.

Tory MP Crispin Blunt: 'I out myself as poppers user' | Politics | The Guardian
“I use poppers. I out myself as a poppers user. And would be directly affected by this legislation. And I was astonished to find that it’s proposed they be banned and, frankly, so were very many gay men.” Poppers are especially popular among gay men, and used to prepare for sex and enhance sexual pleasure. The proposed laws would criminalise the sale of the drug, but not those who buy it.

Kenny MacAskill calls for drug policy rethink - BBC News
A former Scottish justice secretary has suggested that he would be in favour of decriminalising some illegal drugs. #EveryLineCounts campaign: Cocaine users urged to consider impact - BBC News
A UK campaign to highlight the harm caused by the production and distribution of cocaine is being launched by the National Crime Agency. [...] "When they use cocaine, aside from putting their own lives at risk, they are feeding an industry which routinely uses death, violence and destruction in its production process. "Buying cocaine funds the exploitation of impoverished people, destroys and pollutes large areas of rainforest, forces people from their homes so coca can be grown on their land, and results in the murder of police officers and others who stand in the way of powerful crime groups. "We are asking people to weigh up the facts and ask themselves whether they can square their use of this drug with the damage it does to others."

BBC Radio 4 - Today, 17/11/2015, Why are there AK47s in Europe?
legalisation process in western world under way (Canada) because war on drugs is a failure as much as the war on terror. // British journalist and author Misha Glenny told the Today programme that during the Balkan war of the 1990s, networks emerged dealing drugs and guns out of the Balkan countries and into the European Union. After the war, these networks remained, with an estimated four to five million semi-automatic weapons in circulation. There is a “symbiotic relationship” between terrorists and organised crime, he told presenter Mishal Husain.

Marijuana legalization initiative fails in Ohio - Business Insider
Issue 3 would create a marijuana "monopoly" (actually, an oligopoly) consisting of 10 producers who would have their exclusive rights to engage in the commercial production of marijuana enshrined in the state constitution. The campaign in support of Issue 3 — so-called Responsible Ohio — is predictably supported by those who would hold these exclusive rights. This is crony capitalism at its worst. // same w GMO, Monsanto asked whitehouse (bush) to introduce stringent legislation and regulation about GMO research bc monanto knew it was ahead and didn't want any newcomers in, thus made through legislation, regulation and compliance cost, the barriers to entry artificially high, through its effective strong lobbying to introduce legislation & regulation to its liking.

addictive: sugar+fat mix, alcohol, tobacco, ... [...] criminalising doesn't work (deviant behaviour = Religious), have to allow it supervised (clean drugs, not stretched nor other toxic ingredients) & educate & regulate. based on the scientific evidence it is the best choice for governments pockets (less cost for police and law enforcement, as well new consumer tax source and business tax source, and local gov/councils; paying for license to sell and grow/make, oversight and regular check-ups like food safety and hygiene laws). [...] drugs are an excellent way to vilify and marginalise certain kinds of people. see relative new legal high; media manufactured consent. they are dangerous bc nobody knows what they are & what is in then & there are no clinical trials ie for establishing safety limits! as gov also established safety recommendations for alcohol bit.ly/1uNuvry [...] gov does what voters want them to do (ie both Clinton's against gay marriage) // full episode - bit.ly/1NrcZSQ

BBC News - Numbers of the year 2014
This is the amount that the UK's Office for National Statistics (ONS) estimated that prostitution contributed to the economy in 2012, following a decision by the EU that prostitution and illegal drugs should be counted as part of a country's Gross Domestic Product. The ONS estimates that: about 61,000 people work in prostitution in the UK the average cost per visit is about £67 each prostitute sees about 23 clients per week, working 52 weeks a year - in total about 1,200. Multiply those figures up and you get £5.7bn (which is $8.9bn, or 7.3bn euros).
