The left should just admit it: victims aren’t always good people | Deborah Orr | Opinion | The Guardian
[ see alain de botton analysis in one of the many videos, babies are a blank canvas, what happesn to them is a collective decision process, the environment in front of their eyes and as far back as westminster ] Human beings, despite the witless homilies of humanism, don’t all start out good and kind and perfect, only to have it driven out of them by a cruel world. Cherished children sometimes grow up to be antisocial, gazing with dead-eyed contempt at the people whose love they exploit. There can be no human utopia, because there will always be humans in it.

"women have to show sexiness (attractiveness) to signal fertility. [...] subconscious natural selection." // industry worker "a treat, feeling good that rather looking good." // art, and can look like a different person // study showed that people prefer no-make-up make-up look. // advertising and marketing is positioning and spin it that it is seen in a feminist way along the way of 'you made the decision, you made yourself look better, ...' rarely do we judge men by their look ... ie rob ford toronto mayor, or chris christie. // Selfie has become a culture/pop culture phenomenon. bare face selfie is seen now as courageous! #trend - bare face is so alien to our make-up (look your best) norm/cultural norm! // putting on make-up and nice outfit (shopping, treat) can become coping mechanism against stress.

Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg to give away 99% of shares - BBC News
No longer should billionaires wait to die before handing over money to a different generation, Buffet said, in a gushing approval of Silicon Valley's newest and most influential power couple. Everything Mark Zuckerberg does is eyed with intense scrutiny, not least due to the nature of Facebook's business of making money from personal data. But while the 31-year-old's previous charitable efforts have been criticised for being too focused on building Facebook's user base, this latest pledge appears to leave the Facebook business to one side. // vs The best way to do good in the world is not to be a philanthropist. Every Day I Want To Quit Social Media
[ no more time to reflect and think for yourself ... we are all and feel Alon Together. ] I am drowning in a sea of anxiety created by Twitter and Facebook. [...] We all want to be recognized as clever or witty. [ your best side, public ] [...] I ended up on social media for a reason, and though the reason escapes me during moments of sheer panic and anxiety, I take part, no matter what — the pursuit of relevancy, or, in the strictest sense of the term, validation, is an imperative that exists as a key part of humankind’s quest for meaning. Self-definition has become intertwined with social media. We are all here for each other. I wake up staring at my phone. I fall asleep to the glow of the very same screen.

Rezension ǀ Was wäre ein selbstbestimmtes Leben?
Digitaler Burnout: "Zu viel Smartphone macht unglücklich" - SPIEGEL ONLINE
[ portion USE time! 3x1hr?

The more you pursue happiness, the faster it runs from you | Zach Stafford | Comment is free | The Guardian
Psychologist Iris Mauss at the University of California, Berkley found that the pursuit of happiness might just leave you worse off. “Wanting to be happy can make you less happy,” said Mauss in an interview with livescience.com. “If you explicitly and purposely focus on happiness, that appears to have a self-defeating quality.” [...] In her studies, participants who were not happy would begin blaming themselves for feeling sad. They thought it was an immediate flag for their failure, making these negative feelings even more counter-productive. The people who accepted these negative feelings as normal, however, were much happier in the long run. So, accepting your sadness could actually make you feel good. [...] For Darwin, emotions were very much tied to surviving, which requires more than just happiness. [...] Be open about how you’re feeling, don’t try to hide behind it or conceal it. // &! keeping a diary talking to and about yourself compassionately.

The pursuit of happiness: what is happiness, and how can we make ourselves happier?
Since the days of Aristotle, happiness was thought to have at least two aspects: hedonia (pleasure) and eudaimonia (a life well lived). In contemporary psychology, happiness is referred to as simply pleasure and meaning. Positive psychologists such as Dr Martin Seligman have recently added one more distinct component to the definition of happiness: engagement. Engagement refers to living a “good life” of work, family friends and hobbies. // see also David Brooks book on Character, living life for your eulogy.

Tour de France: Zerstörerische Kraft - Sport Nachrichten - NZZ.ch

eBay Shrugged: Pierre Omidyar believes there should be no philanthropy without profit | PandoDaily
Pierre Omidyar. The role of Omidyar Network in so many major events of the past week — helping elect India’s ultranationalist leader Narendra Modi; co-funding Ukraine regime-change NGOs with USAID, resulting in a deadly civil war and Monday’s election of Ukrainian billionaire oligarch Petro Poroshenko; and now, this week’s first-ever sit-down TV interview with Edward Snowden, through an arrangement between NBC News and Pierre Omidyar’s First Look Media — shows how these contradictions are coming to the fore, and shaping our world.
[...] + http://www.samharris.org/lying

Radsport : Ullrich und Zabel stehen auf Epo-Dopingliste - Nachrichten Sport - DIE WELT
+ http://inrng.com/2013/07/the-french-senate-test/#more-16319 >> Next, this isn’t an anti-doping event. Despite Pat McQuaid’s confused statements over Marco Pantani, the UCI cannot look into the matter because WADA’s eight year statute of limitations has passed and even if that rule didn’t exist, these samples tested for EPO don’t have the customary seals and A+B samples. There’s no doubt that EPO use can demonstrated here but not to the standard to achieve a doping conviction. [...] But all the same when the report is out tomorrow, count the number of pages related to the 1998 Tour de France and divide this by the total number of pages in the report. Armed with this percentage, see what proportion of airtime and column inches get dedicated to cleaning up sport compared to reviving the past. It’s a small test to see whether we’re interested in fixing things or not. + http://www.spiegel.de/sport/sonst/ullrich-und-zabel-auf-der-liste-der-dopingsuender-der-tour-1998-a-912919.html

Can we Trust the Peloton? | Biking Fitness Plans and Advice | OutsideOnline.com
Overall, the data suggests that the performances on AX3 fell within a range that could be expected for a relatively clean peloton with the exception of Froome. His performance on AX3 is clearly flagged as an outlier and warrants healthy rationale skepticism. Going forward, the progression of his performance should be closely followed over the rest of the Tour.

Cycling must be whiter than white to avoid yellow stain of suspicion | Sean Ingle | Sport | The Guardian
VO2max of 88ml/kg/min [...] But scientists are forced to play guessing games because teams guard their race data so closely. According to Team Sky's manager, Sir Dave Brailsford, this is because there are "very few people who can properly interpret and understand it. All you're going to do is create a lot of noise for people who are pseudo-scientists." That may be true. But you can understand how those who could put the numbers into context might find his remarks patronising. And the noise he mentions may yet grow into a deeper howl – especially given the recent comments of Tim Kerrison, the head of performance at Team Sky, that "riders, before too long, will surpass performances in the doping era". [Olympic Record in Athletics when Doping was rampant - are still out of reach.]
