Painkillers in pregnancy may affect babies' future fertility - BBC News
Edinburgh University found the drugs may also affect the fertility of future generations, by leaving marks on DNA.

Experts said the findings added to growing evidence some medicines, including Paracetamol, should be used with caution during pregnancy.

Researchers stressed advice for pregnant women remained unchanged.

Current guidelines say, if necessary, Paracetamol should be used at the lowest possible dose for the shortest possible time. Ibuprofen should be avoided during pregnancy.

The study looked at the effects of Paracetamol and ibuprofen on samples of human foetal testes and ovaries.

Finance trumps patients at every level – UK healthcare needs an inquiry | Aseem Malhotra | Healthcare Professionals Network | The Guardian
tl;dr Diet & Lifestyle changes of the nation in the short-, medium- and long-term term can help (substantially) save the NHS. // A full public inquiry on the scale of Chilcot into the Iraq war may ultimately be required to overhaul a system where at every level financial interest continues to trump what’s best for patients – not only to improve the quality of care, but to restore trust in medical research. Until then, NHS England, the BMA and the Department of Health must make it a national priority to emphasise to patients that less medicine and healthier lifestyles are the most important solutions to sustaining the NHS. // statistics use in medical research and patient selection and reporting issue. absolute risk v % of all patients. // Such statistical and health illiteracy, far from being the exception, is actually the norm. The majority of healthcare professionals seem unable to understand medical literature. One study revealed 70% of those on a training programme failed a simple test on their understanding of evidence-based medicine.

Israeli spies 'watched Russian agents breach Kaspersky software' - BBC News
Israeli spies looked on as Russian hackers breached Kaspersky cyber-security software two years ago, US media report.
The Russians were allegedly attempting to gather data on US intelligence programs, according to the New York Times and Washington Post.
Israeli agents made the discovery after breaching the software themselves.
Kaspersky has said it was neither involved in nor aware of the situation and denies collusion with authorities.
Last month, the US government decided to stop using the Russian firm's software on its computers.
The Israelis are said to have notified the US, which led to the ban on Kaspersky programs.

Hurricanes: A perfect storm of chance and climate change? - BBC News
Those who have been sceptical of the impact of carbon emissions from human sources on the climate have crowed about the fact that it has been 12 years since a hurricane rated category three or above has made landfall in the US.
But those working in the field believe that measuring the connection between hurricanes and climate change based on the number that make land is hugely mistaken. [...] Rising temperatures lead to warmer air holding more moisture, which causes more intense downpours in a hurricane. The oceans have risen thanks to thermal expansion and glacier melt and this works to increase the dangers posed by storm surges.

UK growth forecast upgraded amid warning over inflation | Business | The Guardian
NIESR said it remained convinced that the economy would slow this year as higher inflation reduced consumer spending power. “We expect the composition of growth to rebalance towards net trade, as the headwinds facing households from the erosion of their real incomes weigh on consumer spending while the depreciation of sterling supports net trade,” said Simon Kirby, NIESR’s head of macroeconomic forecasting. Here's Why All Pension Funds Are Doomed, Doomed, Doomed
Given that both The Economist and The Wall Street Journal have covered the impossibility of pension funds achieving their expected returns, this reality cannot be a surprise to anyone in a leadership role. [...] Here's problem #1 in a nutshell: the average public pension fund still expects to earn an average annual return of 7.69%, year after year, decade after decade.

This is roughly triple the nominal (not adjusted for inflation) yield on a 30-year Treasury bond (about 2.65%). The only way any fund manager can earn 7.7% or more in a low-yield environment is to make extremely high risk bets that consistently pay off. //&! Climate change: Advisers warn of climate change domino effect
In a 2,000-page report, the Climate Change Committee says flooding will destroy bridges - wrecking electricity, gas and IT connections carried on them.
The committee also warns that poor farming means the most fertile soils will be badly degraded by mid-century.
And it says heat-related deaths among the elderly will triple by the 2050s as summer temperatures spiral.
The projections are based on the supposition that governments keep promises made at the Paris climate conference to cut emissions - a pledge that is in doubt.
The committee says if emissions are allowed to spiral, London summer temperatures could hit 48C (118F) in an extreme scenario, although the advisers say they don't expect that to happen.
The report from 80 authors is the most comprehensive yet on the potential impact of climate change on the UK.

Super-gonorrhoea's spread 'causing huge concern'
Doctors have expressed "huge concern" that super-gonorrhoea has spread widely across England and to gay men.
The new superbug prompted a national alert last year when it emerged in Leeds, as one of the main treatments had become useless against it.
Public Health England acknowledges measures to contain the outbreak have been of "limited success".
Doctors fear the sexually transmitted infection, which can cause infertility, could soon become untreatable.
Cases of super-gonorrhoea have now been detected in the West Midlands, London and southern England.
Only 34 cases have been officially confirmed in laboratory testing, >>> but this is likely to be the tip of the iceberg of an infection that can be symptomless. <<< + cuts to public health budget! //&! bit.ly/23PdjDp

Superbugs are on track to kill 10 million people by 2050 if things don’t change—fast
[under reported ] Today, 23,000 Americans die each year from infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Across the world, the estimated annual mortality rate is 700,000. If these trends continue, by 2050, 10 million people globally will die each year, as the potent diseases of previous centuries return to their old force, according to the Review on Antimicrobial Resistance. In 2012, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported an estimated 450,000 new cases of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. The emergence of multiple drug-resistant pneumonia and E. coli bacteria strains are predicted to contribute significantly to increased mortalities due to their ability to spread rapidly through populations.

'Superhero DNA' keeps diseases at bay
Large numbers of studies have tried to understand these mutations by looking at people who become ill.
But the international team of researchers tried the opposite approach - searching for people harbouring damaging mutations but who remain healthy. [...] "Study the healthy, don't just study the sick."
However, this is where the tantalising story ends. The scientists were unable to go out and find the lucky 13 because of the consent rules signed when their DNA sample was taken.
It means they do not know what is protecting them against disease. [...] "Because of the inability to confirm the source or validity of the variants and the inability to recontact the individuals, this paper does not constitute a proof of principle," [ means they have to do a large-scale study especially for this kind of research ]

Poultry industry to oversee chicken-farming standards as ministers move to create industry-led deregulation. Conservative ministers are planning to repeal an array of official guidance on animal welfare standards, starting with a move to put the code on chicken-farming into the hands of the poultry industry.

Plastic bottle litter on beaches up 43%, conservationists say
Conservationists say they found 160 plastic bottles for every mile of UK coastline cleaned last year.
The Marine Conservation Society said more than 8,000 bottles were picked up during its Great British Beach Clean Up in September, up 43% on 2014.
It wants deposit return schemes, which give money back to people who return empty bottles, to encourage recycling.
More than 6,000 volunteers collected and recorded litter along 340 beaches across the UK.
The MCS said putting a charge on the bottles of up to 20p, which gets refunded when they are returned, would change behaviour, and called for the UK government to explore the potential of such a scheme.

Rate of carbon emissions put in context
We are now putting carbon into the atmosphere at a rate unprecedented since at least the age of the dinosaurs, scientists say.
The researchers have examined ocean sediments laid down during the so-called Palaeocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum - a dramatic warming event some 56 million years ago.
They find the amount of CO2 going into the air at its onset was four billion tonnes a year at most.
Today's figure is 10 times as big. [...] But the team argues that the scale of human-produced carbon emissions means that the lessons we could learn from the ancient event may actually have limited relevance.
"We have effectively entered an era of a no-analogue state, which represents a fundamental challenge to constraining future climate projections," they write in their paper. [...] "The rate of change is as important as the magnitude of an event for determining particularly terrestrial ecosystem disruptions," &! bit.ly/1Uyfrgz

Obesity bigger cost for Britain than war and terror | Society | The Guardian
Britain spending £47bn a year dealing with the healthcare and social costs of an increasingly overweight population, study finds. Obesity is a greater burden on the UK’s economy than armed violence, war and terrorism, costing the country nearly £47bn a year, a report has found. The study, commissioned by consultancy firm McKinsey and Company, reveals obesity has the second-largest economic impact on the UK behind smoking, generating an annual loss equivalent to 3% of GDP. [...] It has called for a co-ordinated response from governments, retailers, restaurants and food and drink manufacturers to address what it calls the “global obesity crisis”. A series of 44 interventions could bring 20% of overweight or obese people in UK back to normal weight within five to 10 years, the report says. This would save around £16bn a year in the UK, including an annual saving of about £766m in the NHS, according to the study. [...] “Today 25% of the nation is obese and 37% is overweight.
