BBC One - Rip Off Britain, Episode 9: Julia investigates the snags which can come with buying a new build
UK housing crisis. yet another report. due to the unmet demand and buyers willing to compromise. builders are not building properly, high-quality houses and flats. up and down the country! this is no one single incident. first-hand evidence. this is chronic across the industry! using carrier plastic bags for insulation is no mistake by the contractor nor builder. // lesson learned, get an independent surveyor before paying any money! // there are more consumer protection laws and right regarding a tin of beans than a build house. //

Donald Trump, Marine Le Pen: Wie Wirtschaftskrisen Populisten helfen - Kolumne - SPIEGEL ONLINE

More than half of donations to EU referendum campaigns came from just ten wealthy donors | The Independent
In its report Take back Control: How big money undermines trust in politics, the campaign group found that of the £31,834,885 donated to both sides during the referendum, £16, 444, 905 – about 52 per cent – came from just 10 individuals or companies. [...] Leave received £17.5 million of all donations - almost exactly one vote for every pound given towards the Brexit campaign - compared to Remain’s £14.2 million.

Transparency International also found that 95 per cent of all money raised during the referendum campaign came from just 100 donors – a tiny fraction of the millions who voted on June 23.

Brexit may leave holes in UK equality laws · PinkNews
The report comes after former Minister for Women and Equalities Nicky Morgan warned that leaving the EU may cause a ‘legal tangle’ for equality legislation.
She said: “I would think that LGBT rights are so mainstream and respected by the majority of people in this country that that wouldn’t happen.
“But one of the things that hasn’t really been explored is the legal tangle that will result if we were to leave the EU. Some of the anti-discrimination provisions that come from the EU, that we have adopted into UK law… what happens to those?”

Passport checks for patients is an abandonment of NHS principles | Zoe Stewart | Opinion | The Guardian
Dena Bryant, a lifelong resident of Grantham, had her eligibility for care at her local hospital questioned by a nurse who justified her questioning because Bryant was “not white” and did not “look English”.

The reality is that these policies represent yet another instance of the government attempting to blame migrants for the devastating impact of their austerity agenda. [...] The relationship between the doctor or health professional and a patient relies on respect and trust. A policy that demands we verify eligibility and report ineligible patients prioritises money over care, and jeopardises the relationship between a patient and their care provider.

Disability services transform students' lives – we must protect them | Higher Education Network | The Guardian
https://www.theguardian.com/housing-network/2017/apr/07/conservative-government-failing-the-poorest-through-housing-benefit-cuts - As if cuts threatening crucial services in universities aren’t bad enough, the word ‘disability’ is itself now at risk – despite its key role [...] These days I work for disability services within a university. But what we offer is at risk – both from government cuts and changes within higher education.

The government has made £30m of cuts to Disabled Students Allowance since August 2015, which has resulted in the loss of funding for specialist IT equipment and non-medical help such as mentoring, study skills support, note-takers, interpreters and physical assistance. Now, the term “disabled” is also under threat. My manager has had to challenge university directors who want to get rid of the word entirely.

Don’t tell me you weren’t warned about Corbyn | Nick Cohen | Opinion | The Guardian
One senior Labour figure told me he thought Corbyn was endangering British democracy. It depends on the opposition being a government-in-waiting. Labour looks now as if it will never be in government again. The 60% of the population who do not want Conservative rule are faced with Conservative rule without end, with the only pressure for change coming from an ever-more audacious right.

More troubling for you ought to be the question why might May, a prime minister with a fragile majority, not bother to call an early election. One cabinet minister explains her insouciance thus.

Head teachers take school funding anxieties to Twitter - BBC News
Head teachers and their staff have taken to Twitter to highlight what may have to be axed in schools in England because of budget cuts.
There have been more than 27,000 tweets using the hashtag #whatwouldyoucut since the campaign against the cuts started on Sunday.
The government insists school investment is at a record £40bn.
But the Association of School and College Leaders said this was only because pupil numbers are rising.
It argued that head teachers are having to make tough decisions about which services to cut.
The tweets included photographs of science experiments, school trips, sporting activities and performing arts events.

Budget 2017: Hammond to tell us the Brexit vote could have been worse | Business | The Guardian
consumers carried on spending and businesses continued to expand.

The picture for the public finances is also looking rosier compared with Hammond’s maiden autumn statement in November. [...] But here’s what the chancellor will not tell you: living costs have gone up and will continue to do so. The poorest will be hit hardest as the cost of essentials such as food and heating take a growing chunk out of already tight family budgets. Wages will struggle to match rises in inflation and the government’s benefit cuts mean that incomes will fall for the poorest people in Britain. In short, unless the government does something significant to improve living standards this week, inequality will start rising again.

Austerity was a bigger disaster than we thought - The Washington Post
That, at least, is what economists Christopher House and Linda Tesar of the University of Michigan and Christïan Proebsting of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne found when they looked at Europe's budget-cutting experience the last eight years. It turns out that cutting spending right after the worst crisis in 80 years only led to a lower gross domestic product and, in the most extreme cases, higher debt-to-GDP ratios. That's right: trying to reduce debt levels sometimes increased debt burdens. [...] In short, austerity hurt what it was supposed to help, and helped hurt the economy even more than a once-in-three-generations crisis already had.

Brexit has allowed the banks to get off Britain's naughty step | Business | The Guardian
The even better news for the banks is that they are no longer hated. Far from it. Much of the concern about how the UK will survive outside the EU has centred on the future of the City. For years, the banks have been trying to find a way of getting themselves off the public’s naughty step. Brexit has provided them with an opportunity that has been seized with relish. The City has played the post-referendum game masterfully. [...] The recession that the banks caused and the austerity that resulted created the sense of “them and us” – the notion of an unbalanced and unequal Britain – that led to Brexit. [ one particular NHS already breaking EU overtime work directive ] Areas of equality law to be examined include measures to guarantee equal pay, protection for part-time workers and during pregnancy, and combating so-called intersectional discrimination, where someone faces potential disadvantage for not just their gender but another area, for example race or religion. [...] While the government had promised to protect equality and the rights of workers following departure from the EU, Smethers said, the concern was that some protections could be lost almost inadvertently amid wider changes. [...] “The real worry we’ve got is that those kind of assurances are actually quite superficial, and they are probably a second order commitment compared to the need to secure a competitive economy, and how we compete if we’re outside the trading bloc,” Smethers said. &! Cancer drugs price rise 'costing NHS millions' - BBC News
[ capitalists love competition, but corporatists, not. they love raising profit margin ] The UK researchers said NHS negotiations with drug companies were failing to contain costs, and getting access to cheaper drugs would allow more people to be treated with more modern medicines. [...] Dr Hill said he was surprised to find several companies had consistently raised the prices of cancer treatment.
"We have found that some companies take over the supply of some generic cancer medicines and then raise the price progressively," he said. [...] As a result of the bill, companies found to be raising prices with no clear justification will be referred to the Competition and Markets Authority, and could face fines.

UK branded 'soft touch' as figures reveal just 6 staff police filing for millions of firms (From HeraldScotland)
BRITAIN has been branded a soft touch for gangsters and tax evaders after it emerged just six civil servants are responsible for policing the filings of nearly four million firms. The UK has come under intense scrutiny in recent years amid concerns that London - and its financial and property markets - has become an engine room for global money-laundering. Tax transparency and anti-corruption campaigners increasingly fear that lax controls over the paperwork filed by British firms means criminals can hide in plain sight. &! https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/jan/27/uks-super-rich-appear-to-get-special-deal-from-hmrc-says-watchdog - Commons public accounts committee says failure to crack down on wealthy tax dodgers undermines confidence in system &! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-38764923 - MPs warn HMRC to get tough on tax from footballers and super-rich

Get Ready for the First Shocks of Trump’s Disaster Capitalism
bush on steroids // Shock Doctrine // [taking advantage/exploit self-created crisis and shocks] To get a sense of how the Trump administration will respond to their first crises, it’s worth reading the list in full (and noting Pence’s name right at the bottom).

What stands out in the package of pseudo “relief” policies is the commitment to wage all-out war on labor standards and on the public sphere — which is ironic because the failure of public infrastructure is what turned Katrina into a human catastrophe. Also notable is the determination to use any opportunity to strengthen the hand of the oil and gas industry.

The first three items on the RSC list are “automatically suspend Davis-Bacon prevailing wage laws in disaster areas,” a reference to the law that required federal contractors to pay a living wage; “make the entire affected area a flat-tax free-enterprise zone”; and “make the entire region an economic competitiveness zone (comprehensive tax incentives and waiving of regulations).”

Brexit: Boris Johnson warns against 'punishment beatings' - BBC News
And HSBC announced it was preparing to move 1,000 staff from London to Paris when the UK leaves the EU. [...] Guy Verhofstadt said there was 'no way' the UK could pick and choose aspects of the EU [...] German Chancellor Angela Merkel said: "The be-all and end-all is that Europe does not let itself be divided, and we will ensure that with very intensive contacts.'' EU governments would consult their business sectors, she added, and she was "not worried that we will not stick together". [...] The Financial Times praises the prime minister's "bold vision" but warns that the road ahead will be perilous. [...] At Prime Minister's Questions, Mr Corbyn urged Mrs May to "stop her threat of a bargain basement Brexit, a low-paid tax haven on the shores of Europe".
He added: "It won't necessarily damage the EU but it would certainly damage this country." [...] Mrs May told MPs: "What I set out yesterday was a plan for a global Britain, bringing prosperity to this country and jobs to people and spreading economic growth across this country." A UK trade deal with Trump? Be careful what you wish for | Politics | The Guardian
Health
A big fear during the TTIP negotiations was that US insurers and health providers would undermine the NHS by pressing for open access to the UK “market” in medical care. “A rushed trade deal with Trump may give ministers cover for their dangerous Brexit strategy but it will not hide the risk that this could be a Trojan horse for NHS privatisation,” warned the shadow health secretary, Jonathan Ashworth on Monday.

What went wrong?

The Thatcher years created a great regression in that belief, I think. We were getting there and then it was reversed. Though it was wicked and unrealisable, the failure of communism had a profound effect. There suddenly seemed no alternative to money as a way of organising society.

Oh for the 1960s! People earned less but could afford more | Money | The Guardian
[ fetish of GDP ] Economic growth since the 1960s has been real, but the link between growth and personal prosperity has broken down, probably since the 1990s. We can carry on pushing for increases in GDP, but it’s meaningless unless it translates into a recovery in living standards. If any government really wants to help the left-behinds, then cutting house prices and rents must be their first priority.

[...] The new fund is expected to deliver as much as £10 million to each community where wells are situated.
