The Myth of Valley DoucheBaggery - John Battelle's Search Blog
But I think our industry culture is moving far faster than the writers at Silicon Valley might wish to believe. I think we’re seeing the rise of a new culture, one that rejects arrogance and the founder worship which breeds it. Inevitable outliers aside, the Valley and technology culture I experience every day in my work at NewCo is one of passion, sweat, earnestness, and good intentions. Sure, we all fuck up. And sure, the press (especially, not surprisingly, the press in New York) has a field day when someone does. But by and large, the teams making companies like Slack, LiveRamp, Medium, Earnest, MetroMile, Lyft, Okta, Pinterest, and hundreds more are damn fine people, and they are dedicating their lives to making something that creates positive change – a product or service that makes the world a better place (even if it’s in a small way). [...] When you’re facing existential threat, our tolerance for douchebaggery in the name of making more money at any cost, ....

What I Learned This Week About Tim Cook’s Apple | Re/code
[ always along the motto: extension of you, part of you. The new Apple under Jobs was NOT an overnight success! It build on its differentiation, strong base, a cult, a Tribe, 1000 True Fans, and build on it stride by stride. Most capitalistic company out of SV, no counter-culture out of largest corp on world. & can pull of iAd coup because it has monopsony! & Duopoly w Android. ] Many people love Apple, others despise it. But, even without Jobs, it cannot be ignored. There simply is no other company that combines such a high-quality hardware line with such well-regarded software platforms. A faltering Samsung has the former, but not the latter. A strong and admirable Google has the latter, but not the former. If you didn’t believe that before, this week’s event made it crystal clear, with once-bitter rivals like Microsoft and Adobe showing up onstage to boast about how well their products worked with new Apple hardware and software. Apple's “Special Event” was underwhelming, but that's a good thing
I felt less bad for my younger, archiving self than I did for Apple. The parts of our lives we wanted instinctively to endure became ink leaked onto pulp, not files housed in silicon. Paper volumes we still house on oft-dusted bookshelves. It was the technology that Apple designed to usher us into the great, digital future that got thrown out – or, if the technology was lucky, encased inside a dust cover and forgotten about for decades. Apple, in time, learned not only to live with the disposability of digital architecture, but to profit from it... // [ the pendulum will swing back again, on a personal level, but for distribution, digital is so much better! The costs of off-the-record reporting are increasingly greater than the benefits, as the culture of talking without attribution gives companies too much control. // lots of companies use this practice / PR ... for what? have good relationships, tend the relationships with reporters/journalists? Alex Gibney’s New Documentary Paints An Ambivalent Portrait Of Steve Jobs | TechCrunch
It opens with footage of the mass outpouring of grief after Jobs’ death in 2011, and the rest of the movie asks: Why did people feel so much attachment to the CEO of an enormous tech company? And is Jobs really worthy of such admiration? Gibney isn’t trying to convince people that they should stop buying Apple products — after all, he’s still got that iPhone. Instead the aim is to raise questions about Jobs’ values and the influence those values had on the rest of Silicon Valley (where Gibney often sees a similar “rough-and-tumble libertarian vibe”). [ ie lying to woz that he got paid only $700 ] &! theatln.tc/1EE17wR &! on.recode.net/1NdvHif - In his mind, his movie is a necessary counterbalance to overly positive portrayals of Apple’s iconic leader. Five years, building a culture, and handing it off. - Laughing Meme
Nothing we know [ about X ] should be assumed to be true. // Technology is the product of the culture that builds it. // If you want to build for the long term, the only guarantee is change. Invest in your people and your ability to ask questions, not your current answers. Your current answers are wrong, or they will be soon. // Software development should be thought of as a cycle of continual learning and improvement rather a progression from start to finish, or a search for correctness. If you aren’t shipping, you aren’t learning. If it slows down shipping, it probably isn’t worth it. Maturity is knowing when to make the trade off and when not to. // You build a culture of learning by optimizing globally not locally. Your improvement, over time, as a team, with shared tools, practices and beliefs is more important than individual pockets of brilliance. And more satisfying. Hey, Advertisers. It's Serena Time! - Bloomberg View
In sports marketing, no one ever got fired for hiring a cute blond female athlete. It is the default choice. This can be, let’s just say it, racist. It’s definitely lookist. But it’s mainly conservative. In advertising, in television, in movies, the tendency is to look backward. Hiring only people who fit past models of success may often not work, but it comes with fewer consequences when it fails than trying something new does. To get all Keynesian about it, “Worldly wisdom teaches that it is better for reputation to fail conventionally than to succeed unconventionally.” [ risking looking like a fool ... vs playing it safe. incrementalism a to b - vs - dreamer/imagination ---- Logic will get you from a to b. It’s fast, global, engaged and influential – so why isn’t Twitter flying? | Technology | The Guardian
Meanwhile, in the past year around 450 people have left the company, according to a study by the Financial Times. That constitutes about 12% of the firm, and includes senior figures. The loss of existing staff is always a worry in a San Francisco tech company: rivals will offer signing bonuses and options on stock that are likely to grow in value, rather than enduring Twitter’s stock-market rollercoaster. [...] Dorsey’s appearance on the results conference call last week was in effect an audition for the job. “We need to do three things. One, we need to ensure a more disciplined execution. Two, we need to simplify our services to deliver Twitter’s value faster. And three, we need to better communicate our value,” he said briskly. He also acknowledged that mismatch between fame and usage. [...] But he notes that user growth still lags, and that “engagement” – how often people who have created an account use it – remains far lower than Facebook’s.

Venture capital and the great big Silicon Valley asshole game | PandoDaily
(( via pando.com/2015/02/12/how-silicon-valleys-counterculture-went-corporate-and-ruined-everything/ )) --- This is a complex topic with no real “right” or “wrong.” You have to consider what the job of a VC is. It’s not to give inner city kids a helping hand; it’s not to make mom-and-pop dreams a reality; it’s not to help nice guys. It’s to maximize returns and fund companies that have an outsized chance of creating billion-dollar plus outcomes in a decade or less. There is a certain personality type that frequently builds these companies—a mix of outsized arrogance, steel-eyed determination, and even some element of delusion. Rational thinkers don’t usually think they can upend whole industries. People who get impacted by social pressure will be talked out of an idea long before it comes to fruition.

How Silicon Valley’s counterculture went corporate and ruined everything | PandoDaily
Politicians, entrepreneurs, artists, activists, hippies, and corporations all working together to make the world a better place? In 2015, that arrangement seems unthinkable. So where did the dream of tech-powered togetherness go wrong? [...] [...] // As of last November, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in San Francisco was $3,350 [£2200]. [...] So contrary to Gosney’s and Archer’s dream of a techno-utopia that benefits every slice of San Francisco’s population, the tech boom — along with various city statutes that limit residential housing — have made it harder than ever for artists and other members of the counterculture to live in the city. These are the very people, mind you, who helped spark the region’s technological revolution. And that’s saying nothing of the struggles felt by teachers, social workers and other non-tech workers struggling to stay afloat as housing prices skyrocket. [...] [C]ity officials and outdated statutes are as much to blame as tech companies

The World’s Biggest Popstars are Walking Contradictions | NOISEY
bit.ly/1HXHZIy &! "However, what's most telling, is that Lorde has become a bit of an icon for the materialists that she set out to criticise. Kanye loves her; "Royals" soundtracked an advert for a $700 Samsung phone; she's collaborated with MAC cosmetics. It's this exact contradiction - I'm this and I'm also this - which is part of a wider social trend that's fucking around with the definition of authenticity and counter-culture. This stems from what, if you want to get academic about it, is called hyperreality - a phenomenon first observed in the eighties by French sociologist Jean Baudrillard. Shows like The Only Way is Essex are the pinnacle of hyperreality, where even though it clearly states that it's been scripted for your pleasure, the programme relies on the viewer buying into the idea of the characters being completely genuine. [...] we don't want to reject consumer culture at all. We want to buy into the idea of rejecting it. [...] We suck it up and go along with it.
