Pando: Female founders, and when good intentions go bad
Last year, I got some well-meaning advice from someone who has generally been very supportive of me and Pando. He told me that I needed to soften my image and tone down my language if I wanted Pando to appeal to more readers in middle America. They don’t like to see an opinionated, mouthy woman swearing. He meant well. But the comment wasn’t too different than an email I got after a recent appearance on Fox News on a Sunday morning, which told me my points were incredibly smart, but this viewer simply couldn’t take any woman seriously unless she wore a string of pearls. Could I please wear pearls next time?

I had alcohol-related breast cancer. Here’s why I still drink | Joanna Moorhead | Opinion | The Guardian
The chief medical officer advises women to think about cancer when having a drink. But if I did that every time I had a glass of wine, I think I’d feel the cancer had won [...] I guess what it comes down to is quite simply the importance of enjoying life. When I had cancer, I discovered that I didn’t just want to survive; I wanted to have fun, to make the most of every single day, and to enjoy happy occasions and meals with my friends and family. [...] drinking wine, beer or tequila adds a dimension to social occasions that I rather enjoy. And somehow it feels to me that it wasn’t worth surviving cancer if I’m going to limit my life to thinking, every time someone offered me a glass of something, about my breast cancer and the likelihood of it returning. [...] Life is too short to cut out something you enjoy in moderation, [ picking up the words from the food lobby, heart disease and cancer in moderation. sprinkling in doubt. to continue that lifestyle. do you say asbestos in mod? ]

Taylor Swift an 'obnoxious Nazi Barbie', writes Camille Paglia | Music | The Guardian
Feminist writer says singer – with her ‘girl squad’ – perpetuates elitism and reminds her of ‘fascist blondes’ of her youth. Camille Paglia has written a scathing critique of Taylor Swift, referring to the singer as an “obnoxious Nazi Barbie” whose “twinkly persona is such a scary flashback to the fascist blondes who ruled the social scene during my youth”. Paglia, known for seminal feminist works such as Sexual Personae, criticised the singer for perpetuating elitism and undermining female empowerment by surrounding herself with a group of girls who were simply “performance props”. Swift is known as the ringleader of a sisterhood of actors, models and singers, such as Selena Gomez, Lena Dunham, Cara Delevingne and Karlie Kloss, who Swift often refers to as her “girl squad”. Many joined the singer on stage during her tour for her latest album, 1989. Paglia, 68, condemned this as “exhibitionist overkill” by the singer.

Rezension ǀ Was wäre ein selbstbestimmtes Leben?
New Statesman cover on childless female politicians provokes heated online debate | Politics | The National
The article won praise too though for highlighting the discrepancy between the proportions of male and female MPs who are parents, [...] 45 per cent of female MPs were childless, compared with 28 per cent of men. Helen Lewis, deputy editor of the New Statesman, who wrote the piece, urged people to read it before criticising, while pointing out that it analysed why both motherhood and childlessness caused problems for women in politics. [...] The analysis was published the week after a row erupted when the Labour MP Helen Goodman wrote in a blog that she was backing Yvette Cooper for leader because she was a mother. // [ Cheap shots. Don't fear failure, unlock your inner creativity, and say yes | Don Dodge | TEDxAthens - YouTube
risk of failure greater than the chance of success. // Success is not final, failure is not fatal. Courage to move forward, counts. Move every day.

When no gender fits: A quest to be seen as just a person - The Washington Post
“I don’t want to be a girl wearing boy’s clothes, nor do I want to be a girl who presents as a boy,” Kelsey wrote. “I just want to be a person who is recognized as a person. That’s how I’m most comfortable. I’m just a person wearing people clothes, who likes to look like myself and have others see me how I see me.” In Kelsey’s mind, the body that would feel right wasn’t the body Kelsey had now. Kelsey wanted a redistribution of muscle, less on the hips and more in the upper body. A lower voice, though not too much — not to where it would sound like a man’s. Neutral.

For These Millennials, Gender Norms Have Gone Out Of Style : NPR
More than two-thirds of people ages 14 to 34 agree that gender does not have to define a person in the way that it used to[.] And 6 in 10 say that men & women do not need to conform to traditional gender roles or behaviors anymore. [...] defying gender expectations. "This generation views gender as a mark of self-expression — they view it as a way of displaying their full sense of self," she says. For example, Rae Tutera, who will appear in an upcoming documentary produced by Lena Dunham about gender nonconformity in fashion, says that the first time she felt like herself was in a men's suit. Tutera, 29, says she is "on the masculine side of the gender spectrum." [...] "Sometimes you have to act braver than you feel," she says, remembering what it felt like to enter a fancy men's suit store in Manhattan. [ ... but ...] most [vast majority of] millennials don't push gender boundaries. [...] [M]illennials are considering the ways in which gender might be flexible. [+See Comments!]

21 Women on the Dumbest Things They’ve Bought -- The Cut
“I have this really bad habit of thinking that because I am a ‘professional woman,’ I need all of this stuff to make me really BE that woman. I thought that it was normal to spend a bunch of money on trendy shoes, [...] My brain can’t accept that it will never own Manolos if I also want to own a home someday.” [...] I spend money on makeup, blowouts, and nail art, in huge part for the Instagram likes. BBC Radio 4 - A History of Ideas, Historian Simon Schaffer on Beauty and Evolution, Feminine Beauty: A social construct?
Feminine Beauty: A social construct? // The French existentialist writer Simone de Beauvoir famously declares in her book The Second Sex that a woman isn’t born a woman, rather she becomes one. Women In Tech: It’s Not Just A Pipeline Problem | TechCrunch
Between ages 25 and 30, 41% of the young talent with credentials in those subject matters are female … [but] 52% of this talent drops out … The most important antigen is the machismo that continues to permeate these work environments … 63% of women in science, engineering and technology have experienced sexual harassment. How Guardians Of The Galaxy Triumphed Over The Film Industry's Backwards Thinking - CinemaBlend.com
This is a kind of sexism that is often overlooked as harmless stereotyping. But that locked-in concept of gender expectation was a roadblock for Perlman again and again, until Marvel trusted in her passion and talent, so overlooked any preconceived notions based on her sex. To Marvel Entertainment's credit, their filmmakers overcame institutional sexism biases to trust in the writer over her gender identity. And because they did, we--all of us--get a movie that by nearly all accounts is astounding and a hell of a good time.

The female Pinterest engineer who pressed tech giants to air embarrassing diversity numbers - San Francisco Business Times

"Pinterest was the first place where I felt like an engineer," said Chou. "It's hard to explain or articulate. When I came here, I was treated as an equal." Sometimes the discrimination is not subtle, like the time when a male engineer at a computer language conference asked her, "What do you do? Photocopy s---?" One major fact that advocates say must be addressed is that far fewer young women than men are learning computer science while in school. // http://www.codedoc.co/directors-thoughts/

The Dispute Between Radical Feminism and Transgenderism
AND here the critique http://bit.ly/1tXlqLW & http://bit.ly/1ujpPJ9 // http://bit.ly/V1UxtS // http://bit.ly/1orNN4F // "In failing to provide a semblance of balance to the voices in the piece, this account becomes hopelessly skewed, and becomes little more than a radical feminist propaganda piece. Early on in her essay, Goldberg presents an extremely simplified and stereotyped view of trans women’s identities. She writes: “Trans women say that they are women because they feel female — that, as some put it, they have women’s brains in men’s bodies.” First, considering that the length of the article discusses trans people (and focuses heavily on trans women), to reduce the explanation of their complex experiences to three words — “they feel female” — is offensively reductionist. While such a passing nod to trans experiences might be not be out of place in a more LGBTQ-geared publication, in a more general consumption magazine[.]" + http://bit.ly/VkWUIA + http://huff.to/1Bo9aJr

What I love about Abramson’s [...] she’s named it, she’s owned it, but she doesn’t make herself a victim. She knows she lives in a sexist world and that makes her victories– and even her defeats– that much sweeter. This is how we should talk about women in the world. Goldfrapp's Music Video Explores Gender Identity And Gives You Chills
It’s very much about memory, identity and gender. I’ve always been fascinated by dual creatures, personas, people, personalities, and transformation. I think it’s a theme that’s pretty much always in fairy tales and horror, which I love. What struck me about Annabel is that the parents are in total denial of what their child is: this child has to choose in the end, and that’s what society is making them do. Why can’t you be both? I feel really strongly about that whole concept in so many things in life. All the characters in these songs are trying to figure out who they are, where they’re going, and why they are who they are. /watch?v=TxCn8UyrAmk http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alison_Goldfrapp

Laverne Cox: Trans people should not put their dreams on hold because of who they are
And all that’s about other people’s expectations of who he’s supposed to be, it’s not about who he actually is. So if he could just let go of all that, he’d probably be a lot happier – but then he’d have to question the privilege that he’s been given, and a lot of people don’t want to do that. And I have to say if I grew up with all this privilege, I don’t know if I’d want to question it either.

Through the Lookism Glass by Naomi Wolf - Project Syndicate
It is doubtless demoralizing and distracting to an influential woman to be continually treated like a bimbo, or else told by major news outlets how unattractive, old, fat, or badly dressed she is. This gauntlet of scrutiny is why young women with great leadership qualities are often reluctant to enter the public eye: they see this abuse, whether “positive” or negative, as a no-win proposition, one that powerful men simply do not face. [...] No media outlet would ever print such observations, which, when aimed at men, would appear insulting, inappropriately personal, and irrelevant. So why is it still acceptable to run public commentary about the state of Merkel’s cleavage, or Hillary Clinton’s ankles?

What About the Guys Who Do Fit the 'Gay Stereotype'? - Maya Dusenbery - The Atlantic
[ People like to put people in Labeled Boxes. ] "People think gayness has something to do with femininity when really we just need to erase that stereotype from our minds," he said. "LGBT people come in all different types and shapes and forms." [...] "In sports right now, there are two different stereotypes—that there are no gay male athletes, and every female athlete is a lesbian," [...] "Female professional athletes are already gender non-conforming. Male ones are still worshiped as exemplars of traditional masculinity." [...] There's no doubt those are stereotypes that need unpacking. Sociologists have long noted that homophobia is a fundamental ingredient of masculinity in modern American culture. [...] Ever since we've been asking about it in public opinion polls, men have been more likely than women to espouse anti-gay views—a fact that buttressed the theory that masculinity is intimately connected with homophobia[.]
