The UK must invest in mental health help | Letters | Society | The Guardian
the cost of mental ill health in England has been estimated to be £105bn per year. Fortunately, a number of evidence-based psychological therapies exist and are effective. Investment in psychological therapies to date has been a success, but it is a success that could be multiplied. The improving access to psychological therapies programme is only funded to reach “at least 15%” of the people who need it, and retention and recovery rates could be improved. [...] &! Osborne said that the ILF was “such an important fund … that we will be able to include it in the budgets going forwards”. Reality is not living up to the rhetoric. [ 7-day NHS? ]

Bake Off star Tamal Ray on junior doctors' strike - BBC News
[ misrepresentation of some paper (weekend deaths)! ] Speaking on the BBC's This Week, he says the government is "playing on public fears of under-staffing" at weekends, saying the NHS already offers world-class class surgery, seven days a week. “If you have a medical emergency, you will always be seen,” he says.

The Guardian view on fair play in politics: a Conservative coup | Editorial | Opinion | The Guardian
From trade union reform to parliamentary process, the Tories show a pattern of contempt for the protocols of democracy [...] Thanks to a crafty, albeit constitutionally permitted, parliamentary manoeuvre, a cut that will affect hundreds of thousands of disadvantaged young people went through without proper debate or vote on the floor of the Commons. David Cameron commands a slender majority, but it is enough to pass most of his legislative programme in a more transparent fashion. Only the most controversial elements risk obstruction, either through rebellion on the Tory benches in the lower house or rejection in the upper one. [...] That episode, like the vote on student grants, is consistent with a pattern displayed by this government of impatience with democratic norms, verging on contempt. One habit is bundling measures of primary importance up in secondary legislation. [...] lay the foundations for a long-term Conservative monopoly on government.

Overseas nurses denied NHS jobs - BBC News
[ IDEOLOGICAL CAREER POLITICIANS MOVE: cut training budget (bursaries) in 2010 (together with lib dems), and 5 years later turn it into student loan public, with that move we create more places to learn. lol! conning way. yeah but also move the item off the public's balance sheet. ] [ http://bit.ly/1LPhnMa http://bit.ly/1mZySRj http://bit.ly/1TesYGF http://ind.pn/1JNyGPn http://bit.ly/1WcXHFL ] >> A Department of Health spokesman said: "The MAC is currently reviewing the shortage occupation list. Staffing is a priority and there are already more than 8,500 more nurses on our wards since 2010 and 50,000 more nurses in training. "We want more home-grown staff in the NHS and our recent changes to student funding will create up to 10,000 more nursing, midwifery and allied health professional training places by 2020."
