Option Games: Common Stock Values Get Murkier — The Information
Valuing common stock has gotten trickier for startups. The growing number and complexity of rights on preferred shares are causing companies to adjust their reasoning around how much their common stock is worth, according to firms providing the valuations and lawyers overseeing them. But companies still have a lot of discretion, a reminder that how startups calculate their value frequently bears little relation to big funding headlines. [...] Valuations of startup firms’ common stock for employee option grants has been complicated by increasing complexity of rights on preferred stock and secondary market transactions. [...] [ !!! Snapchat offered common stock only in recent (May 2015) investment, Alibaba & two hedge funds were ok with it. But further termsheet details (liquidation preferences) unknown. Our environmental deficit is now beyond nature’s ability to regenerate | Environment | The Guardian
We are heading fast in the wrong direction despite the world gearing up to approve new sustainable development goals and a new climate accord [...] The world enters ecological ‘overshoot’ this year on 13 August, six days earlier than last year. All the world’s production and consumption for the rest of the year, this suggests, then runs up an environmental deficit beyond nature’s ability to regenerate itself and safely absorb our economic waste. It’s a highly conservative estimate, based on the best data available. // no amount of profits/money can't buy us a 2nd earth in 30 years. // Stop burning fossil fuels now: there is no CO2 'technofix', scientists warn - bit.ly/1UiJmqB - Researchers have demonstrated that even if a geoengineering solution to CO2 emissions could be found, it wouldn’t be enough to save the oceans

The real victims of increased tuition fees? The old
Applications from 18-year-olds are on the rise, including from Britain's poorest families. But part-time and mature students are being deterred. [...] George Osborne talks of his vision of moving to a “higher wage economy”. But while improvement in skills are necessary to lifting productivity, wages and boosting growth, adults are being put off investing in their education. The consequences are particularly deleterious for those from disadvantaged backgrounds, who are more likely to apply to university later and on a part-time basis; the unattractiveness of part-time courses thus imperils social mobility. [...] The fees system for mature and part-time students is putting too many off developing the skills they need for the UK to thrive. Go tell the boss: let me work less and I’ll produce more | Life and style | The Guardian
The five-day work week is an artificial and outmoded idea. A shorter working week can boost efficiency and an employee’s happiness [...] The latest trend might have more going for it, though: more tech businesses are experimenting with four-day weeks. As Ryan Carson, co-founder of the education startup Treehouse, put it: “You get all day Friday off, instead of pretending like you’re working when you’re not.” [...] The most important reason to work fewer days, of course, is that it’s good for families, friendship, hobbies and the human spirit. But the most interesting implication of the current experiments, backed by some academic research, is that it appears to be good for productivity and work quality, too. Partly that’s because desk-based “knowledge work” relies on plenty of brain rest as well as exertion.

// Compromise must be found, a pause for debt repaymen (EFSF, ESM, ECB) for ~15-20 years. The lady's not for turning: cinematic portrayals of lesbians need to get real | Film | The Guardian
predatory trope ( a significant or recurrent theme) // "The age difference is stark, but beyond this, the narrative of lesbian conversion is there in all its problematic glory, throwing up questions about sexual identity and coercion. Not only by using an uncomfortable stereotype about predatory lesbians, but also by treating sexual identity as if it were a taste in food: here, try the asparagus; if you eat it enough you might like it. [...] Indeed, the conversion trope itself is probably a response to the difficulty in depicting real lesbian relationships – they have to be couched in stereotypical terms for mainstream audiences to connect with. [...] The recurrence of the cliche is one that will hopefully disappear as being public about your queer identity becomes easier, and we begin to recognise that lesbian women can have boring, conventional love stories just like anyone else."

Why Elon Musk Just Opened Up All of Tesla's Patents : The New Yorker
It’s a risky move but a shrewd one. It’s one that wouldn’t make a lot of sense for a lot of companies. But it does for Tesla. The company’s stock has doubled in the past year, but the industry is struggling. Musk’s biggest electic-car-entrepreneur-frenemy, Shai Agassi, led his company, Better Place, into bankruptcy a year ago. It’s a good moment for the industry to get a jolt. “Putting in long hours for a corporation is hard,” Musk said on Thursday during a conference call. “Putting in long hours for a cause is easy.” What exactly is that cause? It’s bringing clean cars to the people, of course. But it’s also, it seems now, showing the world a new way to think about innovation. || +++ http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/06/17/teslas-elon-musk-on-making-electric-car-patents-public-were-really-all-in-the-same-ship/ >> // Industrial Policy - 1% and increasing incrementally on gas guzzling cars. + emissions tax on consumer driving a gas guzzeler.

Sure you can TiVo the Oscars. But you better not open Twitter for two hours if you do. And lastly, with “just” 300 million users or so Twitter desparately needs to go mainstream. Like it or not, this is a generation of consumer Web companies graded on the Facebook and LinkedIn curves. You gotta either have the size of the former or the monetization of the latter. The lowest common denominator on global culture are movies, music, TV, and sports. As his friend Ryan Seacrest can attest, more people vote for American Idol hopefuls than elected officials." || Twitter is now a live stream of what is happening. The shortest & most accessible form to NOW. Not more. Not less. Your hourly quick fix. Part of the home screen. Next to Snapchat & WhatsApp & FB ... + http://bit.ly/1rkVyMh + http://bit.ly/1g1LJeO

Flawless Trans Women Carmen Carrera and Laverne Cox Respond Flawlessly To Katie Couric’s Invasive Questions | Autostraddle
Cox said that the preoccupation with genitalia and transition objectifies trans women and distracts us from the real issues. [...] Then Cox hit it out of the park when she said, “by focusing on bodies we don’t focus on the lived realities of that oppression and that discrimination.” [...] Trans people are more than just our bodies, and these two women showed that in the absolute best way possible. + http://katiecouric.com/videos/carmen-carreras-quest-to-become-a-victorias-secret-angel/ + http://katiecouric.com/videos/orange-is-the-new-black-laverne-cox/ + Carmen Carrera Discusses Transphobia On HuffPost Live - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9X29T3TU1c + http://rollingout.com/entertainment/carmen-carrera-responds-chelsea-handlers-transphobic-jokes/ + @7:25 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDy4re6C6sA

BBC News - Is Hollywood's blockbuster model broken?
The irony is that Spielberg almost singlehandedly invented the blockbuster genre. When his film Jaws was released in 1975, Hollywood realised that making a few big-budget films a year that appealed to the masses was more lucrative than making dozens of smaller ones, and a business model was born. Since then budgets have soared and artistic merit has taken a back seat. [...] After a wave of acquisitions in the 80s and 90s, the six "majors" that dominate global box office are now parts of massive media conglomerates. They have found ways to both boost profitability of their films and mitigate the risks associated with making such huge investments. [...] The first thing the studios have done is spread the risk by getting dozens of smaller production companies to invest alongside them, reducing their exposure to a potential flop.

▶ Michael Sandel: Why we shouldn't trust markets with our civic life - YouTube
n the past three decades, says Michael Sandel, the US has drifted from a market economy to a market society; it's fair to say that an American's experience of shared civic life depends on how much money they have. (Three key examples: access to education, access to justice, political influence.) In a talk and audience discussion, Sandel asks us to think honestly on this question: In our current democracy, is too much for sale?

BBC News - 'Cosmetic crisis' waiting to happen
Injections to plump up the skin are a "crisis waiting to happen" and should be available only on prescription, a UK review of cosmetic procedures has said. It warned that dermal fillers, covered by only the same level of regulation as toothbrushes, could cause lasting harm. The independent review added cosmetic surgery had been "trivialised". It also attacked "distasteful" companies for putting profit ahead of care. The review has recommended a series of measures to better protect patients. It was commissioned by the Department of Health in England, but the findings will be passed to health ministers throughout the UK. [...] Profits before patients, that's what happens. Surgery is sold like double glazing and it's totally wrong” >> http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-22277890

Topical vitamin A treatment of recalcitrant common warts.
Topical vitamin A has been shown to be a successful treatment of common warts in prior informal studies.

Daily topical application of natural vitamin A derived from fish liver oil (25,000 IU) led to replacement of all the warts with normal skin. Most of the smaller warts had been replaced by 70 days. A large wart on the middle knuckle required 6 months of vitamin A treatment to resolve completely.

Clare Foges: The raven haired poet who wrote David Cameron's EU referendum speech | Mail Online
In an article for ConservativeHome website, she lamented the death of rousing political speech making.
Referring to her hatred of ‘antiseptic oratory’, she said it had many causes. She believed it was the ‘natural successor to spin’, and she attacked politicians for their reluctance to use rhetoric in case they were seen as ‘pretentious’.

She said: ‘So, though no less educated than Gladstone or Churchill, they appeal to the lowest common denominator.

‘Like private school kids shedding their blazer at the bus stop to look cool, they shed the heavy mantle of their education to emulate — and hopefully appeal to — an imaginary “everyman”.’
