BBC Radio 4 - Money Box, Gift Aid
When you give to charity do you tick the box that says please Gift Aid this donation? If you do then George Osborne kindly adds 25% to the gift. So if you give £100 it is worth £125 to the charity. This scheme costs more than £1 billion a year. But should we subsidise charities? One woman who thinks not is Lady Moyra Bannister. She wrote to the Times recently to argue that all gift aid should be scrapped. Paul Lewis asked her why. // >> individual chooses where his tax goes to. // companies also receive tax relief for investment // HMRC needs to close tax loopholes, for that needs some more staff to investigate dubious charities that are used as tax avoidance schemes.

BBC News - 'Half of UK people' will get cancer
One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives, analysis suggests. Cancer Research UK said this estimate, using a new calculation method, replaced a forecast of more than one in three people developing the disease. It said longer life expectancies meant more people would be affected. But it was not inevitable and improving lifestyle, such as losing weight and quitting smoking, could have a major impact, the charity added. The good news is cancer survival figures are also rising. &! Cancer diagnosis rate of 1,000 per day to 'push NHS to limit' The NHS will be "pushed to its limit" by the end of 2016 by rising numbers of cancer patients, a charity says. [...] The Department of Health said it had invested £750m in cancer care. [...] "Cracks in the NHS are already beginning to show," - bbc.co.uk/news/health-30040451

Lance Armstrong and Livestrong | Lance Armstrong | OutsideOnline.com
If Lance Armstrong went to jail and Livestrong went away, that would be a huge setback in our war against cancer, right? Not exactly, because the famous nonprofit donates almost nothing to scientific research. BILL GIFFORD looks at where the money goes and finds a mix of fine ideas, millions of dollars aimed at “awareness,” and a few very blurry lines. [...] Others noticed an annoying tendency: whenever questions about doping arose, Armstrong and his supporters changed the subject to his cancer work, a tactic that the bicycling website NY Velocity called “raising the cancer shield.” [...] But Livestrong spends massively on advertising, PR, and “branding,” all of which helps preserve Armstrong’s marketability at a time when he’s under fire. Meanwhile, Armstrong has used the goodwill of his foundation to cut business deals that have enriched him personally, an ethically questionable move.

Charity and taxation: Sweetened charity | The Economist
Reducing tax bill by giving to charities ...

"The basic question remains: why should taxpayer B face a bigger tax bill because taxpayer A chooses to give to charity?"

***
Thorny topic among Economists ...
Weighting the issue, what benefits most society? What is an acceptable liberal approach (as it is spending/consumption in one way or the other). And how to achieve elasticity 1 or greater and achieving a balancing act for both sides. Also one could make it more transparent with public records. Who give to whom how much.
