The tech industry has cut a Google’s worth of jobs in the past 12 months

Jobs threat at medical equipment plants in Ayrshire
A medical equipment firm is consulting its employees on plans to close one of its two Ayrshire factories and move more production work to China.
Guardian, formerly BDF Healthcare, makes products for surgical theatres and employs about 120 people at sites in Girvan and Patna.
Parent group, Berendsen PLC, said a consultation had begun on Tuesday and would run for 30 days.
The firm said redundancies were a possible outcome but not definite.

As unicorn startups send customer service gigs to the hinterland, is Silicon Valley exporting its prosperity, or just dead-end jobs?
In the end, only a couple of the San Francisco Lyft staffers decided to go to Nashville. Some scrambled to find new jobs in the company, and the rest got severance and left. Six months later, two people I talked to are still looking for jobs, in a city that boasts a 3.4 percent unemployment rate. “I feel a little burned by this experience,” said one. “There’s just this understanding that if you work for customer service in the tech world you’re not valued. Those are soft skills, and associated with women, they’re not super valued.” [...] With their skills deemed better suited to Nashville, Lyft’s workers can’t help but internalize another message about whether they belong in increasingly Darwinian San Francisco. “It doesn’t make any fucking sense to live in one of the most expensive areas in the country and work in nonprofit development,” one told me.
Another customer service worker I’d talked to from a big software company decided that if she wanted to stick around the Bay Area, it was time to teach herself to code.

shortage of supply = unaffordable = nobody can afford to live there, work there, study there. or have to commute from out of town for 1 hour or more. // this is not only a problem in Oxford. NHS Grampian has problems of recruiting because unaffordable house prices and rents pushed up by Oil Industry and the lack of new housing. Same for teaching jobs. // all the while building companies make pumper profits and even skirt around the edges to lower the ratio of social and affordable housing they have to provide with each new big project. its in their interest, if prices were to fell, they would make less money. so they build not enough to keep up with demand at all. and not enough so each new builds profit rises because of risen demand and people willing to pay more for the same house or flat from previous year or two or three despite no real improvement in the build technically/energy efficiency wise/or architecture wise - modern, wide open, big windows. //

Growth vs Retention – AVC
"Retention was clearly bad, and that’s what killed us" [...] [...] This all comes back to stepping on the gas before finding product market fit. You might think you have product market fit and so you scale up your hiring, your marketing, your sales, and your capital raising and spending. But if you can’t retain a healthy percentage of your users past ninety days, you don’t have product market fit yet and all the investment you make in your business is just money down the drain. So focus first on your 90 day retention numbers and make sure to nail them and prove you have product market fit. Then scale. // find natural/organic marketing - advertising - instead of building a non-product related cost center like sales, marketing, and advertising. short-cuts like these don't fix the product per se.

Facebook wants to narrow the inequality gap between its technical and non-technical workers | PandoDaily
Facebook is advocating for higher wages, paid time off, and other benefits for many of the non-technical workers it hires through independent contractors. [...] This news follows increasing unrest about how tech companies, which are known for offering many of their employees ridiculous benefits and high pay, treat the workers who don’t write a line of code but still help the business run. [...] Yet the Journal notes that these benefits pale in comparison to those offered to the company’s technical workers, who receive better pay, more vacation time, and $4,000 in “baby cash” on top of their paid parental leave.
