Taxing red meat would save many lives, research shows | Environment | The Guardian
Processed meat would need to be taxed at 166% in Germany to recover most of the healthcare costs of eating it there - Taxing red meat would save many lives and raise billions to pay for healthcare, according to new research. It found the cost of processed meat such as bacon and sausages would double if the harm they cause to people’s health was taken into account. - The World Health Organization declared processed red meat to be a carcinogen in 2015, and unprocessed red meat such as steaks and chops to be a probable carcinogen. &! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-46122227

Plastic kills – let's stop treating it like a normal part of modern life
The oceans are now so full of man-made detritus that our health is being put at risk too. About a third of fish caught off the coast of the UK now contain traces of plastic. Some plastics contain diethylhexyl phthalate, which is toxic and thought to be carcinogenic. When you bear in mind that British seafood eaters may ingest more than 10,000 pieces of plastic each year, it’s obvious that plastic has been a complete disaster for health.

dosage/exposure amount debate - not applicable to carcinogens. see nutritionfacts.org // Törnqvist counters this argument with the observation that, although some chemicals have a minimum threshold concentration below which they are not dangerous at all, this is not the case for DNA-damaging chemicals, known as carcinogens. “With chemicals that damage DNA it’s a linear dose response, so even the smallest dose contributes to the risk,” she said. “There is no threshold dose for the effect.”

Sugar tax: How bold is it?
[Gov still wants to carry out a consultation = Watered down by Food Lobby ] But the more important question is whether this will have an impact on child obesity rates. One in 10 children start primary school obese. By the end, one in five are obese. If you add in those who are overweight, it's one in three. [...] our diets are simply not good enough. [...] Food Foundation produced a model of a typical family's diet. [...] consumed too much sugar and saturated fat and too little fibre, fruit, vegetables and oily fish. [...] However, this should not be seen in isolation. The government is expected to publish its much delayed child obesity strategy in the summer. That could include restrictions on advertising and marketing, as well as a sustained campaign to reduce the sugar content of foods and drinks across the board.

Johnson & Johnson hit with $72m damages in talc cancer case - BBC News
Is talc safe? There have been concerns for years that using talcum powder, particularly on the genitals, may increase the risk of ovarian cancer. But the evidence is not conclusive. The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies talc used on the genitals as "possibly carcinogenic" because of the mixed evidence. [...] Also there does not seem to be a "dose-response" for talc, unlike with known carcinogens like tobacco where the more you smoke, the greater the risk of lung cancer. [...] The charity Ovacome says there is no definitive evidence and that the worst-case scenario is that using talc increases the risk of cancer by a third. But it adds: "Ovarian cancer is a rare disease, and increasing a small risk by a third still gives a small risk. So even if talc does increase the risk slightly, very few women who use talc will ever get ovarian cancer."

Government has no idea about Cancer Drugs Fund's impact, MPs say | Society | The Guardian

Blood test could determine prostate cancer therapy - BBC News
[ public perception doesn't exist, about the horrors of cancer, chemo and radiotherapy, and invasive surgery that makes you incontinent and have no sex life anymore ] A blood test can determine whether prostate cancer patients are likely to respond to drugs, scientists say. Tests on 97 men, described in Science Translational Medicine, were able to tell whether tumours were already resistant to the drug abiraterone. [...] Abiraterone is a potent drug able to shrink tumours, but only some men benefit. [...] Cancers can evolve resistance to drugs over time, so the team of scientists set about looking for evidence in the fragments of tumour DNA that float in the blood stream.

Prostate cancer drug ruling a 'fiasco', says charity - BBC News
[ end of life management. after extensive surgery failed, chemo failed, you are a broken man who needs adult pampers because of incontinence and wait for your last meal managing the spread of cancer with morphine. nobody talks about those extremes. something like this should get onto the packaging of bacon. ] A charity says a decision by the NHS in England to reject a drug for men with prostate cancer is a "fiasco". Abiraterone is already given to patients at the end-of-life after chemotherapy as it gives patients an extra few months. But the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence said it was not cost-effective to offer it earlier. It said while the drug improved quality of life, it was unclear whether it had the same impact on life expectancy. This was due to problems with the research data, NICE said, claiming the trial was finished early - something disputed by the drug's makers Janssen.

The Chemical in Cupcake Wrappers and Cookware Might Be Causing Cancer | Mother Jones
C8 is in a chemical family called PFCs (perfluorinated chemicals)—the same water- and stain-proofing class of chemicals used to make rain gear, pizza box and popcorn bag liners, stainproof upholstery treatments, and those waxy slips that hold pastries at cafes. Dozens of studies have linked PFCs to all sorts of health problems, from kidney and testicular cancer to increased risk of miscarriages. (3M phased out the chemical from production in 2002 due to potential health hazards.) [...] PFC contamination may not be isolated to the Ohio Valley. Monsanto asks California to pull plan to list herbicide as cancer cause | Reuters
If this passes and the California EPA labels glyphosate as a carcinogen, it's going to be another hit to their earnings. //&! on.fb.me/1jC5DTy - Glyphosate is the main ingredient in Monsanto's Roundup herbicide as well as many other herbicides. [...] The OEHHA gave notice in September that it intended to list glyphosate under Proposition 65, a state initiative enacted in 1986 to inform residents about cancer-causing chemicals. State officials said the action is required after the World Health Organization's (WHO) cancer research committee in March classified glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen. The WHO's research unit said it reviewed many scientific studies, including two out of Sweden, one out of Canada and at least three in the United States before making its classification. Roughly 8,000 comments were filed regarding the state action, according to officials, including those from Monsanto.

BBC Two - Horizon, 2014-2015, Is Binge Drinking Really That Bad?, What does binge drinking really do to your body?
Chris and Xand are joined by Dr Jalan and Dr Mehta from the Royal Free Hospital to discover the true effects that alcohol can have on the body during a single binge. // acid aldehyde damages the gut lining, gut becomes leaky, bacteria leak into the body/blood stream "bacterial poison effect" - those bacteria which should be only in your gut, gets the immune system going - creating inflammation. And at rate of western average drinking pattern, this is constant inflammation response to a immune system on constant attack. Include meat which too creates a 'leaky gut.' The generalness of alcohol as carcinogen as well as the meat (animal products). Smoking. Second-hand smoke. Less sleep quality. Add Tanning. ... Its the perfect mix for premature aging and cancer as well as heart disease/cardiovascular disease. And the liver scarred by the western diet and the alcohol [Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is on the rise.] Peoples stupid short-term view/behavior is a NHS Budget Bomb.

As I lay dying - LA Times
"The most powerful organization in the breast cancer universe, Susan G. Komen , has raised $2.5 billion over the last 20 years, much more than many corporations will ever earn. Most of that money continues to go to a breast cancer “awareness” campaign that is now painfully out of date." A red meat-derived glycan promotes inflammation and cancer progression
(( http://nutritionfacts.org/?s=Neu5Gc )) A well known, epidemiologically reproducible risk factor for human carcinomas is the long-term consumption of “red meat” of mammalian origin. [...] Taken together, our data provide an unusual mechanistic explanation for the epidemiological association between red meat consumption and carcinoma risk. This mechanism might also contribute to other chronic inflammatory processes epidemiologically associated with red meat consumption. /// Similar mechanisms may contribute to the association of red meat consumption with other diseases, such as atherosclerosis and type 2 diabetes, which are also exacerbated by inflammation.

Could eating burnt toast stunt your unborn baby's growth? | Mail Online
clear link between acrylamide in food and the health of newborn babies.

study, published in the peer-reviewed Environmental Health Perspectives journal,

Researchers say the largest source of acrylamide in the Bradford mums-to-be diet was chips.

‘Our advice to them is to replace crisps and chips with vegetables and fruit. The food industry must also explore effective ways of reducing acrylamide levels in its products.’

Unfortunately, this poison forms naturally in carbohydrate-rich, starchy foods when they’re fried, baked, grilled, toasted or roasted at temperatures greater than 120c.

Crisps and chips are the worst offenders, but crispbreads, many breakfast cereals, biscuits, coffee and bread also contain acrylamide, albeit in lesser amounts, so, too, does burnt toast.

the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency considers acrylamide so toxic that it has set the safe level for human consumption at almost zero.
