Plus size models are unhealthy, says Edwina Currie - BBC News
Former MP Edwina Currie has said size 14 model Ashley Graham looks "unhealthy" and that the fashion industry is encouraging people to become obese. Speaking on BBC Breakfast she said encouraging obesity was just as dangerous as encouraging people to be size zero. She was reacting to a newspaper article written by journalist Katie Glass, who also appeared on the programme.

Warum die Thighbrows auf Instagram auf die Thigh Gap folgen - Style - bento
Bye, Thigh Gap. [Hi] Thighbrows. [ superficial world that Social Media created. From social media to the catwalk, is fantasy beauty failing young women? | Life and style | The Guardian
The world of vloggers and YouTubers has created a perverse, homogenised “beauty” with no diversity or reality. Jane Cunningham, journalist [...] The concept of appearance as a commodity to be valued has filtered from Hollywood to family homes across the UK. A 2013 attitudes survey by the Guide Association finding that 87% of girls aged 11-21 believe women are judged more on their appearance than their ability. The dissatisfaction resulting from the oft-perpetuated narrow vision of a beauty ideal can lead to low self-esteem – and worse. Jane Cunningham, the journalist behind Britishbeautyblogger.com, says young girls come to her in tears, feeling hopeless and helpless, unable to reconcile their own appearance with what they believe to be beautiful.

Are night shifts killing me? - bbc.in/1SG209a // hard wired to sleep at night. even organs // bbc.in/1fHEU5o - Alarm clocks may be set at 3am, but body clocks never get used to the night shift (regardless of how much sleep an individual gets). This can disrupt the rhythm of vital gene activity. Night workers are likely to sleep less and less well than those keeping daytime hours, as they try to get their shut-eye while the rest of the street cuts its grass and revs its engines in the full glare of daylight. Those starting work at 4am are thought to have the mental prowess of those who’ve downed a few whiskies, which may explain a higher rate of work injuries at night than in the day. Cause of cancer. BBC Radio 5 live - In Short, Teenager: 'Dangerous' selfie habit caused mental illness
A teenager who became addicted to taking selfies says it is important people are educated about how "dangerous" the habit can be. Danny Bowman began taking up to 70 selfies a day aged 14 to "impress girls" but his addiction "got out of hand". His habit became a "full-blown mental illness," and at worst he refused to leave the house for six months. After receiving hospital treatment for Body Dysmorphic Disorder, Danny, now 19, said: "You zoom into every flaw... if I had a spot, I didn't used to go out of the house." "Young people are starting to realise that in this selfie age, it can be quite dangerous," he said.

Why gym-toned men are a huge turn-off - Telegraph
Pratt told Glamour magazine, "I thought for a while I was going to make a career playing the fat friend… but doing Zero Dark Thirty [which required Pratt to lose weight] opened my eyes to the idea that I could be taken more seriously as a leading man character." It’s horrible but heartening to know that to some extent, Hollywood is a land of equality, and that men are under just as much pressure as women to maintain a certain body shape. But Pratt added, "Who knows, maybe [Guardians Of The Galaxy] will be the last movie I’ll be in shape for and then I’ll get fat again. My wife would appreciate it. She likes me fat." I’m with Anna Farris on this one.

IMF study finds inequality is damaging to economic growth | Business | The Guardian
International Monetary Fund paper dismisses rightwing argument that redistributing incomes is self-defeating. [...] It is 18 months since the IMF published its controversial view that government cuts to public-sector spending were having a larger detrimental effect than previously thought. The paper, written by its chief economist, Olivier Blanchard, was incendiary and sparked denials in London and Brussels where calls for austerity were strongest. [...] In an interview later Ostry said it was his belief that the inclusion of higher welfare payments would only support the argument in favour of redistribution. BBC News - 'Cosmetic crisis' waiting to happen
Injections to plump up the skin are a "crisis waiting to happen" and should be available only on prescription, a UK review of cosmetic procedures has said. It warned that dermal fillers, covered by only the same level of regulation as toothbrushes, could cause lasting harm. The independent review added cosmetic surgery had been "trivialised". It also attacked "distasteful" companies for putting profit ahead of care. The review has recommended a series of measures to better protect patients. It was commissioned by the Department of Health in England, but the findings will be passed to health ministers throughout the UK. [...] Profits before patients, that's what happens. Journal of Eating Disorders | Abstract | Masculinity and femininity in the divergence of male body image concerns
Given recent assertions suggesting that gender role endorsement may be relevant in the divergence of male body image concerns, this study examined the self-reported gender role endorsement in opposing dimensional extremes of male body image disorders, namely, muscle dysmorphia and anorexia nervosa. This study further examined the relationship between gender role endorsement and eating disordered and muscle dysmorphia disorder pathology. > http://medicalxpress.com/news/2013-03-anorexia-bigorexia-men-perceptions-masculinity.html
