Workers or Shirkers? Ian Hislop's Victorian Benefits
An entertaining, provocative film in which Ian explores the colourful history behind one of the most explosive issues of our times - welfare: who deserves to be helped, and who doesn't. [... ] all hate, no heart. just spreadsheets. at Whitehall, no 11. [...] Benefit Street = victorian freak show/circus of curiosities [...] writing about others, "othering" them. demonising them or putting them on pedestals, making them saints. [...] IDS "a single mother wo aspiration is a product of the system" would correct that, a product of her environment (society) [ie gentrification - poor living w poor door to door. and everyone is looking down on them.].

I had alcohol-related breast cancer. Here’s why I still drink | Joanna Moorhead | Opinion | The Guardian
The chief medical officer advises women to think about cancer when having a drink. But if I did that every time I had a glass of wine, I think I’d feel the cancer had won [...] I guess what it comes down to is quite simply the importance of enjoying life. When I had cancer, I discovered that I didn’t just want to survive; I wanted to have fun, to make the most of every single day, and to enjoy happy occasions and meals with my friends and family. [...] drinking wine, beer or tequila adds a dimension to social occasions that I rather enjoy. And somehow it feels to me that it wasn’t worth surviving cancer if I’m going to limit my life to thinking, every time someone offered me a glass of something, about my breast cancer and the likelihood of it returning. [...] Life is too short to cut out something you enjoy in moderation, [ picking up the words from the food lobby, heart disease and cancer in moderation. sprinkling in doubt. to continue that lifestyle. do you say asbestos in mod? ]

Billionaire supports reported inquiry into possible ExxonMobil cover-up | Environment | The Guardian
Activist Tom Steyer’s comments followed reports that California attorney general is looking into what the world’s biggest oil company knew about climate change. Billionaire environmental activist Tom Steyer spoke out on Wednesday in support of an unconfirmed investigation by California into allegations that ExxonMobil spent decades lying to investors and the public about its knowledge of climate change. “We don’t have the facts yet, but I think that there is enough that has been revealed that it’s totally appropriate that (California) be conducting this investigation,” Steyer told the Guardian. “Anybody who puts out intentionally misleading information I think should be answering to us.” Steyer’s comments came hours after the Los Angeles Times reported that California’s attorney general, Kamala Harris, is looking into what ExxonMobil, the world’s biggest oil company, knew about climate change going as far back as the early 1980s.

Plan to end student grants without Commons vote outrages opposition | Politics | The Guardian
[ shifting public debt onto private debt balance sheet. = no vision! debt is still there in economy! paying higher interest rates. -- vs -- bankers gambling debt put on public balance sheet! ] Ministers have been accused of an “outrageous” attempt to sneak through their proposals to end student grants in England without proper scrutiny by MPs. The plan to scrap maintenance grants, which help half a million of the poorest students pay for university life, will go through a legislation committee on Thursday, without a vote and debate on the floor of the House of Commons. [...] Labour is opposing the change and the lack of scrutiny. Gordon Marsden, the shadow universities minister, said it was “not simply technical tinkering but a major change by the government that will deprive around half a million of England’s students from lower income and disadvantaged households, of maintenance grant funding”. // &! VW: Das Auto?
UK seems to relax pressure on Caymans over company register | US news | The Guardian
The UK government appears to have relaxed its pressure on the Cayman Islands to create a register of company ownership, despite David Cameron’s plea last year for overseas territories to do so in the interests of tax transparency. The prime minister promised to introduce a public register of beneficial ownership in the UK and wrote to the overseas territories last year urging them to consider doing the same, arguing that public access to a central list is “vital to meeting the urgent challenges of illicit finance and tax evasion”. However, the Cayman Islands is one of several offshore territories – including the British Virgin Islands and Bermuda – that are refusing to implement the idea after consultation. // sanctions for the vulnerable, disabled, sick, deprived, in poverty going to the food bank without hot water or electricity. but no sanctions for Amazon, Starbucks, Vodafone, Boots, and Co. ... tending to those that donate and go out to vote.

Diabetes uses 10% of NHS drugs bill - BBC News
Diabetes now accounts for 10% of the NHS drugs bill in England, according to official figures. The Health and Social Care Information Centre report shows £869m was spent on drugs for the disease last year. It marks a sharp rise from the £514m being spent on the drugs a decade ago, when they accounted for just 6.6% of the prescriptions budget. The figures include drugs for both type-1 and type-2 diabetes, which affect 2.8 million people in England. It includes insulin, metformin and other anti-diabetic drugs. // &! Russian debtors despair as boom turns to bust - BBC News
Millions of Russians took out loans during the economic boom years, but now they face crippling debts and the law is not on their side, the BBC's Oleg Boldyrev reports. [...] The Russian Central Bank says those chronic debts now total 1tn roubles (£10.7bn; $16.7bn). And that is at least 10% of the total personal debt - 10% which cannot be recovered by the banks. [...] "We were a bit stupid," Elena says. "They told us the minimum payment was 5,000 roubles a month and we paid that every month. But that was just the interest, not the loan itself." [...] [ moral of banks - make new loans (performance) vs prudence (and being a bit more conservative) to deny one person a loan just to see them off at another bank where they will get the loan and that rep getting his bonus, and you not. ] [...] After the good years many Russians are now getting a harsh lesson in capitalism - and inadequate regulations mean there is nothing to soften the blow.

Obese people and drug users who refuse treatment could have benefits cut | Society | The Guardian
A nanny state for those that cost the state (directly, and now), because it fits their message 'only work pays'! what a double standard. what a intellectual dishonesty and cynicism. And again putting it like it is a 'lifestyle choice' being addicted and or obese. That one chose consciously, in order not to 'work.' // if people work, and are overweight, have diabetes, obese, high blood pressure, take statins, runing their liver long-term with alcohol abuse (functioning alcoholic, drug user) etc etc - costing the NHS especially long-term (sick population) - it is ok, but if they don't work. it's not ok. // after all, substance abuse, in majority of cases has a mental health (history) & social environment (nurture) component to it. Much complexity to it. And cutting services to actually help & prevent people going down the route of abuse doesn't help. Hedge funds tell Puerto Rico: lay off teachers and close schools to pay us back | World news | The Guardian
Report commissioned by 34 hedge funds says government had been ‘massively overspending on education’ despite spending only 79% of US average per pupil [...] The group of 34 hedge funds hired former International Monetary Fund (IMF) economists to come up with a solution to Puerto Rico’s debt crisis after the island’s governor declared its $72bn debt “unpayable” – paving the way for bankruptcy. [...] The funds are “distressed debt” specialists, also known as vulture funds [ Heuschrecken], and several have also sought to make money out of crises in Greece and Argentina, the collapse of Lehman Brothers and the near collapse of Co-op Bank in the UK. // // they are implicit in lending money to a low grade borrower and took on the risk for higher interest rates. instead of looking out for long-term productive investment that benefit society, they go for the investment by click from a Bloomberg Panel, to meet their ROI at year end for their clients, promised in their annual letter.

Red Hat Used by NSA Spies, SELinux Possibly Bypassed
Sam Varghese today wrote that "the NSA runs its XKEYSCORE program for the most part on Red Hat Linux servers." The report he sourced said, "The sheer quantity of communications that XKEYSCORE processes, filters and queries is stunning. Around the world, when a person gets online to do anything there's a decent chance that the Internet traffic her device sends and receives is getting collected and processed by one of XKEYSCORE’s hundreds of servers scattered across the globe." They have hundreds of servers collecting over 20 terrabytes of data a day (and that's an old estimate). complicit and impunity - see same in UK with abuse scandals and paedophiles up and down Britain's Society and especially Westminster - and Met Police looking away during recent history till back then during Thatcher's time and maybe even way back even more. What a picture of society and what it means in a persons life to have "power." And also include the Church! Sure, back then paedophiles, rapists and abusers of any kind often got away with it more or less because of the stigma as victim (you brought this on you) and the lack (non existent) of prosecution and support. Dark ages. Dark ages. That is recent history. Just one generation. Thinking about it is abhorring - that these people still shape our life's to some extent.

Sweden’s feminist foreign minister has dared to tell the truth about Saudi Arabia. What happens now concerns us all » The Spectator
You might think of Swedes as upright social democrats, who have never let worries of appearing tedious stand in the way of their righteousness. But that has never been wholly true, and is certainly not true when there is money at stake. [...] No less a figure than His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf himself hauled Wallström in at the weekend to tell her that he wanted a compromise. Saudi Arabia has successfully turned criticism of its brutal version of Islam into an attack on all Muslims, regardless of whether they are Wahhabis or not, and Wallström and her colleagues are clearly unnerved by accusations of Islamophobia. The signs are that she will fold under the pressure, particularly when the rest of liberal Europe shows no interest in supporting her. [...] Finally, and most revealingly in my opinion, the non-affair shows us that the rights of women always come last. [...] an embarrassed and hugely revealing silence. // via http://redd.it/30el3h

BBC News - Virginia eugenics victims compensated for sterilisation
Victims will be paid $25,000 (£16,000) following a legal fight by campaigners. Along with more than 30 other US states, Virginia once operated a sterilisation programme for individuals deemed undesirable or mentally unsound. More than 8,000 Virginians were operated on between the 1920s and 1970s. The state's programme was said to be the model for the Nazi eugenics policies introduced by Adolf Hitler when he aspired to create a master race. Several countries practised forced sterilisation during the 20th Century, including Sweden, Canada and Japan, [... Switzerland, Germany and other European countries until late into 1970's]

As I lay dying - LA Times
"The most powerful organization in the breast cancer universe, Susan G. Komen , has raised $2.5 billion over the last 20 years, much more than many corporations will ever earn. Yet Komen channels only a fraction of those funds into research or systems to help those who are already seriously sick. Most of that money continues to go to a breast cancer “awareness” campaign that is now painfully out of date." Venture capital and the great big Silicon Valley asshole game | PandoDaily
(( via pando.com/2015/02/12/how-silicon-valleys-counterculture-went-corporate-and-ruined-everything/ )) --- This is a complex topic with no real “right” or “wrong.” You have to consider what the job of a VC is. It’s not to give inner city kids a helping hand; it’s not to make mom-and-pop dreams a reality; it’s not to help nice guys. It’s to maximize returns and fund companies that have an outsized chance of creating billion-dollar plus outcomes in a decade or less. There is a certain personality type that frequently builds these companies—a mix of outsized arrogance, steel-eyed determination, and even some element of delusion. Rational thinkers don’t usually think they can upend whole industries. People who get impacted by social pressure will be talked out of an idea long before it comes to fruition.

As the faces of the peer-to-peer economy, Airbnb and Uber’s cultures couldn’t be more different | PandoDaily
AirBnB playing the win-win game. >> Airbnb appears to have taken the approach of investing significantly in creating community and a feeling of partnership, and of disseminating best practices. Along with the community-building exercises, its recently concluded host convention featured a number of sessions on how to be a better provider. Airbnb facilitates host groups for knowledge sharing, integrated into a host application that also embeds hospitality standards and guidelines, as well as standalone meetups for hosts to exchange information. The emphasis on community and connectedness is very visible in the company’s recently initiated “Belong Anywhere” branding strategy. The three co-founders have consistently visited and stayed at the homes of key hosts around the world, an experience that likely builds significant loyalty. << very different to the Rocket Internet clone that Samwer Brother created. &! Listen to sex workers – we can explain what decriminalisation would mean | Niki Adams | Comment is free | theguardian.com
The English Collective of Prostitutes argued that criminalising clients would undermine women’s safety, drive prostitution further underground and sabotage sex workers’ efforts to keep safe by displacing us to remote areas. Others questioned a crackdown on people who are trying to survive in the face of austerity policies which have increased poverty and therefore prostitution. LBGTQ groups called for an end to this “last vestige of Victorian moralism”, asking why some feminists had allied themselves with evangelical Christians who oppose gay marriage, sex outside marriage and abortion. Mactaggart’s justification for attacking “demand” (clients) is that “prostitution is an extreme form of exploitation”. But exploitation is rife in many industries,

Careful what you wish against: Silicon Valley just rolled out a red carpet to government regulation | PandoDaily
I never thought I’d write these words: Sometimes the public markets is the best thing that can happen to a hot company. [...] Today, Uber running a different playbook than even Facebook. First, it has controlled access to liquidity much more than Facebook ever did. But, by contrast, the company’s access to capital has been an exaggeration of Facebook’s already prodigious fundraising path. Uber has wholly embraced the notion of raising gargantuan amounts of money at jaw-dropping late stage valuations as an avenue to put off an IPO, seemingly indefinitely if it wants. That should suit a CEO like Uber’s Travis Kalanick who bristles at anyone telling him how to do his job and hates government regulation. Importantly, Uber is the first unicorn of the mobile-first era. [...] Uber’s investors have exerted no pressure on the Valley darling. [...] Reckless disregard for customers.
