Racism will not be solved by there being more mixed-race children | Nikesh Shukla | Life and style | The Guardian
“Beige Britain” won’t be the utopia we want. It’ll be the same country it always was, but with a significant demographic change. The whole “mixed-race kids ending racism” feeling is a nice thought that doesn’t change anything. It doesn’t look at divisions in the country right now. It doesn’t interrogate problems we have. It doesn’t end inequality. //&! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dI2TqlOA0vo - Alon Ziv, author of the book Breeding Between the Lines - Why Interracial People Are Healthier & More Attractive

Connie Fisher on Make-Up
evolutionary psychology explanation: in more patriarchal societies, women wear less make-up (middle east v western world) make-up is a signal of equality. why do women wear make-up? "women have to show sexiness (attractiveness) to signal fertility. Made in Chelsea's Spencer Matthews took steroids 'to look good in the shower' - BBC Newsbeat
And admits he took them because he "wanted to look as good as possible". He says it was because he wanted to be bigger and stronger while training for the match. Newsbeat recently revealed one in 10 men training in UK gyms struggle with a body anxiety known as "bigorexia", or muscle dysmorphia. It's been compared to anorexia in reverse - where men become obsessed with putting on muscle. Depression, steroid abuse and even suicide are effects of bigorexia.

Jenny Beavan’s Oscars outfit struck a blow for all women | Laura Bates | Opinion | The Guardian
This was not the first stand taken against the reduction of women in the industry to their clothes and jewellery. The past few years have seen Elisabeth Moss give the middle finger to the “mani-cam” at the Golden Globes, Cate Blanchett demand: “Do you do that to the guys?” as a camera panned up and down her body on the red carpet, and a series of women from Reese Witherspoon to Amy Poehler demand that reporters ask them more than questions about their frocks. We’ve also seen the actress and singer Zendaya speak out about racist responses to her dreadlocks at the Oscars, and Bridesmaids star Melissa McCarthy design her own dresses after designers refused to dress her, proving that Hollywood’s incredibly narrow definition of beauty is discriminatory on the basis of size and race. [...] find themselves pitted against each other in excruciating “best dressed” and “worst dressed” lists, the awards season will continue to provide a high-profile, glossy microcosm of wider prejudice.

No safe way to suntan, new NICE guidance warns - BBC News
There is no safe or healthy way to get a tan from sunlight, new guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has warned. The health watchdog's latest guidance also says an existing tan provides little protection against sun exposure. It recommends using at least factor 15 sun cream, with adults urged to use 6-8 teaspoons (35ml) per application. Benefits from building up vitamin D from the sun have to be balanced with the risks of skin cancer, it adds. Many adults in Britain have low levels of vitamin D and the guidance states that some exposure to sunlight can help to build this up. NICE also says it is not possible to get enough vitamin D by sitting next to a closed sunny window, or from sunlight between October and March in the UK. However, experts stopped short of recommending a specific amount of time people should stay out. //&! Hugh Jackman - bit.ly/1Q6wQvP

A Point of View: Does cosmetic surgery really make people feel better about their bodies? - BBC News
In 2002-3, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons carried out 10,700 procedures. Ten years later, they carried out 50,000 procedures of which the most common was breast augmentation. [...] Why are people resorting to cosmetic surgery? There is increasing pressure to look young and beautiful, especially for women, who are still more likely to be judged on appearances, particularly in the workplace. The media is full of makeover programmes glamorising cosmetic surgery and celebrities who look ever more perky. Subliminally and not so subliminally, our culture is changing how humans feel they should look. People believe they will be happier and more successful if they conform more closely to these cultural norms. [...] Pornography is now ubiquitous and must be a big driver of people's dissatisfaction with their bodies. Let me give you an example. Ironically, while the UK has banned female genital mutilation, it is simultaneously having a booming trade in labiaplasty.

Taylor Swift an 'obnoxious Nazi Barbie', writes Camille Paglia | Music | The Guardian
Feminist writer says singer – with her ‘girl squad’ – perpetuates elitism and reminds her of ‘fascist blondes’ of her youth. Camille Paglia has written a scathing critique of Taylor Swift, referring to the singer as an “obnoxious Nazi Barbie” whose “twinkly persona is such a scary flashback to the fascist blondes who ruled the social scene during my youth”. Paglia, known for seminal feminist works such as Sexual Personae, criticised the singer for perpetuating elitism and undermining female empowerment by surrounding herself with a group of girls who were simply “performance props”. Swift is known as the ringleader of a sisterhood of actors, models and singers, such as Selena Gomez, Lena Dunham, Cara Delevingne and Karlie Kloss, who Swift often refers to as her “girl squad”. Many joined the singer on stage during her tour for her latest album, 1989. Paglia, 68, condemned this as “exhibitionist overkill” by the singer.

From social media to the catwalk, is fantasy beauty failing young women? | Life and style | The Guardian
The world of vloggers and YouTubers has created a perverse, homogenised “beauty” with no diversity or reality. Jane Cunningham, journalist [...] The concept of appearance as a commodity to be valued has filtered from Hollywood to family homes across the UK. A 2013 attitudes survey by the Guide Association finding that 87% of girls aged 11-21 believe women are judged more on their appearance than their ability. The dissatisfaction resulting from the oft-perpetuated narrow vision of a beauty ideal can lead to low self-esteem – and worse. Jane Cunningham, the journalist behind Britishbeautyblogger.com, says young girls come to her in tears, feeling hopeless and helpless, unable to reconcile their own appearance with what they believe to be beautiful.

One-fifth of youngsters suffer from 'high anxiety' - BBC News
The study looked at the wellbeing and mental health of 7.5 million young people in the UK aged 16 to 24. [...] The figures also show a rising proportion of young people who felt dissatisfied with their health. [...] The figures from the ONS show a picture of a growing number of young people who are satisfied with their lives - but with a persistent minority reporting unhappiness or suffering from anxiety. [...] Campus anxiety [...] But in terms of anxiety, 18% report high levels of anxiety and almost 16% have "medium" levels of anxiety. In a separate measure, there are almost 21% of young people with "evidence indicating depression or anxiety". And young people's perceptions of their own physical health seemed to be progressively more negative, with more expressing dissatisfaction and fewer feeling satisfied. [F]igures for the wellbeing of younger children which showed about one in eight youngsters between the ages of 10 and 15 reported symptoms of mental ill-health.

30 stone at 13: meet the obese teenagers going under the knife | Society | The Guardian
More than 8,000 patients had weight-loss surgery in 2012-13, according to NHS figures – a 30-fold increase in just over a decade. They were not only middle-aged and long-term obese, but teenagers and young people, too: 570 under-25s had surgery between 2010 and 2013, according to the UK National Bariatric Surgery Registry, and nearly 40% of these were “super obese”. Despite healthy eating edicts and government campaigns, they had, in their short lives, already advanced through the obesity categories – obese, severely obese, morbidly obese – and now, at super obese, were more than twice the weight they should be.

Doctors call for new tax on sugary food and drinks - BBC News
Doctors have called for the introduction of a tax on sugary food and drinks to tackle what they describe as an "obesity epidemic". The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh warned that being overweight may now be considered "the norm". It claimed a tax would help fund the "spiralling" healthcare costs associated with the problem. The British Soft Drinks Association (BSDA) insisted that the case is "not compelling". It cited research which suggested a 20% tax would save just four calories per day. Liverpool University chair of clinical epidemiology, Simon Capewell, is due to speak at a conference on the issue in Edinburgh later, entitled: "Obesity: A 21st Century Epidemic". BBC - Future - The surprising downsides of being drop dead gorgeous
if beauty pays in most circumstances, there are still situations where it can backfire. While attractive men may be considered better leaders, for instance, implicit sexist prejudices can work against attractive women, making them less likely to be hired for high-level jobs that require authority. [...] We tend to link good looks to health, meaning that illnesses are often taken less seriously when they affect the good-looking. When treating people for pain, for instance, doctors tend to take less care over the more attractive people. [...] “If you are obsessing about attractiveness, it may alter your experience and interactions,” she says. It’s a cliche, but no amount of beauty can make up for a bad personality. As the writer Dorothy Parker put it so elegantly: “Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes clean to the bone.”

BBC Radio 5 live - In Short, Teenager: 'Dangerous' selfie habit caused mental illness
A teenager who became addicted to taking selfies says it is important people are educated about how "dangerous" the habit can be. Danny Bowman began taking up to 70 selfies a day aged 14 to "impress girls" but his addiction "got out of hand". His habit became a "full-blown mental illness," and at worst he refused to leave the house for six months. After receiving hospital treatment for Body Dysmorphic Disorder, Danny, now 19, said: "You zoom into every flaw... if I had a spot, I didn't used to go out of the house." "Young people are starting to realise that in this selfie age, it can be quite dangerous," he said.

BBC News - Victims of a craze for cosmetic surgery
Part of the problem is that plastic surgery is so lucrative that unqualified doctors have been drawn in - or rather doctors qualified in other areas of quite different medicine. It's alleged that procedures have been done by what are called "ghost doctors". In one court case, it's claimed that the advertised doctor slipped out of the operating room once the patient was under the anaesthetic and the job was then botched by the replacement surgeon. On top of that, it's emerged that some before-and-after photos have had a bit of surgery themselves - surgery of the Photoshop variety. The upshot is that the Korean Association of Plastic Surgeons has called for tighter rules for doctors and for advertisers. They fear that the bad publicity is damaging the reputation of an industry which is largely well-run. But they're fighting against the tide. Plastic surgery is very profitable, even with prices that undercut the US and Europe.

21 Women on the Dumbest Things They’ve Bought -- The Cut
“I have this really bad habit of thinking that because I am a ‘professional woman,’ I need all of this stuff to make me really BE that woman. Like, I will justify the constant purchase of expensive haircuts, manicures, leather laptop cases, blazers, and conservative heels with ‘this is basically a business expense.’ Except that I cannot write those expenses off, and now I have like ten more ‘work purses’ than I would ever need.” —Sarah, 28 [...] “First, I got into waxing for a while and maintaining that shit really adds up. [...] “Trendy clothes. [...] When I moved to New York, I had this really fucking dumb Carrie Bradshaw ideal of how I should dress and act. I thought that it was normal to spend a bunch of money on trendy shoes, [...] My brain can’t accept that it will never own Manolos if I also want to own a home someday.” [...] I spend money on makeup, blowouts, and nail art, in huge part for the Instagram likes. BBC Radio 4 - A History of Ideas, Historian Simon Schaffer on Beauty and Evolution, Feminine Beauty: A social construct?
Feminine Beauty: A social construct? // The French existentialist writer Simone de Beauvoir famously declares in her book The Second Sex that a woman isn’t born a woman, rather she becomes one. She means by this that there is no way women have to be, no given femininity, no ideal to which all women should conform. Simone de Beauvoir suggests that resistance to male stereotypes of beauty can mean greater equality. Voiced by Harry Shearer. BBC News - Selfie science: Taking the perfect snap
The selfie has arguably become the greatest photographic trend of our time. Why are we so interested in taking and sharing selfies and how does observing an image of yourself differ from observing a picture of someone else, asks University College London neuroscientist James Kilner. [...] Given that we have a poor representation of what we look like, this is perhaps unsurprising. What is surprising is that people systematically choose images that have been digitally altered to make the person appear more attractive. In other words, we have an image of ourselves that tends to be younger and more attractive than we actually are. This might in part explain our obsession with selfies. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-magazine-monitor-25763704
