NHS budget control 'will require staff cuts'
It says the government should be honest about NHS spending plans at a time when patient demand is rising. [...] The NHS leadership is set to unveil plans to get hospitals and other trusts to stick to agreed spending limits. In the last financial year, trusts ran up a collective deficit of £2.4bn - and the aim is to cut that figure significantly. [...] "It is no longer credible to argue that the NHS can continue to meet increasing demand for services, deliver current standards of care and stay within its budget. This is widely understood within the NHS and now needs to be debated with the public. "There are no easy choices, but it would be disastrous to adopt a mindset that fails to acknowledge the serious state of the NHS in England today." //&! bbc.in/29mkr7G - An overspend would be a serious breach of Whitehall protocol and lead to senior officials being hauled over the coals by the National Audit Office.

Superbugs are on track to kill 10 million people by 2050 if things don’t change—fast
[under reported ] Today, 23,000 Americans die each year from infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Across the world, the estimated annual mortality rate is 700,000. If these trends continue, by 2050, 10 million people globally will die each year, as the potent diseases of previous centuries return to their old force, according to the Review on Antimicrobial Resistance. In 2012, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported an estimated 450,000 new cases of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. The emergence of multiple drug-resistant pneumonia and E. coli bacteria strains are predicted to contribute significantly to increased mortalities due to their ability to spread rapidly through populations.

The Truth About Caitlyn Jenner’s Politics (time.com)
After all, many Americans still see transgender people as strange or illegitimate. So it wouldn’t surprise me if interest in this story is partly driven by a desire to see the world’s most famous transgender person being taken down by her own community. Caitlyn Jenner has positioned herself as a representative or “ambassador” of trans communities, so I can understand why trans people object or take issue when her views fail to accurately reflect or support those communities. But when people who are unconcerned with transgender rights themselves start piling on, quite frankly, I am suspicious.

Magistrate sacked for opposing same-sex adoption is suspended by NHS
Richard Page suspended as non-executive director by Kent and Medway trust after being struck off from bench [...] Richard Page, who sat on the family bench in Kent, was struck off after telling the BBC in March 2015: “My responsibility as a magistrate, as I saw it, was to do what I considered best for the child, and my feeling was therefore that it would be better if it was a man and woman who were the adopted parents.”

Andrew Ling, chairman of the Kent and Medway NHS and social care partnership trust (KMPT), has written to the NHS Trust Development Authority (TDA) requesting the suspension of the 69-year-old.

Page, who has worked in the field of mental health for 20 years, said about his suspension: “Last week, the prime minister distributed an Easter video in which he commended Christians and the church for their vital role in society, stating that we are a Christian country and should be proud of it.

It's Time To Stop Apologizing For Tina Fey - BuzzFeed News
[ more entertainment, don't make people think, don't try to make them think ... in cinema people uhhhmmmming ] But good books do not always make good movies — especially since the transformation from book to screen, at least in Hollywood’s hands, generally subtracts instead of adds nuance. [...] The most successful films are documentaries, which don’t face the inherent problem of casting actors, and white actors in particular, to play “bad guys” of different races, and high farces: films like Dr. Strangelove, M*A*S*H, and In the Loop that expand and eviscerate the inherent, if hidden, ridiculousness of modern war. [...] [ film has only ] cheap tricks, not the lacerating humor of effective farce. [...] women’s place in society, and sexual desirability as an alternately empowering and infantilizing experience. [...] George Alliott, the lawyer representing Conservative Way Forward (CWF), the thinktank where Elliott Johnson worked until he was made redundant a month before his death, told the hearing that if the scope of the inquest was broadened it would lead to further questions being asked about Elliott’s sexuality and wellbeing. Addressing the coroner, Tom Osborne, Alliott said: “If this scope is to widen, you are going to have to conclude that it will need to involve references to Elliott’s mental health records and his sexuality.” [ wasn't there just a high court decision that mental health records are not allowed in sexual assault/rape cases (ie to deface victim) ]

Sugary drinks tax 'would stop millions becoming obese' - BBC News

The director general of the British Soft Drinks Association, Gavin Partington, said: "The hypothetical claims made in this modelling study run contrary to real-world evidence. "In fact, the soft drinks tax in Mexico has reduced average calorie intake by six calories per person per day, with no evidence that it has reduced levels of obesity." The upsetting reality of modern day poverty
My food budget? About £45 a week. [...] You see, to Jamie Oliver, a £20 shoulder of lamb is "cheap", because it can do two meals and it’s not the leg, so costs less per kilo. Two meals, Jamie? For 20 bloody quid, I want at least four meals. It’s a sad day when I get angry at Jamie Oliver for being a pretentious, arrogant prick. [...] I can’t afford to smoke. I don’t know many people who can. I have bars of soap next to my sinks and I am able to use them to good effect. I am not dirty. I am relatively poor. There is a difference. [...] The reality is eating plain boiled rice and pretending to like it, so the kids don’t know there’s no other food except for what is on their plates. [...] The reality of poverty is the shame of always having to say, “Sorry, I can’t afford it.” [...] I’ll make you a coffee, but only if you don’t have sugar – that’s a luxury we only buy in if we’re going to make a cake.

The Mexicans dying for a fizzy drink - BBC News
Mexicans consume more carbonated drinks per person than any other nation, and the country has one of the world's highest rates of childhood obesity. Two years ago the government introduced a tax on sugary drinks - but is it working? [...] So what do the big US brands make of Mexico's approach? Hank Cardello of the Obesity Solutions Initiative, an industry-funded lobby group in Washington DC, cracks open a can of diet ginger ale and tells us. "You have to look at ways of expanding the tool kit of solutions," he says. "The typical regulatory tool kit is tax, ban, limit, constrain - those kinds of anti-growth words, if you would. They're anathema to what the companies have to do. "We should ban the word 'should'. It's like a parent talking to a child. 'You should eat better, you should do this.' UK is 'vulnerable' to next Ebola outbreak - BBC News
"We are also concerned that, in the unlikely but possible event of a domestic outbreak, the UK lacks the capability to go further and manufacture enough vaccines to vaccinate UK citizens in an emergency. "Existing facilities are degraded and new plants will take years to build, leaving the UK in a vulnerable position." The concern is that should a disease such as Ebola spread around the world then countries would look after their own interests first, making it hard for the UK to get hold of vaccines. Prof Adrian Hill, who was involved in trialling Ebola vaccines at Oxford University, described the lack of vaccine manufacturing as a "national security issue". Those concerns were echoed by the chief medical officer, Prof Dame Sally Davies, who told the committee that "we are looking at how we can try and attract companies back".

Organ donations vetoed by hundreds of bereaved families - BBC News
Bereaved families have blocked the donation of organs from 547 UK registered donors since 2010 - about one in seven cases, figures show. [...] Families can still veto that consent but must provide reasons in writing. NHSBT expects the change to lead to a 9% rise in donors. It said the 547 blocked donors would have provided organs for 1,200 patients. There are currently 6,578 people waiting for transplants in the UK. [...] The consequence of refusal is that people die as a result - that is the unfortunate reality of the situation

Organ donation bill 'unhelpful and potentially damaging' - BBC News
[ other countries who have an opt-out system implemented have seen their transplant rates rise ] A bill currently going through the assembly proposes that everyone will be on the organ donation register unless they opt out. But some of Northern Ireland's most senior clinicians have been warning Stormont's health committee that the bill is unhelpful and potentially damaging. Dr Paul Glover, the regional clinical lead on organ donation, said he believes the bill "in isolation" will fail. "It will have to be underpinned by education," he said. "We have to have society talking about organ donations, talking to family, making their wishes known. Weather records: December was 'wettest month for UK' - BBC News
Storms propelled by the jet stream were mainly to blame, it says, with contributions from the El Nino weather phenomenon and man-made climate change. December was something of a freak month, it acknowledges. Storm Frank: What have we done to make the flooding worse? - BBC News
[Strom Eva, Desmond, Frank, ... building code has to be reviewed. new buildings have to be raised, first floor ~1m above ground. no basement. also, roofs have to resist gale winds easily ] Policy-makers are often keen to see brownfield land used for residential development, but these areas are often most vulnerable to flooding. Demand from buyers has fuelled this growth, too. You might assume that there would be huge drops in property prices after highly publicised floods. But in places like Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, and Cockermouth, Cumbria, which experienced heavy flooding in 2007 and 2009 respectively, prices have remained largely unaffected in the long run. [...] "We've tended to straighten rivers, to canalise them, to embank them and all that rushes the water down to the nearby urban pinch point," explains environmentalist and writer George Monbiot, adding that the flow of water should be slowed down and the rivers lengthened instead.

'Grief and anxiety are not mental illnesses' - BBC News
Psychiatric diagnoses are not only scientifically invalid, they are harmful too. The language of illness implies that the roots of such emotional distress lie in abnormalities in our brain and biology, usually known as "chemical imbalances". This leads us to be blind to the social and psychological causes of distress. More importantly, we tend to prescribe medical solutions - anti-depressants and anti-psychotic medication - despite significant side-effects and poor evidence of their effectiveness. This is wrong. We should not be diagnosing many more people with meaningless "mental illnesses", telling them these stem from brain abnormalities, and prescribing medication.

Most of extra £3.8bn NHS funds already spent, says expert | Society | The Guardian
Much of the extra £3.8bn allocated to the NHS in George Osborne’s autumn statement has effectively already been spent, a leading health expert had said. John Appleby, chief economist at the King’s Fund, backed Labour claims that NHS trust deficits and extra pension costs mean very little of the extra money promised for 2016-17 will be available for better care. He said the NHS was in a weaker position now than five years ago and faced a real challenge over the rest of this parliament. Labour released figures that it said showed Osborne’s health spending boost was “more spin than substance” because £2.2bn would be swallowed up covering trust deficits and another £1.1bn would have to fund extra pension costs. 'Almost too late': fears of global superbug crisis in wake of antibiotic misuse | Society | The Guardian
Despite European Union regulations aiming to cut back on the unnecessary use of antibiotics, Dr Brown believes it will take more than just legislation to tackle the superbug crisis. Market forces will need to be compelled to cut usage, perhaps when prompted by a shift in public opinion, he said. “Those with a vested interest find ways around legislation. So, in addition to public policy we will need also the power of market forces,” he added. “When the public start demanding meat that has not seen antibiotics - because they understand that the meat may contain antibiotic resistant bacteria - only then will real progress be made. We need education about the threat.”

Bacteria that resist 'last antibiotic' found in UK - BBC News
[ over 80% of antibiotic use - livestock farming. also use of colistin. self-regulated. ] Bacteria that resist the most common antibiotic of last resort - colistin - have been discovered in the UK. Officials say the threat to human health is low, but is under ongoing review. Scientists warned the world was on the cusp of a post-antibiotic era when such resistance was discovered in China last month. Now checks have discovered the same resistance on three farms and in samples of human infections. [...] Colistin-resistance was discovered in fifteen of them, including samples of Salmonella and E. Coli. [...] The DNA that gives bacteria resistance to colistin - the mcr-1 gene - can spread rapidly between species. The concern is that colistin-resistance will now find its way into other superbugs to create infections that doctors cannot treat. //&! youtu.be/M2xZBngTIas //&! bit.ly/1O5oHWa //&! bit.ly/1MW3FYW //&! bbc.in/1PkB6G9 //&! 50-50 chance to salvage situation - bit.ly/1Zmx8Qg

Patients less satisfied by GPs who refuse antibiotics - BBC News
[ quick fix society. rather pop a pill than not eat bacon for breakfast. show how much GP's have to change set-up and be incentivised 2 help people change. ] The study, published in the British Journal of General Practice, compared the prescribing rates of more than 95% of all GP surgeries in England to a survey of patient satisfaction. Those satisfaction scores are used to determine how much GPs get paid. Patients' satisfaction rose when they were listened to or carefully examined. A study last year warned that up to half of all prescriptions of antibiotics could be inappropriate - given to patients suffering coughs, colds, sore throats and the flu - none of which can be treated with antibiotics. The overuse of antibiotics has led to antibiotic resistance, when bacteria and infections can no longer be killed off or treated with strong drugs. In this study, doctors who prescribed 25% fewer antibiotics saw a modest reduction in patient satisfaction with them or with their surgery.

We should do God, says report into religion in public life - BBC News
"We don't do God," as Tony Blair's spin doctor Alastair Campbell famously told an interviewer wishing to inquire further about the then prime minister's Christian faith. But according to a report published today, we urgently need to do God - or rather, as a nation, we need to understand religion and belief much better as a driving force within societies across the world, in order to deal with its impact at home. Here, the decrease in mainstream Christianity and the growth of minority religions are raising questions about national identity (what does it mean to be British today?) and how we can live together and accommodate difference peacefully and cohesively, balancing each other's freedoms and rights. [...] Identity anxiety [ << symptom of crony capitalism and inequality and unrechtsstaat ]

New medicines 'should prevent not just treat disease' - BBC News
Leading doctors say the NHS must prepare for much greater use of medicines to prevent rather than just treat disease. [...] The future of healthcare is a healthier lifestyle. [<< Professor Carl Heneghan from the Oxford University Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine,] [...] "Having a real impact on reducing demand and improving quality of care in the NHS will only happen when the root cause of lifestyle-driven disease is tackled head on // a 50% health tax on animal products and processed food (high in fat, salt, sugar), alcohol, tobacco products (+100% tax) - with plan to progressively increase tax further and further on every other year; which subsidises vegan school meals, NHS, care system, and fruit and veg go tax reduced.

'Kylie Jenner, wow, being in a wheelchair is so fun and fashionable!' - BBC News
RE: Kylie Jenner wheelchair shitstorm Sometimes you have to ask, do they think only twice about posting selfies on Instagram? On the other hand you also have to feel somewhat sorry for people like Kylie Jenner because they have so little to none perspective and no real empathy, compassion nor mindfulness.

James Dawson criticises parents who attacked his LGBT guide for children | Books | The Guardian
“In 2015, when you read of people comparing gay people to paedophiles you just despair,” “I always think, as a community, we’ve come so far and achieved so much, but then you read something like that and realise there is still such small-mindedness and hatred left to contend with.” Dawson, who recently came out as transgender, pointed to the young LGBT people of Alaska “and the message they’re receiving from this furore: they must be so terrified to come out if this is the reaction they think they’ll get”. [...] Libraries have always been the natural sanctuary of marginalised young people and long may they remain open

Rules banning gay and bisexual men from giving blood to be reviewed | Politics | The Guardian
A spokesperson for the gay rights campaign group Stonewall said: “We want a donation system that is fair and based on up-to-date medical evidence. Currently gay and bi people cannot give blood if they have had sex in the past 12 months, regardless of whether they used protection. Yet straight people who may have had unprotected sex can donate. “These current rules are clearly unfair and we want to see people asked similar questions, irrespective of their sexual orientation, to accurately assess the risk of infection. Screening all donors by sexual behaviour rather than by sexual orientation would increase blood stocks in times of shortage and create a safer supply by giving a more accurate, non-discriminatory assessment.”

Is there a danger to environmental jargon? - BBC News
