In our focus on the digital, have we lost our sense of what being human means? | Genevieve Bell | Opinion | The Guardian
MAKE OUR OWN FUTURE - And of course, there are bigger questions about the role of technology more broadly. In making the machines smarter, we have sacrificed a little something of ourselves – we run the risk of being reduced to data and the decisions it drives. I believe we are more than data, more than just intelligence. I worry that, in our current focus on the digital, we have lost some of our agency and some of our sense of what being human might mean. But I don’t believe this is inevitable or irreversible.

Does The Myth of Meritocracy show us how to alleviate inequality?
No debate about social mobility is complete without reference to the supposedly halcyon days of the 1950s and 1960s. The class fluidity of those decades, however, was not the result of professions becoming more meritocratic. It was caused by an unprecedented rise in the number of middle-class jobs: there was more room at the top. [...] Bloodworth writes that 21st-century society is characterised by a dwindling of professional jobs and more people slipping downwards: there is “more room at the bottom”. [...] Globalisation has created what the economist Robert H Frank calls “winner-takes-all” markets

The Growth Trap
[ growing for growth sake! vs growing in a world/area that is not conducive to grow ] When Twitter went public in 2013, its stock soared and its value jumped to $25 billion. Its founders and early investors got rich. But since then, the company has been considered a failure, despite the fact that it boasts 320 million active users, because it's not growing fast enough. Douglas Rushkoff, author of "Throwing Rocks at the Google Bus: How Growth Became the Enemy of Prosperity," talks to Steve Paikin about why he sees the push for more growth as dangerous. // true capitalists (shareholder, crony, greedy) w/o self-regulation or governance extract all the value there is to extract and then leave, dispersing it to the few who already have [...] WE MUST REWRITE THE RULES OF THE GROWTH GAME ITSELF! Why Everyone Must Get Ready For The 4th Industrial Revolution
For example, as automation increases, computers and machines will replace workers across a vast spectrum of industries, from drivers to accountants and estate agents to insurance agents. By one estimate, as many as 47 percent of U.S. jobs are at risk from automation. Many experts suggest that the fourth industrial revolution will benefit the rich much more than the poor, especially as low-skill, low-wage jobs disappear in favor of automation.

But this isn’t new. Historically, industrial revolutions have always begun with greater inequality followed by periods of political and institutional change. The industrial revolution that began at the beginning of the 19th century originally led to a huge polarization of wealth and power, before being followed by nearly 100 years of change including the spread of democracy, trade unions, progressive taxation and the development of social safety nets.

One of the highest levels of sugar is found in Old Jamaica Ginger Beer. Its Extra Fiery drink has 15.7g - or just under four teaspoons - of sugar per 100ml. The recommended maximum daily sugar intake for someone over the age of 11 is 30g a day, or 7.5 teaspoons.
Germany train crash: Human error to blame, says prosecutor - BBC News
Human error by a train controller was to blame for a crash in Bavaria, Germany, last week that killed 11 people, prosecutors said. Dozens more were injured after two commuter trains collided on a single-track stretch of railway. An area controller opened the track to the two trains and tried to warn the drivers, according to the prosecutors. The man, a 39-year-old, is likely to be charged with involuntary manslaughter and could face five years in jail. "If he had complied with the rules... there would have been no collision," said Chief Prosecutor Wolfgang Giese.

Hawking: Humans at risk of lethal 'own goal' - BBC News
Humanity is at risk from a series of dangers of our own making, according to Prof Stephen Hawking. Nuclear war, global warming and genetically-engineered viruses are among the scenarios which he singles out. And he says that further progress in science and technology will create "new ways things can go wrong". Prof Hawking is giving this year's BBC Reith Lectures, which explore research into black holes, and his warning came in answer to audience questions. He says that assuming humanity eventually establishes colonies on other worlds, it will be able to survive. "Although the chance of a disaster to planet Earth in a given year may be quite low, it adds up over time, and becomes a near certainty in the next thousand or ten thousand years. [...] But he also said that future generations of researchers should be aware of how scientific and technological progress is changing the world, and to help the wider public understand it. //&! bit.ly/1RwS7yA

Google Just Open Sourced TensorFlow, Its Artificial Intelligence Engine | WIRED
It’s not selling access to its deep learning engine. It’s open sourcing that engine, freely sharing the underlying code with the world at large. This software is called TensorFlow, and in literally giving the technology away, Google believes it can accelerate the evolution of AI. Through open source, outsiders can help improve on Google’s technology and, yes, return these improvements back to Google. “What we’re hoping is that the community adopts this as a good way of expressing machine learning algorithms of lots of different types, and also contributes to building and improving [TensorFlow] in lots of different and interesting ways,” says Jeff Dean, one of Google’s most important engineers and a key player in the rise of its deep learning tech.

Facebook Built a ‘Personal Assistant’ Inside Messenger | Re/code
Facebook has a new, A.I.-powered Siri-like assistant tool in Messenger. It's called "M," and it's the company's latest effort in a battle with Google, Uber and others to be the artificial intelligence leader in Silicon Valley. // FB got AI lab in France, got money to invest, to diversify from other Messaging platforms - tcrn.ch/1N1rTSF &! tcrn.ch/1JCfs8Q --- can productise it! your personal assistant, for shopping - convenience - no clicking, not tapping, - M takes care of buying that item you saw in your stream. --- also keeps people inside Facebook! instead of leading them out to the shopping site/product site/... --- also expanding the category/vertical of the messenger you use. --- // // &! http://www.theverge.com/2015/5/28/8677147/google-now-on-tap-announced // &! tcrn.ch/1idSz5R

Will Advances in Technology Create a Jobless Future? | MIT Technology Review
Who Will Own the Robots? - We’re in the midst of a jobs crisis, and rapid advances in AI and other technologies may be one culprit. Nuclear 'Command And Control': A History Of False Alarms And Near Catastrophes : NPR
Mankind is a lot better at creating complex technological systems than at controlling them, // "When it comes to nuclear command and control, anything less than perfection is unacceptable because of how devastatingly powerful these weapons are," [...] His new book, Command and Control: Nuclear Weapons, the Damascus Accident, and the Illusion of Safety, is a critical look at the history of the nation's nuclear weapons systems — and a terrifying account of the fires, explosions, false attack alerts and accidentally dropped bombs that plagued America's military throughout the Cold War. Do You Trust Larry Page? - Stratechery by Ben Thompson
Given the fact that Alphabet née Google is the second most valuable enterprise in the world, it’s striking to consider Larry Page’s 2014 assessment of the company he co-founded with Sergey Brin: I think we’ve not succeeded as much as we’d like. [...] Even Google’s famously far-reaching mission statement, to “organise the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful”, is not big enough for what he now has in mind. The aim: to use the money that is spouting from its search advertising business to stake out positions in boom industries of the future, from biotech to robotics. [...] Googles non-social approach to advertising vs Facebook and everyone else ] [ ad world begins finally to shift away from TV & other legacy forms & FB/Google are main beneficiaries coming years of changing ad spend ] [ Page/Brin want 2 lead the org 2 a new frontier. A new Google Search. &they think they a near it, ie self-driving car, that they think the timing is right NOW ]

Empire of the geeks | The Economist
Silicon Valley should be celebrated. But its insularity risks a backlash [...] Critics are often from industries wanting to protect their privileges; the geeks’ aggressive behaviour is sometimes part of the creative destruction that leads to progress. But that is not the only source of anger. Silicon Valley also dominates markets, sucks out the value contained in personal data, and erects business models that make money partly by avoiding taxes. There is a risk that global consumers will feel exploited and that the effects of a shrinking tax base will infuriate voters. If the perception takes root that enormous profits from exploiting data and avoiding taxes are crystallised in the fortunes of a few people living on a patch of ground near San Francisco, then there will be a backlash." // recent emergence of marketplace for X and gig platform for X - 1099 Economy etc etc, making money with our data - Facebook.

The Future of Artificial Intelligence - Up Next - YouTube
Back in the 1990s, Jeffrey Hawkins became both rich and famous when he invented the Palm Pilot—a device that in no small way ushered in a whole new era of mobile computing. These days, though, he’s on a far more ambitious mission. His goal: to build a machine that can think and reason on its own by mimicking the workings of the human brain. In this edition of Up Next, Hawkins opines on the both risks and rewards of artificial intelligence. Series: "Up Next: Perspectives on the Future of Everything" [5/2015] // by 2040 there will be no jobs a robot can't do. *Lead of Carnegie Mellon Robotics. // &!
