Theresa May must take £115bn hint from Kraft Heinz's failed Unilever bid | Business | The Guardian
Warren Buffett and 3G were apparently surprised at hostility from Unilever’s board – but PM must use this bid as cue to form proper policy on takeovers [...] Kraft’s crew of billionaires should get out more. Did they miss the debates that have raged over rootless global companies, asset-stripping deals and the UK’s open-doors policy on takeovers? Hostility was predictable and justified.

Unilever’s board was always likely to reject the chance to be bought by a financier-led firm in search of another target for its job-cutting formula. [...] If Buffett and Jorge Paulo Lemann, 3G’s co-founder, couldn’t see outrage in the offing, they were astonishingly naive.

The Growth Trap
[ growing for growth sake! vs growing in a world/area that is not conducive to grow ] When Twitter went public in 2013, its stock soared and its value jumped to $25 billion. Its founders and early investors got rich. But since then, the company has been considered a failure, despite the fact that it boasts 320 million active users, because it's not growing fast enough. Douglas Rushkoff, author of "Throwing Rocks at the Google Bus: How Growth Became the Enemy of Prosperity," talks to Steve Paikin about why he sees the push for more growth as dangerous. // true capitalists (shareholder, crony, greedy) w/o self-regulation or governance extract all the value there is to extract and then leave, dispersing it to the few who already have [...] WE MUST REWRITE THE RULES OF THE GROWTH GAME ITSELF!

General Electric could cut hundreds of UK jobs | Business | The Guardian
Approximately 6,500 jobs are at risk across Europe, including more than 600 in the UK, as the US industrial company General Electric begins to cut costs after its takeover of the power operations of the French company Alstom. The cuts are taking place even though GE pledged to create 1,000 jobs in France when the deal was completed in November. About 765 jobs are expected be lost in France and 1,700 in Germany as the company, which employs 100,000 in Europe, begins a consultation with unions. The jobs at risk in the UK amount to about 3% of the 22,000-member workforce. Jeffrey Immelt, the longstanding chief executive of GE, met the French president, François Hollande, and appeared before the French National Assembly to win support for the deal, the largest undertaken by the US company.

European Parliament rejects amendments protecting net neutrality | The Verge
The new legislation allows the creation of internet fast lanes for "specialized services" and lets ISPs offer so-called "zero-rating" products — i.e. apps and services that don't count toward monthly data allowances — without restrictions. Critics of the legislation say that the latter loophole will allow big internet companies to favor certain services in commercial deals. (For example, an ISP could agree with Apple to make Apple Music "zero-rated," leaving rival music streaming services at a disadvantage.)

Bumper payouts for housebuilding executives as market booms | Business | The Guardian
Two of Britain’s largest housebuilders, Berkeley Group and Persimmon, could hand out about £1bn to their top executives and managers in pay and bonuses over the next six years, boosted by strong UK house prices and government-subsidies for home-buyers. Heads-up, Google: Fighting EU Is Useless - Bloomberg View
That approach was part of a charm offensive. Last year, Google doubled its EU lobbying budget to 3.5 million euros ($3.9 million), according to anti-corruption group Transparency International's Integritywatch.eu site, which aggregates information from official EU disclosures. That isn't much less than Deutsche Bank or ExxonMobil is spending. According to data on the same site, Google has held more meetings with EU officials than any other company since last November -- 32 in all, although only one of these officially had to do with the antitrust case, which has developed since 2010. "We want to do a better job of listening to Europe's concerns and explaining how our business works with Europe," the company said of these efforts.

Tesco’s fall tells a wider story about our failing capitalism | Will Hutton | Comment is free | The Guardian
The supermarket giant has not been alone is being organised as a profit machine dedicated to shareholders, not customers. [...] Run a country in the interests of the top 0.1% and sooner or later something gives. For the past decade, Tesco, like almost every other British plc, has been organised as a profit machine, a company whose focus transmuted from serving customers and building a company to serving shareholders and driving up directors’ pay. [...] [ Aldi & Lidl ] are privately owned businesses that think long term and whose business purpose, enshrined by the owners, is to focus on a very narrow range of goods they can sell at high volumes and thus price incredibly keenly. Samsung unveils 2.5-inch 16TB SSD | Hacker News
In the HDD market there are actually just two companies: WD and Seagate. There are other brands (Toshiba, HGST) but these are not completely independent (HGST is owned by WD, Toshiba still exists mostly because WD feeds it with technology whenever they are threatened by anti-monopoly rulings, so they can say competition still exists). In the SSD market there are lots of brands, but only a few flash chip makers - so it's the same lack of competition but better hidden to the consumer. [...] One thing about HDDs is that the marginal cost to the manufacturer is basically constant regardless of size. It costs them just over $100 per drive to make a drive. The cost of making 6 or 10TB drives is all in the R&D. Large cloud providers buy drives in such large volumes that they get access to pricing that normal people don't which is why they can provide things like Youtube, S3 and Glacier without going broke. [...] Not just storage. If you go backwards through the supply chains, ...

Google’s $6 Billion Miscalculation on the EU - Bloomberg Business
via https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10021018 // Google declined to make its executives available for on-the-record interviews, but several concede that the company was caught off guard by the intensity of European criticism, in large part because of its broad popularity with users. Google is so relied upon that many people casually assert that the most prevalent search term on rival Bing is, in fact, “Google.” (Microsoft declines to confirm this.) [...] The more Europeans rely on Google, however, the more they’ve come to fear it, making it an easy target for politicians. Mozilla CEO Sends Angry Open Letter To Microsoft Over Changing Windows 10 Browser Defaults | TechCrunch
With Edge in Windows 10, Microsoft has finally delivered a capable browser to replace the aging Internet Explorer. Microsoft likes Windows 10 so much, it makes Edge the default browser in Windows 10, even when you’re updating from a system that previously used Chrome or Firefox as the default. [...] Unsurprisingly, Mozilla is not amused and its CEO Chris Beard today wrote an open letter to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella to complain that the company is taking away its users’ choices and ignored Mozilla’s calls for keeping the default during the upgrade process. Joseph Stiglitz: It’s Time to Get Radical on Inequality - YouTube
Nobel laureate Stiglitz, author of The Price of Inequality and The Great Divide, studies the forces driving inequality and what is at stake if it continues. In his view, bad economic thinking deserves part of the blame — fanciful ideas like trickle-down and the notion that economists should try to increase the size of the economic pie and let the politicians worry about distribution. Robert Reich on Uber's business practices
Today Uber staged a protest outside New York City Hall against a bill to limit the issuance of new for-hire car licenses (about 60 people showed up for the rally, most of them Uber employees). Meanwhile, according to Bloomberg Business, Uber is still losing money. So what happens if, after driving most traditional taxis out of business, Uber goes under? Or after driving out the competition, it has the market to itself and starts raising its prices? Is Spotify doomed because of Apple Music? No — Spotify’s been doomed from the start | PandoDaily
Spotify is really the only legitimate competitor left. But its fate, like that of every streaming music service, is also subject to forces outside of its control — forces that are guided by the three-headed hydra of Warner, Universal, and Sony. [...] Although Apple Music and Spotify’s paid tier offer perks that free subscriptions do not — namely, full mobile access and no ads between songs — the majority of users will not pay for something they can basically get for free, even if they miss out on a handful of features. The percentage of Spotify users who pay for the service bears this out, having held steady for years at only 25%. And this trend shows no sign of abating — according to the most recent figures, paid users as a percentage of the whole crept up a hair but still sits at only 26.7%. Apple reportedly plays dirty to kill Spotify’s free tier — and I hope it gets away with it | PandoDaily
[ Apple's Might. History Rhymes. ] There’s a report out that Apple is pushing music labels to “force” Spotify to abandon its free, ad-supported tier. As Apple prepares to gather the ashes of Beats Music and relaunch its own streaming music service — which sources say will likely to be paid-only — this gambit would decimate Spotify’s user base from 60 million total users to only 15 million paid users. Moreover, sources told the outlet that if Universal Music Group removed its catalog from YouTube, Apple would pay the licensing fee the label conglomerate receives from that platform. (YouTube also has a streaming service in the offing). Considering Apple’s ability to preload apps onto new versions of iOS — not to the mention the fact that it already has 800 million credit cards on file and so only needs to convince a tiny portion of them to sign up in order to beat Spotify — the move would be an effective knockout punch for Apple in America’s streaming music fight.

NYT - EU and Google
“With more than a decade of hindsight, the theories supporting the case against Microsoft have all but fallen apart, and the pursuit of the company that makes Windows may suggest a reason for skepticism about this fight against Google: The tech marketplace is fluid and unpredictable. The giants that look most unbeatable today could falter in ways that may once have seemed unthinkable — and without a lot of help from the government.” [...] Google makes most of its money from search ads, but the market for such direct advertising may be tapped out. The next great wave of digital advertising — a market far bigger than search spots — will come from ad budgets now reserved for TV commercials, and many observers bet that Facebook, not Google, is in the best position to get that business. &! bit.ly/1aCgTK7 &! Amazon's Monopoly Must Be Broken Up: A Radical Plan for the Tech Giant | New Republic
n Thiel’s phrasing: “Creative monopolies aren’t just good for the rest of society; they’re powerful engines for making it better.” Thiel makes an important point: The Internet-age monopolies are a different species; they flummox our conventional ways of thinking about corporate concentration and have proved especially elusive to those who ponder questions of antitrust, the discipline of law that aims to curb threats to the competitive marketplace. Part of the issue is the laws themselves, which were conceived to manage an industrial economy—and have, over time, evolved to focus on a specific set of narrow questions that have little to do with the core problem at hand. EU Sends Questionnaire to Rivals Over Facebook Deal With WhatsApp - WSJ
European Union antitrust officials have sent a detailed questionnaire to competitors and customers of Facebook Inc. and message service WhatsApp as they probe the proposed $19 billion acquisition of the latter by the California-based tech giant. EU antitrust officials will try get to the heart of the competitive landscape and understand what separates a social network from a messaging application, according to a questionnaire sent to them, and seen by The Wall Street Journal. Competitors have until Sept. 8 to reply to the questionnaire, which runs to nearly 70 pages and contains in-depth questions on the ease of switching between networks, how easy it is to create new competitors, and how the new social media industry and its apps compete with traditional telecoms services.

The Mountain View, Calif. company already owns YouTube, the world’s most-visited content streaming site, which competes with Twitch to broadcast and stream live or on-demand video game sessions. One source noted that because of the concerns, Google and Twitch could not come to an agreement on the size of a potential breakup fee in case the deal did not go through. Representatives at Twitch could not be immediately reached for comment while representatives at  Google declined to comment. +++ http://www.businessinsider.com/what-happened-to-the-google-twitch-acquisition-2014-8?op=1 +++ !!Start-Up lesson >> http://pando.com/2014/08/25/twitch-ceo-on-jilting-goolge-amazon-shares-our-long-term-values-but-does-it-really/ !! // Google failed @social & human aspect again.
