Half of white women continue to vote Republican. What's wrong with them? | Moira Donegan | Opinion | The Guardian
But there is something else at play, something more complicated, in white women’s relationship to white patriarchy. White women’s identity places them in a curious position at the intersection of two vectors of privilege and oppression: they are granted structural power by their race, but excluded from it by their sex. In a political system where racism and sexism are both so deeply ingrained, white women must choose to be loyal to either the more powerful aspect of their identity, their race, or to the less powerful, their sex. Some Republican white women might lean into racism not only for racism’s sake, but also as a means of avoiding or denying the realities of how sexist oppression makes them vulnerable.

Abortion rights in 'dire, immediate danger' as Anthony Kennedy retires | World news | The Guardian
Pro-choice advocates said Kennedy’s retirement represents a “dire, immediate danger” to women’s reproductive freedom. Though the supreme court is not expected to rule on abortion matters in the near future, all of the potential nominees shortlisted by the Trump administration are believed to be jurists who would overturn the landmark decision, Roe v Wade, given the opportunity. &! https://www.theguardian.com/law/2018/jun/27/anthony-kennedy-supreme-court-retirement-political-earthquake &! https://www.theguardian.com/law/2018/jun/27/how-trump-can-nominate-supreme-court-anthony-kennedy &! https://www.theguardian.com/law/2018/jun/27/anthony-kennedy-us-supreme-court-justice-to-retire

I’m glad a gay man of colour will be Irish prime minister, even if I abhor his politics | Emer O’Toole | Opinion | The Guardian
Yes, there are reasons to celebrate Leo Varadkar becoming leader of Fine Gael. But he is an austerity-championing neoliberal who is against reproductive rights [...] But Varadkar is a conservative. Left-leaning folk in Ireland are hoarse trying to explain to the faraways that, yes, we understand the optics – but this is Ireland, land of the topsy-turvy, where the election of a gay person of colour at the same time signals the entrenchment of anti-woman, anti-working-class austerity-as-usual. There have been understandably frustrated reactions, not only to the tone-deaf global coverage, but also to the ostensible “identity politics” signalled by LGBT rights groups welcoming Varadkar’s election.

A Tory leadership race between two women is not a feminist revolution
I find myself recalling Mrs Lintott’s declaration in Alan Bennett’s History Boys. “History,” she says, “is a commentary on the various and continuing incapabilities of men. What is history? History is women following behind – with the bucket.” //&! Theresa May voted to cut abortion rights. Leadsom = anti-queer religious fanatic. Both would deport immigrant women. This is not feminism. - bit.ly/29rpe7C //&! You know what women's liberation doesn't look like? A choice of two right-wing, anti-woman leaders who happen to be female. #ToryLeadership - bit.ly/29lG30w //&! Andrea Leadsom: I didn't like gay marriage law because it hurts Christians, admits Tory contender to be PM - ind.pn/29k1cHy & ind.pn/29vmqV1//&! Yes, two women are standing for the Tory leadership. Two candidates with a long track record of opposing equal rights for LGBT people. - https://www.facebook.com/owenjones84/posts/1057878920972286

Protests in Poland as proposed laws curtail women's rights | World news | The Guardian
Campaigners are planning to step up resistance to Poland’s ultra-conservative government after it cleared a constitutional path for hardline law changes, expected to include a total ban on abortion and curbs to gender and human rights. Tens of thousands joined mass demonstrations in the run-up to the law change, which would curtail the independence of the constitutional tribunal – the country’s highest legislative court. But to the dismay of women’s rights activists, no protests greeted the government’s first concrete policy move – to scrap subsidies for IVF in public hospitals.

Conspiracy-theorist nutbags run Congress, and they’re making Benghazi a verb: Next up, climate scientists - Salon.com
But in this political environment, being cautious about just handing a bunch of documents over to Republican is a smart move. After watching the Planned Parenthood and Benghazi hearings, a couple of things are clear: One, the Republicans will extract any stray word or number they can and take it out of context in an effort to advance their political agenda, with concerns about decency and honesty not restraining them in the slightest. Two, if they can’t find something like that, they’ll probably just lie about it. [...] The episode was a stellar demonstration of how the utter lack of morals and decency among House Republicans will lead them to distort and lie about numbers, even in the most obnoxious and obvious ways. [...] Imagine what kind of lies and distortions Republicans could gin up with the complex equations and variables that go into climate science. // confusing people. put doubt into peoples mind.

‘I can’t think of a time when it was worse’: US abortion doctors speak out | World news | The Guardian
It is a time of heightened tension in Texas, following the passing of one of the most restrictive anti-abortion bills in the nation, made famous by Democrat Wendy Davis’s 11-hour filibuster against it in 2013. The Boyds have been warned by the FBI not to give media interviews because of fears for their safety. Over the years, they have had two arson attacks at their clinics, one in the 1980s and one in 2007, as well as countless death threats. But they have chosen to ignore the agency’s instructions, to highlight what they say is a roll back of women’s hard-won reproductive rights.

BBC News - Midwife abortion objection case heard at Supreme Court
Almost 50 years after abortion became legal in England, Scotland and Wales, it remains a deeply emotive issue, both for its supporters and for those who object to abortion on conscientious grounds. Under Roman Catholic doctrine, life begins at conception, and no human being has the right to take the life of an unborn child. Although many Catholic women do seek abortions in the UK, the stance taken by the Roman Catholic Church has underpinned many of the pro-life groups which have challenged the legalisation of abortion and the interpretation of the 1967 Abortion Act. [...] Both are practising Roman Catholics and argued that they "hold a religious belief that all human life is sacred from the moment of conception and that termination of pregnancy is a grave offence against human life."

The Rise Of Europe's Religious Right
For the most part, though, issues dear to social conservatives were a side issue in elections driven heavily by economic frustration. [...] The suddenness with which social conservatives became a force in Brussels has many progressives speculating that they are the creations of American social conservatives seeking to “export the culture wars.” [...] Today, American ties seem much more about a shared vision to build a global conservative movement rather than leaning on stronger and wealthier U.S. partners for support. // http://www.salon.com/2014/02/28/the_dying_right_why_christian_fundamentalists_are_in_panic_mode_partner/ || Pro Progressive - the hard things are hard bc they are worth doing it. It's easy to turn ones back. But its hard to hold your face into the storm that is brewing. Holding onto status quo is not worth the struggle, it is a futile short-term view - as the status quo is not sustainable.

The Dispute Between Radical Feminism and Transgenderism
AND here the critique http://bit.ly/1tXlqLW & http://bit.ly/1ujpPJ9 // http://bit.ly/V1UxtS // http://bit.ly/1orNN4F // "In failing to provide a semblance of balance to the voices in the piece, this account becomes hopelessly skewed, and becomes little more than a radical feminist propaganda piece. Early on in her essay, Goldberg presents an extremely simplified and stereotyped view of trans women’s identities. She writes: “Trans women say that they are women because they feel female — that, as some put it, they have women’s brains in men’s bodies.” First, considering that the length of the article discusses trans people (and focuses heavily on trans women), to reduce the explanation of their complex experiences to three words — “they feel female” — is offensively reductionist. While such a passing nod to trans experiences might be not be out of place in a more LGBTQ-geared publication, in a more general consumption magazine[.]" + http://bit.ly/VkWUIA + http://huff.to/1Bo9aJr
