Israeli spies 'watched Russian agents breach Kaspersky software' - BBC News
Israeli spies looked on as Russian hackers breached Kaspersky cyber-security software two years ago, US media report.
The Russians were allegedly attempting to gather data on US intelligence programs, according to the New York Times and Washington Post.
Israeli agents made the discovery after breaching the software themselves.
Kaspersky has said it was neither involved in nor aware of the situation and denies collusion with authorities.
Last month, the US government decided to stop using the Russian firm's software on its computers.
The Israelis are said to have notified the US, which led to the ban on Kaspersky programs.

Redaction error reveals FBI did target Lavabit to spy on Edward Snowden
A redaction oversight by the US government has finally confirmed that the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s targeting of secure email service Lavabit was used specifically to spy on Edward Snowden.

Ladar Levison, creator of the email service, which was founded on a basis of private communications secured by encryption and had 410,000 users, was served a sealed order in 2013 forcing him to aid the FBI in its surveillance of Snowden.

Levison was ordered to install a surveillance package on his company’s servers and later to turn over Lavabit’s encryption keys so that it would give the FBI the ability to read the most secure messages that the company offered. He was also ordered not to disclose the fact to third-parties.

Can we really trust judges to protect reporters' confidential sources? | Media | The Guardian
Journalists won’t even be safe to talk email whistleblowers from a coffee shop [...] In stressing that the powers would not be used for mass surveillance, May said the onus would be on the home office to show necessity and proportionality. And who would decide whether that was justified? Judicial commissioners, she said. They would operate a “double-lock” authorisation process on intercept and bulk interception warrants in order to prevent intrusive snooping. [ old boys club with career interests? titles, pensions? ] But will this judicial oversight provide enough protection? That’s the key worry for journalists who now know that there is nowhere for them to conceal their communications with confidential sources. U.S. developing sanctions against China over cyberthefts - The Washington Post
[ double standard. probably know that they will be outed come time to have e-mailed trade secrets of other nations big companies to their own national companies, even if it is just for infrastructure or defense contract bids ] The White House is getting ready to issue "unprecedented economic sanctions" against Chinese companies and individuals "who have benefited from their government’s cybertheft of valuable U.S. trade secrets," says the Washington Post. But the Post doesn't explain what those sanctions would be, or why the U.S. is going after individual targets instead of the Chinese government itself. Here’s how reporters are reacting to Snowden’s revelations | PandoDaily
The global surveillance programs revealed by Edward Snowden have caused journalists to change how they operate, question what the government knows about them, and consider abandoning investigative reporting, according to a survey from the Pew Research Center. A significant number of the journalists surveyed said they had changed their behavior, whether it’s how they store sensitive files (49 percent), how they communicate with other journalists (29 percent), whether they’ve reached out to a source (13 percent), or pursued a specific story (2 percent). Many are also convinced the government is gathering information about them. Some 64 percent of journalists believed intelligence agencies had “probably collected data” about them. (The other 36 percent, as “InfoSec Taylor Swift” joked, must not read the news.)

Today's Uncertain Future Calls For Observation and Patience, Not Boldness and Strategy | BillMoyers.com
Not one of the signature foreign policy initiatives conceived in Obama’s first term has borne fruit. When it came to making a fresh start with the Islamic world, responsibly ending the “dumb” war in Iraq (while winning the “necessary” one in Afghanistan), “resetting” US-Russian relations, and “pivoting” toward Asia, mark your scorecard zero for four. There’s no doubt that when Kerry arrived at the State Department he brought with him some much-needed energy. That he is giving it his all — the department’s website reports that the secretary has already clocked over 682,000 miles of travel — is doubtless true as well. The problem is the absence of results. Remember when his signature initiative was going to be an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal? Sadly, that quixotic plan, too, has come to naught.

Google did fight to reveal warrant for WikiLeaks journalists’ Gmail accounts, attorney says | PandoDaily
bit.ly/1EnsklH - [any american company, or company with american satellite office is not deemed safe. that that is just the tip of the iceberg.] An attorney for Google has told the Washington Post that the company did fight a gag order preventing it from telling three WikiLeaks journalists their Gmail accounts were monitored by the Justice Department as the result of a warrant issued in March 2012. The statement was made in response to questions from WikiLeaks regarding Google’s compliance with the warrant, the existence of which it didn’t reveal to its subjects until December 2014, more than two-and-a-half years after the warrant was first issued. The warrant allowed the FBI to receive metadata and the full content of any messages sent via the monitored accounts. (WikiLeaks says the Gmail accounts were for personal use and that all sensitive conversations take place via encrypted communications tools.)

Blacklisted: The Secret Government Rulebook For Labeling You a TerroristThe Intercept
"The heart of the document revolves around the rules for placing individuals on a watchlist. “All executive departments and agencies,” the document says, are responsible for collecting and sharing information on terrorist suspects with the National Counterterrorism Center. It sets a low standard—”reasonable suspicion“—for placing names on the watchlists, and offers a multitude of vague, confusing, or contradictory instructions for gauging it." [...] The immediate family of suspected terrorists [...] ”associates” who have a defined relationship with a suspected terrorist, but whose involvement in terrorist activity is not known. A third loophole is broader still—individuals with “a possible nexus” to terrorism, but for whom there is not enough “derogatory information” to meet the reasonable suspicion[.]" |PS: The Intercept/First Look.org = Greenwald & Omydiar, former sold it all to the latter. // Patriot Act II - http://bit.ly/1zVO3wf // http://bit.ly/1y4kc1R source not from Snowden!

eBay Shrugged: Pierre Omidyar believes there should be no philanthropy without profit | PandoDaily
Pierre Omidyar. The role of Omidyar Network in so many major events of the past week — helping elect India’s ultranationalist leader Narendra Modi; co-funding Ukraine regime-change NGOs with USAID, resulting in a deadly civil war and Monday’s election of Ukrainian billionaire oligarch Petro Poroshenko; and now, this week’s first-ever sit-down TV interview with Edward Snowden, through an arrangement between NBC News and Pierre Omidyar’s First Look Media — shows how these contradictions are coming to the fore, and shaping our world. [...] Muhammad Yunus failed to dissuade Omidyar: "Let them make money—but why do you want to make money off the poor people?” [...] “Omidyar views the fund as a way of testing his theories about commercializing the sector. ‘It’s really the demonstration impact I’m looking for, primarily,’ he said.” << Billionaires Playground. Op-Ed: What happens to WikiLeaks matters to everyone
The problem is that this concern for the First Amendment protections of the press and of citizens in general, is a new development. Just last year the Department of Justice was caught spying on the offices of the Associated Press. That spying led to a source going to prison for 43 months. That was not an isolated incident and the DOJ’s war on journalism goes back quite some time. In 2006, it was revealed that DOJ was targeting a freelance journalist covering the Free Trade Area of the Americas conference. That is certainly nowhere near as important to the Department as shutting down a vile enemy of freedom like WikiLeaks. But they managed to find the resources to go after a freelance journalist covering a trade agreement.

Brazilian president Rousseff: US surveillance a 'breach of international law' | World news | theguardian.com
Brazil's president, Dilma Rousseff, has launched a blistering attack on US espionage at the UN general assembly, accusing the NSA of violating international law by its indiscriminate collection of personal information of Brazilian citizens and economic espionage targeted on the country's strategic industries. Rousseff's angry speech was a direct challenge to President Barack Obama, who was waiting in the wings to deliver his own address to the UN general assembly, and represented the most serious diplomatic fallout to date from the revelations by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden.

Chelsea Manning: prison will not be kind to the WikiLeaks informer - Telegraph
It's hard to see why not. Imagine being forced to grow up as a man, knowing all the while you're a woman. Imagine being so desperate to deny your true gender that you "man up" by joining the army. [...] It makes me think that while I'd be the first to suggest that women aren't treated entirely equally in today's society, we get a far better deal than trans people. [...] I realised how little I knew about the trans community. It seems I'm not alone. [...] Perhaps Chelsea Manning's announcement is an opportunity for us all to reflect how little we understand the fear and torment she and others face every day of their lives.

BBC News - GCHQ use of Prism surveillance data was legal, says report
UK press and media has been mute about it all. Maybe because USA put a lot of pressure on UK because of the Julian Assange debakel? UK is more of an ally to USA than Germany to USA.
