In our focus on the digital, have we lost our sense of what being human means? | Genevieve Bell | Opinion | The Guardian
MAKE OUR OWN FUTURE - And of course, there are bigger questions about the role of technology more broadly. In making the machines smarter, we have sacrificed a little something of ourselves – we run the risk of being reduced to data and the decisions it drives. I believe we are more than data, more than just intelligence. I worry that, in our current focus on the digital, we have lost some of our agency and some of our sense of what being human might mean. But I don’t believe this is inevitable or irreversible.

Campaign issues cultural ‘call to arms’ to boost arts learning in England | Culture | The Guardian
A generation of young people will be “intellectually poorer, emotionally more limited, and socially more isolated” unless they are allowed access to a full range of arts and culture. [...] Serota said experience of art and culture in school can shape all lives. “Creativity is ... one of the essential ingredients of a rich and tolerant society and of personal and national identity. It should be one of the cornerstones of education, not an option or an afterthought and we should be celebrating all kinds of intelligence and intuition, not creating hierarchies within the disciplines of the mind,” he said.

DWP faces civil service rebellion over quizzing women on rape clause | News | The National
FRESH calls have been made to scrap the controversial “rape clause” after a civil servants’ union raised grave concerns over staff being made to interrogate victims seeking child benefit for a third child.

Under Westminster plans, child benefit will only be payable to the first two children in a family, unless subsequent babies are the product of rape.

The onus will be on mothers to prove their children were conceived during a sex attack, but the method of doing this has not yet been set out.

The Department for Work and pensions has pledged to develop “appropriate” protections for women and ensure “support is compassionate and effective”.

The Growth Trap
[ growing for growth sake! vs growing in a world/area that is not conducive to grow ] When Twitter went public in 2013, its stock soared and its value jumped to $25 billion. Its founders and early investors got rich. But since then, the company has been considered a failure, despite the fact that it boasts 320 million active users, because it's not growing fast enough. Douglas Rushkoff, author of "Throwing Rocks at the Google Bus: How Growth Became the Enemy of Prosperity," talks to Steve Paikin about why he sees the push for more growth as dangerous. // true capitalists (shareholder, crony, greedy) w/o self-regulation or governance extract all the value there is to extract and then leave, dispersing it to the few who already have [...] WE MUST REWRITE THE RULES OF THE GROWTH GAME ITSELF! [...] you want to optimise the economy based on velocity of money (circulation of money), not share price and value extraction [...]

What the Hell Happened to Personal Style?
Where a 14-year-old Kate Moss put in her time on Portobello Road with Corinne Day, learning to thrift, self-style, and create her own ambling glamour, the young fashion plates of today have outsourced the development of their style to professionals. And those employed to keep the young and stylish considered that way don’t dare take any real risks, for fear of sartorial missteps, bad tabloid titles (and the online equivalent), or a mention on a worst-dressed list. [...] We are so inundated by these images from paparazzi, from media, from the stars themselves, that we cease to see any meaning behind any of it. Which would be fine (their funeral, as the saying goes), except it’s a very costly absence of meaning, both societally and economically.

Council tried to cover up failings after Poppi Worthington's death | UK news | The Guardian
A local authority criticised for failing to protect Poppi Worthington’s siblings for almost a year after her death did not discipline social workers and instead applied for a draconian order in an attempt to cover-up the failings, documents show. Thirteen-month-old Poppi died after she was found with serious injuries at her home in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, three years ago. A high court family judge concluded that Poppi’s father, Paul Worthington, sexually assaulted her shortly before her death and she died as a result of the injuries she suffered during the assault. It has been revealed that her siblings were not taken into care until after their parents were arrested in August 2013.

Hungarian PM says UK must alter tax credits plan for EU citizens | Politics | The Guardian
In a sign of the strength of feeling in eastern and central Europe over the proposed ban, Viktor Orbán said Hungarians should not be described as migrants anywhere in the EU, and said Cameron’s EU reform proposals must not be discriminatory. Orbán made his remarks at an upbeat press conference with his British counterpart in Budapest, in which he said he agreed with three out of the four reform proposals that Britain has tabled. His only disagreement is over the plan to ban EU workers from claiming in-work benefits for four years.

'Like a beautiful painting': image of New Year's mayhem in Manchester goes viral | UK news | The Guardian
[ symptom ] Quoted by the Manchester Evening News, Goodman he said the appeal of the image might lie in its unusual subject matter. “There are plenty of photographs published that show people having a great time. It’s much safer and easier photographing happy, willing people posing than photographing angry, drunk people candid. “That’s not a criticism of the former, but it’s one reason why the latter might stand out.” He said he was “flattered” that his photograph had been compared to Renaissance art, but said he was merely “in the right place at the right time”. Or as American photographic pioneer Ansell Adams put it: “Sometimes I arrive just when God’s ready to have someone click the shutter.”

David Cameron to curb migration from EU by targeting jobless | Politics | The Guardian
[ working on the fringes ] The prime minister’s plan to curb in-work benefits has met a wall of opposition from other EU governments, with many saying they would discriminate against workers from other member nations and cut directly across Europe’s commitment to free movement of labour. Becoming radicalised – and keeping a secret - BBC News
Some of these individuals identified with an organisation such as IS or al-Qaeda while others followed their own extremist beliefs and underwent a more personal form of radicalisation.
[...] Ungleichheit zwischen den sozialen Gruppen verstärkt.

Scans prove there's no such thing as a 'male' or 'female' brain | New Scientist
Despite persisting stereotypes, girls are no worse than boys at science and maths subjects, either. “People get wedded to the idea that being male or female is highly predictive of having different aptitudes or career choices,” “This study fights against the idea that these outcomes are based on biological differences, as opposed to cultural expectations.” Other body systems are also often wrongly considered to be either male or female, [...] “There are differences between men and women when you look in large groups, and these are important for diagnosis and treatment,” she says. “But there are always more differences within genders. We always need to look at culture, environment, education and a person’s role in society,” [...] “It’s a shame that people’s experience alone isn’t enough for us to recognise as a society that non-binary gender is legitimate.”

Rules banning gay and bisexual men from giving blood to be reviewed | Politics | The Guardian
A spokesperson for the gay rights campaign group Stonewall said: “We want a donation system that is fair and based on up-to-date medical evidence. Currently gay and bi people cannot give blood if they have had sex in the past 12 months, regardless of whether they used protection. Yet straight people who may have had unprotected sex can donate. “These current rules are clearly unfair and we want to see people asked similar questions, irrespective of their sexual orientation, to accurately assess the risk of infection. Screening all donors by sexual behaviour rather than by sexual orientation would increase blood stocks in times of shortage and create a safer supply by giving a more accurate, non-discriminatory assessment.”

Etwa 40 Prozent der Sachen im Kleiderschrank werden fast nie getragen. [...] Denn laut einer Umfrage der Umweltschutzorganisation Greenpeace betrachten viele Deutsche Kleidung als Wegwerfware. Demnach hängen 5,2 Milliarden Kleidungsstücke in deutschen Schränken.
