[...] Europa hat auch ein Strukturproblem. Arbeits- und Produktmärkte sind überreguliert. VW crisis won't put brakes on global goals - BBC News
Whatever motoring analogy you pick, the assumption so far has been that Volkswagen would deal with the biggest crisis in its history by taking its ambitions down a notch. But contrary to expectations, VW's new leadership says the company is instead putting its foot down. One analysis of the root cause of Volkswagen's emissions-rigging scandal is that the company just got too big, too ambitious and too greedy. VW was so determined to beat Toyota at all costs, goes the theory, that it was willing to cut corners. In a bid to crack the US market, pressure was reportedly piled on employees to achieve the holy grail of a diesel car which was low on both toxic emissions and fuel consumption - all the while staying unfeasibly powerful.

Volkswagen US boss told about emission cheat in 2014 - BBC News
Michael Horn said he was told about a "possible emissions non-compliance" in the spring of 2014. The revelation was made in testimony due to be presented to a committee of the US House of Representatives investigating the scandal on Thursday . He said he was told after a study by West Virginia University was published. "I was informed that EPA [Environmental Protection Agency] regulations included various penalties for non-compliance with the emissions standards and that the agencies can conduct engineering tests which could include 'defeat device' testing or analysis," he said. "I was also informed that the company engineers would work with the agencies to resolve the issue." Mr Horn said in the written evidence it was not until 3 September this year that Volkswagen told US authorities about the "defeat device" in emissions software in diesel vehicles for the model years 2009 to 2015. [...] "Responsible parties will be identified and held accountable," Mr Horn said.

The health implications of the diesel scandal - BBC News
[ http://www.spiegel.de/thema/abgasaffaere_bei_volkswagen/ ] The diesel scandal started as a worry for car owners. Yet, according to Prof Alistair Lewis, an air pollution expert at the University of York, "it is overwhelmingly a health story". The costs of not doing more to tackle air pollution can be measured in "thousands of deaths and billions of pounds, all passed on to the taxpayer", he says. "The real costs here are the ones the taxpayer picks up in terms of providing extra healthcare," he explains. "The only reason we measure NO2 (nitrogen dioxide) and particulates is because they are harmful to health." //&! youtu.be/HG8Kpfs4ZYs - Krank dank VW?

Motorists 'tricked' in car test abuses, claims report - BBC News
Motorists are being "tricked" by carmakers into buying vehicles which claim to be more fuel efficient than they really are, a new report claims. Transport & Environment said Europe's carmakers routinely abused tests on fuel performance and CO2 emissions. The lobby group found an average 40% gap between the fuel and C02 emitted in lab tests against road driving. The Brussels-based Transport & Environment said drivers are spending €450 (£331m) a year more than expected on fuel. Over the lifetime of a car, this adds up to an average €2,800 for additional fuel, the report found. "Carmakers are effectively cheating their own customers," the report said. "There is a need for a new [emissions] test but what we're also seeing here is a distortion of the current system. "The independent agencies [in Europe] that oversee the tests are paid for by the car industry themselves. --- 'Tip of the iceberg' = VW

VW lost the plot. But that’s the danger when business lacks social moorings | Will Hutton | Comment is free | The Guardian
VW’s existential crisis has revealed the weaknesses inherent in western economies. Change must now happen [...] Despite a vast R and D budget, VW is far from a leader in the electrical car or hybrid market. Mr Winterkorn’s bonuses were based on his capacity to deliver production, jobs and profits: environmental sustainability or engaging with wider stakeholders did not get a look-in. [...] Capitalism, in short, may have boundless creative and innovative energy – but it also has boundless ways to go wrong. Intriguingly, recent work by a group of researchers at Harvard and the London Business School compared 90 American companies that took sustainability seriously with 90 who did not. Over 18 years the 90 committed to sustainability delivered annual financial returns 4.8% higher than the other 90.

Volkswagen: The scandal explained - BBC News
&! The city of Wolfsburg in Lower Saxony is not merely the hometown of Volkswagen. Wolfsburg is Volkswagen, Germany's answer to Detroit - but rather more prosperous. [...] Financially the consequences are unlikely to be very pretty. VW has already set aside €6.5bn (£4.7bn) to cover the costs of recalls, and pay for efforts to rebuild the brand. For a company which made a net profit of €10.8bn last year, that is not an insurmountable figure. However, the real total may end up being considerably higher. Even so, the biggest cost may be to Volkswagen's reputation. The company has been caught deceiving not only regulators, but consumers as well. The "clean diesels" it sold in the US have been publicly exposed as nothing of the sort.
