Ex-health secretary Andrew Lansley to advise firms on healthcare reforms | Politics | The Guardian
Andrew Lansley, the architect of the coalition government’s efforts to privatise parts of the NHS, has taken a job advising corporate clients on healthcare reforms despite David Cameron’s pledge to close the “revolving door” between Whitehall and the private sector. The management consultants Bain & Company took on Lord Lansley in August. The newly ennobled Conservative peer also plans to become an active associate of a “strategic communications consultancy” set up by his wife and will advise on health and social care. His appointments will raise eyebrows because Lansley, who was health secretary for two years until 2012, is still blamed by many in the health service for the Health and Social Care Act, which critics said increased the privatisation of the NHS.

NHS to begin denying people hearing aids for first time | Society | The Guardian
[ From January 2015 - bit.ly/13RgSyy - NHS accused of ‘cruel’ rationing of hearing aids ] [ NHS services, yet another example, is being rationed. Because budget is blown on chronic diseases caused mainly by diet and sedentary lifestyle. NHS CEO did say prevention is not addressed properly of how big the lever actually is long-term! ] The NHS will start denying people with hearing problems access to hearing aids for the first time from Thursday in a controversial move that critics claim will worsen sufferers’ social isolation. The GP-led NHS clinical commissioning group in North Staffordshire is taking the unprecedented step of ceasing to provide free hearing aids to mainly elderly people in its area with mild hearing loss. It is also making it harder for those with moderate hearing loss to get access to hearing aids by introducing new eligibility criteria against which patients will be judged.

VW lost the plot. But that’s the danger when business lacks social moorings | Will Hutton | Comment is free | The Guardian
VW’s existential crisis has revealed the weaknesses inherent in western economies. Change must now happen [...] Despite a vast R and D budget, VW is far from a leader in the electrical car or hybrid market. Mr Winterkorn’s bonuses were based on his capacity to deliver production, jobs and profits: environmental sustainability or engaging with wider stakeholders did not get a look-in. [...] Capitalism, in short, may have boundless creative and innovative energy – but it also has boundless ways to go wrong. Intriguingly, recent work by a group of researchers at Harvard and the London Business School compared 90 American companies that took sustainability seriously with 90 who did not. Over 18 years the 90 committed to sustainability delivered annual financial returns 4.8% higher than the other 90.

The more you pursue happiness, the faster it runs from you | Zach Stafford | Comment is free | The Guardian
Psychologist Iris Mauss at the University of California, Berkley found that the pursuit of happiness might just leave you worse off. “Wanting to be happy can make you less happy,” said Mauss in an interview with livescience.com. “If you explicitly and purposely focus on happiness, that appears to have a self-defeating quality.” [...] In her studies, participants who were not happy would begin blaming themselves for feeling sad. They thought it was an immediate flag for their failure, making these negative feelings even more counter-productive. The people who accepted these negative feelings as normal, however, were much happier in the long run. So, accepting your sadness could actually make you feel good. [...] For Darwin, emotions were very much tied to surviving, which requires more than just happiness. [...] Be open about how you’re feeling, don’t try to hide behind it or conceal it. // &! keeping a diary talking to and about yourself compassionately.

The Myth of Valley DoucheBaggery - John Battelle's Search Blog
But I think our industry culture is moving far faster than the writers at Silicon Valley might wish to believe. I think we’re seeing the rise of a new culture, one that rejects arrogance and the founder worship which breeds it. Inevitable outliers aside, the Valley and technology culture I experience every day in my work at NewCo is one of passion, sweat, earnestness, and good intentions. Sure, we all fuck up. And sure, the press (especially, not surprisingly, the press in New York) has a field day when someone does. But by and large, the teams making companies like Slack, LiveRamp, Medium, Earnest, MetroMile, Lyft, Okta, Pinterest, and hundreds more are damn fine people, and they are dedicating their lives to making something that creates positive change – a product or service that makes the world a better place (even if it’s in a small way). What I Learned This Week About Tim Cook’s Apple | Re/code
[ always along the motto: extension of you, part of you. The new Apple under Jobs was NOT an overnight success! Most capitalistic company out of SV, no counter-culture out of largest corp on world. & can pull of iAd coup because it has monopsony! & Duopoly w Android. ] Many people love Apple, others despise it. But, even without Jobs, it cannot be ignored. There simply is no other company that combines such a high-quality hardware line with such well-regarded software platforms. A faltering Samsung has the former, but not the latter. A strong and admirable Google has the latter, but not the former. If you didn’t believe that before, this week’s event made it crystal clear, with once-bitter rivals like Microsoft and Adobe showing up onstage to boast about how well their products worked with new Apple hardware and software. Major Executive Shake-Up at Yahoo Media Unit Amid Company-Wide Talent Turmoil (Update) | Re/code
There have been a lot of changes in the media unit too, including some layoffs and other adjustments. Under Savitt and with the support of Mayer, Yahoo has sought to create a content destination site, with elaborate online magazines and big-name hires like Katie Couric and David Pogue. Still, the lack of traction in reviving its core business, especially advertising, has begun to take its toll. And, no surprise, there are many more as other Silicon Valley companies — such as Twitter, Facebook and others — have grabbed the cream of the crop at Yahoo of late, as its core business has continued to suffer. I have spent the last several weeks compiling a long list of the leavings, so more to come.

Atari founder Nolan Bushnell on why life is 'a game' - BBC News
After his breakout success in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Mr Bushnell made several missteps that eventually led to some entrepreneurial failures and financial ruin. "When I was 35, I was insufferable. I thought I could do no wrong and I got really sloppy," [...] He chalks the creation of Atari up to a bit of good luck: "I was probably the only electrical engineer that understood television, and understood the coin-operated game business [from the amusement park] in 1969," he says. [...] Mr Bushnell also emphasises that the popularity of Atari's games was primarily due to his ability to find and hire talented, creative workers, including one you may have heard of - Steve Jobs. Short sighted ideological national interest will bring worse than they can imagine - destroying the european dream and damaging europe as a whole as economy long-term (ie deflationary pressures ECB fights with more money, instead with political long-term resolution in the interest of THE EUROPEAN UNION, SOLIDARITY, they already did since GFC with their dither strategy, putting plasters on fault lines. Angela Merkel could have become the true Queen of Europe history would have remembered her. But she can only be national career politician & a lab worker (has science degree).

How does work happen at Buffer? In 2015 we switched to a new organizational structure inspired by Frederic Laloux's Reinventing Organizations. This new structure eliminated the need for managers, bosses and formal hierarchy. The team now operates on a backbone of self-organizing task forces, meaning that people are able to propose, join and build within any task force at any time. We've seen this blur the lines of what it means to have a job title at Buffer because it's so common to see people working across a wide range of roles and responsibilities. &! https://open.bufferapp.com/no-managers-forest/ - via https://bufferapp.com/journey#what /// &! see also Spotify's approach - https://labs.spotify.com/2014/03/27/spotify-engineering-culture-part-1/ &! http://techcrunch.com/2012/11/17/heres-how-spotify-scales-up-and-stays-agile-it-runs-squads-like-lean-startups/ &! &! open.bufferapp.com/job-descriptions-diversity/

My Dad kicked ass at Wii bowling: Or, why it’s okay to compete with Travis Kalanick | PandoDaily
We investors would never bet against the CEO! And yet, if you consider the most respected tech CEOs like Steve Jobs and Jeff Bezos, they aren’t just CEOs investors doubted. Their very leadership is defined in their defiance of what investors wanted. On that front, the love Uber investors have for TK is itself a warning sign for the company. Here’s what I’d say to Uber investors: You own part of what is potentially one of the most powerful corporate combustion engines ever devised by mankind. Congratulations! But it’s both stable and unstable, and it could end up blasting up into uncharted space or blowing up in your face. And please don’t portray your loved ones as losers to puff up the legend of TK. As I have been reminded time and again: thinking about hyping an already overvalued company? Good luck. [TK doesnt do conservative nor gratitude, he had his battles with a 'mediocre' outcome b4. Forget Netflix’s stock volatility, the real news is its long-term plan is taking shape | PandoDaily
In other words, now that Netflix is in a third of US homes, it’s already showing signs of market saturation blunting its potential for future growth. There are two reasons why investors would shrug off this bad news: because they’re too busy covering short positions, or because they are actually beginning to buy into the long-term case for Netflix that Hastings has been making for years. As if telling a child for the hundredth time that vegetables are good for him, Hastings spelled out, sometimes in bold text, the Netflix game plan: “It is increasingly clear that virtually all entertainment video will be Internet video in the future. We’ll continue to improve our content, our marketing and our service, to eventually achieve ‘must have’ status in most households.”

BBC News - More student loans won't be repaid, government believes
Ministers estimated that 28% of loans would never be paid back in full when factoring their calculations. But now repayment levels are projected to drop so low that the government is close to getting back less money than it would have by keeping the old system. Responding to a parliamentary question, universities minister David Willetts said the government had been reviewing its modelling on student loans and now estimated that about 45% would be written off - an increase from 40% six months ago. Economics consultancy London Economics said the "tipping point" at which the costs of the new system will exceed those of the old one would be reached if 48.6% of all student loans were not repaid.

The most ridiculous quotes from NYMag’s feature on the future of Time Inc. | PandoDaily
That said, it hasn’t stopped Time from at least talking like a startup. The company’s CTO Colin Bodell, a former Amazon executive, sounds almost like a parody of a fail-fast entrepreneur, spouting off Silicon Valley koans to Sherman like, “I don’t care if it’s the janitor who comes up with the next big idea,” and “We know we have to iterate very, very fast.” [...] Time seems as confused on the editorial side of the company as it is on the business side. Ripp tells Sherman he brought in Pearlstine, a longtime staff reporter for the Wall Street Journal, because he understands the magazine’s “traditions.” And yet Ripp supports both native advertising (hell, who doesn’t these days) and, perhaps more troublingly, Forbes’ contributor model, which basically lets any hack publish under a Forbes byline no matter how compromised by special interests the writer is. [...] Time is talking the entrepreneurial talk, but not walking the walk.

How Do You Solve A Problem Like Marissa?
... Wall Street. ... but question remains :: Marissa likes to be lauded (that is what they write about the person - Marissa Mayer - they the tech press in SF/SV). Is she too shy to up-set people, within, making hard decisions, having the hard conversations? Cutting 30% of workforce, cutting this or that pig. Making Yahoo! her own bitch, communicating clearly that the road they travelled on doesn't lead them to a better, more sustainable, stable future? Is that what is holding her back - her liking to be liked, praised, lauded? Only she knows. And only months after a post-partum or post-mortem we will hear it from her. But consider this, there is no magic wand for Yahoo! Not one single trick that changes it all. Google was a self-runner, because of the magic wand called AdSense. She never had to make and asses (with incomplete information and a in a fast moving world) such difficult decisions. Never was she more visible and held publicly, by bystanders and amateurs, accountable.

But where do the benefits of free ridership accrue, if not to riders themselves? To drivers, who enjoy less congested roads and free parking spaces? To local businesses, who reap the benefits of increased mobility and local spending power? To everyone, in the form of clean air? It’s not an abstract question when the bill comes due, and answering it has proven a formidable obstacle to cities, like San Francisco and Portland, that have studied the possibility of making transit free.

Foursquare may be challenged, but Crowley’s job is not in jeopardy | PandoDaily
|| http://pando.com/2014/07/23/foursquare-is-dead-long-live-foursquare/ || To the latter first: Foursquare is mostly considered a failure because its hype was so great. But the company clearly has real value. With 50 million users worldwide and more data on their physical movements and social habits of these users that all but a handful of companies, it’s highly unlikely that Foursquare just goes away. As I wrote at the time of the Waze acquisition: …the data Foursquare is collecting on where people go and what they do is potentially more varied, rich, valuable and usable for different applications. That’s particularly the case when you factor in Foursquare’s API which is also used by Path, Instagram, Uber, Evernote, Garmin, Vine, Magellan, and – you guessed it! – Waze. [...] Selling or not selling is such a brutal decision — and I commend when entrepreneurs who don’t — because success even after a huge offer is still so uncertain. !! YouTube Music’s Head Quits, a Setback to Paid Service - Digits - WSJ
LaRosa is the second person in charge of YouTube’s music service to leave over the past 12 months. The other, Nikhil Chandhok, left last fall according to his LinkedIn profile. Chandhok was a director in charge of music, paid subscriptions and live streaming, according to the profile. Both departures resulted in part from frustrations that YouTube has been unable to launch its music subscription service in the year-plus since the first version of it was developed, according to a person familiar the matter. Those delays have resulted from internal arguments about how the service should be designed, including what features YouTube should charge users for and how the service should be integrated with the rest of YouTube. [Is another testament that YT is 4 Larry Page only 2nd Class [no urgency]. GOOG wont be hurt by those incidents, but moral & motivation suffers. Bill Gurley schools NYU professor: Uber will be 25x bigger than you think | PandoDaily
[ + long tail use cases and cases that seem in retrospect obvious but currently are foggy (ie owning a car in the city for ppl a luxury good), car ownership deemed inefficient/waste of money; when car is used only ~5% during the day and there are clearly cheaper and if not even more convenient options of daily transportation on offer. ] Gurley, who is one of the smartest and most articulate figures in all of venture capital (and who just happens to be an early Uber investor and board member) laid out a more than 4,500-word argument for why Damodaran underestimated the Uber opportunity by no less than a factor of 25. The Benchmark Capital partner was diplomatic, apologetic even, but that made his dismantling of the professor’s reasoning no less thorough.

BBC Sport - World Cup 2014: Brazil cracked up, says Germany's Joachim Low
w/o Thiago Silva, Luiz was incapable 2 pickup Leadership role, commanding, directing, organising the game. It wasnt just Neymar missing. It was a team w/o leadership. Youve got 11 world players on both sides. But a team w/o a leader, vision, direction, playbook is a incomplete team. A house of cards that was the Brazilian Team, (many around 1-2 key players - philosophy) fell apart. http://bbc.in/1mHpAHB + http://bbc.in/U39yeN "Scolari bounded off the team coach wearing a white "Forca Neymar" baseball cap while captain David Luiz and goalkeeper Julio Cesar held up his number 10 shirt during the national anthem. Fine sentiments perhaps, but also a sign of overwrought emotions, of the pressure of playing without their superstar and the doubts that exposed. The constant hugging and team bonding smacked more of insecurity and posturing. Germany in contrast were cold, clinical, magnificent." http://bbc.in/1znN7l3 http://bit.ly/1oix4ML + "the trophy doesnt say great team, it says 'winners.'"

"We are in the service business, helping them being successful." VC guys - here to help you; council, scale, connect/network help, help where they can be helpful otherwise find the person who can help you with X (ie Chris Sacca seems to have special skill set that some companies can leverage for biz deals and negotiations - ie Uber [ http://youtu.be/iqUG2_cmZ6I ]). See a16z model; Operations Helpers (HR, Marketing, biz Dev.). That is where Angel Investors (single persons) and Seed Rounds lack value; the added value and the scalability (n+1 people behind VC company). In Finance School; the present value of the company is the future cash-flow (not necessarily profits), that is why companies who aimed for revenue growth are much more valuable than companies who aimed for margin. Term 'Investing in the future.' ;-) The future is uncertain by definition. Very uncertain. High risk, high potential returns. With given losers (losses non-leveraged, can't loose more than you've invested).

there is a feedback loop between VC's (capital) and Press/Reporting/Lack of Original Reporting; former want's to find and pick the needle in the hay stack and put that badge on his jacket and wear it for life carrying it everywhere he/she goes, the latter wants to be the one seeing and reporting the the needle in the hay stack and wants to be able to always link to it back when he/she covers the exit in what form it may ever be. growth can't be infinite in a finite world population. PERIOD. revenue 2x more worth for that margin - in terms of apples to apples company valuation. long-term thinking applies; we can later improve margins. lets focus on scale. market dominance/relevance. [...] getting over the 1bn figure is hard. Instagram. ... WhatsApp ... FB was overpaying (19bn) in order to have it, be relevant in that space, and not let it have anybody else. PERIOD. Was Strategic as Instragram was for Pictures (vertical). [...] Patent system is, can be, stifling in many ways. Because it serves as distraction from the Vision, the Product and the Execution. Apple knows that competition is catching up faster and faster in terms of design and functionality etc etc. They hired 2 fashion people already (burberry and from LVHM). And to differentiate the brand further (price/status symbol - above middle class) and to keep selling it's Apple Products ... including wearables (Watch & Headphone) they hired those key people or b(r)ought them into the mothership. They could have long ago bought personal cloud storage companies and other stuff to add to its portfolio bla bla bla.... but that 'Software', you can't display - show off - walking around downtown manhatten. Trichet Urges a New Vision of Europe as Greeks Protest Austerity Measures - Bloomberg
“These days, ‘Europe’ and the benefits it brings have come to be taken for granted,” Trichet said in a speech in Brussels last night, according to a text provided by the ECB. “Thanks to the success of European integration, the threat of war has become a memory of the past for many Europeans, in particular the younger generation. This makes it all the more urgent to develop a renewed vision of the kind of Europe we want and indeed need -- a vision that is easily understood and shared among European Union citizens.”

“Each generation needs to affirm its commitment to Europe,” Trichet said. “Revitalizing Europe means” ensuring that “the burdens of today’s adjustments are not shifted onto future generations.”
improve economic governance and strengthen rules to prevent unsound policies.
“In the short-term, we have to tackle the most urgent issues by implementing the structural adjustment programs that are currently underway,”

Notes on Leadership // ben's blog
So what makes people want to follow a leader? We look for 3 key traits:

The ability to articulate the vision
The right kind of ambition
The ability to achieve the vision

A better definition comes from former Secretary of State Colin Powell who said: “You have achieved excellence as a leader when people will follow you anywhere if only out of curiosity.” For our purposes, we can generalize this to be the measure of the quality of a leader: the quantity, quality and diversity of people who want to follow her.
