How the Tory election machine fell apart | Politics | The Guardian
Fiona Hill Nick Timothy Lynton Crosby // Tim Bale, a historian of the party and professor of politics at the University of London, argues that the Tories have gradually stopped presenting voters with an appealing vision of Britain. “In the 80s, they had a good balance of negativity and positivity,” he says. This meant exploiting the flaws of Labour leaders such as Michael Foot and Neil Kinnock while also promising a society of entrepreneurs and mass property ownership, an attractive idea in an era of increasing materialism. Yet at the 1992 election, under Thatcher’s less secure successor, John Major, this started to change. “He didn’t want a negative campaign,” says Bale, “but he was persuaded.” When the Conservatives won the election unexpectedly, victory was attributed by many Tories – and commentators and Labour politicians – to a single crude-but-effective Conservative campaign phrase: “Labour’s Tax Bombshell.”

Biggest Brexit donor urges May to guarantee rights of EU nationals | Politics | The Guardian
Senior Leave backers express concern over approach to immigration and say students should be free to come to UK [...] “People who are doing great jobs in this country are feeling insecure and I think it would be really good for those people to have the comfort that we are not going to boot them out in 18 months’ time,” he told the Observer. “I just think we should make the gesture, full stop. I don’t think there should be a quid pro quo, I just think we should make the gesture. They would look pretty churlish if they didn’t [reciprocate by guaranteeing the status of UK nationals in the EU].”

His intervention comes after a week in which Brussels officials expressed concern over reaching a deal on the status of EU nationals in the UK. Brussels is insisting that they are allowed to keep all their rights, including access to healthcare and the right to bring a spouse to the UK.

Donald Trump, Marine Le Pen: Wie Wirtschaftskrisen Populisten helfen - Kolumne - SPIEGEL ONLINE

Brexit may leave holes in UK equality laws · PinkNews
The report comes after former Minister for Women and Equalities Nicky Morgan warned that leaving the EU may cause a ‘legal tangle’ for equality legislation.
She said: “I would think that LGBT rights are so mainstream and respected by the majority of people in this country that that wouldn’t happen.
“But one of the things that hasn’t really been explored is the legal tangle that will result if we were to leave the EU. Some of the anti-discrimination provisions that come from the EU, that we have adopted into UK law… what happens to those?”

Ukip: Britain should be able to send back 'beggars or criminals' from EU | Politics | The Guardian
The UK should have the right not to let EU citizens stay if they “do not work, never pay taxes or are beggars or criminals”, a senior Ukip spokesman has said.

Gerard Batten, an MEP with responsibility for Ukip’s Brexit policy, suggested on Monday that the UK should have the discretion to refuse some EU citizens the right to stay and backed Theresa May’s decision not to give any guarantees without reciprocal deals from other EU countries. [...] Pressed about EU citizens, Batten suggested the UK should have the right to decline to keep some people.

Senior MPs accused of damaging UK with divisive rhetoric | Politics | The Guardian
Senior government ministers including Amber Rudd and Jeremy Hunt are damaging the UK’s standing in the world with their divisive rhetoric, the chair of the Commons Brexit committee, Hilary Benn, has said. [...] Indicating that such language could influence negotiations with the EU, Benn said making pronouncements about what the government would achieve from its discussions would harden attitudes towards the UK among European politicians and officials. The biggest blunder of them all
Keeping all this cautiously in mind, let’s look at the British establishment cock-up. According to one of those involved, this all started at a pizza restaurant at Chicago O’Hare Airport at the time of a Nato conference in 2012, when David Cameron and his closest political allies decided that the only way of scuppering Ukip and the Euro-hostile right of the Conservative Party was to give the British people a referendum.

The brutal way of putting this is that Cameron decided to put party management and tactics ahead of grand strategy, grossly overrated his own negotiating skills, and has been badly bitten in the bottom accordingly. He has often looked like a chess player who plays the next move brilliantly yet fails to see three moves ahead. //&! http://bit.ly/29ncCyG - Michael Gove and Boris friendships. //&! http://bit.ly/29B8Nns - Westminster

"stay campaign is project fear" leave campaigners go without facts. Grayling accused his boss of running a “relentless campaign of fear”. Separately, employment minister Priti Patel, another prominent advocate for Brexit, ramped up the criticism of cabinet secretary Sir Jeremy Heywood’s decision to limit the support civil servants can provide to pro-Brexit ministers, describing it as “unconstitutional”. British people think their media is the most biased and right-wing in Europe - and they're probably right | Voices | The Independent
Just two individuals - Rupert Murdoch and Lord Rothermere - controlled a staggering 52.2 per cent of online and print national news publications in the UK in 2013 [...] All of these newspapers either backed the Conservatives or Ukip in the most recent election and are all considered traditional right-wing publications. If you add up the readership of these right-wing newspapers, they account for a staggering 69 per cent of national newspaper readership in Britain in 2013. Left Foot Forward concluded their analysis by stating that “over three quarters (77.8 per cent) of the press is owned by a handful of billionaires.”

EU referendum: Half-forgotten memories of Boris - BBC News
Two, Mr Johnson's decision can only serve to sharpen the fundamental divisions which are prevalent within the Conservative Party. As I have noted ad nauseam, political parties are coalitions of the more or less willing, generally held together by a wider cause - that cause usually being the desire to secure power. [...] But comparable calculations apply to other politicians. Senior Tories have to weigh their own prospects in the balance. That applies amply to Boris Johnson who, of course, harbours leadership ambitions.

'Absurd' visa rules on income force UK citizens into exile, court told | UK news | The Guardian
UK citizens are being forced into exile by the Home Office’s “irrational and absurd” minimum-income visa requirements, with some couples having no hope of ever being able to live together in Britain, the supreme court has heard. UK nationals must earn more than £18,600 to bring over a non-EU spouse, rising to £22,400 if they have a child who does not have British citizenship, and by an additional £2,400 for each subsequent child. Seven supreme court justices including the court’s deputy president, Lady Hale, will decide after a three-day hearing whether the rules contravene article 8 of the European convention on human rights, covering respect for private and family life. [...] the law barred up to 47% of the working British population from living with a non-EU spouse in their home country. Rush for dual-nationality passports as EU migrants fear Brexit | Politics | The Guardian
AS ALWAYS NOTHING ON THE DETAILS! Off the cuff ideological policy making! // Many [2.4m] expressed concern that without dual nationality, an “out” vote in Britain’s membership referendum could make life as an EU citizen in the UK, or as a UK citizen in the EU, far more problematic. Even the most cautious extrapolation from the survey would suggest that many thousands of Europeans are taking similar action. “The worst is the uncertainty,” said Stephanie Zihms, a German national from near Bremen, who lives in Edinburgh. “Everyone talks about Brexit in big-picture economic or political terms; no one considers what it might mean personally, to so many people,” said Zihms, a post-doctoral academic. “My life is here now. Would I need a visa to visit my family? A minimum number of points to be able to work? No one can say.” //&! Dual Citizenship - bit.ly/21m0DCD & bit.ly/1cYyRaV - only possible wthin EU countries! Mass EU migration into Britain is actually good news for UK economy | UK news | The Guardian
[ symptom! offer of Brexit vote was election move out of fear, UKIP gains ] Far from the unfounded headlines about EU migrants grabbing British jobs, record numbers of British citizens are in work too [...] the quarterly labour market survey – showed that record numbers of British citizens were in work too. Indeed, 1 million more Britons are in work and 850,000 more Europeans are working in Britain since David Cameron became prime minister. [...] Britain should not be seen as a sudden, recent mass invasion to be necessarily feared by every British worker. It is now a fact of life that Britain has been a country of net mass migration every year for the past 20 years. [...] European migrants are not a drain on Britain’s finances; what is more, they actually pay in more in taxes than they take out in state benefits. [...] [60%] are now university graduates [...] For eastern Europeans, 25% are graduates – similar to the proportion in the UK-born workforce. [ below Germany levels? ]
