EU und Mercosur: Warum Jair Bolsonaro plötzlich für den Freihandel ist - SPIEGEL ONLINE
june 2019 by asterisk2a

US-China trade war: Shoe giants urge Trump to end tariffs - BBC News
may 2019 by asterisk2a
Nike and Adidas call for end to US-China trade war
Some 173 companies, including the footwear giants Nike and Adidas, have written to US President Donald Trump to urge him to reverse his decision to raise tariffs to 25% on Chinese goods worth $200bn (£157.3bn). They call the move "unfathomable", arguing it will hit working-class consumers hard. Mr Trump has told firms they should make more of their goods in the US. So who loses out as a result of the trade war?

Unpaid TSA screeners shouldn’t fear the infamous air traffic controllers union precedent.
january 2019 by asterisk2a
Last Monday, I wrote that if any group of government employees could end the shutdown, it would be the 44,000 TSA screeners who keep the nation’s airports running. The next day, Washington Post reporter Robert Costa wrote that GOP lawmakers see a TSA walkout as Trump’s Achilles’ heel—the one factor that could force the president to back down from his demand that lawmakers fund a border wall. [...] President Ronald Reagan ordered them back to work within 48 hours. On Aug. 5, he fired the 11,500 controllers who had not returned to their jobs and banned them from federal employment for life. Airline travel was disrupted for weeks, but there were no accidents. The union was dismantled. Many of the controllers never recovered. It was a defining moment for Reagan and cowed the American labor movement for decades to come.

“We find that 94% of net job growth in the past decade was in the alternative work category,” said Krueger. “And over 60% was due to the [the rise] of independent contractors, freelancers and contract company workers.” In other words, nearly all of the 10 million jobs created between 2005 and 2015 were not traditional nine-to-five employment. - https://www.reddit.com/r/Economics/comments/79jmuh/almost_all_the_10_million_jobs_created_since_2005/

What will cost more than lifting the public sector pay cap? Not lifting it | Faiza Shaheen | Opinion | The Guardian
september 2017 by asterisk2a
[finding efficiencies ... ] Let’s start with costs of recruitment and retention. This is a big one. Job advertising isn’t cheap and new recruits take time to settle in. Last year, a study found there had been a 61% rise in advertising spend since 2010 in secondary schools alone, costing £56m in 2015. Shortages in the health service mean NHS Trusts are paying millions every month to agency and bank nurses to ensure there are adequate levels of staff on wards.
Stress-related leave has also increased in the public sector as workers are understandably getting run down working in understaffed schools and hospital wards. This is just staff – what about the costs to our children of being in classes too big for them to maximise their learning or to a sick individual who has an operation delayed?

Employment tribunal fees unlawful, Supreme Court rules - BBC News
july 2017 by asterisk2a
Fees for those bringing employment tribunal claims have been ruled unlawful, and the government will now have to repay up to £32m to claimants.
The government introduced fees of up to £1,200 in 2013 to reduce the number of malicious and weak cases, but that led to a 79% reduction over three years.
Trade union Unison argued the fees prevented workers accessing justice.
The Ministry of Justice said the government would take immediate steps to stop charging and refund payments.
The Supreme Court ruled the government was acting unlawfully and unconstitutionally when it introduced the fees.

One essential ingredient of resistance, she suggests, is to retain a belief in telling and understanding complex stories, keeping faith with narrative.
One of the questions that Klein’s book does not reach a conclusion about is how conscious Trump is of his shock doctrine tactics. Is he a demagogue in the scheming manner of Putin and Erdoğan, or just a useful idiot for the forces around him?

Donald Trump, Marine Le Pen: Wie Wirtschaftskrisen Populisten helfen - Kolumne - SPIEGEL ONLINE
may 2017 by asterisk2a

Why exporting isn't just about shipping - BBC News
april 2017 by asterisk2a
Barriers to services trade have proved to be harder to deal with.
They come in the form of regulation - not the tariffs or taxes that impinge on commerce in goods. [...] So liberalising services trade is more complicated than it is for goods. [...] The World Trade Organization's rulebook includes something called the General Agreement on Trade in Services, or GATS.
WTO member countries have made commitments during past negotiations about the extent to which they allow foreign suppliers access to their services markets. These vary from country to country and are listed in "schedules" attached to the agreement. [...] EU won't make commitments on allowing foreign suppliers to provide some key publicly funded services, including health and education.

Brexit may leave holes in UK equality laws · PinkNews
april 2017 by asterisk2a
The report comes after former Minister for Women and Equalities Nicky Morgan warned that leaving the EU may cause a ‘legal tangle’ for equality legislation.
She said: “I would think that LGBT rights are so mainstream and respected by the majority of people in this country that that wouldn’t happen.
“But one of the things that hasn’t really been explored is the legal tangle that will result if we were to leave the EU. Some of the anti-discrimination provisions that come from the EU, that we have adopted into UK law… what happens to those?”

[ no moderation, moderation is gone. Global Britain is here. Sarah Champion: Brexit is a crucial moment in our nation’s history – so let’s use it to be ambitious on equalities | LabourList

Given that equality is so central to EU law, and given the emphasis that has been placed by the prime minister on equality since her speech outside No 10 when she first entered Downing Street, it came as a surprise to me that the word “equality” does not appear once in the government’s white paper.
There is a brief mention of women’s rights in relation to maternity leave, but no mention of race, disability or sexuality and gender identity.
This cannot be credibly perceived as a deal that works for everyone in Britain if women, BAME, disabled people and LGBT communities aren’t even referenced in the white paper.

UK growth forecast upgraded amid warning over inflation | Business | The Guardian
february 2017 by asterisk2a
NIESR said it remained convinced that the economy would slow this year as higher inflation reduced consumer spending power. “We expect the composition of growth to rebalance towards net trade, as the headwinds facing households from the erosion of their real incomes weigh on consumer spending while the depreciation of sterling supports net trade,” said Simon Kirby, NIESR’s head of macroeconomic forecasting. [...] The thinktank said its economic modelling showed that the benefits of the free-trade deals the government hopes to sign with the US, Canada and leading emerging economies would be dwarfed by the damage caused to exports of both goods and services to the EU.

Brexit has allowed the banks to get off Britain's naughty step | Business | The Guardian
january 2017 by asterisk2a
The even better news for the banks is that they are no longer hated. Far from it. Much of the concern about how the UK will survive outside the EU has centred on the future of the City. For years, the banks have been trying to find a way of getting themselves off the public’s naughty step. Brexit has provided them with an opportunity that has been seized with relish. The City has played the post-referendum game masterfully. [...] The recession that the banks caused and the austerity that resulted created the sense of “them and us” – the notion of an unbalanced and unequal Britain – that led to Brexit. [...] constant demands that the government secures passporting rights to allow UK authorised institutions to operate freely across the EU27.

Inquiry launched into UK gender laws amid fears over Brexit effect | World news | The Guardian
january 2017 by asterisk2a
[ one particular NHS already breaking EU overtime work directive ] Areas of equality law to be examined include measures to guarantee equal pay, protection for part-time workers and during pregnancy, and combating so-called intersectional discrimination, where someone faces potential disadvantage for not just their gender but another area, for example race or religion. [...] While the government had promised to protect equality and the rights of workers following departure from the EU, Smethers said, the concern was that some protections could be lost almost inadvertently amid wider changes. [...] “The real worry we’ve got is that those kind of assurances are actually quite superficial, and they are probably a second order commitment compared to the need to secure a competitive economy, and how we compete if we’re outside the trading bloc,” Smethers said. &! WH advisors Bannon and Miller overruled the Dept of Homeland Security's judgment the travel ban should not apply to Green Card holders // http://edition.cnn.com/2017/01/28/politics/donald-trump-travel-ban/index.html - Trump's unilateral moves, which have drawn the ire of human rights groups and prompted protests at US airports, reflect the President's desire to quickly make good on his campaign promises. But they also encapsulate the pitfalls of an administration largely operated by officials with scant federal experience.

Theresa May and Trump: PM shows lengths she'll go to for Britain | John Crace | Politics | The Guardian
january 2017 by asterisk2a
The body language could hardly have been more awkward as Theresa May and Donald Trump posed for their blind date in front of the bust of Winston Churchill in the Oval Office. The prime minister kept her distance and looked faintly embarrassed, as if it was only just dawning on her that the main reason she was the first foreign leader to meet the US president was because all the others had thought better of it. That and the fact she was a bit desperate. Britain doesn’t have as many friends as it used to.

Never mind the optics, Theresa May’s US dash was mortifying | Opinion | The Guardian
january 2017 by asterisk2a
this hasty visit smacks of desperation // He will have seen May as that most desperate of creatures: the housebuyer who rashly sold her old house before she had found a new one. Having tossed away Britain’s keys to the European single market, she will soon be homeless – and Trump knows it. For all the niceties – May’s shrewd deployment of a royal invitation for a state visit and her compliment to the president on his “stunning election victory”, flattery which saw Trump glow a brighter shade of orange – he will have seen May as a sucker who needs to make a deal. And he will look forward to naming his price.

May to discuss how to boost US-UK migration with Trump, say sources | Politics | The Guardian

Skills and infrastructure top priority in industrial strategy, say UK firms | Business | The Guardian
january 2017 by asterisk2a
The government’s new industrial strategy must focus on improving skills and infrastructure in Britain rather than bailing out struggling large companies, according to a survey of business leaders.
The findings suggest businesses are not in favour of rescue deals such as the government’s proposed support for the steel industry. Theresa May, the prime minister, and Greg Clark, the business, energy and industrial strategy secretary, are expected to unveil an industrial strategy for the UK next week. They will set out the government’s approach to key industries and issues such as infrastructure, skills, regulation and research and development.

Brexit: Australia eyes relaxed UK immigration under trade deal - BBC News
january 2017 by asterisk2a
[ For trade deal, more relaxed immigration and Visa for Australians ... LOL LOL LOL ] The UK has been told it will have to relax its immigration rules for Australians if it wants a free trade deal with Canberra.
Alexander Downer, Australia's high commissioner to the UK, said the country would want better access for business people working in the UK before reaching a post-Brexit deal.
He said it might be possible to strike a deal within eight months of Brexit.

May can think big all she likes. Britain’s about to find out just how small it is | Rafael Behr | Opinion | The Guardian
january 2017 by asterisk2a
The UK struggles to see itself in perspective because it is richer and more powerful than most countries, yet so much less influential than it used to be. [...] May’s speech on Tuesday was meant to be a beacon illuminating Britain’s future outside the EU. But, coming days before Trump’s inauguration, it should be read also as an unwitting requiem for the global order that is passing away. It imagined a place where the contours of power are neatly defined and stable, where Britain has freedom to choose its friends and decide its status in the world. [...] Our interests matter, but probably not that much more than Belgian interests currently matter in Whitehall. [ EU a political project first ... ] It’s a question of perspective. For decades Britain has struggled to get a comfortable sense of its scale relative to the rest of the world. We are about to find out how big – or small – we really are.

A big fear during the TTIP negotiations was that US insurers and health providers would undermine the NHS by pressing for open access to the UK “market” in medical care. “A rushed trade deal with Trump may give ministers cover for their dangerous Brexit strategy but it will not hide the risk that this could be a Trojan horse for NHS privatisation,” warned the shadow health secretary, Jonathan Ashworth on Monday.

USA is at war in Yemen. Is a humanitarian catastrophe. Yet another civil war in Middle East. As in Syria/Irak. And Afghanistan. Under radar screen of international community. United Nations. [bc Saudis own middle east hegemony aspirations! ... oil dollars!/petro dollars are their insurance!] [ France UK USA sell arms to SA ] Drone strikes (civilian casualties and mistaken targets) create anti-american sentiment. Saudi Arabia opposed Iran agreement deeply! Is this all "obscure." Or is it all absurd (as is life, see psychology on existentialism). Creating oh, dear (oh dearism (see Adam Curtis, throwing hands over head giving up to understand followed by covering ones eyes, ears, mouth). Bc it is easier in a selfish world where collectivism and activism has been buried under trillons of selfies and handbags for one season. A hard truth for Leave voters: Brexit means big government
july 2016 by asterisk2a
Britain has seen a renaissance in jobs since 2013, of that there is no doubt. But most of those extra jobs were among the self-employed or fell into categories that can only be described as insecure and low-paid. When companies finally took the plunge and advertised full-time jobs from 2014 onwards, around a third went to migrants. [...] It is this mostly older group of workers across the developed world, worried about their pay, pensions and conditions of employment, that want to slam the brakes on globalisation and reject the remedy proposed by big business: greater labour-market flexibility and only limited job protections. [ Globalisation as a great rebalancing of the world economy between the west and the rest (BRIC and co) ] [...] Only government can provide the cure, with a commitment to invest where the private sector cannot or will not go.
