Why am I so lonely when I have 565 friends? - BBC Three
Eight in 10 under 34 year-olds identify as 'always or often' lonely.
On top of that, stats say Britain is the loneliest country in the EU. Loneliness is such a big issue that it was even included in the Conservative, Labour and UKIP snap election manifestos.
But, why? And why are Britain’s young people bearing the brunt of it?

Al Jazeera America to shut down cable news channel - BBC News
Al Jazeera promised to expand its coverage of the US online after the channel shuts down in April. The network replaced Current TV, a network founded by former US Vice President Al Gore. The Qatar-based broadcaster bought Current TV for around $500 million (£308 million). Al Jazeera America was available in about 60 million American homes. Politico notes that the channel reached an average of 19,000 viewers each day in 2015, far fewer than its competitors. The channel struggled with internal turmoil, as well, including multiple discrimination lawsuits that ended up ousting its founding CEO.

But, even without Jobs, it cannot be ignored. There simply is no other company that combines such a high-quality hardware line with such well-regarded software platforms. A faltering Samsung has the former, but not the latter. A strong and admirable Google has the latter, but not the former. If you didn’t believe that before, this week’s event made it crystal clear, with once-bitter rivals like Microsoft and Adobe showing up onstage to boast about how well their products worked with new Apple hardware and software. NBCUniversal Buys Big Chunks of Vox Media and BuzzFeed | Re/code

That means, among other things, that they will collaborate on digital advertising, will work together on video advertising and video programming, and that you will likely see Vox Media employees more frequently on NBCU-owned networks like CNBC. (Re/code already had and continues to have a news partnership with CNBC). [...] Buzzfeed [apparently has] a revenue goal of $250 million in 2015. Chart Shows Pay TV Subscribers Shrinking | Re/code
Again: There are plenty of reasons to argue why the TV business is not the newspaper business, or the music business. For starters, many people consume an enormous amount of TV every week, and something like 100 million people pay (a lot) of money for TV every month. They’re probably going to keep doing that, in one form or another, for a long time. But the notion that the TV Industrial Complex could fend off the Internet without changing the way it sells its product to consumers and advertisers clearly doesn’t hold water anymore.

Apple won’t release a television set, and that’s okay | PandoDaily
[F]or now it seems to have renewed its focus on its set-top box, which will reportedly receive a pretty substantial upgrade at Apple’s WWDC in June. It makes more sense for Apple to create something that plugs into consumers’ existing television sets than it does for the company to release a television set that will have to compete with “good enough” and premium products alike. Apple doesn’t enter commoditized markets. It allows other companies to fumble with new product categories — smartphones, tablets, smartwatches — and then releases a product of its own when it believes the timing is right. Are those categories eventually commoditized? Yep. There are good phones that cost less than $300 without a contract. Tablets are getting cheaper and cheaper. Smartwatches will eventually fall in price, too, assuming anybody buys them. // the champagne gold iPhone was a start ( youtu.be/Saf1b9KNt ), then came the apple watch in gold and the new MacBook in champagne gold at the same time.

Monica Lewinsky: The price of shame - YouTube
In 1998, says Monica Lewinsky, “I was Patient Zero of losing a personal reputation on a global scale almost instantaneously.” Today, the kind of online public shaming she went through has become a constant. In a brave talk, she takes a look at our “culture of humiliation,” in which online shame equals dollar signs — and demands a different way.

Author And YouTuber John Green Tells Advertisers To Stop Worrying About Eyeballs | TechCrunch
John Green talked about how he and his brother Hank built a devoted following of “nerdfighters” on YouTube, contributing to the enormous success of his book. In fact, they’ve built an online video business with 30 employees. But Green’s ad revenue is outweighed by things like crowdfunding and merchandise — and that ad revenue is falling by 5 percent every year. He acknowledged that’s not true for everyone on YouTube. Nonetheless, he argued, “Many of the strongest communities are dramatically undervalued by advertisers, forcing YouTubers to find other paths.” [...] And sure, distraction is fine, but Green doesn’t see himself and other “passionate YouTubers” as being in “the distraction business.” Instead, the best shows are in “the community business,” and he watches them because they help him “grapple with and consider the problems and questions way down deep there in the darkness. [...] focusing on eyeballs is a crummy way to measure the success and value [...] eyeball biz shrinking!

Apple wants content companies to bear streaming costs of its television service | PandoDaily
Maybe the company really does want to focus only on hardware and software. And it would be better for Apple, content companies, and consumers for the service not to fall into the same trap that Netflix has been dragged down into. But I suspect that allowing programmers to do what they like with viewer data, asking companies to build their own streaming infrastructure, and otherwise giving them control over this service is also motivated by Apple’s desperation.

BBC News - No long-term future for BBC licence fee, MPs say
[ Germany has similar set-up called GEMA, GenY and Millennials are at crossroads with GEMA in Germany because how it is set-up an how they consume their media on the road and at home, which doesn't reflect GEMA at all and isn't fair. And try watching a music video on YT, GEMA blocks all music on YT. ] // In light of changing technology and audience habits, the committee said "we do not see a long-term future for the licence fee in its current form". Any "profound changes" - such as abolishing the licence fee - should not be rushed, the report said. But it did say the BBC "must prepare for the possibility of a change in the 2020s. "We recommend that as a minimum the licence fee must be amended to cover catch-up television as soon as possible." It should also no longer be a criminal offence to avoid paying the licence fee, the report said.

"The main thing that has caused companies to fail, in my view, is that they missed the future," - Larry Page At TED - Business Insider
"The main thing that has caused companies to fail, in my view, is that they missed the future," Page said. This is why Google is going full steam ahead working on a variety of projects.  "When we bought Android, it was small and I felt guilty working on it, but it was smart, it was the future," he said.

BBC News - Google buys up games controller firm Green Throttle Games
Mobile Market is saturated. Now comes the fight for the living room and making the living room/TV/Movie/Surfing experience more like 21st Century. And cable companies (middle man) will become obsolete in the coming years. "More recently, the company announced the low-cost Chromecast dongle. The device allows content from a mobile device to be played out on a television. Joining Google from Green Throttle Games will be co-founders Matt Crowley and Karl Townsend. Mr Townsend was lead engineer for the Palm Pilot, a pioneering handheld device. + http://pando.com/2014/03/11/google-buys-the-ghost-of-green-throttle-games-as-tv-arms-race-gathers-speed/

VC Stewart Alsop: How I pissed off Steve Jobs - YouTube
Steve Job's last big gig was designing and figuring out the Apple TV, where TV is an app and the Device, what is known as TV is a super-size iMac. A Personal Computer. Plus they probably will make the iPad and Apple TV / iTV connect to each other so you can use the iPas and iPhone as 2nd Screen and do social media and surfing and sharing while watching TV. // Google acquisition of Nest Lab is also talent acquisition - Tony Fadell - a former Apple Execs. But he is a Product Guy and those are valuable, and Apple competed with Google for Nest Labs and thus Tony Fadell. Larry Page needs Fadell to improve Google's product line and future products and teach other Googlers 'product development, management and how to think about it correctly.' >> Android, Nexus, Google Chrome, Google Glasses, Google Car, Google ChromeCast. Warum Fernsehen unzufrieden macht - Freie Presse

Charlie Sheen Could Teach Wall Street a Lesson: Matthew Lynn - Bloomberg
And yet if there is a single lesson to be learned from the last decade, it is that the public -- or the customer -- is more forgiving. In fact, the more outrageously a celebrity behaves, and the less contrition he or she shows, the more we find them alluring. It pays to be bad, and slightly nutty as well.

Sheen has clearly struck a nerve. His over-the-top partying isn’t just amusing. It is the kind of escapism that audiences want. Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards has been an iconic figure for 40 years with his excessive lifestyle, so it wasn’t surprising to see that his autobiography topped the best-seller charts over Christmas. We don’t want celebrities who come across as drab and boring.
Kate Moss was photographed taking drugs, her sponsors ran for cover. But Moss soon came back as popular as ever
Sheen is entitled to a private life. He’s not an elected official and doesn’t offer moral guidance to anyone. If he wants to party like a wild animal, that’s his business.

Google and Partners Seek Foothold in the Living Room - NYTimes.com
For Google, the project is a pre-emptive move to get a foothold in the living room as more consumers start exploring ways to bring Web content to their television sets. Google wants to aggressively ensure that its services, in particular its search and advertising systems, play a central role.

“Google wants to be everywhere the Internet is so they can put ads there,” said one of the people with knowledge of the project.

Web-TV Divide Is Back in Focus With NBC Sale - NYTimes.com
“If you disrupt the consumer experience, you’re in trouble,”

The scramble by TV companies to preserve its ad model while giving consumers choice — what Comcast’s chief executive called in interviews Thursday “anytime, anywhere media” — mirrors the efforts of newspapers, magazines and radio companies to wring more money from digital media. But all are facing some entrenched habits.
