Hillary Clinton's book has a clear message: don't blame me | Thomas Frank | Opinion | The Guardian
She seems to have been almost totally unprepared for the outburst of populist anger that characterized 2016, an outburst that came under half a dozen different guises: trade, outsourcing, immigration, opiates, deindustrialization, and the recent spectacle of Wall Street criminals getting bailed out. It wasn’t the issues that mattered so much as the outrage, and Donald Trump put himself in front of it. Clinton couldn’t. [...] But by and large, Clinton’s efforts to understand populism always get short-circuited, probably because taking it seriously might lead one to conclude that working people have a legitimate beef with her and the Democratic party. &! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-41244474 &! https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/sep/12/hillary-clinton-supporters-memoir-book

Naomi Klein: ‘Trump is an idiot, but don’t underestimate how good he is at that’ | Books | The Guardian
One essential ingredient of resistance, she suggests, is to retain a belief in telling and understanding complex stories, keeping faith with narrative.

One of the questions that Klein’s book does not reach a conclusion about is how conscious Trump is of his shock doctrine tactics. Is he a demagogue in the scheming manner of Putin and Erdoğan, or just a useful idiot for the forces around him?

Donald Trump, Marine Le Pen: Wie Wirtschaftskrisen Populisten helfen - Kolumne - SPIEGEL ONLINE

this hasty visit smacks of desperation // He will have seen May as that most desperate of creatures: the housebuyer who rashly sold her old house before she had found a new one. Having tossed away Britain’s keys to the European single market, she will soon be homeless – and Trump knows it. For all the niceties – May’s shrewd deployment of a royal invitation for a state visit and her compliment to the president on his “stunning election victory”, flattery which saw Trump glow a brighter shade of orange – he will have seen May as a sucker who needs to make a deal. May can think big all she likes. Britain’s about to find out just how small it is | Rafael Behr | Opinion | The Guardian
The UK struggles to see itself in perspective because it is richer and more powerful than most countries, yet so much less influential than it used to be. [...] May’s speech on Tuesday was meant to be a beacon illuminating Britain’s future outside the EU. But, coming days before Trump’s inauguration, it should be read also as an unwitting requiem for the global order that is passing away. It imagined a place where the contours of power are neatly defined and stable, where Britain has freedom to choose its friends and decide its status in the world. [...] Our interests matter, but probably not that much more than Belgian interests currently matter in Whitehall. [ EU a political project first ... ] It’s a question of perspective. For decades Britain has struggled to get a comfortable sense of its scale relative to the rest of the world. We are about to find out how big – or small – we really are.

Health
A big fear during the TTIP negotiations was that US insurers and health providers would undermine the NHS by pressing for open access to the UK “market” in medical care. “A rushed trade deal with Trump may give ministers cover for their dangerous Brexit strategy but it will not hide the risk that this could be a Trojan horse for NHS privatisation,” warned the shadow health secretary, Jonathan Ashworth on Monday.

"Markets Crash When They're Oversold" | Zero Hedge
Technology Destroying Jobs + While the big driver of the decline in economic growth since the 1980’s has been a structural change from a manufacturing based economy (high multiplier effect) to a service based one (low multiplier effect), it has been exacerbated by the increase in household debt to offset the reduction in wage growth to maintain the standard of living. This is shown clearly in the chart below. [...] In fact, each job created in energy-related areas has had a “ripple effect” of creating 2.8 jobs elsewhere in the economy from piping to coatings, trucking and transportation, restaurants and retail. Simply put, lower oil and gasoline prices may have a bigger detraction on the economy than the “savings” provided to consumers.

No mention of climate change in the TPP: Sierra Club report shows “dirty deal” means environmental disaster - Salon.com
The Trans-Pacific Partnership will "fuel the climate crisis" warns the environmental organization in a new report [...] Environmental and labor organizations have warned for years that the TPP, which has been characterized as “NAFTA on steroids,” will mean disaster for the climate and for the economy. “A Dirty Deal: How the Trans-Pacific Partnership Threatens Our Climate,” the Sierra Club’s new report, details just how disastrous it could be. [...] The Sierra Club’s report finds that the TPP will do the following: “Empower fossil fuel corporations to challenge climate policies in private tribunals” [...] he deal will give foreign corporations the ability to sue governments for implementing environmental policies that do not meet companies’ “expectations” or that could make their investments less profitable.

[...] //&! bbc.in/1X133Ih

Article: On The Need For A Diagnosis And Cure | OpEdNews
We need a correct diagnosis before we can cure the disease. "Corporate sovereignty deals, including the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the Canada-China Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPPA), empower corporations to the extent that government legislation becomes subordinated to corporate profits. Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS)[i] clauses-- originally crafted by imperial nations to keep their former colonies economically and politically subservient -- are a particularly odious aspect of these deals."

It’s well-known that the ‘corporate lobby’ are a powerful force in politics. Nowhere is this clearer than in the debate on TTIP, the free trade treaty between the US and EU currently going through the European Parliament. Between 2012 and 2013, 92 per cent of the lobbying on TTIP came from the private sector. Just 4 per cent was public interest groups.

Ex-health secretary Andrew Lansley to advise firms on healthcare reforms | Politics | The Guardian
Andrew Lansley, the architect of the coalition government’s efforts to privatise parts of the NHS, has taken a job advising corporate clients on healthcare reforms despite David Cameron’s pledge to close the “revolving door” between Whitehall and the private sector. The management consultants Bain & Company took on Lord Lansley in August. The newly ennobled Conservative peer also plans to become an active associate of a “strategic communications consultancy” set up by his wife and will advise on health and social care. His appointments will raise eyebrows because Lansley, who was health secretary for two years until 2012, is still blamed by many in the health service for the Health and Social Care Act, which critics said increased the privatisation of the NHS.

Robots are coming for your job. That might not be bad news
The problem with automation isn’t technology. The problem is capitalism. // [ Deflationary pressure, 3bn people in developing world and frontier markets unemployed, waiting to join workforce. ] [ who buys the gadgets and widgets when half the world is unemployed ] // This time, as Martin Ford argues in Rise of The Robots, education and upscaling won’t help us. There will simply be fewer jobs to go around, as everything from accountancy to journalism will be done faster, cheaper and more efficiently by machines. The result, as Jerry Kaplan agrees in Humans Need Not Apply, is that billions will be left destitute – unless we radically rethink our way of keeping people fed.

Working-class Americans feel screwed. I heard it across the entire country | US news | The Guardian
Donald Trump has exposed the opportunity gulf between those who make policy and those who live it – turning immigrants into scapegoats in the process [...] The disappointment, although often wrapped in anger over immigration, is at its core about diminished opportunity. It is consistent with the economic reality that has persisted over the last three decades: except for the very rich, Americans haven’t seen their wealth increase. The people I talked to are not entirely wrong; their particular job prospects and their particular wealth have been harmed. [...] The angry are mostly people who work with their hands, who feel stuck in a vise tightening from two sides: there is a greater number of people looking for the same jobs and there are fewer jobs available, since many of these jobs having moved overseas.
