Boris Johnson Has Been Privately Talking To Steve Bannon As They Plot Their Next Moves
Boris Johnson, who portrayed himself as liberal, pro-immigration and cosmopolitan when London mayor, now chums up to this molting fascist teapot. The man really is utterly void of principle.
One is a potential frontrunner to be the next UK prime minister; the other wants to help nationalists win in Europe. BuzzFeed News reports for the first time that they're in regular contact.

Steve Bannon: 'We're going to war in the South China Sea ... no doubt' | US news | The Guardian
The United States and China will fight a war within the next 10 years over islands in the South China Sea, and “there’s no doubt about that”. At the same time, the US will be in another “major” war in the Middle East.

Those are the views – nine months ago at least – of one of the most powerful men in Donald Trump’s administration, Steve Bannon, the former head of far-right news website Breitbart who is now chief strategist at the White House.

The article described how Mr Bannon, who until recently ran the far-right news site Breitbart News, had taken a major role in national security policy that usually would only be occupied by senior generals. The Myth of Valley DoucheBaggery - John Battelle's Search Blog
But I think our industry culture is moving far faster than the writers at Silicon Valley might wish to believe. I think we’re seeing the rise of a new culture, one that rejects arrogance and the founder worship which breeds it. Inevitable outliers aside, the Valley and technology culture I experience every day in my work at NewCo is one of passion, sweat, earnestness, and good intentions. Sure, we all fuck up. And sure, the press (especially, not surprisingly, the press in New York) has a field day when someone does. But by and large, the teams making companies like Slack, LiveRamp, Medium, Earnest, MetroMile, Lyft, Okta, Pinterest, and hundreds more are damn fine people, and they are dedicating their lives to making something that creates positive change – a product or service that makes the world a better place (even if it’s in a small way). [...] When you’re facing existential threat, our tolerance for douchebaggery in the name of making more money at any cost, ....

What I Learned This Week About Tim Cook’s Apple | Re/code
[ always along the motto: extension of you, part of you. The new Apple under Jobs was NOT an overnight success! It build on its differentiation, strong base, a cult, a Tribe, 1000 True Fans, and build on it stride by stride. Most capitalistic company out of SV, no counter-culture out of largest corp on world. & can pull of iAd coup because it has monopsony! & Duopoly w Android. ] Many people love Apple, others despise it. But, even without Jobs, it cannot be ignored. There simply is no other company that combines such a high-quality hardware line with such well-regarded software platforms. A faltering Samsung has the former, but not the latter. A strong and admirable Google has the latter, but not the former. If you didn’t believe that before, this week’s event made it crystal clear, with once-bitter rivals like Microsoft and Adobe showing up onstage to boast about how well their products worked with new Apple hardware and software. Alex Gibney’s New Documentary Paints An Ambivalent Portrait Of Steve Jobs | TechCrunch
It opens with footage of the mass outpouring of grief after Jobs’ death in 2011, and the rest of the movie asks: Why did people feel so much attachment to the CEO of an enormous tech company? And is Jobs really worthy of such admiration? Gibney isn’t trying to convince people that they should stop buying Apple products — after all, he’s still got that iPhone. Instead the aim is to raise questions about Jobs’ values and the influence those values had on the rest of Silicon Valley (where Gibney often sees a similar “rough-and-tumble libertarian vibe”). [ ie lying to woz that he got paid only $700 ] &! theatln.tc/1EE17wR &! on.recode.net/1NdvHif - In his mind, his movie is a necessary counterbalance to overly positive portrayals of Apple’s iconic leader. Apple does not fight on Windows nor Google (Android) turf. It created (fact) a new category. Redefined the category of the Gadget, of the Phone. Of the Laptop. Of the Workstation. This (newest phone/better technology) is not just for the Geeks or Nerds. This is a status symbol you are seen with every day (Apple Watch, iPhone, MacBook (2015 version) at the Coffee shop and elsewhere). That person made a deliberate concious or not decision to buy the Apple product at that price. -vs- GNU/Linux or Windows or Android whatever for the same basic utility at a much affordable price. Apple is launching search engine to destroy Google — and you’re already using it | Calacanis.com
“Paid Inclusion” is basically the ads that consumers think are content, but are really ads. It’s not to give inner city kids a helping hand; it’s not to make mom-and-pop dreams a reality; it’s not to help nice guys. It’s to maximize returns and fund companies that have an outsized chance of creating billion-dollar plus outcomes in a decade or less. There is a certain personality type that frequently builds these companies—a mix of outsized arrogance, steel-eyed determination, and even some element of delusion. Rational thinkers don’t usually think they can upend whole industries. People who get impacted by social pressure will be talked out of an idea long before it comes to fruition.

My Dad kicked ass at Wii bowling: Or, why it’s okay to compete with Travis Kalanick | PandoDaily
We investors would never bet against the CEO! And yet, if you consider the most respected tech CEOs like Steve Jobs and Jeff Bezos, they aren’t just CEOs investors doubted. Their very leadership is defined in their defiance of what investors wanted. On that front, the love Uber investors have for TK is itself a warning sign for the company. Here’s what I’d say to Uber investors: You own part of what is potentially one of the most powerful corporate combustion engines ever devised by mankind. Congratulations! But it’s both stable and unstable, and it could end up blasting up into uncharted space or blowing up in your face. And please don’t portray your loved ones as losers to puff up the legend of TK. As I have been reminded time and again: thinking about hyping an already overvalued company? Good luck. [TK doesnt do conservative nor gratitude, he had his battles with a 'mediocre' outcome b4. TKs past experience & grudges are imprinted on Uber] [walking on a double edged samurai sword]

Unrest at Nest Labs
Coming from Dropcam, which boasted a much more egalitarian culture, a clash seems all but inevitable. Yet these employees also suggest that the differences between Dropcam and Nest are not just stylistic. One Nest employee says that Nest, which employs between 700 and 800 people, will see roughly double the revenue of Dropcam this year but that Dropcam, which employs 100 people, is growing its revenue eight times as fast, thanks largely to its subscription business. Many employees were reportedly disappointed to sell to Google because “we were firing on all cylinders, with a sensor product about to be released and an outdoor camera about to come out in 2015 and great sales. It just felt like we’d been chopped off at the knees.”

Killing the Messenger at Mozilla, by Tim Chevalier | Model View Culture
The tech industry has a hero problem, and during my time there, Mozilla was no exception. Famously, Eich developed the JavaScript language in ten days, in order to meet a Netscape release deadline. This is a textbook example of how tech valorizes individual "heroes", always male, who can put in intense effort on a problem over a short period of time but not work with others on a solution in the long term. I have no doubt that Eich's work on JavaScript was solid, but I also see no reason to think that he was the only person who could have done the same thing. In fact, there are probably people who could have done better, but were not accorded the privileges in life needed for doing so. As far as I'm aware, Eich himself has maintained a humble attitude about his achievements, but the same can't be said of his fans. [...] Tacit acceptance of silencing and of abuse of power runs throughout our culture, but that doesn't make it okay in the specific instance of tech culture. [... >>]

Apple’s Eddy Cue and Jimmy Iovine Interview Video | Re/code
min 54:35 - making Apple future proof. focus. culture. ... creating value with ordinary products via detail, brand, design, and less friction. Question is, will they make Apple a distinctive luxury tech brand because of the comoditisation of hardware, software & design. + Last sentence; Apple being able to move fast. How? With someone flat (less vertical than usual ;)), tightly woven - VPs, Execs and C-Suit??!! Is that a something for success!? Respecting each other and being also somewhat friends to sometimes hang out with?! Because everyone else on the outside is gunning for you, daily. Because you have the biggest target on your back of them all. Is that the sauce that will make them be able to turn the brand identity into a luxury tech one with big big margins everybody else dreams of? Being able to pull this off because of the detail, design, status symbol, frustration free tech?

DLD NYC 14 - Winners/Losers in a Digital Age (Scott Galloway) - YouTube
Apple knows that competition is catching up faster and faster in terms of design and functionality etc etc. They hired 2 fashion people already (burberry and from LVHM). And to differentiate the brand further (price/status symbol - above middle class) and to keep selling it's Apple Products ... including wearables (Watch & Headphone) they hired those key people or b(r)ought them into the mothership. They could have long ago bought personal cloud storage companies and other stuff to add to its portfolio bla bla bla.... but that 'Software', you can't display - show off - walking around downtown manhatten. Wearables, phones, tablets - you can. ... Apple focuses on their core competencies - software like iTunes is only 2nd class, that is why it still doesn't stream. >> “They want Jimmy and they want Dre,” said the source. “He’s got fashion and culture completely locked up.” ( http://techcrunch.com/2014/05/22/apples-beats-deal-is-happening-and-its-a-dre-acquihire/ ) + !!! v=NP0P2BT0vTc !!!

VC Stewart Alsop: How I pissed off Steve Jobs - YouTube
Steve Job's last big gig was designing and figuring out the Apple TV, where TV is an app and the Device, what is known as TV is a super-size iMac. A Personal Computer. Plus they probably will make the iPad and Apple TV / iTV connect to each other so you can use the iPas and iPhone as 2nd Screen and do social media and surfing and sharing while watching TV. // Google acquisition of Nest Lab is also talent acquisition - Tony Fadell - a former Apple Execs. But he is a Product Guy and those are valuable, and Apple competed with Google for Nest Labs and thus Tony Fadell. Larry Page needs Fadell to improve Google's product line and future products and teach other Googlers 'product development, management and how to think about it correctly.' >> Android, Nexus, Google Chrome, Google Glasses, Google Car, Google ChromeCast. Jeff Bezos Bought The Washington Post For One Thing: Distribution ⚙ Co.Labs ⚙ code + community
[surrounding yourself with smarter people] In some sense you wouldn’t even be human anymore. People like Jeff are better regarded as hyper-intelligent aliens with a tangential interest in human affairs . . . Trust me folks, I saw this happen time and again, for years. Jeff Bezos has all these incredibly intelligent, experienced domain experts surrounding him at huge meetings, and on a daily basis he thinks of shit that they never saw coming. It’s a guaranteed facepalm fest. [...] Purpose-built distribution networks for different kinds of content are beginning to solidify into infrastructure, just as e-commerce did 10 years ago. And if we’ve learned anything about Bezos, it’s that he loves to own his own infrastructure and leverage it into new kinds of business we can’t even imagine right now.

RSA Shorts - The Power of Quiet - YouTube
Author Susan Cain shines a spotlight on introverts and reveals how over time our society has come to look to extroverts as leaders. Not suggesting that one is better than the other, Susan argues that the world needs an equal space between introverts and extroverts; that an innovative, creative world wouldn't be the same without the two coming together.
