Redaction error reveals FBI did target Lavabit to spy on Edward Snowden
A redaction oversight by the US government has finally confirmed that the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s targeting of secure email service Lavabit was used specifically to spy on Edward Snowden.

Ladar Levison, creator of the email service, which was founded on a basis of private communications secured by encryption and had 410,000 users, was served a sealed order in 2013 forcing him to aid the FBI in its surveillance of Snowden.

Levison was ordered to install a surveillance package on his company’s servers and later to turn over Lavabit’s encryption keys so that it would give the FBI the ability to read the most secure messages that the company offered. He was also ordered not to disclose the fact to third-parties.

Can we really trust judges to protect reporters' confidential sources? | Media | The Guardian
Journalists won’t even be safe to talk email whistleblowers from a coffee shop [...] In stressing that the powers would not be used for mass surveillance, May said the onus would be on the home office to show necessity and proportionality. And who would decide whether that was justified? Judicial commissioners, she said. They would operate a “double-lock” authorisation process on intercept and bulk interception warrants in order to prevent intrusive snooping. [ old boys club with career interests? titles, pensions? ] But will this judicial oversight provide enough protection? That’s the key worry for journalists who now know that there is nowhere for them to conceal their communications with confidential sources. Gleichzeitig sagte Innenministerin May, sie wolle die Aufsicht über die Geheimdienste stärken. What Clinton Got Wrong About Snowden
First, Snowden is a whistleblower, not a leaker. Whistleblowing is the act of bringing to light evidence of waste, fraud, abuse, law-breaking, or dangers to public health or safety. Snowden did exactly that when he divulged proof that the National Security Agency was illegally snooping on all of us.

Google’s $6 Billion Miscalculation on the EU - Bloomberg Business
via https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10021018 // Google declined to make its executives available for on-the-record interviews, but several concede that the company was caught off guard by the intensity of European criticism, in large part because of its broad popularity with users. Google is so relied upon that many people casually assert that the most prevalent search term on rival Bing is, in fact, “Google.” (Microsoft declines to confirm this.) [...] The more Europeans rely on Google, however, the more they’ve come to fear it, making it an easy target for politicians. Last November members of the European Parliament voted 384 to 174 for a symbolic proposal to break up the search giant into two separate pieces—its monolithic search engine and everything else. Snowden documents show spy agencies exploiting issues with China’s most popular browser | PandoDaily
New reports from CBC News and the Intercept show that intelligence agencies in Canada, the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand exploited vulnerabilities in Alibaba’s UC Browser to surveil 500 million people. The agencies also planned to use various app stores to distribute their spyware. The reports indicate that UC Browser offered up all kinds of information about its users. This is notable because it’s the most popular Web browser in China and has an estimated 500 million users, making it a valuable target for spying. The problems are said to be limited to the Android version of the Web browser.

A court managed what the complicit UK press couldn't: force GCHQ to tell the truth | Trevor Timm | Comment is free | The Guardian
A UK court vindicated Edward Snowden’s whistleblowing on Friday by ruling that the secrecy surrounding one of the programs he exposed was, in fact, illegal. The decision is more evidence that not only were the Snowden revelations necessary and justified, but are also slowly forcing changes in both US and UK, even as both governments fiercely resist. In a stunning ruling, the Investigatory Powers Tribunal (IPT) – which oversees (and usually rubber stamps) Britain’s spy agencies – declared that the intelligence-sharing rules between the NSA and GCHQ (Britain’s NSA equivalent and partner-in-crime) governing their mass surveillance program violated UK human rights laws because they were kept secret for so long. [...] Snowden once rightly called the UK media’s coverage of the GCHQ story “a disservice to the public.”

Today's Uncertain Future Calls For Observation and Patience, Not Boldness and Strategy | BillMoyers.com
Not one of the signature foreign policy initiatives conceived in Obama’s first term has borne fruit. When it came to making a fresh start with the Islamic world, responsibly ending the “dumb” war in Iraq (while winning the “necessary” one in Afghanistan), “resetting” US-Russian relations, and “pivoting” toward Asia, mark your scorecard zero for four. There’s no doubt that when Kerry arrived at the State Department he brought with him some much-needed energy. That he is giving it his all — the department’s website reports that the secretary has already clocked over 682,000 miles of travel — is doubtless true as well. The problem is the absence of results. Remember when his signature initiative was going to be an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal? Sadly, that quixotic plan, too, has come to naught.

Canadian intel program monitored global file transfers to find potential extremists | PandoDaily
LEVITATION is said to work by collecting information from Internet cables to which the Canadian equivalent to the National Security Agency has access. It then looks at the affected IP addresses and uses them to cross-reference its findings with other databases. It is said to monitor between 10 million and 15 million uploads and downloads within certain countries inside North Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and North America. Most of those transfers are monitored in vain: the program is said to reveal just 350 “interesting” downloads each month — less than 0.0001 of the digital traffic it surveils. Indeed, a member of the Canadian intelligence agency is said to have joked about the number of “Glee” downloads it has to sift through to find anything remotely relevant.

NSA: Snowden-Dokumente bei The Intercept, TAREX-Basis in Deutschland - SPIEGEL ONLINE

Dropbox was asked not to inform users of 80% of its government data requests | PandoDaily
Many of the leaks published by the Guardian, the New York Times, the Washington Post, and ProPublica over the last few months show that companies might not even be aware of everything the government is doing to access their data. The US National Security Agency can reportedly infiltrate Google’s data through a program called MUSCULAR. Upon hearing of this program, Google engineers “exploded in profanity” and others issued a “giant Fuck You” to the NSA on their Google+ profiles. How could these companies disclose such programs in their transparency reports — even if the current restrictions are lifted — if they are unaware of them in the first place? [...] Dropbox’s transparency report is a stark reminder of just how little we still know about what information law enforcement seeks from tech companies more than a year after many of the government’s surveillance programs were first revealed.
