Archaeologists find earliest evidence of bread | Science | The Guardian
Using radiocarbon-dating of charred plant materials found within the hearths, the team found the fireplaces were used just over 14,000 years ago.

“Bread has been seen as a product of agriculturist, settled societies, but our evidence from Jordan now basically predates the onset of plant cultivation … by at least 3,000 years,” said Dr Tobias Richter, co-author of the study from the University of Copenhagen, noting that fully-fledged agriculture in the Levant is believed to have emerged around 8,000 BC.

“So bread was being made by hunter-gatherers before they started to cultivate any plants,” he said.

Amazon fish challenges mutation idea - BBC News
Evolutionary theory suggests that species favouring asexual reproduction will rapidly become extinct, as their genomes accumulate deadly mutations over time.

But a study on an Amazon fish has cast doubt on the rapidity of this decline.

Despite thousands of years of asexual reproduction, the genomes of the Amazon molly fish are remarkably stable and the species has survived.

Details of the work have been published in Nature Ecology and Evolution.

Internal 'clock' makes some people age faster and die younger – regardless of lifestyle | Science | The Guardian
Scientists have found the most definitive evidence yet that some people are destined to age quicker and die younger than others - regardless of their lifestyle.

The findings could explain the seemingly random and unfair way that death is sometimes dealt out, and raise the intriguing future possibility of being able to extend the natural human lifespan.

“You get people who are vegan, sleep 10 hours a day, have a low-stress job, and still end up dying young,” said Steve Horvath, a biostatistician who led the research at the University of California, Los Angeles. “We’ve shown some people have a faster innate ageing rate.”

It's a fact: climate change made Hurricane Harvey more deadly | Michael E Mann | Opinion | The Guardian - There is a simple thermodynamic relationship known as the Clausius-Clapeyron equation that tells us there is a roughly 3% increase in average atmospheric moisture content for each 0.5C of warming. Sea surface temperatures in the area where Harvey intensified were 0.5-1C warmer than current-day average temperatures, which translates to 1-1.5C warmer than “average” temperatures a few decades ago. That means 3-5% more moisture in the atmosphere. &!

Climate stirring change beneath the waves - BBC News
Human-induced climate change is triggering changes beneath the waves that could have a long-term effect on marine food webs, a study suggests. An assessment of phytoplankton in the North Atlantic found the microscopic organisms' pole-ward shift was faster than previously reported. It observed that the ocean's tiny plant community was "poised for marked shift and shuffle". [...] "The main results of the study were that we found that when the climate changes it was not just the temperature that was changing and impacting phytoplankton but it was also all the ocean circulation and the conditions in the ocean surface, such as nutrients and light, that have an ecological impact," Dr Barton observed. "Generally, the whole physical environment is altered; in some cases, quite substantially."

Meeresspiegel-Prognose: Nordsee flutet Norddeutschland - SPIEGEL ONLINE

Climate change 'to make transatlantic flights longer' - BBC News
Previous studies have shown that climate change is likely to increase turbulence on these transatlantic flights. In this new study researchers modelled how atmospheric winds would change given a doubling of atmospheric CO2. They fed the results into the same route algorithms that airlines routinely use to plan their transatlantic journeys. They found that the winds on the New York to London route will become 15% faster on average. Flights from London will become twice as likely to take over seven hours while flights from New York will speed up and will become twice as likely to take under five hours and 20 minutes. While on average, flights will only gain and lose a few minutes each way, the cumulative impact is "significant" says the study.

Evidence suggests huge ninth planet exists past Pluto at solar system's edge | Science | The Guardian
If the researchers have their sums right, the mysterious new world is 10 times more massive than Earth and up to four times the size. Nicknamed Planet Nine, it moves on an extremely elongated orbit, and takes a staggering 10,000 to 20,000 years to swing once around the sun. The icy world, if it exists, has evaded detection because it is so far away. Scientists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) calculate that the closest it comes to the sun is 15 times the distance to Pluto. It then heads into uncharted territory, 75 times further out than Pluto, or about 93 billion miles from the sun. A ray of light would take a week to get there.

Hawking: Humans at risk of lethal 'own goal' - BBC News
Humanity is at risk from a series of dangers of our own making, according to Prof Stephen Hawking. Nuclear war, global warming and genetically-engineered viruses are among the scenarios which he singles out. And he says that further progress in science and technology will create "new ways things can go wrong". Prof Hawking is giving this year's BBC Reith Lectures, which explore research into black holes, and his warning came in answer to audience questions. He says that assuming humanity eventually establishes colonies on other worlds, it will be able to survive. "Although the chance of a disaster to planet Earth in a given year may be quite low, it adds up over time, and becomes a near certainty in the next thousand or ten thousand years. [...] But he also said that future generations of researchers should be aware of how scientific and technological progress is changing the world, and to help the wider public understand it. //&!

'Almost too late': fears of global superbug crisis in wake of antibiotic misuse | Society | The Guardian
Despite European Union regulations aiming to cut back on the unnecessary use of antibiotics, Dr Brown believes it will take more than just legislation to tackle the superbug crisis. Market forces will need to be compelled to cut usage, perhaps when prompted by a shift in public opinion, he said. “Those with a vested interest find ways around legislation. So, in addition to public policy we will need also the power of market forces,” he added. “When the public start demanding meat that has not seen antibiotics - because they understand that the meat may contain antibiotic resistant bacteria - only then will real progress be made. We need education about the threat.”

Paris climate deal: reaction from the experts | Environment | The Guardian
While the summit delegates herald their ambitious targets, scientists and campaigners have mixed views of the agreement [...] :: However, we should also be cautious. It is clear that the 1C temperature rise over pre-industrial levels that we have seen so far has triggered a whole range of effects including melting of mountain glaciers, significant sea-level rise, devastating droughts, and flooding. These effects are likely to get much worse with even modest future increases. Keeping temperatures to manageable levels also assumes that we know what the precise link is between atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations and the global temperature response. We don’t know this, nor the nature and strength of natural feedbacks in the climate system that might drive future warming. [...] When we speak about targets of two degrees, or even 1.5, we should remember that science has yet to uncover a simple relationship between carbon emissions and the level of future global warming. ...

German plasma success raises nuclear fusion hopes - BBC News
A German nuclear fusion experiment has produced a special super-hot gas which scientists hope will eventually lead to clean, cheap energy. [...] Physicists are in a worldwide race to create stable fusion devices that could not only mimic the Sun but release abundant energy, without the volumes of toxic waste generated by nuclear fission - the splitting of the atom. [...] The project began nine years ago and has cost 1bn euros (£720m; $1.1bn) so far. The EU's main nuclear fusion project is called Iter, at Cadarache, in the south of France. But it will not be fired up until the 2020s. It is controversial, having already cost more than €10bn. [...] Scientists have been working on nuclear fusion for more than 50 years but the extreme temperatures involved and the difficulty of controlling plasmas mean progress is slow.

Two, if they can’t find something like that, they’ll probably just lie about it. Britain set for white Christmas? 36 days of snow forecast after 'coldest Atlantic for 80 years' - Mirror Online

Why Cancer Research Has Stalled - T. Colin Campbell
But such conclusions fail to explain changes in the rates of cancer over time, or the wide variation in cancer prevalence between different human populations. They are flawed for a very fundamental reason: they assume that most types of cancer are caused by DNA mutations. This is the mutation theory of cancer. It serves as a fundamental explanation of cancer development and thus is a central focus of cancer research and clinical practice. [...] I disagree with this theory. I suggest that failing to question the mutation theory of cancer is the underlying scientific reason the War on Cancer is not being won. A nutritional theory of cancer .... [ who makes money on cancer treatment if there is rarely cancer amongst the population vs major cause of death in western society? ]

Forget El Niño, start worrying about the North Atlantic blob | News | The Guardian
This question is what climate scientists across the northern hemisphere are trying to answer, especially since it coincides with an exceptionally cold North Atlantic, which might be even more important because it affects the position of the jet stream. The easterly winds of last week, bringing unseasonably cold weather, are believed to be as a direct result of this North Atlantic cold diverting the jet stream and allowing cold easterly air from Siberia to reach our shores. There has already been snow in Germany.

Tobacco tax increase urged by parliamentary group - BBC News
The tax rate currently goes up by 2% above inflation each year, but the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Smoking and Health wants that increased to 5%. Five research papers that revolutionised health - BBC News
Richard Doll was the British statistician working for the Medical Research Council who published a ground-breaking paper in the British Medical Journal in 1950 that concluded there was "a real association between carcinoma of the lung and smoking". He looked at the incidence of smoking and lung cancer in a large number of patients and compared their experience with people who had different cancers - what scientists call a control group. His findings led him to give up smoking. But despite many subsequent studies that have supported the connection, the tobacco industry has not accepted the research.

Cholesterol and Alzheimer’s disease - YouTube
>> medical profession may come around: what is bad for your arteries and heart is bad for your brain as new research shows. cholesterol levels do play role/correlate with "Cerebral amyloid angiopathy"/beta-amyloid formation in the brain aka brain plaques. After all, its a build up of the arteries in our brain (brain consists mostly of fat) "Cerebral amyloid angiopathy is a neurological condition in which proteins called amyloid build up on the walls of the arteries in the brain. The condition increases the risk of hemorrhagic stroke and dementia." - // And prevention is better than cure because cognitive function starts to be lost early on before medical/personal detection of the condition. // LDL cholestero may be able to cross blood brain barrier. WHO | A call for higher taxes on tobacco
Dr Margaret Chan and Mike Bloomberg call for higher taxes on tobacco. The evidence is clear: raising tobacco taxes cuts usage, encourages smokers to quit and discourages young people from picking up the habit in the first place. The United Nations ought to encourage countries to raise tobacco taxes to support the world’s Sustainable Development Goals and reduce tobacco use.

Study supports cancer link with height - BBC News //Its results found that for every extra 10cm (4in) of height, when fully grown, the risk of developing cancer increased by 18% in women and 11% in men. But experts said the study did not take into account many risk factors and that tall people should not be worried. To reduce risk of cancer, the most important things to do are: give up smoking, cut down on alcohol, adopt a healthy diet and lifestyle. [ and its not about more cells as noted by one doc, its about the bigger need of caloric intake, and thus bigger intake of sick food, cancer food, processed food, ... thus bigger load on the system: insulin response, IGF-1 load bigger, long-term = higher risk. its comparable with obese people are at higher risk because they eat more sick food, even if you take into account the sick status they are in vs tall person with normal weight. Concern over hidden diesel pollutant - BBC News
Atmospheric levels of a little known by-product from diesel engines are up 70 times higher than expected according to a study. Researchers found that long-chain hydrocarbons are significantly under-reported in car manufacturers' data. These hydrocarbons are a key component of two of the worst air pollutants, ozone and particulate matter. The authors believe these "hidden" emissions are having a large impact on air quality in cities like London. The exhaust pipes of diesel-fuelled trucks and cars produce an array of emissions that have different impacts on the air that people breathe. Complicated mixture The nitrogen dioxide and particles that are emitted from burning diesel have a direct impact on human health in cities. But diesel also contains more complex, long-chain hydrocarbons, whose role in air pollution has been little understood until now. [ science ] There have been several air pollution alerts in London over the past two years
