UK towns ‘polarised’ by rise of far right | UK news | The Guardian
But Khan said her investigations had detected a sense Britain was on the cusp of a fresh wave of rightwing extremism: “This backs up what experts have been telling me – that we are seeing a new wave of the far right: modernised, professionalised and growing; supported by a frightening amount of legal online extremist material.” [...] Metropolitan police’s Neil Basu, told the home affairs select committee that far-right extremists and Islamists were “feeding each other” and that police were currently presiding over 700 live terrorism investigations. [...] Home Office data shows that white people now constitute the largest proportion of arrested terrorism suspects for the first time in 13 years. Meanwhile, the number of people referred to the government’s counter-extremism programme, Prevent, because of concerns over rightwing extremism has grown by more than a quarter.

Fall in planned operations in Scottish hospitals - BBC News
7% drop in planned ops (non-urgent). The health board has blamed problems recruiting staff. [...] Fewer beds being available in hospitals for patients having scheduled operations has been cited as one of the reasons why the number of procedures was down. Official figures show the total number of hospital beds available in Scotland in March dropped by 382 from 22,240 to 21,858. [...] A spokeswoman for NHS Grampian said: "The reduction in the number of procedures taking place is a direct result of the challenges we have faced in staffing.
"This does not just cover theatres themselves but also vital pre- and post-operative care.
"We continue to actively recruit to a range of posts but - in common with many Scottish boards - are facing a shortage of suitably qualified candidates in some areas."
She added that while they were unable to meet the Scottish government's legal waiting time guarantee they had created a new system for prioritising patients. [CANCER, A&E ops] &! &!

Doctors warn ‘struggling’ NHS could be forced to cut back treatment - The Scotsman
The situation has become so critical that in future hospitals may have to look at scaling back treatment for many patients, the British Medical Association Scotland has said.
Dr Peter Bennie, head of BMA Scotland depicts a service which is “overburdened and underfinanced” with doctors and nurses “burnt out” and argues that Scottish Government claims of record funding “completely miss the point”. “If the gap between demand and resources is going to continue, then there is no choice but to ask what the NHS in Scotland can and can’t deliver in the future.”
[...] Funding for the health service has been “virtually stagnant” UK-wide since the onset of austerity and is not keeping pace with growing demands, Dr Bennie added.

NHS £8bn budget plan 'not enough', say hospital bosses - BBC News
Patients in England will see rising waiting times, rationing and cuts in the number of staff unless the NHS gets more money, health bosses say.
A five-year plan to increase the budget by £8bn a year by 2020 was only set out last year, but now hospital bosses have warned that is not enough.
Chris Hopson, of NHS Providers, said the settlement needed to be redrawn.
It comes as the half-year accounts for 2016-17 showed hospitals and other NHS trusts were failing to keep in budget.

The party argued that the proposals "constitute major changes in service provision" and therefore should be decided on by ministers rather than local health boards. &!

The target of 85% of cancer patients to be seen within two months of urgent referral has been missed for almost two years [...] “These targets exist to ensure swift diagnosis and access to cancer treatment, which is vital if we’re to give patients the best chance of a cure and are serious about having survival rates as good as anywhere in the world. [...] Nigel Edwards, chief executive of the Nuffield Trust, said: “Today’s drop in performance is yet another example of the great pressure the entire health service is facing.”

NHS boards face cuts totalling £407m (From Herald Scotland)
Scottish health boards are facing up to budget cuts on a scale never achieved before, and some are proposing savings deemed "high risk".
Figures on cuts planned by Scotland's 14 regional health boards and seven specialist boards showed total savin of £407m to be achieved this year. Critics said this would wipe out in a single year the bulk of the SNP's manifesto pledge to invest an extra £500 million in the NHS over the course of the next parliament. //^&!
