Recycled packaging 'may end up in landfill', warns watchdog - BBC News
The National Audit Office (NAO) says over half of the packaging reported as recycled is actually being sent abroad to be processed.

As a result, it says, the government has little idea of whether the recyclables are getting turned into new products, buried in landfill or burned.

While an illusion of success has been created by the UK’s system for recycling packaging, the NAO says, the reality may be quite different.

'Toxic garbage will be sold here': Outcry as Brazil moves to loosen pesticide laws | World news | The Guardian
“The economic interest will prevail over human and environmental health.”

Of 121 pesticides permitted in Brazil for coffee production, 30 are already banned in the European Union, including the toxic herbicide paraquat, Bombardi reported in an extensive 2017 study. [...] The country already lets foreign companies exploit its lower standards of protection, they said, “exporting hazardous pesticides prohibited from use in their domestic markets to be used in Brazil.”

Under Brazil’s current legislation, pesticides with elements considered teratogenic, carcinogenic, mutagenic, endocrine disruptive, or posing risks to the reproductive system can’t be registered, they said. But under the bill, hazardous pesticides will only be prohibited when there is a “scientifically established unacceptable risk” – a definition too vague to be effective.

Assumed safety of widespread pesticide use is false, says top government scientist | Environment | The Guardian
“The effects of dosing whole landscapes with chemicals have been largely ignored by regulatory systems,” the scientists said. “This can and should be changed.” They contrast this situation with pharmaceuticals, for which there is a system of rigorous global monitoring after a drug is approved in case adverse effects emerge.

“Vigilance on the scale that is required for medicines does not exist to assess the effects of pesticides in the environment,” they said. They cite the UK as an example of one of the most developed regulatory systems: “Yet it has no systematic monitoring of pesticide residues in the environment. There is no consideration of safe pesticide limits at landscape scales.”

Is Britain's housing bubble turning Japanese? - Renegade Inc
Britain is in the grip of a housing crisis. But contrary to some Daily Mail speculators, the bricks and mortar economy is not going the way of Japan, circa 1990. Economist Neil Wilson explains why the same economic and political forces suppressing Japanese property prices will keep British prices artificially inflated for the foreseeable future. [...] The British building industry has heavily consolidated over the past twenty years, creating an Oligopoly [...] Britain is in the grip of a housing crisis. Yet successive governments have allowed this land speculation to flourish. Industry press releases deflect the blame to local council “red tape”, while sitting on thousands of hectares lying undeveloped “until market conditions improve”.

Employment tribunal fees unlawful, Supreme Court rules - BBC News
Fees for those bringing employment tribunal claims have been ruled unlawful, and the government will now have to repay up to £32m to claimants.
The government introduced fees of up to £1,200 in 2013 to reduce the number of malicious and weak cases, but that led to a 79% reduction over three years.
Trade union Unison argued the fees prevented workers accessing justice.
The Ministry of Justice said the government would take immediate steps to stop charging and refund payments.
The Supreme Court ruled the government was acting unlawfully and unconstitutionally when it introduced the fees.

Jeremy Hunt to consider merging health regulation bodies | Politics | The Guardian
Jeremy Hunt, the health secretary, is preparing to publish a consultation paper that could lead to the medical and nursing professions no longer having their own dedicated disciplinary bodies. [...] [ LIMITING LIABILITIES from suits/claims neglect malpractice discrimination ! instead claim of inefficiencies and less money. ] Department of Health sources say Hunt wants to improve public protection against the possibility of being harmed by poor professional practice and ensure that concerns about the poor performance of health professionals is dealt with quickly and proportionately. Ministers are determined to reform what they see as the unwieldy and confusing set-up under which different types of health staff each have their own regulator. For example, the General Medical Council regulates Britain’s 281,000 doctors and the Nursing and Midwifery Council performs the same role for about 600,000 nurses and midwives.

Brexit has allowed the banks to get off Britain's naughty step | Business | The Guardian
The even better news for the banks is that they are no longer hated. Far from it. Much of the concern about how the UK will survive outside the EU has centred on the future of the City. For years, the banks have been trying to find a way of getting themselves off the public’s naughty step. Brexit has provided them with an opportunity that has been seized with relish. The City has played the post-referendum game masterfully. Inquiry launched into UK gender laws amid fears over Brexit effect | World news | The Guardian
[ one particular NHS already breaking EU overtime work directive ] Areas of equality law to be examined include measures to guarantee equal pay, protection for part-time workers and during pregnancy, and combating so-called intersectional discrimination, where someone faces potential disadvantage for not just their gender but another area, for example race or religion. [...] While the government had promised to protect equality and the rights of workers following departure from the EU, Smethers said, the concern was that some protections could be lost almost inadvertently amid wider changes. [...] “The real worry we’ve got is that those kind of assurances are actually quite superficial, and they are probably a second order commitment compared to the need to secure a competitive economy, and how we compete if we’re outside the trading bloc,” Smethers said. &! Get Ready for the First Shocks of Trump’s Disaster Capitalism
bush on steroids // Shock Doctrine // [taking advantage/exploit self-created crisis and shocks] To get a sense of how the Trump administration will respond to their first crises, it’s worth reading the list in full (and noting Pence’s name right at the bottom).

What stands out in the package of pseudo “relief” policies is the commitment to wage all-out war on labor standards and on the public sphere — which is ironic because the failure of public infrastructure is what turned Katrina into a human catastrophe. Also notable is the determination to use any opportunity to strengthen the hand of the oil and gas industry.

The first three items on the RSC list are “automatically suspend Davis-Bacon prevailing wage laws in disaster areas,” a reference to the law that required federal contractors to pay a living wage; “make the entire affected area a flat-tax free-enterprise zone”; and “make the entire region an economic competitiveness zone (comprehensive tax incentives and waiving of regulations).”

Brexit: Boris Johnson warns against 'punishment beatings' - BBC News
And HSBC announced it was preparing to move 1,000 staff from London to Paris when the UK leaves the EU. [...] Guy Verhofstadt said there was 'no way' the UK could pick and choose aspects of the EU [...] German Chancellor Angela Merkel said: "The be-all and end-all is that Europe does not let itself be divided, and we will ensure that with very intensive contacts.'' EU governments would consult their business sectors, she added, and she was "not worried that we will not stick together". [...] The Financial Times praises the prime minister's "bold vision" but warns that the road ahead will be perilous. [...] At Prime Minister's Questions, Mr Corbyn urged Mrs May to "stop her threat of a bargain basement Brexit, a low-paid tax haven on the shores of Europe".
He added: "It won't necessarily damage the EU but it would certainly damage this country." [...] Mrs May told MPs: "What I set out yesterday was a plan for a global Britain, bringing prosperity to this country and jobs to people and spreading economic growth across this country." [...] "not just nasty but also blind to reality".

A UK trade deal with Trump? Be careful what you wish for | Politics | The Guardian
Health
A big fear during the TTIP negotiations was that US insurers and health providers would undermine the NHS by pressing for open access to the UK “market” in medical care. “A rushed trade deal with Trump may give ministers cover for their dangerous Brexit strategy but it will not hide the risk that this could be a Trojan horse for NHS privatisation,” warned the shadow health secretary, Jonathan Ashworth on Monday.

That’s not necessarily what Schneier wants, but he recognizes its necessity.

“I don’t like this,” he concluded. “I like the world where the internet can do whatever it wants, whenever it wants, at all times. It’s fun. This is a fun device. But I’m not sure we can do that anymore.”

A giant problem | The Economist
As our special report this week makes clear, the superstars are admirable in many ways. They churn out products that improve consumers’ lives, from smarter smartphones to sharper televisions. They provide Americans and Europeans with an estimated $280 billion-worth of “free” services—such as search or directions—a year. But they have two big faults. They are squashing competition, and they are using the darker arts of management to stay ahead. Neither is easy to solve. But failing to do so risks a backlash which will be bad for everyone. [...] The world needs a healthy dose of competition to keep today’s giants on their toes and to give those in their shadow a chance to grow.

The Growth Trap
[ growing for growth sake! vs growing in a world/area that is not conducive to grow ] When Twitter went public in 2013, its stock soared and its value jumped to $25 billion. Its founders and early investors got rich. But since then, the company has been considered a failure, despite the fact that it boasts 320 million active users, because it's not growing fast enough. Douglas Rushkoff, author of "Throwing Rocks at the Google Bus: How Growth Became the Enemy of Prosperity," talks to Steve Paikin about why he sees the push for more growth as dangerous. // true capitalists (shareholder, crony, greedy) w/o self-regulation or governance extract all the value there is to extract and then leave, dispersing it to the few who already have [...] WE MUST REWRITE THE RULES OF THE GROWTH GAME ITSELF! [...] you want to optimise the economy based on velocity of money (circulation of money), not share price and value extraction [...]

Barack Obama says Brexit would leave UK 'back of the queue' on trade
US President Barack Obama has said Britain would go to the "back of the queue" for trade deals with the US if it votes to leave the European Union. He said Britain was at its best when "helping to lead" a strong EU and membership made it a "bigger player" on the world stage. He was speaking at the start of a three day visit to the UK. EU exit campaigners reacted angrily to his words, with Tory MP Dominic Raab dubbing him a "lame duck" president. //&! The economics of Brexit – Politics Weekly podcast
Leave Campaign, so far, has failed to assure voters that we get through the quiet possible tubulences and uncertainty unharmed severely after 1-2 years. [ economic forecasts/predictions are Wall Streets cottage industry ] Brexit for sure would throw Osbornes plan for a surplus in 2020. ... brexit is about less regulation free trade low tariffs, 'get off the back of our City [London bank regulation]' [low tax, higher pay] George Osborne ... // banks have not voiced their voice loudly because that would be seen by people who bailed them out to tune of doubling the deficit, and still own bank shares ie loyds. it could be seen disingenuous, outrageous, as we are still in doldrums, paying off their debt, and suffering through austerity where the most vulnerable are cut away from society.
