Pando: Hot or Not founder responds to Nancy Jo Sales' new book: "I don’t think we invented human nature"
Nearly every tweet I’ve read about Nancy Jo Sales’ new book “American Girls: Social Media and the Secret Lives of Teenagers” has been some variation of “I’m scared to read this.” Indeed by page 20, I started making plans to move to an Amish village by the time my daughter turns 12. The deeper I read, the more I was impressed by many of the young women Sales interviewed, and the more sorry I felt that we've given them this world.  [...] Sales also describes how young girls worship Kim Kardashian and derive their self worth from how many likes they get on Instagram.

Ellen Pao: ‘I Have Decided to End My Lawsuit Against Kleiner Perkins’ | Re/code
Still, Pao underscored that the deck was stacked against her in terms of resources. “I think it is wrong that employees have to pay in this situation, but I simply cannot afford the risks of more costs to fight a firm with massive PR and legal resources,” she said. “The court system is not set up to create an even playing field.” [...] To be clear, Kleiner and I have not reached any agreement to settle this matter. The Trouble With Reddit’s Content Policy Update | Re/code
It makes sense that hosting what the Southern Poverty Law Center described as the nexus of white supremacism on the Internet makes it difficult to “maintain a healthy and successful platform.” It’s obvious that Reddit doesn’t want to play host to racism and harassment. But the company doesn’t want to compromise too much on the “free speech” principles that hardcore Redditors, who are integral to the day-to-day functions of the site, obsess over. And Reddit also wants to cut ties with well-known hate centers like r/coontown that offend both advertisers and common decency. Reddit’s problem is that it wants to have it both ways. [ tl;dr Reddit wants to be more family friendly to be more attractive to advertisers, after all it has the pageviews to have advertising, what ever form, make it a sizeable revenue pillar. That should have long ago been communicated, still hasn't. ]

Former Reddit CEO alleges co-founder Alexis Ohanian fired Victoria Taylor, not Pao
via redd.it/3d6asv // nyti.ms/1gz0Iks // yishan - former CEO :: Alexis wasn’t some employee reporting to Pao, he was the Executive Chairman of the Board, i.e. Pao’s boss. He had different ideas for AMAs, he didn’t like Victoria’s role, and decided to fire her. Pao wasn’t able to do anything about it. In this case it shouldn’t have traveled upstream to her, it came from above her. Then when the hate-train started up against Pao, Alexis should have been out front and center saying very clearly “Ellen Pao did not make this decision, I did.” Instead, he just sat back and let her take the heat. That’s a stunning lack of leadership and an incredibly shitty thing to do. I actually asked that he be on the board when I joined; I used to respect Alexis Ohanian. As much as Victoria is loved, this reaction is not all a result of her departure: there is a feeling among many of the moderators of reddit that the admins do not respect the work that is put in by the thousands of unpaid volunteers who maintain the communities of the 9,656 active subreddits, which they feel is expressed by, among other things, the lack of communication between them and the admins, and their disregard of the thousands of mods who keep reddit's communities going. // http://redd.it/3bw39q bit.ly/1LMuYFb "We're constantly ignored by the community team even when discussing serious issues that need some admin resolution. "The social aggregator is a terrible business model." : TheoryOfReddit
If you charge users up front to use your service, all things being equal, they are more likely to use one that is free, especially if an up-and-coming one offers something new and compelling. If you charge your users by selling their information and views to advertisers, then your service is beholden to those parties that buy the information and views, and this results in motivations that take priority to the user experience. For these reasons, starting with VC funding is a poison pill for social aggregators, as the profit pressure runs contrary to the conditions and patience necessary for community building and early growth. // https://hubski.com/pub?id=219234

What Reddit's 'ridiculous' button tells us about mortality - BBC News
The game shows us that people are willing to participate in seemingly mundane activities if they're designed in a particular way, he tells BBC Trending. "What governments should do is leverage those forces to benefit everyone." He cites keeping track of endangered species online as one potential application, and is also encouraged by the array of tools that the community has built to support the phenomenon. "When you make data free, when you make it open, amazing things happen, but not always in the way you'd expect." Its lessons aren't just practical, but philosophical too, he says. "It dials into people's own views about their mortality. It points out something pretty base to human psychology about how we perceive the frailty of human nature. We need to keep this thing alive and to protect it - not let it approach this finite limit."

Why Reddit's new 'no remote worker' policy is upsetting | VentureBeat | Business | by Tom Cheredar
See the thing is, people are likely upset because they look at Reddit as the anti-establishment — that if these guys (aka Reddit) can rise to the top without becoming a Yahoo or Facebook, then there’s hope for all the people in Salt Lake City, Nashville, Atlanta, and every other middle-of-nowhere city in the country with a decent Internet connection. People who live outside of Silicon Valley can still be all-stars in the technology world — and Reddit is a big part of that. So people were understandably rattled, and probably feeling more than a little defensive about this issue. (That’s not to say there wasn’t also plenty of healthy discussion about business philosophies of remote workers, too.)

Reddit Raising Big Funding Round With Help From Y Combinator Contacts | Re/code
Sources said the almost-anything-goes site has reached a preliminary agreement to sell less than 10 percent of the company for more than $50 million. That could give the company a valuation of upward of $500 million. Given investors’ new-found appetite for content companies — see: BuzzFeed, Twitch — Reddit’s valuation may swell significantly by the time the deal is done, well above the $400 million it was looking for in 2013. After celebrity nude leaks, Apple is finally taking security a little more seriously | PandoDaily
Now it seems that Apple is at least attempting to make its efforts to fix obvious security problems with its service a little easier to understand. I’m sure that has more to do with the allegations that it was responsible for the reprehensible leak of stolen nude photographs than with a new sense of responsibility to consumers, but we’ll have to take what we can get. Maybe the lesson will stick and the company will decide to be a little more forthcoming in the future. There is no reasonable expectation of perfect security in modern society, but we can at least strive for transparency from companies like Apple when our privacy is threatened. Better to know that something can’t be kept secure than to think it’s safe and remain ignorant of any threats.

A Letter To Jennifer Lawrence | TechCrunch
If I and other industry reporters like Mat Honan don’t know how exactly to absolutely protect ourselves, because the targets and tools are always changing, how will people who don’t have our exposure to tech? The onus is on Apple and other tech platforms like Google, Facebook, Amazon and Microsoft to keep their customers — us — safe. Though stolen photos are being shared that have been extracted from Android and Windows Phone backups, too, I’m singling out Apple here because Apple, beyond any other tech company, prides itself on a seamless consumer experience. It’s done a very good job of hiding the technical aspects of its products for the sake of user friendliness: “It just works.” Well, not in this case. +++ !!! http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/09/03/seth-green-huff-post_n_5761508.html + huff.to/WbN24c

In The Fappening's Wake, 4chan Intros DMCA Policy | TorrentFreak
+++ http://gigaom.com/2014/09/03/why-4chan-created-a-copyright-shield-in-the-wake-of-the-apple-leak/ "The real reason that 4Chan changed its policy, though, likely has little to do with a shift in Poole’s personal views. Instead, it looks more like a frantic legal tactic to protect Poole from copyright lawsuits from Lawrence and others. By now, Poole’s lawyers have probably advised him that copyright owners must register their photographs with the Copyright Office in order to collect what is known as “statutory damages” — which allow owners to collect up to $150,000 for every infringing photograph. 4Chan, in other words, has likely raced to erect the DMCA shield before the celebrities register their photos." +++ https://www.plagiarismtoday.com/2014/09/03/3-count-4chan-4-takedown/ "4chan Will Now Remove Awful Images—If They’re Copyrighted"

The End of Big Twitter | Hacker News
Twitter is an optimal conduit for narcissism, trolling, harassment, mobbing, astroturfing, demagoguery, and manufacturing consent. The medium shapes the discourse, and Twitter encourages and amplifies bad behavior while inhibiting intelligent and thoughtful conversation. Even if it didn't architecturally push you toward this behavior the scale alone enables every bad behavior you would expect if you scaled a single IRC channel up to a billion people. There is no way to "fix" this. It is its nature. It is a technology that exists because it makes a few people a ton of money and gives regular people a dopamine tweak along with heaps of suffering. It is the online equivalent of a crackhouse. [...] Platform starts, intelligent, well-spoken early adopters sign on. Fast forward 7-8 years. Platform is overrun by normal people. Early adopters leave and move on to the next platform. The cycle continues.

Notes on the Celebrity Data Theft | Hacker News
!!! - https://www.nikcub.com/posts/notes-on-the-celebrity-data-theft/ "In reviewing months worth of forum posts, image board posts, private emails, replies for requests for services, etc. nowhere was the FindMyPhone API brute force technique (revealed publicly and exploited in iBrute) mentioned. This doesn’t mean that it wasn’t used privately by the hackers – but judging by the skill levels involved, the mentions and tutorials around other techniques and some of the bragged about success rates with social engineering, recovery, resets, rats and phishing – it appears that such techniques were not necessary or never discovered. [...] Timestamps, forum posts and other data suggests that the collection was built up over a long period of time. [...] In terms of staying secure the most obvious solutions are to pick a better password, set your security answers to long random strings and enable two-factor authentication. Tone deaf Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpeles warns the world about the dangers of hackers | PandoDaily
"Recent events show that with appropriate motivation anything can be hacked.Maybe everyone should stop and think about what it means for them" - Karpeles tweet would appear to be a reference to the recent celebrity hacking scandal which has seen nude photos of several female stars published online, with extortion request sent to prevent the release of others. (Ironically, many of these demands were for payment in bitcoin.) Even if it weren’t for Karpeles’ track record with alleged hacking attacks, the tweet would nevertheless have been ill-advised. As many other public figures have learned, any hint at victim-blaming in this instance is sure to draw criticism. Combine this with the fact that Karpeles’ nearly bankrupted thousands of people, and this comment warrants a special kind of outrage.
