AOL Confirms It Is Buying Millennial Media In $238M Deal To Expand In Mobile Ads | TechCrunch
For Millennial’s part, while the company — one of the older mobile ad firms — had developed an extensive advertising network, some critics believed that the company had not really kept up with bigger innovations in ad tech. When it went public in 2012, the company popped with an eye-watering valuation of $2 billion, a far cry from its sub-$300 million valuation today. In that regard, coming together with a company like AOL to wrap more ad tech around its network also makes some sense. The mobile ad market is still a relatively small part of the wider digital ad industry, but with consumers’ big swing to using smartphones and tablets as their sole computing devices, this is rapidly changing, with a lot of that move being fuelled by innovations in ad tech.

Focus on Mobile, reorientate (right the ship in other direction, while still keeping tab on yahoo.com which is still sizeable business for yahoo) the company, management, team, employees. And acquisitions that help it make Yahoo! a mobile app company, relevant in the ecosystem (see Flurry acquisition, Brightroll, ... ad network/platform). Yahoos one disadvantage is that it doesn't have as much context to serve relevant - re-targeted ads to customers compared to FB, Twitter, Google. Same with Yahoo.com, its a bland/blunt page. FB accounts for >70% of all Social Media Ad spending! The rest is spend on Twitter and elsewhere. Programmatic Advertising is a crutch for native Web advertising to compete with FBs ability to slice and dice and analyse every nook and cranny. FB likes to be the web equivalent; Internet.org and asking/offering content creators/news papers to host content inside their Walls. And remember, Google missed this Social train badly, tried w Google+ after failing with Buzz. Was also late with (native) Mobile Search & just got going. And their last quarter(s) hinted at a stall of their advertising business and Wall Street doesn't like seeing this behemoth relying on just one business model while Nest Labs was a defensive acquisition (competing w Apple) and they lost out to FB to acquire WhatsApp. And if any Google X project will be able to live up to AdSense(Google Search) is questionable. Google might begin slowly dying soon in next 5 years by thousand cuts, like MSFT late 90's. Time is ripe.
