Investigatory Powers Bill: May defends surveillance powers - BBC News
Mrs May has said Britain's spies must continue to be allowed to hack into foreign computer networks, under so-called "bulk equipment interference warrants", as this was "a key operational requirement for GCHQ".
She told MPs that bulk powers had played a significant role in every major counter-terrorism investigation over the past decade, including seven terror plots foiled in the past 18 months, and in responding to the bulk of cyber attacks against UK interests.

Online abuse: 'existing laws too fragmented and don’t serve victims' | UK news | The Guardian
“There are crimes now taking place – the malicious use of intimate photographs for example – which we never would have imagined as an offence when I was a PC in the 80s. It’s not just the nature of it, it is the sheer volume. “The levels of abuse that now take place within the internet are on a level we never really expected. If we did try to deal with all of it we would clearly be swamped.” [...] Earlier in the week, it emerged that the Crown Prosecution Service in England and Wales has turned to Twitter for help as it faces a worrying increase in the use of social media by perpetrators to commit crimes against women and girls, including rape, domestic abuse and blackmail.

Charity warns 'named persons' law may breach children's rights to privacy (From Herald Scotland)
Clan Childlaw is to tell the UK Supreme Court next week that agencies such as health, education and social work will be justified in sharing information about a child merely on the basis of concerns about their wellbeing, rather than the previous much tougher test of being 'at risk of significant harm'. This means children can have virtually no expectation of privacy or confidentiality, the charity says, breaching article eight of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Why Was a Facebook Executive Arrested in Brazil? Encryption. | Re/code
Case in point: Facebook executive Diego Dzodan was arrested by Brazilian police Tuesday morning on his way to work for the same reason Brazilian authorities succeeded — albeit temporarily — in having WhatsApp banned from the country back in December: Encryption. Dzodan — who is still detained at the time of this writing — was arrested because of Facebook’s “repeated non-compliance with court orders,” according to a police press release. What does that mean? Brazilian authorities have requested that WhatsApp hand over user messages in multiple criminal investigations over the past few months, and WhatsApp repeatedly claims that it can’t hand over those messages because it doesn’t have them.

Pando: At what point is the convenience of technology outweighed by the constant stress?
Yesterday, I wrote about new proposals to allow the government to trawl the social media accounts of visa applicants before allowing or denying entry to the US.  Specifically, I wrote about my relief, as a visa-carrying foreign worker, at having deleted my social media accounts last year. For all the myriad reasons the government might declare me unworthy of living here -- particularly under President Trump -- at least an old dumb tweet won’t be one of them. [...] Connected technology was supposed to make our lives easier. And of course it has, in countless ways. But what it doesn’t seem to have done is made our lives less stressful...

Draft snooper's charter 'fails on spying powers and privacy protections' | World news | The Guardian
Theresa May’s draft “snooper’s charter” bill fails to cover all the intrusive spying powers of the security agencies and lacks clarity in its privacy protections, a parliamentary committee has said. The intelligence and security committee said the draft legislation published by the home secretary suffered from a lack of sufficient time and preparation. It was evident that even those working on the legislation had not always been clear about what it was intended to achieve, it said.

Apple raises concerns over UK's draft surveillance bill - BBC News
The US-based firm has passed on its thoughts to a parliamentary committee scrutinising the legislation. It focuses on three issues: encryption, the possibility of having to hack its own products, and the precedent it would set by agreeing to comply with UK-issued warrants. The Home Secretary Theresa May said last month that the proposed powers were needed to fight crime and terror. [...] But Apple appears to be concerned that the bill's language could still be interpreted more expansively and force the creation of a so-called "backdoor" to provide the authorities with access. Apple argues that the existence of such a backdoor would risk creating a weakness that others then might exploit, making users' data less secure. [...] Overseas warrants A second area of concern relates to the issue of "extra-territoriality". Existing British legislation - and the bill - maintain that companies need to comply with warrants for information wherever they are based and wherever the data resides.

Vorratsdatenspeicherung: Durch Vermessung die Welt retten? Kolumne - SPIEGEL ONLINE
Am Freitag wird die Vorratsdatenspeicherung beschlossen. Wieder einmal.

U.S. and China Seek Arms Deal for Cyberspace - The New York Times
In the last year there have been devastating Chinese hacks of American computer systems, and the U.S. government has floated the idea of sanctioning China in response. Here's the apparent response: A noticeable downtick in significant hacks of American networks, and news that the U.S. and China are working on a cybersecurity arms deal, ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping's Thursday arrival in America. The proposed agreement would supposedly prevent either nation from attacking the other's "critical infrastructure" during peacetime.

Jeremy Corbyn: Labour will campaign for UK to stay in the EU | Politics | The Guardian
McFadden stressed he did not believe Cameron was seeking to undermine those rights in his talks with his EU partners, but recognises that Corbyn is deeply concerned at what he regards is a shift from a social Europe to a free-market Europe. He said: “If the prime minister tries to water down hard won employment protections that would be wrong and foolhardy on his part and we would very strongly oppose it. But if he does try to water down these protections, the right response is not to leave the EU but to fight the 2020 election on a clear commitment to restore those employment rights – and we have to remain in the EU to do that.”

What I Learned This Week About Tim Cook’s Apple | Re/code
[ always along the motto: extension of you, part of you. The new Apple under Jobs was NOT an overnight success! It build on its differentiation, strong base, a cult, a Tribe, 1000 True Fans, and build on it stride by stride. Most capitalistic company out of SV, no counter-culture out of largest corp on world. & can pull of iAd coup because it has monopsony! & Duopoly w Android. ] Many people love Apple, others despise it. But, even without Jobs, it cannot be ignored. There simply is no other company that combines such a high-quality hardware line with such well-regarded software platforms. A faltering Samsung has the former, but not the latter. A strong and admirable Google has the latter, but not the former. If you didn’t believe that before, this week’s event made it crystal clear, with once-bitter rivals like Microsoft and Adobe showing up onstage to boast about how well their products worked with new Apple hardware and software. U.S. developing sanctions against China over cyberthefts - The Washington Post
[ double standard. probably know that they will be outed come time to have e-mailed trade secrets of other nations big companies to their own national companies, even if it is just for infrastructure or defense contract bids ] The White House is getting ready to issue "unprecedented economic sanctions" against Chinese companies and individuals "who have benefited from their government’s cybertheft of valuable U.S. trade secrets," says the Washington Post. But the Post doesn't explain what those sanctions would be, or why the U.S. is going after individual targets instead of the Chinese government itself. One thing that is clear: Chinese president Xi Jinping is scheduled to visit the U.S. next month.
